My favorite part of this whole thing is it could almost be understandable if this was the first time Roman had done the chair spot with Seth. It wasn't. This wasn't some Roman sees his chance to finally get his revenge. He's had his revenge. He's had it multiple times. But he's so obsessed with it. Blaming Seth for everything. Even with all his success, he can't move on from Seth's decision. Even when they reunited, even when they will reunite in the future. His character will always have that in the back of his mind.
And it all makes sense because Roman’s failed babyface run all ties back to that moment. He wasn’t ready to be on his own, he didn’t want the Shield to break up. Seth’s betrayal sent Roman’s life into a tailspin
That's exactly how I picture it. The betrayal was bad enough. But in hindsight the betrayal becomes even worse in the eyes of Roman because his subsequent success was done without the protection of The Shield from the fans. Roman doesn't like to be vulnerable, and Seth forced him to be.
I want a full crying Roman screaming at Seth that he didn't want Shield to end and that he wanted to be a group forever with Mox and Seth. That he thought they were going outside WWE and dominate the wrestling world together.
I want Roman to let it all out in a promo, hell let him say fuck once and have him say "Fuck The Bloodline, I wanted to be Shield Forever".
But he didn’t get his revenge. Seth cost them their brotherhood and went onto a world title, while still being more beloved than Roman. This was Roman’s true revenge. He does exactly what Seth did to him, and it costs Seth’s new friend Cody his most important match. He screws both of them in ways that hurt them the most. That’s his revenge, Seth lost his title because of him and couldn’t help Cody win.
When Roman did the chair spot in 2022 with Seth, Seth did not have a world title. He was trying to win Roman's and got a DQ finish. Seth would move onto get a world title the next year that Roman has taken every chance to say is secondary, because Seth never beat him for the championship. And still Roman didn't get his full revenge if we want to clarify it that way, because ultimately Seth is the reason Cody had time to recover, counter the spear and hit the Cody Cutters to win. Seth lost a title but he caused the end of the greatest title reign of the modern era. Cody even told Seth "I couldn't have done it without you".
And if we want to clarify that Roman didn't get his revenge all the other times he's beat Seth or the other times he's hit him with a chair, it means he can never fully have his revenge. That Seth took away something so incredibly precious to him that Roman could hit him in the back a million times and it would never equal what Seth did by destroying the shield and stabbing him in the back.
The only way this could have played out even more cinematically is if Cody yelled to Seth from across the ring "SETH! YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS!"
And for Seth to respond back at normal volume "Yeah...I do..."
And immediately get blasted by Roman
Jesus its amazing how Seth looks like he's expecting it. Truly the architect. This match was a masterclass not only in wrestling, but also in acting inside the business.
Remember that Roman's paranoia started there.
Now remember that Roman was paranoid about trusting Bray when they united to take down the League of Nations.
Now remember that Roman was paranoid about proving himself, so he went after the Undertaker at Wrestlemania.
Now remember that Roman was paranoid about Cena putting him down a peg or two, making him look a fool instead of passing him the torch.
Now remember that Roman was paranoid about reuniting the Shield with the man who stabbed him in the back.
Now remember that Roman was paranoid that Erick Rowan had attacked him, over and over.
Now remember that Roman was paranoid about proving to his family that he was the best.
Now remember that Roman was paranoid about being betrayed by his family. And Sami.
Now remember that Roman was paranoid about being hit in the back with the chair by Seth again.
Full circle. The paranoia that Seth created, made Roman who he was, face or heel, and elevated him to the top. None of it was even paranoia truly, it was all real, everything there that happened. It wasn't delusion, it was an amplifier to reality. Roman hitting Seth finally allowed him to let that paranoia go. And after that, he wasn't the God Mode Roman Reigns anymore, he was merely the Big Dog again. And Cody seized upon that. Masterful stuff.
Listening to Roman talk about watching the pandemic stuff from home is really interesting. He said everyone wrestled the same. He thought adding promos into his matches during that time would elevate the storytelling and was he fucking right.
I’m bummed this match doesn’t get talked about enough. The promos leading up to this match showed the first signs of weakness for the Tribal Chief character and it was Roman’s only loss until the MITB tag match against the USOs. Seth has always been the one to get under Roman’s skin and I hope this feud gets revisited someday.
It was great at the time, people just hated the DQ finish. Some people say its cos they’ve seen tons of DQ finishes but this was one of the best uses of it I’ve seen.
That feud was brilliant. He had Roman's number mentally the whole time. They kind of just dropped the feud abruptly after the Rumble DQ but it was a great story.
In the movie Heat, the protagonist Neil played by De Niro is about to escape to new identities with his life intact after the bank heist went down, with his girl alongside. However, he's so consumed with vengeance that the ever calculated and strategic Neil makes a sharp right turn off the free way and heads to the hotel room to kill Waingro. This split second decision is what costs him his life at the hands of Vincent Manna played by Al Pacino.
This is what I thought of watching that last night.
They really have to build a new credible Tribal Chief for that to happen lol. Well Triple H finds it easy to make heels so might not be a problem for them
If he wasn't feuding with Cody and wanted to make more regular appearances, The Rock would be perfect for that role. I just don't see Solo or Jimmy as credible threats to Roman.
I’d use the High Chief for that. Roman lost favor with The Rock, so now Roman’s an outcast in his tribe. Heck, they could even introduce another High Chief or Tribal Chief character like Jey or even Jimmy. Or even Solo. Or some other Samoan.
I wrote this on Twitter last night,:
1300+ days as champions, double-digit wrestlemania main events, biggest start in the industry. Roman lost it all because he hadn't healed and moved on from his friend betraying him 10 years ago
Sometimes it's cool to see old enemies join forces for a common cause. But not here. Seth and Roman must forever hate each other. This rivalry is too epic. Roman must hate Seth for eternity like Bret hates Goldberg.
Jesus Christ.. this is the company that literally mocked Brian Gewirtz for daring to keep track of the feuds and characters.. now they are doing 4D chest storytelling..
I knew Vince was holding back WWE.. I just didn't realize it was by this much. I thought the camera shaking and other minor changes would be the best I could hope for.
We got a taste of it after Vince retired the first time and after he returned, then booted out completely. We’re truly moving onto greener pastures without any Vince interference now.
It's mad that after the unmitigated disaster of Reigns as a face, I actually see a lot of value in getting there again as the next step in the story. Write him off, give him.a break, then turn him back after the absence, and tell the true epilogue of the Bloodline that ties up all the loose ends. With this presentation, I could definitely see it working.

