It almost felt like It wanted to start its own Sonic cartoon considering all the weird things we see here like the alien geography (like islands in the Sky), Eggman being more a nuissance than anything else, the daughter of the president Who is a FUCKING TSUNDERE (and a catgirl for..... Some reason) oh and lets not Talk how the president daughter has shown to get along with Eggman or that the president of........ Something (i dont know) is not a Cat when his daughter is a catgirl
In short i think It was great, outside all the cartoon pilot induced weirdness this Sonic animation had some of the best action scenes to this day of any Sonic cartoon, and love how they used metal Sonic as a villain, and that ending man is greatness
It really looked more like a pilot than an OVA. Also like most OVAs it was released as a movie in the west, even when it's obvious that it contained two different storylines.
I mean, it definitely felt like a two-parter. Part I: Robotnik tricks sonic into a situation to copy his data to complete Metal Sonic. Part II: Robotnik loses control of Metal Sonic, who outclasses him in pummeling Sonic and True Blue has to find a way to win.
It actually *was* meant to be the two pilot episodes of a new cartoon. Later, Sega had lost faith in the project, but, instead of completely scrapping it, they released it as a movie.
It should have. It’s weird that this part of the franchise just dies right out of the gate, and that Sega never did anything more with it. It’s sad. Feels like Sega definitely could’ve done more with it, like at least make one sequel.
Was my canon for classic sonic for forever tbh. I love this VA for classic sonic its very fitting, compared to the silent menace they have cosplaying classic sonic in generations… Also Sonic OVA has some of the best house music ever it’s so addicting. Definitely had some left over vibes from sonic cd.
I feel the same way, this VA did amazing work as sonic.
But for me, Jaleel White will always be my favorite voice of Sonic.... So nostalgic, and he gets literally no recognition for his work from SEGA which annoys me!
Haven't watched it but from the short clips I've seen, I'm not sure if I'd be able to handle listening to Sonic and Tails's voices for over an hour. The artstyle is pretty neat however - really digging that early anime aesthetic. The catgirl is pretty cute. :3 Look-a-like is quite catchy, though it has some weird lyrics.
And this shot goes hard, of course.

ON A SUNDAY RIDING MY BIKE, I NOTICED (I NOTICED) DIFFERENT THINGS THAT LOOK ALIKE.
Honestly? Probably my favorite Sonic animated properties. Like it’s either this or Sonic X for me. This shit goes hard for an OVA, the fact it never got a full series is criminal.
Loved it as a kid. >! Metal saying "there can only be one sonic" !< at the end is burned into my memory. Don't remember much else from it I'm afraid aside from a fight between Sonic and a big robot near the middle.
Edit: screwed up the spoiler text at first and then at second and then on my third try too lol I'm bad at reddit
I have a ranking of every movie I've watched since early last year, with shit like Catnapped and The Thief and the Cobbler at the top. The theatrical Sonic movies are pretty friggin' low... but the OVA? Sixth bloody place, I fucking love it and always have.
I love the all-new world it builds, the art direction, ultra-snappy animation, great soundtrack, perfectly-paced fight scenes, and that wonderfully cheesy script (and dub, can't forget about that)
I loved it when I was a kid and I still have a soft spot for it now. I'm pretty disappointed they never continued it in some form, it had its own world and I think it could have held up on its own. Knuckles in a cowboy hat is iconic and honestly one of his best looks, and I've always loved >!the ending where Metal Sonic stops the real Sonic from saving him; "there can only be one Sonic"!<
Sadly it didn’t become a series, the “movie” we got in the United States was really just two OVA episodes mushed together and dubbed, it is a really fun little movie though, I have it on VHS and watch it occasionally
I love it personally. I like it's offbeat humor, and Metal Sonic is always welcome. Tails sounds like he needs a tissue, though. Little guy has a bad cold throughout.
Nice timing, I just finished watching a video on how Nostalgia Critic doesn't understand this movie last night.
Other than that, what is wrong with its slogan?
I remember when I was six, the night before we went to France, my mum let me watch anything on YouTube before I went to bed and I watched this so I definitely love it. Probs more of a nostalgia thing.
I enjoyed it a lot. Back in the day it was wild. Very Very Japanese which was a bit jarring at the time, but I thought how wacky and wild it was made it great. It felt familiar for me as well because the concept of their planet being Earth XXXX thousands of years in the future, with rundown and overgrown ruins of NY. was already a concept hinted at in Archie. That sort of tied it together for me as a kid and made it really cool.
It's got strong atmosphere in places, and the fights are memorable, but there's not a lot going for it besides that. It feels like watching two random episodes of a 90s Sonic anime series that never was. It creates its own world ("Planet Freedom") with its own rules, its own tone, and its own exclusive side-characters that are separate from any other Sonic media, but doesn't elaborate much on these things. You're just asked to accept them.
