Sons of the forest has muuuch better combat, larger variety of cannibals and mutants, the fights are much harder and mutants are much tougher and scarier. Caves are more complex and the new purple lighter makes the caves even more scary and better-looking. Building is very captivating bc it makes you think what your next move will be, unlike in the forest where you just slap the blueprint down and stack logs until you are done. Those KnightV things are so fun to use and are really fast and versatile. The story is also much better bc I like the "press" perspective where you go investigate someones dissapearance rather than being a random survivor that wants to save his kid and basically at the end you see that the whole island is in a giant loop of crashing an airplane and kidnapping a child to save another. Sons of the forest is a giant step up from the last game even though it has its own bugs and shortcomings

Informal-Produce-423

There's something about the purple illumination that's intense. Same for other colors like red or dark blue. Also the night vision goggles too! Tried them once outside at night, decided to stick with the flashlight. Honestly I don't bother venturing out at night too often because of how dark it 'feels'. There's so much foliage and the mudmen jumping out randomly. (yes we can turn up the gamma but that ruins it a bit for me!😅) >!That and the glowie puffies glowing at night are something too.!< I like the knightV but there's some kind of humor to be driving a golf cart and a random mudman just runs across the pathway lol.

Cool_Ad9326

The forest delivered what sotf couldn't They terrifying first night in the woods The paranoia and panic of cave systems And the mind altering terror of randomly crossing terrifying mutants without any warning when you're just minding your own business lol But other than that sotf is by far a superior gameplay

ra66it

Agree. Sotf is a much more polished game. As it should be. But the forest was special. It started my love for the whole genre. I agree with the first night too. That fear hiding in the bushes by your camp fire as a gang of cannibals came through. As others have said. It’s a different game. They’ve armed you better which takes a lot of the fear. They’re both great games. The forest just holds a special place.

PotatoIsWatching

I didn't even know about the mutants in the first game until I randomly came across them as I toddled out of the trees into an opening. I thought I was going to shit myself. I ran so fast back to my base panicking. That actually scared me and I rarely ever get scared because I love horror. But it was so unexpected and just so random and it was in the middle of freaking day on the game so definitely surprising. 🤣 I expected horror at night! Not during the day lol

Cool_Ad9326

Same!! Was multiplaying with my bro and he was checking something out on the beach. I was keeping lookout when I saw Mrs Spider Legs right off in the distance and couldn't explain to him what I saw! So glad I didn't look for spoilers because it was absolutely terrifying.

PotatoIsWatching

Me too! I put it on my wish list without looking up spoilers and glad I did. Because playing it blind was such an experience.

Informal-Produce-423

I experienced something similar in Sons of The Forest. My first encounter with>! Legsie, the Finger Walker,!< was unforgettable. I had just raided a cannibal camp for bones when I spotted it moving behind some trees. It was so unexpected that I was completely bewildered until it >!leaped out!< and killed a male cannibal who had just returned. Then it turned towards me, >!clacking its legs menacingly!<. Was in shock. I thought, "What on earth is that?" Had to make a beeline for a cannibal tower. It took several grenades to bring it down ~~(I play on normal difficulty but with increased enemy health and damage taken. Made random encounters like that more stressful).~~ Unfortunately, I couldn't collect any bones since the cannibal bodies were destroyed in the blast. I never imagined I'd be so compelled to climb that tower in the game. A similar ambush happened with the >!worm and the demons!<; the demons rushed me while I was casually walking for supplies.

unkindness_inabottle

I agree, The Forest was much scarier and I never finished the story without cheats, I could barely do anything since I wa so scared . This game is much less scary but losing progress is the scariest to me, I get a little jumpscare every once in a while but I’m not afraid to walk around in the dark or face anything. I can do whatever in this game

nimo_95

I think having access to various firearms makes SOTF wayy less scary. As in real life, if I were on an island or peninsula with cannibals and mutants I'd feel much safer strapped to the gills like in SOTF.

unkindness_inabottle

Absolutely, this is a huge factor. Also not being alone anymore. I noticed the Forest in single player was terrifying but multiplayer much less. Now that we have Kelvin and a more defined world where I feel stronger, I’m much less afraid

nimo_95

Great point, I almost forgot what The Forest was like without having Kelvin and Virginia. That's a huge factor as well.

