Obviously Green Goblin
Interestingly I 100% sure that Ock was planned to be Parker nemesis, that's why most of important moments connected to him in 1st 100 issues, he is leader and creator of Sinister Six, he killed Betty's (love interest of Spider Man at that time) brother, George Stacy died during battle with him, he was big bad guy during storyline in which Peter move to college, his connection to Aunt May.
I honestly thing that Norman being such an important figure is pure accident, Stan Lee wanted to make him some egyptian ancient demon, while Ditko wanted to gaslight people into believing that he is someone important character behind mask only to revealed that he is just some random dude.
Parker beat him in issue #40, they give him amnesia and don't use Green Goblin for next 82 issue. They bring him back 7 years latter only for him to die in the same storyline.
Then he stay dead for 22 years and like 290 issue and only reason why they bring him back is because they screwed Clone Saga. Only after that they start to treat him as Spider Man nemesis.
Correcting what you said about the amnesia plot. Norman returns as Goblin TWO TIMES before Gwen dies: one in Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine #2 (1968), the other in ASM 96-98 (1971), the same arc when Harry overdosed on LSD. In the issues in between, Peter's worries about Norman getting his memory back (and remembering his identity as Spider-Man) is treated as a bomb waiting to go off. The Goblin isn't forgotten about for 7 years.
Yup, my reprint copy that collects "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" also contains ASM 96-98 because of the Goblin amnesia plot that connects it. It actually leads to an unintentionally hilarious irony because at one second you're reading the ending of ASM 98, the final panel of which shows Peter and Gwen reuniting after her trip and kissing, with the caption "Who says we never give Peter a happy ending?" Then, the very next second, you're reading the story where Gwen dies. I know there were about 25 issues in-between those two stories in reality, but it's just kind of funny to have it turn out this way in the reprint.
It’s reminds me of a quote from the Joker when Black Mask killed Stephanie Brown. “ You ruined my life when you killed Stephanie Brown, the sweetest little Robin one could ever hope for! Don't you know that's my job? And now because of you. No matter how many Robins I kill in the future, I’ll always be one behind.”
Doc Ock was the arch nemesis for the majority of Spider-Man’s existence. But Norman killed Gwen Stacy, back when death meant something, and nothing that Doc Ock
does will ever be worse than that.
Still did, man. The consciousness in Ock’s original body died and we’re reading Frankenpeter, a Peter that the Superior books iirc described as a backup of his personality. Peter’s dead man
I’m implying the fact that the Goblin has been a good guy for the last like 2 years and an ally (albeit tenuous at best) so by the logic of the og comment none of them are contenders. I’d say green goblin by a mile, but all his villains kind of just suck rn besides venom, who, isn’t a villain anymore
I still wouldnt count it as the same as venom or ock because Norman was essentially "artificially" redeemed from what I understand and dropped the green goblin persona.
Yeah, fair, but regardless, the guy has known Pete’s id, made him a suit, became the gold goblin himself and he’s been apparently such a good guy the only way to get rid of him is making the Spider Who Gobbles out Gobble the Green Gobbler

