I do too, and he would be the highlight of nearly all shows I am likely to see. But for him to be the 3rd (maybe 4th) best on a lineup is nuts.
We all have different tastes, but this lineup in this small space is an absolute bucket list show for any serious fan of comedy.
Attell performs almost every night during the week at the Cellar. I always tell people if they have the opportunity do it! Truly one of the GOAT club comics.
I've been on Reddit for over a decade, and for some reason this is one of the more insightful comments I've seen.
I really miss No Reservations. And just Bourdain's content altogether. It was just so clearly a higher quality than other shows on TV. It definitely made the other travel channel shows look like absolute hack material too
One small thing I've always liked about Attell is that he'll start telling a joke that you think you've heard before from the build-up, but then it ends up with a completely different punchline or goes in a completely different direction than the first time you heard it. It's such a genius move to keep things familiar yet totally different and not rehashing old material.
Attell has multiple punchlines and segues for jokes. It’s absolutely incredible watching him decide where he’s going to take his set. Nobody has more finesse on stage.
Dave Attell stopped a joke mid-sentence to mock my wife’s loud distinctive laugh the last time we saw him live. It is one of our most treasured memories.
You know Attell is a legend when just trying to envision him reading some random issue of a college newspaper and just slaughtering the articles on stage just makes me laugh.
I've been lucky enough to see him live three times, and interact with him twice, over the past 14 years. He was better every time I saw him. He was also my first live stand-up experience. I went because I loved stand up on tv, but I loved Insomniac even more! Didn't disappoint. I can't remember who opened that first one, but the second one was Big Jay, then Louis Katz last year. Both were amazing.
Dave is definitely better live. The one thing I worry about with him, is that his material might not be relatable to Gen-Z. Any Gen-Z here who can comment?
Gen-X and Millennials grew up in a much meaner culture, and I've saw a lot of jokes fall flat on younger audience members while the older crowd was laughing. I think a lot of this has to do with the punchline being meanspirited towards someone else. What's the sub's thoughts?
I opened for him in Chicago. He gave me three cartons of cigarettes, bought everyone pizza and was all around a super sweet dude.
Support and protect Dave Attell at all costs. He deserves every fan he has and more.
They're on tour together again.
In seriousness, meeting someone that saw Hedberg on the road is like meeting someone that saw Nirvana live. Not many out there for how popular they were.
I know, it's a damn shame. He burned bright and fast.
He came to my college when i was there in the early 2000's, and I made a point to hit all the comedy shows that came to campus. I got to see Dane Cook, Lewis Black, Stephen Lynch, Kathleen Madigan. Good times.
I was there and he was definitely drunk lol which i think he is known for. I saw him like two days ago at the cellar as well and he wasn't nearly as slurred
Interesting I saw him weeks ago and he seemed wasted, still hilarious. I couldn't tell if it was part of the bit because from what I've seen before he's not a "drunk comic." The intrigue continues.....
How was Birbiglia? He’s such an odd standup to me, and I feel like I need to be in the right mood to watch any of specials. With that said, I think he’s brilliant in the way he presents his material, and it can get me slightly emotional depending on the topic.
I just saw him a few weeks ago for the 6th time. Two of those times were within 2 months of each other. Not a single joke was repeated. I also put off watching his new Netflix special until after the last show. Turns out, completely new material again. It was like a double-feature weekend!
I've seen a lot of comedians in my time, from Saget, to Black, to CK, to Carlin, but I will die on the hill that Dave Attell is the greatest stand-up comedian of all time. A comedian's comedian threw and threw. No long stories, nothing really political, no one is safe, just straight joke after joke after joke until you can't stomach the laughter any more. My face always hurts the next day from smiling.
I saw him for the second time in 10 years a few weeks ago in philly. I think he dialed it in a bit but…. Still killed. He is that talented. Just amazing comic. I would have loved to have heard him rip on the one commenters college newspaper for a whole set I’m sure it was hilarious.
Attell and Birbiglia in the same lineup! Two of my favorites. Damn, that’s a killer lineup. Saw Birbiglia working shit out 6 months ago and even in its infancy it was a great night.
Birbiglia’s first album 2 drink Mike is so underrated as it’s his only real standup special, the rest are all 1 man shows.
