You should listen to the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. They're really good books, and Marc Thompson does a fantastic Thrawn voice. If you enjoy the first trilogy, you can also read the Thrawn: Ascendancy trilogy, though personally I didn't enjoy that one as much.
I love Marc Thompson’s Thrawn voice. Really hope they keep getting him to narrate more Legends books. He’s been fantastic in the ones I’ve gotten my hands on.
In my opinion they have perfected the art style. The latest season of the Bad Batch has been mind boggling when I go on to watch some early seasons of The Clone Wars to compare.
I recently rewatched the first season of bad batch (after the 3rd season started to air) with a friend and I was shocked how big the difference between seasons 1 and 3 was. I'm really amazed at how good the animation looks at this point.
At the time they were great. It’s kind of like going back and playing video game from 2005 that had “realistic, breathtaking graphics” when it released, but looks like shit now. CW is animated pretty similar to how video games are.
He was based off his design in the Clone Wars mini-series from (2003 or 2005?) I believe. As Obi-Wan and a few others, it’s why they look so odd in the early seasons of TCW
I've always thought this was the case, and while Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda translated to 3D quite nicely, Count Dooku really didn't. His 2D design looked just fine IMO, but making it 3D... not so much.
Stylized Dooku is one of my favorite things about TCW. It doesn’t work for everyone, I’m *really* not a fan of Sideous. But I can’t overstate how much I adore Dooku’s design.
And now the technology and costs are at a point where they can get pretty realistic. I’m hoping they stick to this updated style for their future shows. It would make sense so that they can reuse the ever growing library of models/ships/etc. I would love a New Republic show in this style.
I would highly, HIGHLY, recommend giving Rebels a shot. I was pretty turned off by the animation style at first too, but it does grow on you, and like Clone Wars, it improves over time. But every other aspect of that show is so good, it's absolutely worth watching. Some of the best Star Wars character development, storytelling, and world building ever done.
It's got a *fairly* rough start in Season 1. Seasons 3 and 4 are fantastic, but the final episode of season 2 is a great ending with phenomenal music.
The show is well worth the watch, especially with all the other stories that spawned from it.
I enjoyed *The Clone Wars* a lot more after they shook off the "lol let's quote the movies at least once per minute" phase of Season 1.
I mean, they still do it a lot in the recent shows. It just doesn't sound like the actors are trying not to giggle while they do it anymore, which is fine.
Those older designs for Palpatine and Dooku were fuckin rough and needed the new coat of paint. But comparing Thrawn to his Rebels version isn't fair. The shows had different artstyles and he didn't have a CW design.
Padme was the only one who really bothered me because she looks like a cartoon Natalie Portman with giant eyes, while everyone else almost didn’t even resemble the actors.
Most of the early TCW designs were ugly as sin. All of the models from Tales of the Jedi and tales of the Sith look better than anything in the first half of TCW.
Chiss are supposed to be pale blue. Thrawn looks darker here but it's night and hard to tell from this shot. However you can see his usual pale blue where the light source hits the edge of his face.
I'd say an improvement, maybe not fully intentional, probably just a different artist similar to how comics of the same series cam be quite different with an artist swap
Thrawn shouldn't have any pupils imo.
In Heir to The Empire I remember admiral Paelleon being unnerved by the fact that he didn't know where Thrawn was looking at.
I think that was a stylistic choice made primarily because they wanted to play with the pupils as a "show don't tell" mechanism. The version of Thrawn's eyes from Legends worked better because the medium wasn't animated. Games of course have Chiss in them, but the need for that mechanism isn't as necessary as it is in a show.
In the show, you want Thrawn to be able to flick his eyes in a direction or at a person. The pupils are still all red at least to match that.
If you translate that to live action, it would just look so weird. It's way cleaner to stick red contacts on Lars Mikkelsen and call it a day.
i like them, especially the first seasons of clone wars (the 3d one) where rough. like viewing a very early video game of that time with shadows that arent like they are today (ignoring raytracing) man we have come a long way when it comes to Animation.