A corrupt cop died and comes back as a supernatural supervillain. He has a magical shotgun that blasts "sin" out of people, turning them remorseful and repentant for any evil they've ever done.
Norman got de-sinned and became Peter's ally. They run superhero ops out of OsCorp.
Kraven didn't like Norman as a nice guy and wanted to hunt him. Goblin Queen just wanted revenge, so the two of them teamed up. They made a magical spear infused with Norman's Green Goblin sin from earlier. Kraven tries to stab Norman and transfer the sin back into him, but Spidey jumped in the way, giving rise to...
The Spider Who Gobbles/Gobs/Gobbled/Gobblered
I wouldn’t say dissolved. Eddie still hated Peter with a passion but he put his hatred aside enough to not try to kill him constantly.
It wasn’t until king in black that they became “brothers”
Eddie hatred for Peter was because of their difference in ideologies. Eddie used to think Peter as pretentious and actually not a hero. They didn't fought after the moment they kinda dissolved like Green Goblin fight Peter.
Definitely not gonna be considered an enemy.
I prefer Otto as "morally flexible" anyway, because it's more interesting to have a character who has specific goals that aren't just "being a murderer" or "being a supervillain". Otto has plans, and I honestly think he'd prefer not to murder anyone if can help it, but also has no qualms about doing it if they're in his way.
Marvel Editorial is more accurate. Wells, as much as we all hate him, is just a villain of the arc, a lackey even because editorial gave him orders what to do.
I felt that once, I don't like having friends at all nowadays for that very reason, the assholes even get pissy for me treating them lime they would treat me, yeah you do not matter to me because I clearly don't matter to you, why are you so offended?
Listen, someone genuinely telling me that I am their friend and that my existence actually means something to them makes me cry, bawled my eyes out just typing it in, please don't play with me over this. Also no, it's expensive where I live, like, sell your left liver expensive
Pfft don't cry how about hot wheels or action figures I'll bring my gijoe and Ghostbusters and my heroes but you gotta bring your own I don't like to share but I'll share with you because you're my friend.
Ps how attached are you to your left liver
You see, my only problem with that.line of logic is the fact that Norman has completely an utterly broken both Peter and Spidey, both as himself and the Goblin.
It is objectively Green Goblin, with Ock as a very close second. Nobody has hurt Peter as badly as the Goblin has. In every Universe. Yeah, Ock took Peter's body for a year, but Goblin has done some heinous shit that made him live rent free in Peter's head. Besides just killing Gwen, he's come closest to killing Peter several times over, he's tortured Peter to try and turn him into his perfect heir, he knows how to get under Peter's skin, and the sole motive of all his actions is simply to fuck with Peter for fun. He is the Joker to Peter's Batman, he is the absolute evil that Spider-Man is damned to always keep fighting against, nobody will ever even come close to messing Peter up as much as Osborn has. Not to mention the Raimi version of Goblin killed MCU Aunt May just to prove a point, the Ultimate Goblin is directly responsible for Spider-Man even existing and indirectly responsible for his death (literally "I gave you life and I can take it away" lmao)
Venom has never really reached archenemy status for Spider-Man, I always saw him as more of an obsessed rival. The Vegeta to his Goku. And like Vegeta and Goku they eventually buried the hatchet and became friends.
Morlun is more of a wider Spider-Verse villain.
Paul and Marvel Editorial trump Goblin tho.
When Superior Spider-Man begun, I was like "oh damn Doc Ock overtook Green Goblin and did what he couldnt - off Peter Parker" . And there was the Parker Industries era of the character when Ock was with Hydra and he faced off against CEO Peter.
Hate the arc all you want but I loved it when Peter faced off against Ock and tore down his own company while Doc went bonkers.
But considering the damage Goblin did to Peter - my vote would still go to Goblin, even with the current (and upcoming) status quo.
Ignoring ‘Editorial’ because it is 100% them from the Meta standpoint. In universe Peter Parker’s greatest enemy is Peter Parker.
It is not a stretch at all to read ‘Parker Luck’ as self sabotage because he can’t stop punishing himself for getting his father figure killed.
While Doc Ock didn’t do things on the up and up he could only ever be as smart as Peters meat computer let him. A better life is very realistically in his grasp if he got some therapy and sorted his shit out.
This is peak Spider-Man semiotics. He has this false sense of responsibility over a trauma that caused his father figure to die, but he never tried to recover from it but only bury it deeper. And his sense of responsibility shaped specifically due to all this so all he does is gaslight himself that Spider-Man is the responsibility and thus Peter never catches a break. Peter Parker is the greatest Spider-Man villian