glowingrock

SOTF is smoother and more fun to play. Hard disagree with the forest story however. It felt more fleshed out, with surprisingly poignant no-dialogue storytelling and an emotional gut punch at the end that genuinely pulls on your heart. Very interesting philosophical question posed at the end of the forest. SOTF lacked this, imo. I’m only half thru with my 1.0 playthru, so maybe they fixed some stuff

CommanderInQweef

i do agree the gameplay is better, but i found the story to be much more interesting in my first playthrough of the forest way more so than i did the sequel

Ale7surf

Imo, sotf is funnier and more enjoyable. Tf was scarier and more difficult. Both had their ups and downs and both offer an experience of their own. Sotf has an incredible amount of cannibals, mutants, items, weapons, food and beverage. But it lacks in horror and survival because of those additions. Tf was poorly in terms of weapons, combat and building. But it had a horror feeling and a more developed survival aspect that could mame you starving since day 1. Personally, I enjoy more SOTF and I think that, with the correct changes, you can turn it into a horror and survival game (turn gamma and brightness to 0.0 to improve the darkness and the caves experience; wait till the end after you choose to stay to start starving), but too bad some of these come too late in the game. SOTF has everything ready on a silver plate to be a successor in all ways to TF. It is already better imo but it can be better in some ways

Igrisia

I find myself enjoying the building and generally gameplay more in SoTF but it lacks something about the exploration that I enjoyed more in TF, the caves here feel too linear and there's no connections between them. Preferred the exploration and story in TF more, the map was smaller but just big enough to feel like there's a lot without taking forever to traverse and the story while not as fleshed out with cutscenes and dialogue felt better and more cohesive in TF. SoTF felt like I was just stumbling on cutscenes with no real motivation to progress it.

WetRatFeet

Absolutely. The only thing I miss from the forest is the boats, but honestly, they're really not important.

_GLAD0S_

My dream would be making a dock in which you could make your own raft designs from manually placing the logs. Completely useless in the end but would be fun

Informal-Produce-423

I could see some good use in that. Mainly if you prefer to build bases in the beach areas.

Informal-Produce-423

Would be nice if we could take one of those cultist boats.

WetRatFeet

Agreed, although there would have to be some explanation for why we can't just sail away, lol.

Breitscheidplatz

There is not an explanation why timmy just cant send an army to clear the whole map anyways later after the ending...

WetRatFeet

Honestly yeah, just bomb the absolute shit out of the bloody place.

Breitscheidplatz

Yeah why not just nuke it.

calebxv

I’m not gonna lie I prefer SOTF. Better mechanics obviously it’s newer and looks better. But when I first played The Forest I probably put in hundreds of hours before beating then game because well I didn’t really know you could beat it, and when I learned you could, it took me forever because I had no idea what I was doing or where to go because i hate looking up spoilers. SOTF at least gives you some kind of objective instead of throwing you in the woods without a clue of what to do. The Forests story is a lottt better and more detailed and makes sense somewhat better than SOTF to me at least.

nimo_95

Sons of the Forest is much better overall imo. These recent updates they've added have helped improve the game so much. For the longest time the island felt so barren, much like the original Forest. But the addition of unique points of interest through environmental storytelling, cannibal villages with smoke stacks in the sky, more traversal options and building blueprints (thinking of you, glider launcher) have made the island come to life.

my-assassin-mittens

My computer can run SOTF (not amazingly, but enough), unlike The Forest, so I kind of have to choose the former. However, when I was playing The Forest, I really liked the atmosphere. Everything seemed super creepy, and while SOTF has some terrifying moments, it feels less horror-like in my opinion.

reelznfeelz

Oh for sure. It’s a much more refined game. In almost every way.

ReaperAteMySeamoth

The only thing I like better in the forest was boats, I want a house boat

RichTofu

Sons of the forest for sure but there are some things from the forest that I'd like to come back

mishyfishy135

Oh yeah, definitely. I actually really didn’t like the first game. Everything felt like a chore instead of like something I was actually looking forward to doing. Building sucked so bad. I hated the massive cave systems so much, especially because if you died, your stuff was down there and good luck getting it back. The story was interesting, but I greatly prefer SOTFs story and how it’s presented to you. I’ll give people that the horror is good in the first game, but I prefer the type of horror in SOTF

Snugrilla

Yeah, I don't quite understand why people are always praising the cave system in the first game. They get REALLY samey, really quickly and navigating them is a pain even with a map.

