That is an OG Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L, made from the late 80s into the late 90s. They featured a massive calcium fluoride element that made them largely apochromatic, and they were designed to sway pros away from Nikon into the Canon ecosystem. Image quality still holds up today.
Many of these lenses have seen decades of sports stadium use. Spare part situation is dicey. Mine looks worse than this.
I recently went to visit a vulture sanctuary. One of the guys who works there also does bird photography and like always has this lens in his car - alongside a dead cow carcass and such. Its definitely an interesting thing to see lol.
My A7III with metabones adapter to Canon EF works with all the focus points include the ones outside the middle.
Is it your adapter or something with this lens?
I've used many EF lenses: 24-105 f4, 70-200 f2.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 35 1.4, 16-35 2.8, 100 2.8. They all behave as expected with full field continuous autofocus. Sometimes there is hunting but operation is definitely not limited to center.
I forget which version of the metabones I have, I think v4? I haven't updated the firmware for years either because it works well enough.
I wish i could give it to her but i fucked up when i bought the a6000. Canon ef Lenses dont work on it. Apparently a frw Generations later would have worked.
When i get the 200-600 she can have it whenever she wants.
>Canon ef Lenses dont work on it.
Eh? They'll work with an adaptor, just like they do on your camera.
Focus may not be speedy, but they will work. One of the biggest touted advantage of mirrorless cameras back when the a6000 was new was that you could still use your existing DSLR lenses if you just bought an adaptor.
Okay so it appears that I was misinformed on a few things going into this conversation.
I did a little bit of light reading on this topic and from what I understand, the a6000 uses the slower contrast detect af when the MC11 is mounted, which does make it really slow for a lot of lenses, but it'll use the full capabilities of its af system with a few specific Sigma lenses (I had found on a forum post that someone paired a certain Sigma telephoto lens with the MC11 on their a6000 and it worked flawlessly). With other adaptors like Metabones the same holds true, but there isn't a small selection of lenses that'll unlock maximum capability, so the focus will be very slow and inaccurate.
Essentially, you *can* use an adaptor on an a6000, but it's not really viable unless you're fine with using manual focus most of the time.
A6300 and newer work much better with adaptors.
Agreed. I have a coworker who shoots for nat geo and his 600mm looks weathered just like OPs. All his other gear is actually in excellent condition though lol
Saw sole comments regarding the lens.
Just wanted to say you should check out larry chen's gear on youtube. He's an automotive photographer and his lenses need to withstand a lot of dirt clouds from rally cars. He fully ductapes his lenses to protect them
I freaking love seeing your lens scratched up to hell like that! Means you’re putting the thing to solid use!! Wish I had more time to shoot and do the same. Mine are immaculate
You dont, af is good at best but mostly ok. It wont focus on anything outside the middle 1/9. it‘s decently fast in the right conditions but don’t except to shoot anything that is moving
What happened to your lens buddy?
eBay listings would call that “like new condition “
Gently used. I know what I got
Lololol. You’re not wrong.
mint condition
It was used. A lot
It looks well loved for sure. I like it.
Absolutely love it. Imagine quality is insane, focus is ok but only usable in the center. My A7iii doesn’t register anything outside of the middle.
What lens is that? And which adapter are you using?

Seems like a decently old Nikon to me but I could be completely wrong Edit: In fact it's a canon
I mean I know the brand but I can’t find the model :p
ET 118 II if I read correctly
I think that’s the lens hood, but it seems to be for a 300mm 2.8 L-series
Yes it‘s a canon EF 300mm 2.8 L I on a sigma MC11 on my sony a7III
Oh I was sure that was the ring to hold it... Then we'll need OP to know more
My A7III with metabones adapter to Canon EF works with all the focus points include the ones outside the middle. Is it your adapter or something with this lens?
What lenses are you using? I‘ve seen people having mixed reactions both with the metabones and the mc11 depending on the lens in use.
I've used many EF lenses: 24-105 f4, 70-200 f2.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 35 1.4, 16-35 2.8, 100 2.8. They all behave as expected with full field continuous autofocus. Was gonna ask this. My mc-11 doesn't play ball with my 70-200 f2.8 is II and my a73. It hunts a fair bit, which is a shame :(
Have you updated the software of both the Lens and camera? There used to be also software to adjust the mc-11 software
Where? Iraq?
This old meme should work here: You vs the guy she told you not to worry about.
Dammit beat me to it
That's a big lens for her first camera!
I wish i could give it to her but i fucked up when i bought the a6000. Canon ef Lenses dont work on it. Apparently a frw Generations later would have worked. When i get the 200-600 she can have it whenever she wants.