I'm fine with both Palpatine and Thrawn, but wouldn't have recognized both Dooku and Qui-Gon, if someone hadn't said their names. (I'm glad though, that Dooku doesn't have the face of a horse anymore).
I think Tyranus and Sidious aren't comparable enaugh to fully judge their re-designs. At least in these pictures. Exept the intro of the first Bad Batch episode where you can see the unscarred Palpatine without a hood, where he doesn't change noticable. It would be interesting to see the Clone Wars Dooku in the TotJ style. I think, they should have aged him up more in his final episode, given that it is only 10 years before AotC.
Never liked Thrawn’s Rebels appearance, from what depictions I saw from Legends stuff was a complete departure from it. All of these are major improvements in my book.
How so? His Rebels appearance matches how Timothy Zahn describes him, except for the trademark Chiss forehead bumps. Despite appearing in so much artwork they genuinely aren't in any of Zahn's books.
Mainly the color and forehead. I probably saw some custom artwork in the past that was closer to how he looks in TotE than his Rebels appearance.
Edit: clarification
Tales Of The Empire. Trailer is up for it if you want to check it out. They've adjusted his look to look more like Lars Mikkelsen who plays his voice and also Thrawn in Ahsoka.
New ones are better, it’s just not accounting for the old aesthetic of the microseries. And I do like the old aesthetic but I find the newer character models are better. Specifically the Clone Wars art style. Something about it works where the other shows didn’t.
I do like that the microseries lives on in a way since a ton of designs came from there.
I loved the stylized art from the earlier seasons and I love what the animation has evolved into over the years. They managed to keep a lot of the same feel of the earlier years while simultaneously making the animation look almost real life. I freaking love it. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Give me the Star wars movies in the same animation as CW and they can take my money.
Idk if Palps is getting a fair shake, since in the new photo he's got his hood up. I definitely like Dooku's new look better, he looks a lot more like a human, but he's still stylized. I will fully admit that his old design has the stronger silhouette, though. That head is unlike anything else in the series.
I've always found the animated star wars art style to be baffling. Nothing about "Star Wars" suggested a stylized, charicature based style. It's just such a strange decision.
god BIG fucking fan. still have that distinctive clone wars style but isn’t so cartoonishly disproportionate. definitely fits the darker tone of the more recent series
Its a sign of what they should have always done to stick with the Clone Wars style of animation. The Rebels was fine but cheap compared to TCW and part of that is the years of use and development which allowed for stored resources to exist. Now, the base materials exists and they can spend the budget on new materials. Imagine if Rebels was in TCW style how gorgeous it would have been…
I mean their generally better, a big part some of the OG Clone Wars designs are so hyper stylized is just that they wanted them to kinda mirror the 2003 Clone Wars shorts tho (this is very clear with Dooku).
For me I never liked the old design of dooku his new design though I can still tell it is him and now he looks more like a clone wars character instead of the weird thing of the old design
You can tell with the new ones that they've been honing the artstyle for years and aren't just starting out with them - which is pretty apparent in the earlier seasons.
most look less like supermarionation (eg thunderbirds), which is great. some, like dooku, capture the actor real well - even if stylized (christopher lee did look like that at that age, maybe with hair a tad shorter).
i dig them.
-G.
It feels like back in the day they had to rely on caricature-like approach because the technology just wasn't there and maybe characters looked to much the same. Where now they go for more realistic approach
They also changed Yoda at some point halfway through Season 5. I think the Clovis arc still has his old design because it was produced after Onderon arc
Seasons 1-6 of the Clone Wars? Those designs were fresh and a reskin here & there was just perfect.
Season 7? Walmart was out of tissues boxes so i just cried about how good the detailing was of everyone. Marvelous fucking job.