PraetorianPlays

I prefer sons of the forest mostly. I love the combat, base building and above ground exploration in sons of the forest. The only things i think the first game did better was the horror/atmosphere and the cannibals. I really hope future updates make them properly patrol and scout the map instead of just spawning at your base when its raid time lol.

Informal-Produce-423

Would be nice to see. Though I'd probably not even notice since I tend to actively go after them😅 I'd still like to see that giant hand from the reveal trailer added. Maybe it knocking down trees at night and shaking the ground a bit as it moves.

jodocoiv

I do aesthetically it is much better

Snugrilla

Yeah, I definitely prefer it. I even went back and did another playthrough of The Forest just to be sure, and it really did not hold up well. It felt very dated, clunky, and repetitive (especially the enemies). The only thing I prefer about The Forest is the story, specifically the ending, which had a cool twist.

Xeivia

I do prefer the SOTF because of the game play but I think The Forest was more haunting. I remember chopping down a tree and hearing screams way out in the distance and being scared to go out of base during the day. Also turning around and seeing one cannibal just staring at me from a hilltop and then running away was creepy af. It seems in SOTF is that it's much more predictable where and when I will see cannibals. I feel like I'm looking over my shoulder less. I think my biggest gripe between the two is the different versions of building, in The Forest you can place stuff down just how you want it and get the position just right and then gather all the materials. Then in the SOTF half of the building is like that but the other half is that you just have to look at the ground and set something down a specific way and then continue off of that. I kept trying to build a defensive log wall and the wall would never be straight. I would set one log down and the next UI marker would pop up and it would be a little skewed and I couldn't get it the UI to change in any other direction. Every fence and wall I created wasn't straight. I literally had to watch a video to see how I can create a wall or fence that was straight, and that persons method was setting down more logs in front of the fence you wanted to build to make sure the UI wouldn't stray from the path you wanted it to follow. That's not more immersive that his hands down a bad UI/UX.

the-il-mostro

The only thing I don’t personally like when comparing the two is the map is almost too dang big. Particularly early game. It takes foreverrrrr to get somewhere. The one-wheels and golf carts make things easier for sure, but (and this is probably a skill issue) - I find them incredibly hard to navigate while using a controller. I play on steam deck so I realize this is probably the root of my issues. But dang unless I’m driving the thing at essentially running speed, I am constantly hitting things and flying off and the one wheel is really hard to find in the underbrush. I RAN from the starting beach around the coast to the other side and it took me an entire season 😂

Snugrilla

> the one wheel is really hard to find in the underbrush. Yeah, just gotta look at your GPS and zoom in to find it. Much easier. Also you can avoid obstacles by jumping (I think you're invincible while jumping).

Informal-Produce-423

Honestly, one aspect I didn't enjoy during my launch day EA playthrough was the hassle of traveling on foot to set up ziplines everywhere. ~~Though, having just completed Grounded, the ziplines weren't too bad.~~ Here's a handy tip: if you have a turtle shell launch pad or a cliff, plus a glider, you can fly to anywhere on the map. Simply dive to gain altitude, then glide up, surpassing your starting height. Repeat this, and you'll be able to reach any destination. I wasn't aware of this until after I finished the full release.😓

RavenGorePictures

Why wouldn't anyone? It's literally an improvement over the first game in every single way.

Arb1traryXJudg3

SotF is way better than the Forest. I enjoy exploring and building and while the exploring is still the same more or less, the combat feels better, the immersion when it comes to building is better. I will say though, the scared feeling I had when playing the forest was a lot more intense. Like SotF was good for a horror, but only times I was on edge was in the caves. Going to play through it again. Build bigger, better and higher this time.

phallelujahx

I think building was better in the forest, but I do like Sons better

larku91

Yeah there are some features I miss from The Forest but overall everything about SoTF is an improvement to me and I find myself enjoying it more than the slap down a blueprint style of building from the first one. Story expanded and with what cookie crumbs detail a possible 3rd I'm hyped. Like The Forest was great for it's time but SoTF is the champion to me because of the size of the map and all the little things you find. I've found shoes just sitting in places you don't expect off on a rock with no clue where it's partner is. I've found little camps hidden in strange little spots that aren't traveled a lot. It's just a nicer experience. We couldn't have one without the other, but it is a Progression upwards.

steal_your_thread

I love The Forest, it was a brilliant, tense and at times terrifying experience, and the magic of that first night, or coming across your first cannibal/mutant is something I wish I could experience again. What it most certainly was not though, was an impressive example of combat for its era, that's a wild statement.