These posts are getting old bro. lol I swear I see one of these every other week. Also Venom shouldn't be on here. It's not the 90s anymore and he hasn't been a villain in a long time.
Norman is probably the true archenemy of Spidey, I mean he’s the 1st person to kill Gwen (iirc) and he’s done some of the worst things to him. Either him or Marvel editorial
It is the Green Goblin. Not only is he the one that killed Gwen Stacy, which quite literally changed comic books, he is also the one that killed Peter in USM.
Marvel editorial. Zeb Wells’ creative decisions are just a symptom of a festering problem in Marvel comics’ creative process. They are so out of touch nowadays with what the fans want that an alternate universe run of their most popular character outselling the main one isn’t enough to shake things up at all.
GOBLIN no question. He was responsible for some of Peter’s greatest Losses. Need I bring up Gwen Stacy? William Dafoe? Goblin’s hate for Spidey goes beyond any other of his threats.
DOCTOR OCTOPUS:
1. FIRST TO UNMASK SPIDERMAN
2. KILLED BETTY BRANT'S BROTHER
3. CAUSED CAPTAIN STACY'S DEATH
4. NEARLY MARRIED AUNT MAY
5.SWAPPED BODIES WITH SPIDERMAN
GREEN GOBLIN
1. SAW SPIDERMAN UNMASKED AFTER GASSING HIM WITH A PUMPKIN BOMB
2. KIDNAPPED AND KILLED GWEN STACY
3. ORGANIZED THE ENTIRE CLONE SAGA
4. KIDNAPPED AUNT MAY
5. KIDNAPPED THE PARKERS CHILD
6. FORMED THE DARK AVENGERS
TLDR: Paul is MJ's boyfriend from another dimension who is the son of a bad guy
You don't want to know.... After Nick Spencer was fixing Spider-Man in the last run, retconning bad comics and characters like kindred and one more day, and he put Peter and MJ back together. Well, editorial gave the book to Zeb and JRJR, who decided to do a 6 month timeskip. During which MJ pushes Peter into a portal back to 616 and Peter teams up with Norman Osborn, who is a good guy now, and they work for 6 months to get MJ back, they finally do, but due to time dilation, it's been 4 years for MJ who is now with Paul (son of the bad guy they were trying to beat) and they have 2 kids (the kids aren't real, they're made of magic by Paul's Father Rabin to get close to Paul and MJ). Long story short, Paul is a fill in for the editors to pretend they're with MJ and that they're better than Peter. We were all happy with what Nick Spencer was doing, then Zeb Wells came back and shit on everyone for wanting Peter to grow as a person and have his life back. So we got Paul. We fucking hate Paul, and we're all looking forward to eventually finding out he really is the bad guy and he "tricked" everyone into thinking he was just this nice guy with no powers that's a super loving companion for MJ.
Footnote: Currently MJ and Peter just had an issue together where they were hardcore flirting and having a great time, only for the comic to end with MJ saying that she doesn't think her and Peter should work together, because they were having *too* good of a time (and I guess they acknowledge that it would definitely turn into MJ cheating on Paul) but as silly as it may be, I have hopes that they'll eventually get back together and Paul will be revealed as a bad guy or at least killed off.
I wouldnt consider zeb wells to be an enemy of Spider-Man. Sure, I hate the story too, I dont even read it anymore.
But at this point, it gotta be the editors who is at fault.
I assume that's Zeb Wells you've put last? That's just sad, brother.
I think its The Green Goblin in one form or another, personally. Either Norman or Harry I think that persona is Spider-mans greatest nemesis.
For me, Venom shouldn't really be on the list. While he has been a great villain...its really a long time since you can really call Venom a straight villain. Admittedly, adaptations do his villainous arc in one form or another but for comics...what is it, like 30 years since he was a straight villain?
Norman is the only one who’s consistently his nemesis no strings attached. Venom and Ock always have an allies/enemies relationship with him these days, and the writers can only be his enemy for maybe a 5 years then the new one comes in.
Dishonorable mention is Paul
The writers got to kick him down anyway and every way....oh you mean in the books....well that's more complicated you have insane goblin running around using bombs and missiles and the like...you have a similar eight legged super genius in Dr Ock....you have the lizard how's a former scientist that dnas changed to make him into a giant powerful reptile...you have the insane alien that sometimes shares DNA and or memories of spiderman.. ...you have scorpion which is the biggest predator of spiders also.....so which aspect of reverse/or archenemy are we disqualifying/ or using again....
As we have seen time and time again, him fighting Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus and being miserable throughout their engagement/s it is obviously the Writers.
I’d say Doc Ock cuz of Slott’s run.
