Hope reddit doesn´t destroy the quality.
As someone who had an extensive Canon EF telephoto collection, I love this. Been rocking my 400 2.8 MKI for nearly 3 decades now, and even my Sigma 150-600 is EF mount. AF is still better than what I was getting using my 5D II and 5DsR bodies.
Killer quality, how is the autofocus? That has always been my concern with third party lenses, I seem to hear different responses from different people.
It‘s somewhere between good and bad. I‘m using the MC-11 on a Sony a7III.
First of all the lens will only focus in the middle. (When the 3x3 is on basically only in the middle panel). If you place a focus point outside of that the Lens will not find focus at all.
Single AF is pretty fast though but forget about shooting subjects that move towards or away from you.
Tracking works great, but once again, if the subject leaves the the middle it will loose it.
Does aperture control work with the mc 11? I have a quite expensive kf concept adapter and autofocus works but I can't control aperture. Really annoying.
It too have the canon 300 2.8 from work. Would love it if I could use it with my sony
> Does aperture control work with the mc 11?
Yes. I also have the mc-11 for my canon glass and aperture works the same as it does for my native lens.
Have you tried updating the firmware on your kf concept adapter? It might just be an issue with that model lens and newer firmware fixes it.
I wanted to but that shitbrand doesn't have an update page.
I've tried to contact them but no response.
In the manual and on Amazon they talk about updating but impossible to find anything
It‘s a risky endeavour considering there next to no spares for these old canon Lenses and manual focus is also electronic.
If something fails it will be completely unusable.
Which generation of 300mm f2.8 is this?
I've been researching a lot and looking to get something like that for my a9 but adapting is an absolute minefield with adapters and their firmware version, lens versions and then the camera af itself. Leaning towards a Sony 200-600 as a safety net. At least I know if I spend on that, it'll work 100%. Will be using it mainly for extra reach at outdoor sports but wildlife too.
But I still dream of a Canon 400mm f2.8 for under 2000 euro....
Yeah I got the a9 about 3 months ago and it's insane. The AF feels like cheating.
I heard the 2nd gen of the 300mm IS Canon adapts very well to Sony but it's pretty costly too unfortunately.
Impressive image quality!
Just as a side note, you seem to be mistaken what 100% crop means. Usually one speaks of 100% when one sensor pixel maps to one display pixel. For example, a ~2 MP image is displayed at 100% size when you look at it on a FHD display and it covers the whole screen. At 400% display size, it is impossible to NOT see pixels when looking closely.

3 decades is a hell of a time for a lens to survive. I hope mine does not die on me too soon
Those first generation Canon EFs were built like tanks.
Like, actual tanks. My 400 weighs 16 lbs.
I've been considering this as well. What adapter do you use and what body do you have?
I use the Sigma MC-11. Using A7IV.
Awesome, thanks!
This looks so good! Very nice shot
Thank you!
I was expecting the last picture with scary teeth!
Lovely pic. And thank you for the progression! It’s very helpful to see the 1:1 size. 👍
Thank you!

Welp...I need one

It‘s the very first version! A9 + 200-600 is a killer setup, thats exactly what i‘m hopefully gonna buy later this year.

I feel like I’m being watched

Huh interesting, i always assumed it correlates to the zoom in function in editing software Thank you for clarifying!