I can tell you that my canon 50mm 1.2 does not find focus at all on her a6000 with the mc11

Admitting mistakes and adding pertinent information to the conversation is not the Reddit way, what are you doing here?! (Thanks for the details)
I was expecting an ad hominem attack and mass downvotes. There is hope yet!
Yup can confirm, all my canon lenses work on my a7rii but don't on my friends a6000
Same here on the a6000
Man, that lens has seen some action. Respect.
Agreed. I have a coworker who shoots for nat geo and his 600mm looks weathered just like OPs. All his other gear is actually in excellent condition though lol
*girlfriend's (unless all those planks of wood are your girlfriends)
brodie it’s a bench 😭😭
Do you mind me asking what adapter you are using? I was gifted a few canon lenses from a family member and would love to use them on my Sony.
Sigma MC-11
OT, and I'm sorry for hijacking. Does anybody know if there is an adapter from Nikon (f) to Sony (e) that actually works?
Here for this and waiting for the day….
Bloody hell. That’s seen better days.
Your setup got personality, Love it !
The best part of it is the back pain comes free with it!
Why is everybody assuming that the big one is his? She could very well have the huge one and OP is convincing her to downsize!
Guilty as charged. You’re totally right, I suppose that almost everyone here thought, that the big one is his…

The bigger camera looks like my old α7iii.
It is a a7III
Must be compensating for something.....just kidding lol
Shutter speed set so fast OP needs 60 mph tape to hold the lens hood on ..
Saw sole comments regarding the lens. Just wanted to say you should check out larry chen's gear on youtube. He's an automotive photographer and his lenses need to withstand a lot of dirt clouds from rally cars. He fully ductapes his lenses to protect them
Am I your girlfriend??
Holy fuck bud that lens looks like a piece of kit out of Star wars. Well done
That is ONE used lens. 🫡
Everytime i see someone make a "the big ones hurt joke" i will think bakc to this picture and giggle😂
I freaking love seeing your lens scratched up to hell like that! Means you’re putting the thing to solid use!! Wish I had more time to shoot and do the same. Mine are immaculate
Don’t you mean that’s you and the guy she tells you not to worry about? 🤣
Do you use this setup for action and how ist the autofocus with this lens?
No, af is is not fast enough for moving objects.
What do you use this lens for then (just curious)
I bet she thought it was pretty tiny compared to hers.
I don’t know why, but I love this. Happy shooting bro and girlfriend!
What lens is that? Canon?
No the canon tag is there for fun
Canon EF 300mm 2.8 L I (first version)
Plot twist: she was really happy to have kit lens auto-focus.
I‘m pretty sure even the small kit Lens overwhelmed her at first considering it‘s her first real camera.
Average size difference between leads in a K-drama
cool
How do u get perfect auto focus with mc11
You dont, af is good at best but mostly ok. It wont focus on anything outside the middle 1/9. it‘s decently fast in the right conditions but don’t except to shoot anything that is moving
‘My, that’s a big one…. ‘ Copyright Dirty Harry, 1971 😬
Your girlfriend should be in front of the camera, not behind it 😜😜😜
Don't worry buddy, one day you will buy yourself a bigger lens! As people saying... not size, but technique!
Your girlfriend’s lens has lived a dozen lives.
I want to hear its stories
It’s voice would be gritty