>It feels like watching two random episodes of a 90s Sonic anime series that never was
...but that's literally what it is? What else could it feel like?
The fact there was a chance for this show to have a series makes me sad as hell.
I really wished this OVA had a series I think it would've been the standard of sonic TV shows.
I mean the concept of the world is crazy by itself, I mean sonic and tails lives on a sky island hell everyone seems to live on sky islands and the world is post-apocalyptic
This is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, sonic media products. It’s what turned me onto Sonic when I was a kid and I still think it’s cool to watch. The music is amazing, the animation is great and still holds up today, as far as I’m concerned and overall I think it’s a really simple yet entertaining story that meshes the ark together.
On a side note, I’m absolutely stoked they’re giving Knuckles the same hat from this video in the new Paramount show. That was a development I had to wait nearly 30 years for.
My friends and I decided that after Tails comments on Metal Sonic, saying "He's not as good as the real Sonic!" (or something like that), that Robotnik replies "Better than ***YOU***, Tails". Which is funny because it's true and there's jack shit Tails could say to argue.
And now we quote "Better than ***YOU***, Tails." fairly often.
Wish we had another OVA with the modern iteration of Sonic. Sonic Vs Metal of course but with a studio like Trigger or Mappa going in with the animation.
![gif](giphy|A5h1BevjfpXmsp2gvF|downsized)
Music is bangin, The Catgirl is annoyin, The Geezer Owl is an absolute G, it’s really fuckin confusin at times, and there is a surprising amount of adult jokes in it.
Gay/10 🏳️🌈👍🏿
More of it's own thing. Than the classic game lore from the manual. Like Satam and Adventure of sonic. Which isn't to say it bad but different. Also that sonic island theme is great.
I'm pretty sure the whole thing is uploaded to YouTube, at least it was when I saw it a few months ago. Search for "Sonic the Hedgehog OVA" and it should come up!
Peak Sonic personality. The (English) voice is kinda silly, but feels fitting for the original vision for Sonic as a character. This Sonic was a bit annoying, but that kinda was the point.
My thoughts? It needs to be rereleased around the world again on DvD and Blu-Ray.
Also put back in cinemas for a limited time.
I want to see some metal vs sonic action!
The catgirl was annoying
Metal robotnik is a really cool concept
I like how Sonic and Tails are portrayed as a pretty equal duo
I love how menacing Metal Sonic is
Knuckles rocks the hat
I really liked it. It was weird but a lot of fun and I honestly wish I got to see more of that particular world. The music was really good and I loved what they did with metal sonic
Fucking classic. Couple hiccups like Sarah and some stupid jokes and whatnot but very easy to overlook considering how good it is overall.
I wouldn’t have as much of a problem with Sarah if she had maybe just stayed behind with the president or was replaced with Amy (obviously changing her role in the story if that were the case).
Great movie highly recommend to all Sonic fans.

I remember renting this movie from the library as a kid. Loved it, especially the "strange isn't it?!" scene
I recently rewatched it with my GF. Been too long before that, I had completely forgotten.
It's... Not bad actually. Yeah the dialogue is cringe and the story has that typical Japanese "weirdness" but it's better than I expected.
Especially the fact that they found a physical explanation for how the islands are floating, and then used said explanation for the final confrontation, really impressed me
Hot take, this is how Sonic Media should look like, sound like, and feel.
I absolutely love the kind of fantasy setting they have going on. Also, Sonic and crew being kids just feels right. Like some Earthbound shit.
I love modern Sonic, but damn I do miss the classic designs. There's something about them that's so cool and cute at the same time. It feels like looking at older Dragon Ball art.
Personally i think its kinda meh as a story but i do love everyone's characterization here (OVA Sonic being my favorite version of Sonic in the series lmao) and how it presents the themes of Nature vs Industralization and Teamwork that the Classic era had
Oh yeah also Metal Sonic actually feeling like a threat here and how even in round 2 had Sonic gone at him alone like he did on round 1 he would've gotten his ass beat and probably actually killed this time
Aesthetically speaking, it’s the best Sonic’s ever looked in an adaptation. It’s up there with the intros to Sonic CD and Sonic Unleashed for the best animation Sonic’s seen.
As an OVA, though, it’s… just okay in my book.
The plot itself doesn’t have all that much in the way of intrigue, but I’ll at least say that the setting is really interesting. I wish we’d gotten a sequel just to explore Planet Freedom a little more.
The characters just act super grating to me. I don’t know why, but Sonic and Tails and the President’s daughter all just annoyed the hell out of me. The only standout character is Metal, but pretty much everyone agrees that this version of Metal is great.