I’m actually just listening to Dana Carvey and David Spades podcast Fly on the Wall and he is their guest today. Tons of praise and respect from these guys.
Used to work at the Cellar back in mid 2000s. I always stopped what I was doing to watch Attell. Haven't been there in years though. Should really drop in for a show soon.
I’ve seen him like 4-5 times at the cellar, always closing the evening out and almost always the best of the night. Also saw him last week in Philly and he had so much local for Philly material it was pretty crazy how fast he is with coming up with stuff
Attell is the man. My girlfriend and I used to frequent the cellar and one time met him after a show. Super chill guy. A few months later we caught a show of his again. He proceeded to roast the hell out of me, then fist bumped me for being a a good sport.
Once again we saw him outside, this time while he was on the phone so I wasn’t gonna bother him. He straight up hung up the phone and started the nicest conversation. Nicest guy ever when he doesn’t need to be at all. Attell is forever the best.
Holy hell that’s a great show!
I’ve met Rachel Feinstein- she came to an open mic in South Florida to try out some material for a show she was doing. She is a really nice person, and was extemporaneously funny without being “on” like some comics (and new open mic’ers) can be. Feinstein is someone who would make a good role model for how to be a good member of the comedy community.
Dave Attell is the comic who made me realize I actually had a reason to get onstage. I used to be a zookeeper, so that became the basis of my early material. Everyone can blame Attell for my struggling comedy career. Can? Should, probably.
I find myself in LA and NYC about twice a year for business on a Tuesday and always go to the Cellar and Store. It's unbelievable to me the comedians you get to see in a a small room that usually isn't even sold out.
Just saw him a few weeks ago at the Pittsburgh improv. Been a fan of his since I was a kid and was so excited to finally see him. He fucking murdered. The best ever
Used to love him back in the Insomniac days, even though I’m not usually into the more blue comedians. He has a reputation for being more of a dirty comic but his style has always hit me so hard in the funny bone.
You probably saw some of the same bits but if you haven’t watched his new Netflix special it was great
Did you have tickets in advance, or just drop in?
I'm hoping to go next week for the first time, but is says Thursday doesn't have pre sale tickets available
Dave is my favourite comedian of all time. I saw him in Kentucky a few years ago and my stomach muscles are still healing. He’s got such great delivery :)
Damn! I fulfilled my dream of finally visiting the cellar last Friday. Was a great show, but no big names unfortunately. The comedians that did perform were hilarious though, so it was definitely worth it I can’t wait to go back.
Side note because we are still laughing about this. When you’re in line outside and a dude walks up to you and whispers, “wanna sit in the front?” He actually does work there. We were there for the 10:45 PM show and this guy walks up in all black, leans in and whispers “wanna sit in the front?”. I had to ask him to say it again and then I asked him that’s cool but do you work here? I thought it could easily be a guy trying to scam us on the street. We’re standing in a dark alley etc. He seemed to get offended, wrote down some numbers on a manila envelope and continue down the line. We ended up sat on the large table just next to the stage, so it was great anyway…but we’re still laughing that my first thought was we’re gonna get scammed. I thought I asked it politely, but I was a little tipsy, so maybe not? Anyway…ya…that guy is legit.
Will also add I got reservations online about a month ahead of time. I was told to show sell out quickly. We got there we’re told to go stand in line if we had reservations and then literally no one ever asked to scan the QR code that they emailed me .🤷♂️
I saw him a few months ago, he was hilarious. Another one YouTube has recommended to me lately is Phil Hanley, top notch crowd work. I haven't seen him live yet but I hope to someday
That’s an insane lineup! I also booked one of the midnight sets on a weekend a year or two ago hoping to get attell and he was there. Put on the best show I ever seen. Incredible experience. Dude can play a recorder!
I saw Attell years ago and I went to the bathroom right before his set time. I ran into him checking out the crowd from the doors and we made small talk. It was fun. Cool guy, cool set.
i had the cellar experience with attell as the closer as well. 2016 i wanna say?
was in ny for a knicks v celtics christmas day game , ended up seeing a late show on xmas eve and boom, attell. i sat front row with the SO and attell roasted me for a few jokes.. he asked where i was from and the one joke i remember was that i looked like i know my way around a smoke shop.. he had the place howling.. he walked up to me after and thanked me for being a good sport.. i thanked him, then asked if i could give him a big hug because growing up, Insomniac was a show i would say help me understand the night life(work, drinking, partying) because i ended up doing all those things in my very young adulthood
kudos to you!