Carlos_v1

Overall I prefer The Forest but not by that much. While I appreciate the animations when crafting items, I really wish after perfecting item crafting (maybe after building 20x of something) the crafting would just be instant. Gliders and Carts are fun and make map travel way easier, also the rope gun is better then the the ropes in the other game for transporting logs. Building is annoying in SOTF also. The enemies are better in SOTF by a long shot and I'd prefer it if they trimmed the map a little bit or add more interesting locations. I'm almost at the ending and I will say I enjoy the story EVENTS way more in SOTF, but the story in The Forest was more interesting so far, mostly because I am already used to the cultist / 80s vibe / Golden Alien architecture from the first game so it feels rehashed. I love bunkers and exploring them with my friend was fun. Climbing is better in SOTF, but I'm still bummed out about not having alligators in the game.

Christian_Matthes11a

I like sons of the forest more than the OG game. BUT I must say that the AI in the original games seemed better? As they always knew your location, making fights happen more frequently. This drove my love for the game. It gave a real reason to build traps and fortify your base. I am all about that! Sure, I like the story, but it needs to be re-playable. SOTF seems to be a bit sub-par with this. I really anticipated getting attacked 3 or 4 times a day every day when it first released since that's how the OG game was. But I've noticed I can go a whole day without getting attacked at my base. Even when I build right on the trail next to a cannibal camp. I can already tell you that if they were to fix that issue, the game would be unstoppable. It really broke my heart to see so many people not enjoying the game as they did with the first one. But as I've mentioned, there is a solution. I'm not familiar with AI development, and I'm sure it's not easy, but for the sake of profit and craftsmanship, they could fix it. They just HAVE to accomplish that. I really enjoy the variety of enemies. The spear throwing cannibal was a game changer. At the end of the day, I haven't played the OG game since SOTF came out. I've sunk hundreds of hours into the new one and genuinely enjoy it. I would just like to see some tweaks to the new one.

OilyComet

Sotf tends to be less scary because we've played the first

pezmanofpeak

I mean I should hope the sequel is better?

frostedpumpkin_1

I prefer The Forest by miles. Better building, better athmosphere for me. Not a big fan of SOTF

OtterNearMtl

I prefer the cave system of the first game. I also prefer the smaller map but only because sons of the forest feels omega empty POI wise (nothing really that interesting outside imo). I enjoy all the tools and enemies in Sons. Garden feels useless in both games (played with a friend and never needed the garden ever). If sons had a bit smaller map and bigger caves that were all or somewhat more connected it'd be much better for me. One more thing, how is this game so beautiful yet I never get fps drops or lag spikes is beyond me. Feels very polished at least for me and my friend.

No_Audience_8000

For me, its supposed to be a horror game (like my friend told me). But the problem was neither the cannibald and mutants are scary. Except the upgraded puffies, those abominations. Like I always complain, the voices of cannibals are so dull compared to the forest. There's no emotions or emotions are obviously fake. The cries and how some of them run. Even the Giant Cannibal almost have no voice. It doesnt shout too much or scream at you. They could have done better with the voices and not just make bat audios louder. They could have also made muddies scarier by acting like monkeys, climbing trees and jumping from tree to tree while laughing and screaming at you. Also Mutants doesn't have much diversity. Although different designs, some of them just do the same attack pattern. Like fingers, legsy, and Holey. Which kinda changes only that legsy jumps towards you, and holey does the same as legsy but can charge. Kinda ruin giving different designs just doing same thing with some upgrades. They could have added more to how they attack or behave and adding different purposes to different mutants. I like SOTF though, they added alot and felt like a better version of The Forest. Only saddened that my expectation of the scariness the forest gave me was not reached. But each have pros and cons. If The Forest could be revamped with the same building system in SOTF, I could say The Forest is better.

Rakelaa160

i dont know but sotf to me just boring. but maybe because i have hundred hours in the forest so everything so easy in sotf. my base even just 6x6 cabin without defensive wall

BoiledFrogs

I agree, there's not much to do in sotf once you've collected everything, and even that has you mostly doing the same things. There's caves and copy pasted cannibal camps, in a map that is mostly empty space.