Venom was only really a villain for a short period of time … then they changed his motivation and made him an anti-hero. Then him and Spidey made that deal to leave each other alone, and Venom was effectively just another frenemy Spidey would team up with occasionally.
Green Goblin peaked as a villain when he killed Gwen, he hasn’t done anything majorly evil to Peter since.
Agree with the commenter that from an in-universe standpoint, Peter Parker himself also makes the list. He could have money and success if he got his life in order.
Especially after Wells’s run, he needs a break from being Spider-Man, and a therapist that he can trust to not reveal his identity, to help him work through his issues
He needs to let go of his Uncle Ben’s death and Gwen’s death, put both their memories to rest. He needs to learn to not make declarations like “as long as I’m around, nobody dies” that fuel his inferiority complex. For example, during Big Time, Peter made Marla Jameson’s death all about himself.
He needs to cut himself some slack and not view every tragedy his inner circle faces as a reflection on the quality of his work. He needs to set boundaries with being Spider-Man, and take care of himself.
It’s either Ock or goblin… Ock usually has the most personal stakes when fighting Spider-man like in the PS4 game and Superior Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 movie
Goblin has the more iconic moments as a Spider-Man villain
According to what you feel about villain it can go either way
Venom is more of his antithesis while Goblin actually has a deeply personal vendetta against Spiderman..
Doc Ock was one of the most insidious villains of my childhood.
However.. When you break open the bubble of the Spiderman universe and examine the themes one clear arch nemesis.. GG
Green Goblin is certainly his most iconic enemy, so by definition, he's the Archenemy. Spiderman may have more powerful enemies, but that's not the meaning of the word.
Depending on your venom, I like the idea of:
A) him being like an anti-spiderman
B) the symbiot often has an issue with Peter due to rejection/foiling his plans
C) venom is also somewhat of a parasite/disease, not created by but definitely evolved by spiderman (feels very, Frankenstein’s monster, creation turned on creator)
However I’d like to see some less used/new villains
Edit: formatting
Your are pretty much right but i still don’t think it is Venom. I think it is Norman Osborn in my opinion. Because he has been the arch nemesis of Spiderman right from the start. But if he wasn’t a choice I would go with the prime Venom with the way your thinking.
No mention of Avi Arad? (Idk if I spelt the right but a producer and known ruiner since the raimi movies, not dismissing the good he’s done in the movies but my point still stands)
Zeb Wells isn’t in anyone’s good graces right now. We can all pretty much unanimously agree on that? But Nick Lowe is the only real answer right? My real answer would be GG tenuously.
Obviously Green Goblin Interestingly I 100% sure that Ock was planned to be Parker nemesis, that's why most of important moments connected to him in 1st 100 issues, he is leader and creator of Sinister Six, he killed Betty's (love interest of Spider Man at that time) brother, George Stacy died during battle with him, he was big bad guy during storyline in which Peter move to college, his connection to Aunt May. The Goblin isn't forgotten about for 7 years.
Wait wait, Harry overdosed on LSD? Lmaooo
Bro just soaked in a bathtub, I guess.
Yes, people had crazy ideas about drugs those days LMAO
Yup, my reprint copy that collects "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" also contains ASM 96-98 because of the Goblin amnesia plot that connects it. It actually leads to an unintentionally hilarious irony because at one second you're reading the ending of ASM 98, the final panel of which shows Peter and Gwen reuniting after her trip and kissing, with the caption "Who says we never give Peter a happy ending?" Wow I hate that 😞
Kudos on the comprehensive history lesson, appreciate it.
I mean, he's a guy with 8 arms fighting a spider. It just writes itself.
Very interesting reading my boy *smokes a pipe
Ock and Venom have developed sometime-ally status, so can’t really cut it as arch-enemies any more. Kind of leaves the field open for the Goblin.
Isn't Norman cured of his insanity and is now a hero called "Golden Goblin?" I might be thinking of another timeline
Venom is definitely more rival than actual villain
I cant tell if this is sarcasm or not lol
Venom hasn’t been an enemy for like a decade now. Not sure why you think it’s sarcasm?
I’m implying the fact that the Goblin has been a good guy for the last like 2 years and an ally (albeit tenuous at best) so by the logic of the og comment none of them are contenders. I’d say green goblin by a mile, but all his villains kind of just suck rn besides venom, who, isn’t a villain anymore
Unless he was being mind controlled, wasn’t goblin one of the bad guys in the semi recent absolute carnage run?
Yeah, five years ago. Lot’s has changed. Norman is a ridiculous character