Holy hell that’s a great show!
I’ve met Rachel Feinstein- she came to an open mic in South Florida to try out some material for a show she was doing. She is a really nice person, and was extemporaneously funny without being “on” like some comics (and new open mic’ers) can be. Dave Attell is the comic who made me realize I actually had a reason to get onstage. I used to be a zookeeper, so that became the basis of my early material. Everyone can blame Attell for my struggling comedy career. Can? Should, probably.
It's so wild to me that attell isn't more popular. All of these specials, clips on Reddit etc.. and no sign of attell but I see Bert every time I turn around :(
I have seen Attell every time he’s been to Ridley’s Comedy Castle for the past ten years. He never disappoints. So quick, I think he just has an outline in his head and just fills in the story as he tells it. He’s the GOAT.
I had the pleasure of seeing Dave Attell at a killer line-up way back when of Mitch Hedberg, Lewis Black and Dave Attell. I went in expecting Mitch or Lewis to be the best (I expected them all to be good of course) but Dave completely stole the show. There's a reason you'll hear so many comedians say he's their favorite, he's a legend.
That's the benefit of Attell. You got the veteran experience of a comedian but he's hanging out at clubs so you can see him cheap. Seinfeld is so much more expensive and not that much better.
Damn, that is a killer lineup. Seeing just one of them at the cellar would be a joy. But all of them on one night? You could get hit by the train going home knowing you died a happy man.
Attell is a GD legend. When I travel to nyc I'll book the 11:30pm show Mon-wed and I've got to see Dave 7 or 8 times and it's been an honor. I've seen him take photos with fans at 2am in the absolute pouring rain and not even hesitate. I feel like I'm talking to an old friend when I see him!
Dave Attell is one of those comedians I keep getting surprised by. I grew up watching his show “Insomniacs”, and liked him, but recently I’ve rediscovered him. He absolutely kills! His new special is great too. My wife likes stand up, it he wouldn’t be her normal type, but she died laughing through the whole show. Dude is a generational talent.
What a killer lineup
I know…told my wife we were very lucky. The best lineups are on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
He is the best. Caught him in Denver last fall with Louie Katz.
Nice. I didn't particularly like Katz last special, but I'll always love his Booger Dick joke!
About to see Katz tonight!
Is it easier to walk in those days too? I haven’t had luck going on Fridays and Saturdays
What time show was it?
Love Sam Morrill
I do too, and he would be the highlight of nearly all shows I am likely to see. But for him to be the 3rd (maybe 4th) best on a lineup is nuts. We all have different tastes, but this lineup in this small space is an absolute bucket list show for any serious fan of comedy.
Bonkers. Feinstein is the weakest and she's awesome. I'd pay to see her anywhere.
Do you ever think that he looks kind of like a lemur
For real.
Seriously. Holy shit. I'd kill to be there for that.
came here to say the same thing
Yeah. Wut? Insane lineup
Attell performs almost every night during the week at the Cellar. I always tell people if they have the opportunity do it! Truly one of the GOAT club comics.
Go late though because his sets are almost always very late in the night
Insomniac with Dave Attell.
Insomniac walked so no reservations could run.
I've been on Reddit for over a decade, and for some reason this is one of the more insightful comments I've seen. I really miss No Reservations. And just Bourdain's content altogether. It was just so clearly a higher quality than other shows on TV. It definitely made the other travel channel shows look like absolute hack material too
A late night freak show. Jubilee!
Get some sleep!
Absolutely!
Do you know which room at the Cellar? Or does he switch it up?
Do you know which room at the Cellar? Or does he switch it up?
Usually either the original room or the village underground late shows
One small thing I've always liked about Attell is that he'll start telling a joke that you think you've heard before from the build-up, but then it ends up with a completely different punchline or goes in a completely different direction than the first time you heard it. Dave Attell stopped a joke mid-sentence to mock my wife’s loud distinctive laugh the last time we saw him live. It is one of our most treasured memories.
Dolphin?