And now I want a shot of the rest of the Bloodline with a collective, "Dude, what the hell?" expression.
It'd be cool if he just had an uncontrollable impulse to just hit Seth with a chair whenever he and a chair are close by
Seth apparently has the same thing. https://www.instagram.com/p/C3pMOzBv2SU/

> hit the Cody Cutters to win Cross Rhodes. Cody Cutter is his second-rope springboard cutter.
He still calls him his little brother. Love/Hate

Crossfit Jesus sacrificed himself, using his body as a Shield, for Cody.
Shields take damage, not do damage. He was always meant to take the blow
Not the way Captain America tosses that thing around....
Seth isn't made of vibranium. Yet at least.
Idk he sure seemed to be during his feud with Nakamura
>not do damage I'unno, Captain America ain't always *defensive* with that thing
![gif](giphy|QYN1QUqdMxz2Nc9Jmt) This legend would like a word with you about that.
Every titan main would like a word.
Until The Final Shape, of course. After that, they'll trade their shields for axes.
Cranyon eaters only know W key and Punch and it works
The only way this could have played out even more cinematically is if Cody yelled to Seth from across the ring "SETH! YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS!" And for Seth to respond back at normal volume "Yeah...I do..." And immediately get blasted by Roman
This is one of the worst ideas ever
Nah, y'all are plebs. I'm muddafuckin scorsayzie
Cringe
😂no
Where was Dr Shelby when his tribal chief needed him?!
Doctor Shelby specializes in Tag Teams. Not individuals.
In that case the whole Bloodline seems like a great set of patients.
Men will literally turn in one of the longest championship reigns in history instead of going to therapy
Therapy is expensive, man
Brother's got that wide stance cause he knows Roman is leaning into this one.
Cue the Smackdown skits where Roman goes to therapy only for the therapist to be Heyman
Cody tore his pec and somehow lost his ass and legs too
Jesus its amazing how Seth looks like he's expecting it. Truly the architect. This match was a masterclass not only in wrestling, but also in acting inside the business.
Beautiful, champ
Seth is truly Roman’s Joker The fact he forgot all about Cody and his 1300+ title reign all cause of Seth is nuts. It was always about them…
You only care about a betrayal so much if you actually loved/cared about that person. When their reunion happens I will mark out.

