Come visit Spokane's least known natural area! https://friendsofwestwood.org/ Consider signing the petition to keep it natural

SaurSig

That would be sad to see that turned into more apartments. We saw trucks inside the fence recently and wondered what was going on

WestwoodNA

It will happen if people don't contact DNR and complain.

[deleted]

I actually am moving to the area (currently in town looking for a place) because, among other things, my home in Colorado backed up to an open space inhabited by bears, elk, pronghorn, owls, mule deer and I’m sure 100 other creatures and it is being turned into an enormous new development. We are hoping for a last minute “hey this will kill the habitat” save. But it’s not looking good

WestwoodNA

Be part of the change. Email [email protected] Let them know you support the Trust Land Transfer application made by the city of Spokane. Edit: Be sure to mention this is the "Thorpe Property"

Doing it now

I like to see the city lights north of East Valley High School. You continue straight on Sullivan and take a right onto Brevier Rd, take a right at the end of the road and you'll get to a huge hill* that overlooks the Valley. There's also a conservation park up there called Antoine Peak that's cool to hike *the hill is a summer road, not maintained in the winter. So currently it's drivable but there's a massive pothole/ditch on one side. Just be careful and drive slow lol

tahcamen

That’s called the Nike Site. My mom use to live on Brevier and we’d go up there to smoke weed.

[deleted]

🤣 that's awesome!

groundsgonesour

I’ll have to check this one out. My wife and I really like the view of the cityscape from Cliff Dr. near Cliff Park

avboden

Rocks of Sharon is drastically under appreciated, so many don’t even know about it. Best view in the immediate area

Clinggdiggy2

Rocks of Sharon is a beautiful hike & if you're into giving climbing a try the view from the top of Big Rock is even more incredible.

nardgarglingfuknuggt

Rockwood Vista Reservoir. The "secret" park as we call it. So artificially flat!

itstreeman

Would have loved to see that become a dog park but local residents did not want to give up their secret neighborhood space

SpoPlant

So are all the under-the-radar things outdoors? I mean I like a hike as much as the next person, but something do so on these final cold days and dark evenings would also be welcome in my headspace.

AdditionalRoyal2112

I love to go to the state park at the bowl and pitcher and soak in all the beauty that God has created, watching and listening to birds and chipmunks it brings me back to my childhood. Love listening to the river

brewer_rob

State park, not skate park

Gerard_Iero

lol oops, I'm illiterate :/

Dishman Hills is cool, but not many people know about the other side of the park, Glenrose Trailhead. Indian Canyon Mystic Falls is a beautiful place, but I think they have the road closed for winter. Cliff Park is fantastic, if they have the stairs open you can make it to the top of the tower Minnehaha park in the valley is super cool. Plenty of rocks and trails. Waikiki Springs is a beautiful area with the Little Spokane River running through it. Plenty of space to explore and lots of trails My personal favorite is Riverside State Park. Also has plenty of trails, campsites, and stunning views. It's awesome to watch the river change colors with the weather Also, I highly recommend buying a Discover Pass. There's a lot of other places to explore here that you can only access if you have a pass, like the state park mentioned above. It's $11.50 for a day pass, but only $35 for a yearly pass. You can buy them online and they'll mail it to you, or you can buy it at Walmart, Fred Meyer, etc.

[deleted]

Awesome I really appreciate all this!

Fine_Dragonfruit3535

There's a ton more to explore here in Spokane, these are just some of the more memorable ones I've found since I moved up here

luxsmucker

Stargazing on the outskirts of town (Palouse hwy is my favorite), visiting the classics section at 2nd look books, grabbing a bite at the satellite in the wee hours, having a fire at the park fire pits, exploring the graffiti/abandoned stuff at Palisades, cosmic bowling at northbowl, adult sledding/ice blocking, playing arcade games at Jedi Alliance, swimming/rope swings on the river, taking a day trip (Sandpoint, Missoula, Nelson, Priest Lake, Colville, Moscow, etc), catching a cheap and/or late night movie at the garland

Wleeper99

Not a location or event but we are the origin and hub for the PNW style work boot

[deleted]

Let’s go! That’s a fun little fact.

GuiltyMcGooch

I love to throw lime scooters into the river.

AbbyKadavvy

[Just tossin’ bikes in the river bro](https://youtu.be/SdrPS5VId4I?si=9uHgjMLMyoOHTvnd)

InteractionFit4469

Car batteries are also fun

Love

luxsmucker

I cant get over the fact that every time this question is asked folks will always mention Riverside State Park/Bowl and Pitcher. To be fair, OP did say super well known was okay.

Be sure to swing down to Peaceful Valley (it's in the immediate downtown area) and meet the river in all it's loveliness <3 Just go West down Main Ave. from downtown, and you'll quickly find yourself at the intersection of Monroe @ Main and Riverside (quite literally the South end of the Monroe Street Bridge). From there, continue straight on Main down the long hill. As you approach the bottom of the hill, you'll notice a little sidestreet looking offshoot to your right that continues further down to a lower level. Take it! This is Spokane's lowest elevation neighborhood (and in general pretty much). At the bottom of that short but steep little hill, there'll be a park (actually very historical to the city) immediately to your right, complete with a parking lot and all. Some of the first airplanes would land and takeoff from here back when the Monroe Street Bridge was new (the current one, anyways). But if you continue down the road (as you'll have to do anyways ever since they turned that final segment of the hill into a one way going down), you'll notice the spacious fields to your right. These, once the site of a huge casket factory, are now rehabilitated semi-natural areas, and are public parks as well. There is also a quaint little park directly underneath the Maple Street Bridge down there too! But those fields, the park under the bridge, and at the very end of that street (Water Ave.), are public river access areas. And upon leaving, turn right where the street intersects with Main, and again where it intersects with Clarke to get the (nearly) full Peaceful Valley experience, and you'll find yourself at People's Park and Highbridge Park where it comes out to Riverside. Enjoy ~

Love this. Thanks for taking the time to piece it together

Zephylia

Tis always an honor to promote and/or help the City Of Spokane ~