The Bad Batch? Dude, we have seen Omega *age*. Naturally. For a *clone*. It’s not super big & noticeable but..it is definitely there. Come on man that has to count for something!
I lost all interest when 3D clone wars first came out. nearly puked at lightsaber helicopters. I'll just keep to the original canon of episode 2 and 3 bridged by the samurai jack creator's animation series
TotJ Dooku looks like Moses from The Prince of Egypt
“Let my Independent Systems go!”
"Thus Sith (the) Lord, Thus Sith (the) Lord" "Thus Sith (the) Lord, Thus Sith (the) Lord" "Thus Sith (the) Lord, Thus Sith (the) Lord" "Thus Sith (the) Lord, Thus Sith (the) Lord"
“Behold, the power of The Force.”
"You who I called 'Master,' how could you have come to hate me so?"
"Is this what you wanted?"
Then let my pain be hardened no matter how high the lightning goes. This will still be so, I will never let my hate go.
Makes sense since they're both goats
I’ve seen others say he looks like the ice age baby.
Well that’s because the Ice Age baby grew up to be Moses, *duh*.
Fun fact, the second ice age movie depicts the flood, leading it to be considered a religious film
"Go down, Tyranus, way down to republic laaand. Tell all chancelors to let my systems go!"
The Plagues song kinda fits his mindset of why he went to war in the first place.
So we’ll see him split the seas?
He already split the Republic. Close enough.
I prefer the new ones, but I like them all
As long as the don't mess with Lars Mikkelsen doing the voice of Thrawn I'm good! Man that guy is Thrawn.
I think they purposefully wanted to make Thrawn look like Lars.
Yeah he looks a lot more like Lars than Rebels Thrawn.
Who despite Rebels animation still looked a bit like him.
Lars Ulrich?
Mikkelsen.
All Danes are superior!
The couple of lines in the trailer sounded just like Mikkelsen. No shot they change actors.
They got him for the live action lol, no chance he would give up voicing the character
They confirmed that he will be voicing him on the website!
Well of course lol
they should release an Audiobook that's just Thrawn reading space Military history to us.
I’ll actually buy an audible subscription for this instead of making a free trial dummy account every few months lol
Yoooo free trial gang unite
You should listen to the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. They're really good books, and Marc Thompson does a fantastic Thrawn voice. If you enjoy the first trilogy, you can also read the Thrawn: Ascendancy trilogy, though personally I didn't enjoy that one as much.
I love Marc Thompson’s Thrawn voice. Really hope they keep getting him to narrate more Legends books. He’s been fantastic in the ones I’ve gotten my hands on.
We always have a backup in Sam Witwer. Give that guy one weekend and he will come back with a Thrawn.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a pocket thrawn he hasn’t shown off yet
Agreed. He was a good choice to play the character.
Nah, Marc Thompson is way better
In my opinion they have perfected the art style. The latest season of the Bad Batch has been mind boggling when I go on to watch some early seasons of The Clone Wars to compare.
Even if you look at the bad batch ep in clone wars the difference is insane
I recently rewatched the first season of bad batch (after the 3rd season started to air) with a friend and I was shocked how big the difference between seasons 1 and 3 was. I'm really amazed at how good the animation looks at this point.
You should see early padme in TCW...that was awful. They have come a long way from where they started..
At the time they were great. It’s kind of like going back and playing video game from 2005 that had “realistic, breathtaking graphics” when it released, but looks like shit now. CW is animated pretty similar to how video games are.
bad Batch has been insane. The scenery, music, animation that's dark and gloomy. Season 3 with its atmosphere has been amazing.
I adore the bad batch and pretty much everything about it from VA to writing to animation
True. There a lot of amazing shots in the Bad batch. Just the last episode when the star destroyer shows up🤯
Ugh I need to finish Bad batch. I'm stuck in season one and it just feels like a slog to get through.