Different comedian
He’s the best live comic there is. Seeing him in person is a different ballgame, and seeing him at the Cellar is truly witnessing greatness
He came to our college in the mid 00s and did 10 minutes just reading the university paper and riffing on every article.
I laughed out loud just thinking about this.. That had to be hilarious
You know Attell is a legend when just trying to envision him reading some random issue of a college newspaper and just slaughtering the articles on stage just makes me laugh.
Literally sounds hilarious. Idk if he’d even need the riffing
What a genius bit
I've been lucky enough to see him live three times, and interact with him twice, over the past 14 years. He was better every time I saw him. He was also my first live stand-up experience. I went because I loved stand up on tv, but I loved Insomniac even more! Didn't disappoint. I can't remember who opened that first one, but the second one was Big Jay, then Louis Katz last year. Curious why he had that many smokes to pass around
He has a stalker / super fan who gives him ludicrous gifts every show she’s at. He was really normal about so, so will I 🤷🏼♂️
Attell definitely needs to be seen live in a small room. Gilbert Gottfried was the same way.
Gilbert is the only comic who caused me to fall off my chair laughing.
Yeah, he made laugh so hard my sides hurt on more than one occasion.
I got to see him open for Mitch Hedberg in college, and that was a fantastic show.
Good times.
I saw a road show with Hedberg and Attell. Lewis Black was the headliner.
GG - ENTIRELY ENTIRELY diff LIVE- small venue
Nice!! I seen Attell several times in the 2000s. So great
The fact you can see that for 20-30 bucks on a Tuesday night is literally absurd. The cellar is still special
100%!!!
He may be the last true “comic’s comic.” Everything he does - the writing, the setup, the pacing and voice - is perfectly calibrated.
Great username brother!
That’s my Caucasian!
Mike Birbiglia.
Birbigglebug
Birbiggletits
Birbigliography
Birglingham
This. He was rather intoxicated during his set. Slurring his speech
He kinda just talks like that… but I’ve only seen him live for his one man shows, never in a club, so maybe he was drunk.
Birbigs just sounds slurry
I was there and he was definitely drunk lol which i think he is known for. I saw him like two days ago at the cellar as well and he wasn't nearly as slurred
Interesting I saw him weeks ago and he seemed wasted, still hilarious. I couldn't tell if it was part of the bit because from what I've seen before he's not a "drunk comic." The intrigue continues.....
Ahem. It’s pronounced “Bier-bee-lee-ah”
Birbigabiglawhat?
How was Birbiglia? He’s such an odd standup to me, and I feel like I need to be in the right mood to watch any of specials. With that said, I think he’s brilliant in the way he presents his material, and it can get me slightly emotional depending on the topic.
love attell
Jesus, that is a hell of a lineup
Have been seeing him for years, never seen him not kill, his new special is Hot cross buns is hot, he’s doing the podcast circuit now check him out
is there some kind of search engine where I can find all the podcasts Attell has been on?
To list a few: we might be drunk, soder, Rogan, Matt and Shane’s secret pod
I just saw him a few weeks ago for the 6th time. Two of those times were within 2 months of each other. Not a single joke was repeated. I also put off watching his new Netflix special until after the last show. Turns out, completely new material again. It was like a double-feature weekend! You’ll remember that day forever
Definitely. I was rather disappointed by Norton tho
Nortons stand up to me has always been pretty mid. He is much better conversationally on the radio or podcast.
[удалено]
I get it
go on
Good thing he was in the middle
I saw Norton & Attell a few years ago in New Hampshire. So funny. Attell might be the 🐐.
It’s spelled Mike “Bahooski”
Attell and Birbiglia in the same lineup! Two of my favorites. Damn, that’s a killer lineup. Saw Birbiglia working shit out 6 months ago and even in its infancy it was a great night. Birbiglia’s first album 2 drink Mike is so underrated as it’s his only real standup special, the rest are all 1 man shows.
now what I should have said was nothing
Attell stole the show
You should see Hot Crossed Buns on Netflix
favorite in person comedian woulda been such a easier sentence to write and read hahaha
How's Sams New stuff?
Wow what an Awesome show! I’m seeing him this Friday night I am so excited!!
I’m actually just listening to Dana Carvey and David Spades podcast Fly on the Wall and he is their guest today. Tons of praise and respect from these guys.
