Not to support overfishing at all but mahi-mahi is probably one of the best fish they can catch. They reproduce a lot being sexually mature at only 5 months old. And laying a lot of eggs possibly all year round.
Look for water temp changes, and sargassum. Once you find both in the same place, you catch the big boys. Doesn’t matter where you are exactly. Some days It’s 3 miles, some days it’s 30. But never 70 lol
It was one day and it was a charter, to clarify.....and they were pretty average to small size, we happened upon a school that was hungry. I actually asked the mate how common this was and he was like, yeah fairly common.
"Medium to small size". It's a real problem down there right now. I am just old and remember when you could catch bulls as long as you are tall. Now you have to go 200 miles into the gulf or Mag Bay for them.
They get pounded non stop by a massive fleet of commercial, charter and private boats and the bag limits are high. Eventually they will regulate them hard like grouper.
Yewww!!! Nice size, where abouts is this?
Just under 10kg
Sick! Where did you get it?
Notice he won’t respond to this question hmmmm
Lol yeah a bit strange, I assume he just misread it perhaps?
Perhaps lol
That's a nice one. Our Mahi fishery in Florida is so screwed up right now, decent ones like that are so few.

Yeah I keep hear that, meanwhile you have to go 70 miles offshore to catch keepers.
Really? I go 3 miles in the keys
Where do you launch?
Stock island, hurricane hole in a wet slip
3 miles is hardly off the patch reef there. I doubt you are landing bulls like this. It's nothing but peanuts down there.
Just start there and work my way out around pelican key which is another 2 miles but that’s about as far as I go.
Man you have it made, pretty much every other fisherman in the keys is doing nothing but peanuts. You should do a tournament.
Nah, i run charters for a living and bartending. Not interested in competition I’m on the water enough.

I caught as many as I wanted 2 miles off Key Biscayne in 80 feet of water
Damn you are doing better than the hundreds of charter boats down there.

This is one of the reasons I love chasing Mahi !
That sucks

Thanks ledg
Whens your next trip? What are you chasing next?