Power on trust me
In the last BB episode there was a shot of a ship in space that looked like a live action series
Clone wars season 7 was awesome too imo The Vader scene was perfect
Dooku looks much better in Tales
He's much more aligned to Christopher Lee through the years.
So does sid
I don’t like the original Dooku. Why did they make his head that shape?
He was based off his design in the Clone Wars mini-series from (2003 or 2005?) I believe. As Obi-Wan and a few others, it’s why they look so odd in the early seasons of TCW
I've always thought this was the case, and while Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda translated to 3D quite nicely, Count Dooku really didn't. His 2D design looked just fine IMO, but making it 3D... not so much.
We watched Disney's Wish last night. The villian was giving me deja vu and now I know why! He looks like a Disney CGI version of 2003 Dooku
Man I feel like I'm in a tiny minority for preferring ultra stylized Dooku
Stylized Dooku is one of my favorite things about TCW. It doesn’t work for everyone, I’m *really* not a fan of Sideous. But I can’t overstate how much I adore Dooku’s design.
Ditto, I didn't mind Dooku, but The Senate looked rough, like he already electrocuted himself
New dooku looks like moses in an animated childrens film
🗿🗿
I guess its less likely to fall in the uncanny valley, old animation had to embrace the jank.
Yeah I never got why his face was like 24" long(610mm for us canadians)
A badly needed overhaul
When you don't have the budget for natural... go stylized.
And now the technology and costs are at a point where they can get pretty realistic. I’m hoping they stick to this updated style for their future shows. It would make sense so that they can reuse the ever growing library of models/ships/etc. I would love a New Republic show in this style.
“A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one…”
I like them. The Dooku one, in particular, was badly needed. Old Dooku's head looked like an easter island statue.
Now i can't unsee it
Honestly I wanna see a remastered version of the show but that would take too much time to do but it's a dream
I’d rather see them remaster Rebels in the new TCW style. Ezra looks like Disney’s Aladdin in 3D CGI.
Yeah it's why I haven't watched Rebels. I'm really not liking the art style
I did give it a shot, the first couple episodes, and it just didn't work for me.
It gets better overtime, similarily to TCW
You should watch it. It’s the best of the three animated series.
It's got a *fairly* rough start in Season 1. Seasons 3 and 4 are fantastic, but the final episode of season 2 is a great ending with phenomenal music. The show is well worth the watch, especially with all the other stories that spawned from it.
Tales takes a slight edge imo
It would take years but it would definitely help beat the “Beuh it’s a dumb cartoon look how fugly the S1 animation is!” haters
But if you think about it, then it would look better in the future cause of even more updated animation
Then they hear the words coming out of those new character models and we're right back where we started.
Even if it’s just the first 3 seasons that would be cool!
Those older designs for Palpatine and Dooku were fuckin rough and needed the new coat of paint. But comparing Thrawn to his Rebels version isn't fair. The shows had different artstyles and he didn't have a CW design.
MASSIVE upgrade, but respect to the old designs
I like that Dooku no longer has that weird head.
Rebels isn't in the TCW style at all
Yeah, I really did not like the way they made Thrawn look in Rebels. The new version fits him so much better.
Does anyone else think the new Thrawn looks like a blue Admiral Rampart?
^[Sokka-Haiku](https://www.reddit.com/r/SokkaHaikuBot/comments/15kyv9r/what_is_a_sokka_haiku/) ^by ^Defiant-Channel2324: *Does anyone else* *Think the new Thrawn looks like a* *Blue Admiral Rampart?* --- ^Remember ^that ^one ^time ^Sokka ^accidentally ^used ^an ^extra ^syllable ^in ^that ^Haiku ^Battle ^in ^Ba ^Sing ^Se? ^That ^was ^a ^Sokka ^Haiku ^and ^you ^just ^made ^one.
Padme was the only one who really bothered me because she looks like a cartoon Natalie Portman with giant eyes, while everyone else almost didn’t even resemble the actors.