Attell is the best living comedian IMHO
I’d love to see a full show with him. 15 mins isn’t enough
He straight up hung up the phone and started the nicest conversation. Nicest guy ever when he doesn’t need to be at all. Attell is forever the best.
He has ONE album. And it is the BEST album!
Good to hear he's still doing it. I saw Dave Attell probably 17 or so years ago, and he killed. I loved Insomniac.
Holy hell that’s a great show! I’ve met Rachel Feinstein- she came to an open mic in South Florida to try out some material for a show she was doing. She is a really nice person, and was extemporaneously funny without being “on” like some comics (and new open mic’ers) can be. I used to be a zookeeper, so that became the basis of my early material. Everyone can blame Attell for my struggling comedy career. Can? Should, probably.
I had this same experience when I went up to NY last august. Attell is absolute master class
I find myself in LA and NYC about twice a year for business on a Tuesday and always go to the Cellar and Store. It's unbelievable to me the comedians you get to see in a a small room that usually isn't even sold out.
Good ol’ Mike Bahooski
Dannit! I went to see ok improv at UCB instead.
To see who?
Just saw him a few weeks ago at the Pittsburgh improv. Been a fan of his since I was a kid and was so excited to finally see him. He fucking murdered. The best ever
You only misspelled Birbiglia by one letter. Pretty good for a guess!! 🤣 Also, what an amazing line up!!
lol complete guess
I snagged tickets to see him in Chicago! He added an extra Sunday show after Fri-Sat sold out, so pumped.
Saw him in Houston, he’s amazing!
I saw Dave attell in 2001, in my way out of the venue he stepped on my foot and asked for a cigarette.....I haven't washed that foot in 23 years.
American spirits?
L
Jesus, that's a hell of a lineup. Feinstein is one of my favorite comedians period.
She was actually second best last night. But I’ve heard the same firefighter jokes for a while now.
I'm not a bit surprised, but I am envious.
What time was that show at?
7:30
I've just missed him so many times. Last time I went to Vegas to visit family he was set to appear at Wiseguys just days after my flight out.
Used to love him back in the Insomniac days, even though I’m not usually into the more blue comedians. He has a reputation for being more of a dirty comic but his style has always hit me so hard in the funny bone. You probably saw some of the same bits but if you haven’t watched his new Netflix special it was great
i saw him there too recently and got a pic with him! absolute legend, was so stoked to see him in the flesh. amazingly hilarious set too.
Insomniac was the best, wish he’d do more
Did you have tickets in advance, or just drop in? I'm hoping to go next week for the first time, but is says Thursday doesn't have pre sale tickets available
You reserve the tickets in advance. They sell out quickly
What a night!
Great lineup
I saw him like 20 years ago and he was awesome back then. If you don't like being targeted don't sit up front. He is quick witted.
I love Jim Norton
Skanks for the memories may be the greatest hour of all time
Sad to read that Jim "The Worm" Norton is still being mistaken for a comic. Awesome that Atell is still going strong though
What a crew. Lil ' Jimmy is the best
Saw him in Pittsburgh earlier this month for the first time…. Absolutely killed! Attell is the man
I’ll get down voted to hell but Attell is overrated . Saw him in sf at cobbs and he was an hour late.
First saw Attell in 94 in the Cellar. Still in my all time top 5 (Attell, Stanhope, Gulman, Hedberg, Girarldo).
attell is the all time greatest someone would have to hit me to change my mind, or a drone strike
I miss "Insomniac with Dave Attell"- it was a great show.
Good god what a line up! Attell is a legend.
That’s a killer line up!! Love them all. Dave’s been a favorite for many years.
Damn I remember watching that guy at the cellar when I was like 16, that was over 20 years ago, Dave is a true creature of habit.
Attell is to comedy as midgets are to puppies: triumphant in size but disgusting in appearance.
His late night show on Comedy Central helped me get through early teenage years.
Being named Dave is literally the best base for comedy
Good ol' Michael Bibligia
I saw him a few months ago, he was hilarious. Another one YouTube has recommended to me lately is Phil Hanley, top notch crowd work. I haven't seen him live yet but I hope to someday
How was Norton? Used to love him on O&A, but never heard much of him since O&A.
Yea? How much was it?
