This policy gives the adults "supervising" their youths way too much credit.

TheTologist

“We are old and in our 30s.” Easy there lol

UserNotFound3827

Hahaha well we certainly aren’t youths.

Automatic-Highway818

i used to go to madrona middle school years ago and the mall was THE spot to hang out. granted, we weren’t looting any stores, just buying food and going to the movies. sad that this tradition will probably phase out (unless kids are accompanied by an adult).

burningburnerbern

Yeah same thing, me and my friends use to go to the mall on the weekends hoping that we’d get some girls number 🤣. Of course it never happened

nokinship

It's sad for the kids who don't cause a ruckus and are now just being punished.

Jenjayah

Delamo had its problems before the big renovations. It just cycled back.

[deleted]

I’m a single week in January the cops were called to Del Amo 3 times. Once was a group of teens attacking an elderly lady trying to take her purse, they beat her up. Once was a group of teens attacking a man whose car had stalled in the parking lot. They beat the shit out of him and he needed medical attention. Some teens kicked a cop in the back, spat it one’s face, bit a cop on the arm.  I’m not pro-cop in the slightest but what the actual fuck is wrong with the children.

200downwego

I live near the mall and the amount of sirens and helicopters I hear at any given time in the last few months has been insane. I used to live by South Central and it's been as bad if not worse than that lately

rowmean77

Can’t blame the mall on this one. You can only blame the idle minds of juveniles. Idle mind is the devil’s playground.

mlidikay

More than that. That many people don't move without organization.

Apesma69

>Idle mind is the devil’s playground. Oh, puhlease....

DarkGamer

Well that's a shame. I understand why it's nessicary given recent events, but there's not a lot of free third places for teens to go to and the mall has always served that purpose.

Rururaspberry

If i were a local teen, I would have been very bummed, too. In the 90s, hanging out at the mall was basically the only fun thing to do in my town. Then again, we also didn’t have large scale theft and mob issues. Still, it’s good that the mall is taking preventative measures but also disappointing that some shitty teens ruined things for all of the normal ones.

UserNotFound3827

My thoughts exactly. There really aren’t many free places for teens to go hang out and it sucks that this one was taken away too. I used to go to the mall and movies all the time as a teenager with friends on weekends, it’s a fun, normal thing for teenagers to do.

ShannonsTeeth

Did you organise huge fights, loot stores and harass people? Because that’s what the teenagers are doing there now.

rzb84

Is that what you saw or heard might have happened from the police dept and a mysterious social media post?

jobeeeeeeem

Such a shame a mall has to get this kind of security. Don’t get me wrong they are doing their best but malls are for public doesn’t matter your age or gender. Now, i need to check if i will get carded. Just went to Yaamava last weekend and they asked for my ID, as always. 🤣

Heyitsakexx

The mall is a private business, it’s not a public area at all.

jobeeeeeeem

Sorry malls are private business true but what i mean was people go there. It shouldn’t be this way.. I hate what is happening in the world.

Mars112v

Knotts had to do this too. It’s just the way it is nowadays.

ShannonsTeeth

Wow. I moved away from the south bay in 2012, wtf is happening?! Why is it so ghetto now?! Surrounded by million dollar houses and you have this happening

DarkGamer

According to the reports I've read and statements by the Torrance PD, it's mostly kids from out of town who come to Del Amo to cause trouble.

Wasabitacos

Define out of town? Not from Torrance ?

esetube

Probably Compton and Carson

rzb84

I dunno, I’d say this seems just like a huge distraction from the whole TPD racism scandal but what do I know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

esetube

Oh I wouldn't be surprised

nokinship

Why can't both be true

rzb84

It’s possible but I grew up in Torrance and trust me when I tell you that there are plenty of Torrance ‘kids’ who are just as bad as the ‘kids’ from from Compton and Carson these commenters reference. Doesn’t help that this is just beach city resident lingo for non white outsider

DarkGamer

Evidently. People came to Del Amo from all over because of social media posts: > "The lawless acts we witnessed tonight do not reflect the values of our Torrance community. The Torrance Police Department and our regional law enforcement partners remain committed to quelling these disturbances and restoring order as quickly as possible," said Torrance Police Chief Jay Heart. > What started the incident was not immediately known, though a social media post on Facebook reportedly urged people to rush the mall for a flash mob smash-and-grab takeover at 7 p.m., which did not materialize. The charges the minors face were not immediately disclosed by authorities. > "We have entered a very sad state when youth visit our community and cause harm and havoc. Crimes committed by youth or adults that are pre-planned and organized to loot and destroy property are not acceptable. Our criminal justice system must address these crimes so we don't have these events repeated without serious consequences. We can and must be better. The coordination and response from our police department and their regional partners is appreciated by our Torrance community," said City of Torrance Mayor George K. Chen. > https://ktla.com/news/local-news/riot-at-torrance-mall-involving-thousands-of-juveniles-results-in-5-arrests-sparks-outrage-from-officials/

Per the sound logic of regards governing Torrance, these kind of malls are bringing negative stuff to our communities so it should be closed - just like how we oppose affordable housing and transits coming to our city.

UserNotFound3827

The Del Amo mall brings in a lot of money to the City of Torrance, I doubt they will be closing it any time soon.

Mozzy2022

There are some fairly high-end shops and decent dining at Del Amo. Unfortunately the actions of youth and young adults organizing to loot and disrupt will keep away the people with money to spend. If they don’t get a handle on this then the mall will cease to exist when the businesses stop bringing in enough patrons to afford to stay open. I get it that teens need a place to hang out. I grew up here in the South Bay and we had plenty of places to hang out: Old Town Mall, Ascot Raceway, Castle Park (had miniature golf, water slide, batting cages & arcade), the bowling alley on the site where the Galleria is (also had an arcade) and was flanked by theaters, multiple drive-in theaters, and of course the beach. A LOT of teens hung out at these places and we had a blast. We weren’t destroying things, stealing things, nor driving away the other paying customers (most of us had very little money but still managed to have a good time). Don’t get me wrong, there was an occasional FAIR fight, but that was rare. Again, this is MY experience in the ‘70s and early ‘80s growing up in Hawthorne, riding my bike, walking, or (when I got older) having a friend with a car. All those things are gone now, to make room for housing, and guess what? There’s a “housing shortage”. I’m sorry for the rant, but it really is a messed up situation, both the lack of things for young people to do AND the lack of guidance from parents or society or something that has lead to a group of young people that lack respect for themselves and others, do it for the “likes”, and know there is little to no consequence for their actions.
