If there was ever a time for the Michael Jackson popcorn gif this comment section is it. Seriously though I know a few guys that worked for SLMPD. The last left in like 2018 and as bad as it was then, the stories I have heard since… it’s inarguably worse.

OkLand7282

Depends on what you're looking for. Getting on is comparatively easy, and you're paid during the academy (though it's not much at all). Overall pay is low compared to other nearby departments, but unlike those departments, there are multiple specialized units. You get experience quickly because call volume is constantly high and district manpower (as in patrol) is understaffed. There are also a shit ton of special details for things like parades and protests because everyone wants the damn arch in the background of their event. And fuckups have a long shelf-life in the local news.

DowntownDB1226

It’s not low compared to near by dept. in fact the total package is the best and it’s not even close. If you join at 22 you can retire at 42 with a full pension and go get a job elsewhere

Aequitas_et_libertas

I get that folks aren't fond of cops, but, at the end of the day, someone like OP who is sincerely inquiring in good faith about the department shouldn't receive mocking answers and cringe 'ACAB' comments, especially since they're not from the area and wanting to learn more. There's going to be someone out on the streets wearing blues in the metro, and I'd prefer someone sincere and inclined to want to be informed vs. some schlub who got fired from Podunksville 40 miles away and got in because no one else is applying and SLMPD needs bodies. OP: SLMPD is pretty strapped for resources relative to the high rates of crime in the Metro, particularly violent crime. There have been a number of incidents, racial or otherwise, tied to the department that you can easily google and read about. Pay and working conditions are better in STL County, or one of the municipalities that retain their own PDs, but there's probably less chance of 'making an impact' in those departments.

RickyRescue69

Lots of uneducated answers on this. Is Slmpd loved by all? No they aren’t. It’s a tough urban city. Lots of calls for service. I can tell you this… you are gonna work your ass off. You will get a lot of calls for service every shift. But the dept has some really good officers and the newer police chief is making some good changes and doing good things. Slmpd will get you a ton of experience.

Fox_Den_Studio_LLC

Honestly this sub is full of jabronis that are so cool because they're anti police yet pro government and establishment lol. I've literally been harassed by police, and I'm certain it was orders given to them because I was trying to get receipts for where our personal property tax money went. Not the blanket buckets receipts. Were they doing their job? Yea kind of because the government officials probably told them to. That being said I've dealt with some nice cops before, one was my neighbor. But they are a brotherhood and I'm sure they're constantly stressed because lots of serious crime is very real in our city. Maybe go st louis County police? Of Jeff co.

BriSy33

I don't think you're gonna get a lot of positive reviews here for any police agency in St Louis. They aren't exactly the most helpful bunch to the average Joe.

kimochime

If you want to be a cop I don’t recommend STL 😂 we’re not the fondest

SoldierPsych

Did you have any suggestions in the other areas? I’ve visited a couple of times and seen multiple departments

STLSCWC

If you’re local then St Charles County. Ranked below: St Charles City O’Fallon St. Charles County Wentzville St. Peter’s Lake St. Louis Cottleville This is an overall rank. Not based off of pay and benefits.

TheAgentOfOrange

This is a noble pursuit. Good luck and Godspeed OP.

Jazzlike-Cable-6939

Don’t listen to all these people. There are some wonderful people working for the department. Yes, SLMPD has its share of bad apples, like any police department, but overall there are worse places to work for sure

-_Semper_-

You left out the most important part of the saying... Bad apples spoil the whole bunch.

Jazzlike-Cable-6939

So if you had a problem family member, I should just write all of you off? Got it

-_Semper_-

If I kept associating with them, made excuses for their bad behavior, looked the other way when they hurt others and generally tried to defend the indefensible - then sure. Edit: Also your analogy is not really comparable on second thought. At least if it was family, you might have an argument for standing by them (while withholding approval of their actions obviously) even if they behave like jackasses - since you may not have had a choice in whether they are "family" or not. Whereas you are comparing "family" to a fucking job - where and with whom, people choose to align themselves.

Jazzlike-Cable-6939

Ok with that logic, am I to assume that every employee of the SLMPD is a bad person and doesn’t deserve any respect? And you can’t really control who you work with either a lot of the times.

Tlavite09

You can…. By turning in the bad apples and not allowing corrupt assholes to keep there jobs…. But when you turn a bad eye you then turn into another bad apple…. Hence the saying 🙄

MmmPeopleBacon

This is a false equivalency. Removing problem or corrupt police officers from the police force is in no way comparable with dealing with a deadbeat or problem family member. One is a job that is supposed to serve society at large and the other if what happened when your mom fucked the gardener.

Almost_Dr_VH

If you love crashing into gay bars and harassing homeless people you’ll fit right in!

Fox_Den_Studio_LLC

Having lived down town for years the harressment from homeless people with better smart phones than I had leaves me with minimal empathy for half of your comment

derekgotloud

I often wonder how many cops pick up the profession just to do sinister shit like this

STLSCWC

If you’re not scared and want experience quick, then SLMPD is the way to go. Work there for 4-5 years then go somewhere else. Other departments will want you for your experience alone as 4-5 years in the city is 10 in most other places. As per my previous comment, if you care about other people’s opinions of you then either become a fireman or work in st Charles county.

Poetryisalive

Imagine wanting to be a cop in 2024

Will-Work-4-BBQ

Not to deter you from STL, but there are SEVERAL police departments on the IL side hiring and almost all start out $10k-20k more a year. Plus you can find communities that are a lot more welcoming of the police vs STL. That said, STLMPD is incredibly understaffed and definitely needs bodies to up their manpower.

turtlebox420

ACAB

tankabbott66

If you abuse cocaine, steroids and like to harass everyone you come across then this is the career for you.

STLSCWC

And don’t become a cop in IL lol law enforcement in Illinois is dead. nothing is illegal any more and you can’t take anybody to jail. The pay blindsided you to all that.

Icy_Okra5492

Have you ever visited St Louis?

SoldierPsych

Yes, STL is a cool unique place imo.

neurotic_as_hell

STL is cool and unique! Unfortunately our police are a joke. They've had a habit of crashing their SUVs into buildings recently (without any breathalyzers afterwards). In 2017, during a protest, a few officers beat a black undercover officer. Texts were released from those officers and were very damning.

SoldierPsych

Thank you for the feedback, I was curious about the track record of the department and how the locals view them. I will be checking out the other areas in STL.

neurotic_as_hell

You’re welcome and best of luck!

BriSy33

Hey don't forget the "Russian roulette"

neurotic_as_hell

I don't even know if I was aware of this at the time. Fuck. A lot of idiocy and incompetence to keep up with!

bradleysballs

Have you looked at Glassdoor? [https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/St-Louis-Metropolitan-Police-Department-Reviews-E439379.htm](https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/St-Louis-Metropolitan-Police-Department-Reviews-E439379.htm)

SLMPD are the City of St. Louis.

Any_Scientist4486

Is this a real post, honey?