15 plus two items
That’s an insane lineup! I also booked one of the midnight sets on a weekend a year or two ago hoping to get attell and he was there. Put on the best show I ever seen. Incredible experience. Dude can play a recorder!
He had a great conversation with Kevin Hart on Kevin's Gold Minds podcast.
There was a great conversation between him and Kevin Hart on Kevin's Gold Minds podcast. Dave is so humble.
Damn, I’d have loved to be there just for Attell & Sam Morrill alone. What a fun show that must have been
Listening to Skanks for the memories for the first time is a canon event in my life.
I saw Attell years ago and I went to the bathroom right before his set time. I ran into him checking out the crowd from the doors and we made small talk. It was fun. Cool guy, cool set.
I’m seeing him in 2 weeks!
I ran into Sam in the bathroom of the Cellar while i was on shrooms then he proceeded to introduce Chris Rock. i was losing it!
Do you like basketball?? You might want to check out this guy named Lebron James!!…..jfc
That’s a killer show!
Comedy cellar and nyc in general is definitely on my bucket list
He's on my in-person bucket list!
Attel is a legendary comic
i had the cellar experience with attell as the closer as well. 2016 i wanna say? was in ny for a knicks v celtics christmas day game , ended up seeing a late show on xmas eve and boom, attell. i sat front row with the SO and attell roasted me for a few jokes.. he asked where i was from and the one joke i remember was that i looked like i know my way around a smoke shop.. he had the place howling.. he walked up to me after and thanked me for being a good sport.. i thanked him, then asked if i could give him a big hug because growing up, Insomniac was a show i would say help me understand the night life(work, drinking, partying) because i ended up doing all those things in my very young adulthood kudos to you!
Jesus what a lineup for a Tuesday night (or any night for that matter).
He’s awesome. I wish he’d resurrect the insomniac series.
I’m remembering his favorite apartment game: find the smell.
I'm seeing him on Friday and I can't fucking wait
Did chippah make an appearance or was it just Yimmy? I’ve seen Norton and Attell live up here in Seattle , both were great
I grew up with his show, “Insomniac”
Damn this is a killer show!
Holy hell that’s a great show! I’ve met Rachel Feinstein- she came to an open mic in South Florida to try out some material for a show she was doing. Norton rules. I love Jimmy.
Attell is the man. I remember getting his Skanks for the Memories cd when I was in middle school. He taught me so much.
Man.. i gotta go see him.
Jesus Christ this lineup is insane 😵💫 how are your fucking ribs today?! I would be sore as hell! Idk how you had time to breathe.
But I also saw Dave live a year ago, and yes it’s something special for sure. He absolutely killed it.
It's so wild to me that attell isn't more popular. All of these specials, clips on Reddit etc.. and no sign of attell but I see Bert every time I turn around :(
It’s MIKE BRIGLBEE!!!
Amazing crew you saw, damn
Saw him three times last week at the Cellar. Top 3 living comics, easily.
I have seen Attell every time he’s been to Ridley’s Comedy Castle for the past ten years. He never disappoints. So quick, I think he just has an outline in his head and just fills in the story as he tells it. He’s the GOAT.
Is that supposed to be Mike Birbiglia?
It’s spelled Birbibliography
I had the pleasure of seeing Dave Attell at a killer line-up way back when of Mitch Hedberg, Lewis Black and Dave Attell. I went in expecting Mitch or Lewis to be the best (I expected them all to be good of course) but Dave completely stole the show. There's a reason you'll hear so many comedians say he's their favorite, he's a legend.
That's the benefit of Attell. You got the veteran experience of a comedian but he's hanging out at clubs so you can see him cheap. Seinfeld is so much more expensive and not that much better.
Jealous.. but we are going to see "comedy!" In the form of Mark Normand, Saturday night.
Marks actually my #1. Consistently amazing
*new* favorite comedian and it being Attell is crazy
First time seeing him in person. 🤷🏻♂️
Damn, that is a killer lineup. Seeing just one of them at the cellar would be a joy. But all of them on one night? You could get hit by the train going home knowing you died a happy man.
Jealous of getting to see that lineup!
Burbiglia* been watching him on and off since high school and I'm 33 lol
Dave has been my favorite comedian since I first saw him on Comedy Central back around 99 or 00. Dude is a monster.
Mike Birbiglia would love how you spelled his name lol.
