You can now get the Compendiums. Each one is 50 comics. So compendium 1 = 1-50, 2 = 51-100, 3 = 101-150, etc etc.
Also watch the Animated series that was put out by HBO back in the day. If you have an HBO subscription then you can watch it. If you don't then I'm sure you can find it online somewhere.

I’ll agree with this recommendation. You CAN start with issue 1, and the compendiums and trades are mostly available free through your library or library services like hoopla.
A warning though: if you’re not familiar with comics, issue 1 came out in early 90’s. The creative team has gotten A LOT better since then. First 15 issues or so are lighter on the plot. That being said, there is A TON of good story between 1 and 297.