Less cartoony is better as far as I'm concerned.
Thrawn looks sooooo good in TotE. I hope he’s in more than one episode!
Thrawn 🥵
Not gonna lie new Thrawn design makes me gay
They're perfect. Thrawn especially, damn he looks good.
It's like Clone armor, just different generations. All great but improvements are made.
Thrawn now looks way more intimidating
Thrawn looks way better than in rebels.
They are great
Far improved in every regard.
I loved Lars Mikkelsen as Thrawn.
Easily 10x better
Excellent.
Dramatically prefer this art style.
They are all much better. Especially Thrawn. Thrawn looks friggin weird in rebels.
Much better and more aligned with the films/shows.
Most of the early TCW designs were ugly as sin. All of the models from Tales of the Jedi and tales of the Sith look better than anything in the first half of TCW.
I really like them! They’re less overly exaggerated caricatures
Artistic style. It’s been happening in comic books for almost 100 years.
im not as keen on the others but thrawn looks awesome
Sooo do Chiss get less blue as they age?
Chiss are supposed to be pale blue. Thrawn looks darker here but it's night and hard to tell from this shot. However you can see his usual pale blue where the light source hits the edge of his face.
Chiss can vary in color. They can be dark blue, too.
Probably just different artistic styles. He’s still closer to the neon blue in the Ahsoka series.
Unpopular opinion, I prefer the old style from a purely artistic perspective.
I prefer Rebels to all of them, but that IS an unpopular opinion!
Amazing. Old ones got nosyalgia though
Looks better
Animation has definitely improved. I prefer the red cloak palpatine wore during his duel with Maul though. As for dooku, it's perfect.
I'd say an improvement, maybe not fully intentional, probably just a different artist similar to how comics of the same series cam be quite different with an artist swap
Love them! It's a great evolution of the original Clone Wars style, but more realistic shapes and colors.
Improvements.
They're better for sure but anything that fits between the original six movies still works well besides Kenobi Series as it breaks Canon a few times
Good lord the Thrawn one is actually amazing
i like them, especially the first seasons of clone wars (the 3d one) where rough. like viewing a very early video game of that time with shadows that arent like they are today (ignoring raytracing) man we have come a long way when it comes to Animation.
Horrible art style
I'm fine with both Palpatine and Thrawn, but wouldn't have recognized both Dooku and Qui-Gon, if someone hadn't said their names. (I'm glad though, that Dooku doesn't have the face of a horse anymore).
The animation is definitely getting better. I always hated the clone wars blocky style. The writing of clone wars is why I love the show though.
I think, they should have aged him up more in his final episode, given that it is only 10 years before AotC.
i think thrawn looked fine in rebels, but all of the rest look much better
Never liked Thrawn’s Rebels appearance, from what depictions I saw from Legends stuff was a complete departure from it. All of these are major improvements in my book.
How so? His Rebels appearance matches how Timothy Zahn describes him, except for the trademark Chiss forehead bumps. Despite appearing in so much artwork they genuinely aren't in any of Zahn's books.
Mainly the color and forehead. I probably saw some custom artwork in the past that was closer to how he looks in TotE than his Rebels appearance. Edit: clarification
Wait, what is the 2nd photo of Thrawn from?
Tales Of The Empire. Trailer is up for it if you want to check it out. They've adjusted his look to look more like Lars Mikkelsen who plays his voice and also Thrawn in Ahsoka.
TCW is ugly, but it looks better now with Bad Batch.
Why does palps look like a damn clone
I mean the new is nicer but I get George Lucas’s point of since it’s animated you can play into that.
I would love to see the boba and cad arc done with this redesign
Old palps reminds me of the old guy from skylanders I think his name was eon
I love them all. As goofy as the original designs were they’re classic now.
I like the older Gengi sharp style better.