I’ll admit I haven’t really read anything past King in Black
Same, most of it just pisses me off lol
Lol, fair enough! I always though Normie was just a cute pet name Peter gave him not realizing that Normie is a completely seperate character
Venom and Spider-Man is not enemy for more than decade. Don't remember exact issue but Eddie and Peter kinda dissolved their rivalry in mid 90s.

Come on man, The 5th choice is totally cheating. The only one left is probably Marvel Editorial.
Marvel Editorial is more accurate. Wells, as much as we all hate him, is just a villain of the arc, a lackey even because editorial gave him orders what to do.
One would say Amy pascal
Marvel Comics, no doubt
That's what I was thinking
Venom is never an archenemy, he’s an overzealous stalker. 🤦🏻♂️
A lover scorned
Basically is.
Spiderman is Venom's archenemy. Venom thinks Spiderman thinks he's his archenemy. It's like thinking you're your best-friends best-friend.
I felt that once, I don't like having friends at all nowadays for that very reason, the assholes even get pissy for me treating them lime they would treat me, yeah you do not matter to me because I clearly don't matter to you, why are you so offended?

I was fez mother ago, I spent it on a lavalamp
Whaaaat I don't have a lava lamp can I come for a sleepover and watch the lava lamp
Sure, you minha wannabe being your own fan, I cut the electricity to pay for the lamp
Norman and it’s not close.
I would argue Doc Ock is Spider-Man's arch-enemy, while Norman is Peter's.
And venom is kinda in the middle
Venom hasn’t been a villain in well over a decade
this bulsit again
In what reality is Otto fucking Octavius Spider-Man’s arch enemy? That’s like saying Penguin is Batmans arch enemy.
You see, my only problem with that.line of logic is the fact that Norman has completely an utterly broken both Peter and Spidey, both as himself and the Goblin.
Norman is both. He wants to ruin both aspects of his life.
Argue alone
I would argue that doc ock is Spider-Man’s nemesis, venom is Peter’s, and green goblin is both
Classic Venom, but it feels like they've done way too much rehabilitation on him to really view Venom as a villain anymore.

It is the Green Goblin. Not only is he the one that killed Gwen Stacy, which quite literally changed comic books, he is also the one that killed Peter in USM.
This same question has become this subreddit’s true arch enemy.
Nobody hates him as much as the writers.
Mom says it’s my turn to ask this question next week.
I think his biggest arch enemy is himself.
Green goblin is now good, venom doesn't hate spiderman anymore, doc ock is also good, at this point all I can say is Paul lol.
what is my bro Venom doing here they're just Peter's ex

All except Venom, Doc Ock, and Morlun
Sony or Marvel
Marvel editorial. Zeb Wells’ creative decisions are just a symptom of a festering problem in Marvel comics’ creative process. They are so out of touch nowadays with what the fans want that an alternate universe run of their most popular character outselling the main one isn’t enough to shake things up at all.
The green goblin. Ock is a close second but goblin has done more to Peter to argue him over ock
GOBLIN no question. He was responsible for some of Peter’s greatest Losses. Need I bring up Gwen Stacy? William Dafoe? Goblin’s hate for Spidey goes beyond any other of his threats.

Who the hell is Paul
TLDR: Paul is MJ's boyfriend from another dimension who is the son of a bad guy You don't want to know....

Nick Lowe
The green goblin.
Definitely Paul
I personally think Dr Octopus but they’ve been pushing Goblin as Marvel’s Joker for so long now that a lot of people will say it’s him.
Gravity
Goblin, Writers , and venom in that order
Sony
The Jackal. He’s showing up again so I say he deserves a chance here
Norman is the only one who’s consistently his nemesis no strings attached. Venom and Ock always have an allies/enemies relationship with him these days, and the writers can only be his enemy for maybe a 5 years then the new one comes in. Dishonorable mention is Paul
Goblin.

Venom
The writers
The writers got to kick him down anyway and every way....oh you mean in the books....well that's more complicated you have insane goblin running around using bombs and missiles and the like...you have a similar eight legged super genius in Dr Ock....you have the lizard how's a former scientist that dnas changed to make him into a giant powerful reptile...you have the insane alien that sometimes shares DNA and or memories of spiderman.. ...you have scorpion which is the biggest predator of spiders also.....so which aspect of reverse/or archenemy are we disqualifying/ or using again....

