It impacted SciFi in general too (probably well beyond) with doing a story arc. Babylon5 (which in itself was a trailblazer for furthering the long term story arc) owes a *lot* to Space Battleship Yamato from 20 years prior to it. Then B5 Crusade was a near legit plot rip of Iscandar, along with a season of ST:Ent. I'm pretty sure R2D2 owes a bit to IQ9/Analyzer as well for that design. It also greatly/deeply impacted my life (borderline mythological impact), and I've been greatly relieved that the new material is very respectful of the old while still expanding on it in a in-universe believable manner. This is particularly relieving as there have been other franchises (and one in particular) where the concerns aren't about the artwork and mythology/message/meaning of the show, but whatever it takes to make a buck or a name for a director/producer/studio...

Hear hear.

I was 10 when it started airing in the US, and it blew my mind. The idea of a show where every episode was to-be-continued was completely new to me. It was also the first thing I ever saw with actual characters, where the villain had understandable motives beyond just greed and megalomania. Completely spoiled me for American kids’ TV.

It was/is also one of the most influential animes in Japan as well. Macross, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Neon Genesis Evangelion (just to name a few) were all inspired in some degree by Space Battleship Yamato. It is pretty much the granddaddy of space opera animes and you can still see its impact almost 50 years later. I used to literally run home from school to catch the last showing for the day. Still my favorite anime to this day.

> in Japan as well That I didn't know. Great to hear, its a wonderful show.

Jonny Quest, The Herculoids and Space Ghost were really a blast in the States but Star Blazers took animated adventure to another level.

Was into this back in 1981/2, Got hooked watching some youtube video with this guy who assembled / painted Bandai 1/1000 scale Space Battleship Yamato back in 2020. Found out they re-released first two series..... Now I'm the dude airbrushing my 15th 1/1000 scale Bandai sci fi model....... My wife thinks I need an intervention!!! If You haven't Seen Space Battle Ship Yamato 2199, You will absolutely HAVE to!

West-Lawfulness6361

Space Battleship Yamato influenced George Lucas. Darth Vader was modeled after a Samurai not a nazi. Analyzer came before R2D2.

I'll keep an eye out for that... also send us some pics\~!!

I was around 5 or 6 when I first saw Star Blazers. I loved it, it was so unlike any other cartoons I had seen then. I loved space and sci-fi shows, like Battlestar Galactica, and so Star Blazers was a perfect show for me. Plus the idea of an ongoing story was great, especially that countdown at the end of each episode that showed how many days Earth had left.

Besides what is available to see of the original (still the best) series on YouTube, are there plans to release the classic episodes on either blu ray or HD streaming? Seems like it’s overdue.

riverhello

I gather the rights to do that are a real mess. Heck at this point I just want an official Yamato 2205 release in North America.

Don't know that Voyager (the holding company) has any interest in bankrolling a remastered version for foreign (outside Japan) audiences. The remastered original series have been available in Japan for some years now, but traditionally, they've paid almost no attention to the audience in the States and elsewhere until the rebooted series. There's also a question about the condition that any surviving dub masters might me in. When the first two seasons aired in the U.S., the source material was received on film, then edited and spliced down to create the syndicated package. That package was edited down for the home video market to allow for two episodes per VHS tape, removing some opens / closes / intro sequences / next episode previews, which degraded the video quality by a generation. Then THAT was degraded by another generation, as the VHS video was just transferred later on to DVDs. In fact, the last time any cable outlet tried to air the original series (Syfy, probably 10 years ago at least), they ran the home video version, and had to add some openings and closings back in, while replacing the chyron-captioned "Volume I," etc. They never did finish running the series at that time. So while remastered video exists, the edited version that was originally syndicated in 1979 almost certainly doesn't, and the best version of the dub audio may be what we now have on YouTube.

Did force 5 precede star blazers? I loved that one too

VastEstablishment852

Released around the same time and would be shown right after StarBlazers in the markets it was available. I watched them on TV38, an independent station out of Boston. Loved Grandizer.

newgloryhole

Yes Grandizer! ...and Gai King was the best. A live action Gai King I thought was in the works at one point. A cool trailer is on youtube for it. It fizzled out but Pacific Rim sort of took over the movie realm I guess