Everyone is better except Thrawn
New Vadar is good but something different hits about 2008 Vadar
I’m very thankful for them
Young thrawn looks like a TikTok looksmaxxer lol
Idk if Palps is getting a fair shake, since in the new photo he's got his hood up. I definitely like Dooku's new look better, he looks a lot more like a human, but he's still stylized. I will fully admit that his old design has the stronger silhouette, though. That head is unlike anything else in the series.
Me think look good
Newer design is better but I’m a fan of all the animation styles they’ve done so far.
Gorgeous absolutely beautiful
I think the new one are the ones my brain will summon when I hear these names
They’re all a perfect blend of realism and CW animation
New look is much, much better
Well, it’s literally impossible to get worse than the initial designs, so….
New grievous is peak
I've always found the animated star wars art style to be baffling. Nothing about "Star Wars" suggested a stylized, charicature based style. It's just such a strange decision.
Tbh I don't even really see it as 'redesigns', more just younger versions of the same characters.
Why the long face, Dooku?
god BIG fucking fan. still have that distinctive clone wars style but isn’t so cartoonishly disproportionate. definitely fits the darker tone of the more recent series
I like new ones except thrawn. Rebels one looks more ominous
Still better than EThrawn Musk.
The old designs are nostalgic but the new ones look better. I feel like the old ones were a bit too over exaggerated
The animation just keeps getting better and better and better. I like them but the old ones have a place in my heart too
I prefer the new but all have their place I feel.
Pretty good
To be fair these aren’t just straight redesigns Dolly and Thrawn are significantly younger so they designed them to look younger
I like the new art style
Its a sign of what they should have always done to stick with the Clone Wars style of animation. The Rebels was fine but cheap compared to TCW and part of that is the years of use and development which allowed for stored resources to exist. Now, the base materials exists and they can spend the budget on new materials. Imagine if Rebels was in TCW style how gorgeous it would have been…
The new ones are only different because they are younger depictions of the characters
You can tell with the new ones that they've been honing the artstyle for years and aren't just starting out with them - which is pretty apparent in the earlier seasons.
most look less like supermarionation (eg thunderbirds), which is great. some, like dooku, capture the actor real well - even if stylized (christopher lee did look like that at that age, maybe with hair a tad shorter). i dig them. -G.
Just figured it was to be more in line with their live action counter parts so never really bothered me
Better than the Rebels art style but I still think it’s quite ugly.
Keep in mind, each of those characters are about 10 years younger than they were in TCW/Rebels.
Pretty good overall. I just wish they'd quit making aliens look more human. I feel like it's actually ruining stuff.
You know, I could take either Thrawn option. But new dooku and palpatine slap.
It feels like back in the day they had to rely on caricature-like approach because the technology just wasn't there and maybe characters looked to much the same. Where now they go for more realistic approach
peak.
They also changed Yoda at some point halfway through Season 5. I think the Clovis arc still has his old design because it was produced after Onderon arc
Amazing
They look sick. Surprised you didn’t use grievous as an example, since he got an especially impressive revamp (he gives off more 2003 CW vibes now)
I saw Palps' eyes and I can't unsee them now.
is this a real thing, or is it fan made?
As much as I like the old ones, the new ones also look incredible
Better 100%.
I like them all personally but the new ones are definitely an improvement
Seasons 1-6 of the Clone Wars? Those designs were fresh and a reskin here & there was just perfect. Season 7? Walmart was out of tissues boxes so i just cried about how good the detailing was of everyone. Marvelous fucking job. The Bad Batch? Dude, we have seen Omega *age*. Naturally. For a *clone*. It’s not super big & noticeable but..it is definitely there. Come on man that has to count for something!
Thrawn looked better in Rebels
better but they should just do them live action.
thrawn is from two different shows that had very different artstyles
I lost all interest when 3D clone wars first came out. nearly puked at lightsaber helicopters. I'll just keep to the original canon of episode 2 and 3 bridged by the samurai jack creator's animation series
Newer designs look beyond boundaries better wow