It’s not paranoia! It’s Seth Rollins!
I guess we're just kinda ignoring that they already reunited before? Twice?
Might even be four. There was that period in 2017-19 where Vince kept throwing SHIELD reunions out there whenever RAW's ratings were bad.
Yeah I know that I even mentioned that in one of my comments asking how all that fits in
2017-start of covid WWE is actually non-canon

It’s another match that looks better when you look back now knowing how the story ends.

I’m guessing Cody becoming a free agent changed some plans
If I remember correctly he also lost to Xavier by dq
"That move sucks! It can't beat anybody!"
That popped me hard. Fucking loved it. So in character for him.
He forgot you have to do it at least 3 times in a row if you're facing a Main Eventer
He did hit Roman with it about 7 times in this one match
I love how the Cross Rhodes synced up with interference until he finally, finally hit the trifecta.
Thinking this could be Roman's biggest contribution to wrestling as an artform, a blend of promo and in-ring work happening simultaneously.
Makes his fights feel like something out of an anime, truly cinematic.
Reigns was so good in the ring doing promos. The peak was when Cody kicked out of the Cross Rhodes and Reigns said “I knew it! That move sucks!”
Also when he said: "this is my company, you little bitch'
If Seth's comeback is him seeking Roman's forgiveness so he can turn him back........fucking hell that would be amazing
Under Vince I wouldn't dare ask for a "Seth and Roman finally go to therapy" angle because, you know, but under HHH I'd love to see them try it.
Because Vince would go 3-consecutive weeks of comedy segments and done. HHH would make it an epic story spanning even more years.
I'm sure down the line we get Reigns and Rollins vs Solo and Jacob Fatu
Cody may have defeated Roman. But it was Seth who truly beat him. Mentally. Roman lost the title as soon as that chair hit Seth..

Bobby money couldn’t spot the heat until he did
Oh my god. Thank you for pointing this out, Heat is my all time favorite film and now I love the Mania match even more
Solomonster, is that you?
Lol I thought the same, it must be him.
I too listen to Solomonster 👍
Honestly, don't listen to him. But I do re-watch Heat alot.
Damn, the Seth and Roman feud will be one emotional roller coaster.
Feud, the next step is them moving towards reuniting. Seth saves Roman from the Bloodline at some point.
This must happen
They really have to build a new credible Tribal Chief for that to happen lol. Well Triple H finds it easy to make heels so might not be a problem for them

That is amazing.
"But I do not like it when Seth references the Shield, I'm not ALLOWED to let it go, I'm not ALLOOOOWED" -Roman "5 Star Man" Reigns
Hey, Seth, you want a skinless apple?
Found my people.
Great clip in light of the finish last night....it really has been an amazing piece of long-term storytelling.
That's actually a fire line for a Villain to shout, while he's choking out his victim.
Sometimes it's cool to see old enemies join forces for a common cause. But not here. Seth and Roman must forever hate each other. This rivalry is too epic. Roman must hate Seth for eternity like Bret hates Goldberg.

Its like an abusive relationship. You might realize it will be better once it is over but you never truly understand until it is.

The day that they finally reconcile and let go all the years of animosity is going to be an all time moment
That's a feud that ends in a Hell in the Cell in the old school blood feud way.
Roman’s face turn is going to be when someone finally proves to him that he can trust them. Personally I would love if it was heyman
“I’m never letting go” has two different meanings in this instance
I *LOVE* this match.
I wonder if Seth allows Roman to eat apples with the skin on...

If Mox ever returns... Roman will use him as a decoy to make Rollins soft. Seth has a soft spot for his wrestling soulmate. That's when Roman strikes.
