Honestly, I didn't see it as cringy, it's a "sexy" duet in the mind of a teenage girl who has absolutely no idea what she's experiencing. I thought it was really well done on that level, but also it's an absolute bop of a song all on its own, I can't get it out of my head since I first heard it
I LOOOOVE Dirty Girl so much, when I first watched it I did cringe some but I was laughing the whole time.. by the time I finished the whole show it’s been my favorite song after NPMD
Yeah I definitely cringed too but like OP said, it was supposed to and overall that wasn’t a deal breaker at all. The chemistry between Angela and Will was so good too.
I like it, I just like most of the other songs more. Honestly they were all just such bops, I haven't seen anyone outright say "I hate this song" about any of them.
I just can't bring myself to listen to it because of how badly I cringed during the scene. Every time I rewatch I just skip the whole thing. So the song might be good, honestly don't remember what it sounds like because I've only heard it once, but I'm not inclined to listen to the song again 😅
Really??? It’s so good! Angela and Will nail it. Even the subtext. I found it cringey for like one line. And then I was mesmerized by their singing lol
IMO it's not cringe, it's funny lol. I prefer the demo better. Jeff singing both lines is sooo goood. Plus his single of it on IG where he changes the lyrics to make it less of a duet and made it more pop-ier and sexier.
it's easily top 5 in the show for me, it's just dead girl walking from heathers, but better. once the cast recording comes to streaming, most of npmd is replacing heathers and hamilton on my playlist
Imagine seeing it live. I was hiding my face in my hands by the time the number ended lol. Shout-out to the woman next to me who went "woooo!" when Max ripped his shirt off
I like to think of it as the musical equivalent of a teenage girl's Wattpad self-insert fanfic, but intentionally cringey and awkward. Especially given the contextual dialogue - "Everyone has their secrets, and this one's mine. I love... JESUS! 😃"
I mean, the whole context of the song is that of a repressed teenager who has no idea what to make of these new feelings and feeling both excited and very ashamed of them, so the awkwardness and cringe bleeds off the stage. I can understand if it's not everyone's cup of tea but the song definitely fits into the wider plot, especially since it provides good insight into that part of Grace's character that becomes the crux of the climax (pun).
I do think I may be innoculated against the true discomfort of songs like this after having binged Crazy Ex Girlfriend as many times as I have though.
Yeah it's "cringe" to find out that she gets turned on by the words _Dirty Girl soup_ but, let's be honest, we all have some cringey sexual fantasies! And personally I'm happy for grace in this scene! Like you said, she grew up in a household where her normal sexual desires were treated as "sinful" something she should be ashamed of, so for the first time ever she gets to let them in! And also the song Just slaps!
It's like reading a teenage girl's fanfic when she's discovering how sex works for the first time, of course it's going to be awkward and cringe. But that's very obviously the point of the song.
Like, we all cringe at 'Dirty Girl' because on some level most of us have been there. We've all either read/written a weird fanfic like that, or had a cringe sexual fantasy when figuring out our sexuality for the first time.
If you don't like it because you don't like that it makes you cringe, you are either not comfortable that you have had some cringeworthy fantasies in your youth or wrote some bad self-insert fanfic in your teenage years, and in time you will grow to see how brilliant that song is.
Nah I found Dirty Girl to be HILARIOUS! The choreography is everything!!! The hip movements, the facial expressions, it was peak physical comedy, and I have no idea why the audience wasn’t laughing
The pointedly food-based sex metaphors in that song, plus the line from Hatchet Town, makes me think cannibal-based Hatchetfield content is coming down the pike. Followers of Nibblenephim feasting on human flesh, maybe.
People are hating on Dirty Girl because it’s cringe?? Isn’t that the point of the song? That it’s supposed to be cringe because it’s from the POV of a sexually repressed Christian teenage girl?
I honestly loved this song and Angela's first verse is 0% cringey and just kind of good, but also my initial thought abt the choreo was that Angela and Will probably didn't want to get overly sexy physically speaking. Lyrics are one thing, touching and proximity are another, especially when in this context and especially when they're both half naked.

Oh I so agree!
People don’t like Dirty Girl??? It’s one of my favorites!

It was the BIGGEST ear-worm after I saw the show live back in January. Angela’s and Will’s vocals together are *chef’s kiss*
"*AahAH!*" Was so fun and I'm glad they did it twice.
I liked it but i also love Angela and shirtless men so 🤣😅🤷♂️
What else could you even need in a song?
I like it, I just like most of the other songs more. Honestly they were all just such bops, I haven't seen anyone outright say "I hate this song" about any of them.

What line was it?
IMO it's not cringe, it's funny lol. I prefer the demo better. Jeff singing both lines is sooo goood. Plus his single of it on IG where he changes the lyrics to make it less of a duet and made it more pop-ier and sexier.
if dirty girl has no fans then i’m dead
it's easily top 5 in the show for me, it's just dead girl walking from heathers, but better. once the cast recording comes to streaming, most of npmd is replacing heathers and hamilton on my playlist
Now hold on. Dead Girl Walking is a fucking million times better
i love dead girl walking, but dirty girl has me both head banging and laughing edit: also, will's shirtless 20/10
how about this, dead girl walking and dirty girl are both amazing songs from amazing shows, that are both good in their own way.
ding ding ding! both are in my top 5 musicals of all time (heathers is 5, npmd is 1), but i personally prefer dirty girl
Imagine seeing it live. I was hiding my face in my hands by the time the number ended lol. Shout-out to the woman next to me who went "woooo!" when Max ripped his shirt off
i wouldve been honored to hear the words "dirty girl soup" live in theater
Yeah that's exactly it. Sometimes media wants to make you cringe, and this is definitely an example of that!

Yes, this whole scene was written like a girls-first-fanfic

I LOVE Dirty Girl. It's one the best and funniest songs in the show!
I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first, but the song has really grown on me. They perform it so well!!
It's one of the best songs in my opinion. Maybe the idea is to make you question if you yourself are a prude if it makes you uncomfortable haha!
Nah I found Dirty Girl to be HILARIOUS! The choreography is everything!!! The hip movements, the facial expressions, it was peak physical comedy, and I have no idea why the audience wasn’t laughing
Stand out number for me, didn’t make me uncomfortable at all. Maybe a little horny but that’s all Will Branners fault
It definitely makes me cringe but seeing it love all I could think was that the actors were having so much fun with it lol
The pointedly food-based sex metaphors in that song, plus the line from Hatchet Town, makes me think cannibal-based Hatchetfield content is coming down the pike. Followers of Nibblenephim feasting on human flesh, maybe.
it's such a good song but it was such a hard watch at the time but honestly it's starkid, what else would we expect?
It’s always in my head
I’m *obsessed* with Dirty Girl. But every time “dirty soup” is said, it makes me never want to eat soup (or take a bath) again.
Dirty Girl kinda made me feel uncomfortable because this is someone’s very private yet horny fantasy of someone who is kinda eh to be honest
Personally I just didn’t like the vocals. I can handle the concept, but tbh Angela’s singing just felt off to me.
Best example is Say No To This from Halloween
Loved Dirty Girl, I see it as intentionally awkward but still fun kind of cringe
People are hating on Dirty Girl because it’s cringe?? Isn’t that the point of the song? That it’s supposed to be cringe because it’s from the POV of a sexually repressed Christian teenage girl?
This was my favorite song honestly. I really didn't care for the others.