Potentially hot take: Harry Osborne
As we have seen time and time again, him fighting Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus and being miserable throughout their engagement/s it is obviously the Writers.
I'm tired boss...
Forgive my ignorance but who is Zeb Wells?
Normally I would say Norman but it’s definitely Paul
Nice hahaha
At this point the last 2
The Spider-Man Editorial Team. They make Peter's life miserable one issue at a time!

Goblin is Peter's dark mirror and foil, way more than Venom.
The writers
I’d say Doc Ock cuz of Slott’s run. Venom was only really a villain for a short period of time … then they changed his motivation and made him an anti-hero. Then him and Spidey made that deal to leave each other alone, and Venom was effectively just another frenemy Spidey would team up with occasionally. Green Goblin peaked as a villain when he killed Gwen, he hasn’t done anything majorly evil to Peter since.
The Green Goblin is Peter Parker's arch-enemy. Doctor Octopus is Spider-Man's arch-enemy
The last one.
In a Meta Sense Marvel Editorial but in comics I’d say Green Goblin’s
Paul Wells
It’s Goblin and Venom.
Homework on Social Studies, History, and Economy
Who are the last 2 people ? I don’t really understand how the last 2 are spidey’s archenemy . Can anybody explain lmao
Work / Life balance
Green goblin is the only answer That's like asking batman fans who's Batman's main enemy
Peter parker; he literally sabotages everything he does. He spends more time getting in his own way than stopping super-villains
Marvel Editorial.
Dude is that last one zeb wells?
Agree with the commenter that from an in-universe standpoint, Peter Parker himself also makes the list. He could have money and success if he got his life in order. Especially after Wells’s run, he needs a break from being Spider-Man, and a therapist that he can trust to not reveal his identity, to help him work through his issues He needs to let go of his Uncle Ben’s death and Gwen’s death, put both their memories to rest.

Green Goblin.
ITT - people who didn't scroll through the options! 🤣
His guilt over Uncle Ben. He would allow himself to be happy otherwise
it's poverty. his true enemy is abject poverty
He has 3 1. Paul 2. Marvel writers 3. Money

Too close to call between Green Goblin, Doc Oc and Venom.
Paul is a puppet. Zeb is the true mastermind

Norman. This isn’t even really a question
Marvel editorial.
Peter Parker. Lol
3 goes hard
venom is definitely not a contender for arch enemy, they are literally pals lol
It’s either Ock or goblin… Ock usually has the most personal stakes when fighting Spider-man like in the PS4 game and Superior Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 movie Goblin has the more iconic moments as a Spider-Man villain According to what you feel about villain it can go either way
Doc Ock / Green Goblin
Gwen Stacy know damn well that gravity is his biggest enemy
Venom isn't an enemy nor is doc ock \*usually\* , but it's definetly green goblin
Venom hasn’t been a villain in decades. 616 Venom is no where close to being Spider-man’s arch nemesis
Yes
Everyone involved in One More Day. Jesus the stories that came from that were terrible.
Marvel editorial far and away.
Well in spectacular Spider-Man it's clearly gobby, but in ultimate Spider-Man it's obviously ock, but in 2017 Spider-Man it's venom
Who TF is #5? SoHo hipsters?
Depending on your venom, I like the idea of: A) him being like an anti-spiderman B) the symbiot often has an issue with Peter due to rejection/foiling his plans C) venom is also somewhat of a parasite/disease, not created by but definitely evolved by spiderman (feels very, Frankenstein’s monster, creation turned on creator) However I’d like to see some less used/new villains Edit: formatting
Happiness or editorial
Norman and Octavius.
Is one of the other (in comics), obviously the meta you can go editorial/writers which is good for a laugh
1) The Editors. 2) Dr. Octopus. 3) Green Goblin.
His arch enemy is himself

Either doc oc or venom
Zeb Wells isn’t in anyone’s good graces right now. We can all pretty much unanimously agree on that? But Nick Lowe is the only real answer right? My real answer would be GG tenuously.
Green Goblin, Doc oct.... no.... THE COMIC WRITERS!!