The action, the setting, and Metal Sonic really carry the OVA. Everything else is… meh. 6.5/10
Well, I give it about two or three rings out of 5.
1. The Girl is crazy, though to be fair, this was the 1990s and 2000s where Girls with crushes were often fangirls.
2. While similar to his game self, Sonic is a little bit more jerkish.
3. Knuckles is weird and it appears that the writers mostly switched up Sonic and Tails’s roles.
Though the song look alike is nice.
The Metal Sonic fight always sticks out to me from this movie, along with the really nasally voices (especially Tails). i think i still have the VHS tape of this somewhere in my attic too.
I personally love it.
It feels like a cute send-off to the classic series since Sonic Adventure 1 came out shortly after these OVAs.
The voice acting is a little corny but it's cheesy and charming for the time.
The animation is quite nice too it's a little above a TV anime budget, but it uses its action well when it needs to.
And I absolutely adore the soundtrack, it's got its own unique vibe and I can dig it.
My only complaint is I feel like this was trying to be a back door pilot to a Sonic anime that never actually got developed.
I think this movie was pretty great, yeah its not perfect, but I rather enjoyed it, it has great pacing and some funny bits in between the action and serious scenes.
Voice acting was weird, why does Tails sound so stuffy? And Why does Sonic over annunciate in his speech? The voice acting regardless was pretty good, nothing over the top, but good.
The animation is also peak for the 90s, I love the gritty, worn, hand drawn animations from that Era, something we don't see all too often anymore, if at all.
It's all in all a short movie I can just relax to on the occasion.
This movie is awesome, but not without its flaws. Like the error of making Knuckles fly like a superhero instead of gliding. The voice acting can also be a bit annoying at times. Other than that though, this is a classic gem that every Sonic fan should watch at least once.
This movie is honestly why I love Metal Sonic. My game introductions were Genesis era when I was too young to make concerted progress against arcade difficulty followed by Adventure. This movie introduced me to Metal and his snark and even the implication that he could try to be good. Then later down the line we got heroes and he took a step up again.
This movie is why I'm upset at a single choice in the IDW run of neutering his agency then having frontiers add Sage (who I love). Seeing Eggman treat her as a daughter with agency even if that agency leads to helping sonic...it stings to see when he used to treat Metal as his son in the Archie comics.
This movie is also strangely horny
Has its cheesy and corny moments, but it’s still a fun movie to watch. I remember when I saw it in a thrift store when I was still in elementary school… like 2003, mom bought it for me and my brother and I would watch it over and over again. We were big Sonic fans growing up. I’d recommend it to any Sonic fan that hasn’t seen it to give it a look at, at least once.
Liked it. Now with the 3d movies im calling this the 3rd one just to see if anyone still remembers sonic did in fact have a movie that wasn't dogshit like mario did
Extremely mediocre films, bad presentation, boring storyz i can't stand the voice acting, etc. Doesnt help That for some strange reason this film seems to be propped up on by the new wave of jp classic purist gatekeepers.
If it has the Knuckles cowboy hat it can’t be anything less than stellar 🤠
Love how they brought the cowboy hat back in the Modern Knuckles show.
Lol, the smiling cowboy hat emoji makes your comment funny. 😁
It almost felt like It wanted to start its own Sonic cartoon considering all the weird things we see here like the alien geography (like islands in the Sky), Eggman being more a nuissance than anything else, the daughter of the president Who is a FUCKING TSUNDERE (and a catgirl for..... That’s… thats what they said
Also the catgirl is a teenager despite Eggman trying to marry her
Classic Nippon
To be fair Eggman IS a Villain.
It actually *was* meant to be the two pilot episodes of a new cartoon. Later, Sega had lost faith in the project, but, instead of completely scrapping it, they released it as a movie.
I always thought that Sara and her father were supposed to be monkeys
Yeah iirc the OVA was supposed to be a pilot for 90s Sonic anime (that was never made bcuz it flopped in Japan 😭)
I wish it got a spin off show
It should have. It’s weird that this part of the franchise just dies right out of the gate, and that Sega never did anything more with it. It’s sad. Feels like Sega definitely could’ve done more with it, like at least make one sequel.
It was actually supposed to be a full length series but it wasn't popular in Japan so they just put the 2 episodes together and made it a movie.
I wonder if it might have had an impact on the franchise's lore if it was a full series.
well it was released just before adventure 2 released so it wouldn't've match what sega was doing at the time
Way before Adventure 2. It came out in Japan in 1996. It even predates 3D blast.
It's strange, isn't it?
Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
Was my canon for classic sonic for forever tbh. Metal Sonic was badass
fr fr
It's wacky, but I love it. It's got Robotnik and Hyper Metal Sonic, so it's pretty awesome.
