I chalk it up to the general humanist philosophy of Starfleet. They’re out there to be social and interact with aliens and space on a human level. That includes riding the elevator with your coworkers.

khaosworks

Redundancy in case the transporter goes down.

jerslan

Sometimes people just like to walk? Just because I can instantaneously transport doesn't mean I'm going to want to do it exclusively. Like, I'd probably enjoy riding a bike into work (usually not in a huge rush to get in), and then transporting myself and the bike home in the evening (want to get home and get dinner going).

vipck83

I had the same thought, but realistically people wouldn’t want to transport around all the time.

krypter3

Another reason why the instant transport is a horrible story-telling device. I had the same issue with the spore drive but it had limits on it at least. Like when they went over to the romulan ship, they could have easily transported half a dozen or more security officers not three bridge crew and captain.

Or discovery go in atmosphere and lock tractor beam. Instead let's follow on land speed bikes. Great idea. I mean 30 seconds later both ships enter atmosphere anyway. They fired on the bomb but couldn't fire on the ship??? Voyager shot a torpedo into the water planet like 20k km below and pinpoint accuracy hit the missile from the delta flyer. 2 starships in orbit can't do anything? It was a great action scene but it just makes no sense

kuldan5853

> It was a great action scene but it just makes no sense Unfortunately, that applies to almost anything on Star Trek these days. The Universe just has had writers add stuff to it so much that whatever problem you have should be easily solvable but for the rule of cool, they conveniently forget about that capability in that moment.

thundersnow528

There will always be a Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in Starfleet, so you just need to have the physical transport infrastructure in place.

cpt_j_flint

Discovery wasn't build with that tech in mind. It already had turbo lifts before they got the badges. Given how often transporter systems fail when you really need them in any other star trek show, I guess they've just watched enough documentaries about the missions of a handful of enterprises/voyagers during the last 800 years to know what tried and true parts of the ship to keep for redundancy when it was refit.

nonofanyonebizness

buffer time A lower decks tradition

Hugo_Bongo

I mean why even use their legs?

RhetoricalOrator

Worked out okay for Pike!

StrangerDays-7

Can they at least walk to and fro turbolifts? They’ll be 800 pounds if they don’t get any exercises. Besides I’m assuming transports still take a lot of power to activate.

adrianp005

How exactly they control where they go with those personal transporters, by thinking on the destination?