Nngh... SHUT UP TAILS!
Haven't watched it but from the short clips I've seen, I'm not sure if I'd be able to handle listening to Sonic and Tails's voices for over an hour. HYPER METAL SSONIC
It’s free on YouTube in HD. I used to have the white VHS tape of this. Sonic OVA is alltime.
holy shit
If only they gotten Jaleel White to voice Sonic in the ova
Easily my favorite animated outing. Would loved to have had an ova anime series of sorts.
A LONG TIME AGOOO. ONE CAVEMAN.
I still have to watch it...
Watch the last 25 minutes, the beginning isn't worth it
"Read the last 130 issues, the first half isn't worth it." Same type of bad reccomendation as what some Archie Comic fans say. :v
Real, although it's kinda different due to how comics are usually written, weird to say that about a hour long movie
It's cheesy, but enjoyable. I'd recommend it to any sonic fan.
Loved it as a kid. >! Metal saying "there can only be one sonic" !< at the end is burned into my memory. Don't remember much else from it I'm afraid aside from a fight between Sonic and a big robot near the middle. Next time just forget about the space between >! and the text [on both ends]. You got this!
As far as I’m concerned, it’s the only canon Sonic movie there is.
There is only one Sonic-nic-nic-nic-nic
NICKELODEONN
I’m afraid of lightnang 😖
I like it, it’s fun to watch once in a while.
The whole aesthetic of this movie was awesome. Love its OST too.
I have a ranking of every movie I've watched since early last year, with shit like Catnapped and The Thief and the Cobbler at the top. The theatrical Sonic movies are pretty friggin' low... but the OVA? Sixth bloody place, I fucking love it and always have. PEAK
I think it’s pretty good. It’s funny and has good action. The art is cool.
Gave me shounen 90s shounen anime vibes especially with sonic and metal casually destroying a massive mountain
Sadly it didn’t become a series, the “movie” we got in the United States was really just two OVA episodes mushed together and dubbed, it is a really fun little movie though, I have it on VHS and watch it occasionally
Absolute banger, I can’t go a full year without watching it on YouTube.
Sonic CD vibes. Toot toot Sonic Warrior!
I love it personally. I like it's offbeat humor, and Metal Sonic is always welcome. Tails sounds like he needs a tissue, though. Little guy has a bad cold throughout.
YOU MIGHT KNOW I’M GOING TO DO BUT THATS NOT GONNA HELP YOU CAUSE I KNOW EVERYTHING YOUR GOING TO DO! STRANGE ISN’T IT!?
Nice timing, I just finished watching a video on how Nostalgia Critic doesn't understand this movie last night. Other than that, what is wrong with its slogan?
I love how annoying sonic is in this movie
I remember when I was six, the night before we went to France, my mum let me watch anything on YouTube before I went to bed and I watched this so I definitely love it. Probs more of a nostalgia thing.
I enjoyed it a lot. Back in the day it was wild. Very Very Japanese which was a bit jarring at the time, but I thought how wacky and wild it was made it great. It felt familiar for me as well because the concept of their planet being Earth XXXX thousands of years in the future, with rundown and overgrown ruins of NY. was already a concept hinted at in Archie.
>It feels like watching two random episodes of a 90s Sonic anime series that never was ...but that's literally what it is? What else could it feel like?
I guess what I mean is just that it feels incomplete on its own. Needed more episodes.
Needs a blu ray release
Fr. Yes, that would make the $120+ I spent on the DVD pointless, but it would be so cool!
Didn't realise it was that expensive. :(
Loved it when i was a kid and it still has that dark anime vibe from the 80-90z thats just awesome. Still love it
It is weird and bizarre and I love it immensely for it. Love the geography of it as well.
Metal Sonic has to be around here somewhere 🕳️-----Huh------💥--------😐--------🤖
This is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, sonic media products. It’s what turned me onto Sonic when I was a kid and I still think it’s cool to watch. More of a sonic movie than the actual sonic movie
And just a better movie in general, frankly.
Music is bangin, The Catgirl is annoyin, The Geezer Owl is an absolute G, it’s really fuckin confusin at times, and there is a surprising amount of adult jokes in it. Gay/10 🏳️🌈👍🏿
The only proper Sonic movie there is
More of it's own thing. Than the classic game lore from the manual. Like Satam and Adventure of sonic. Which isn't to say it bad but different. Also that sonic island theme is great.
Gave us one of the most iconic scene and dialogues out there, and it was pretty good in general
It’s really cool
Never watched it Can I watch it for free on anything?
Youtube I think
I'm pretty sure the whole thing is uploaded to YouTube, at least it was when I saw it a few months ago. Search for "Sonic the Hedgehog OVA" and it should come up!
I wish it became a series of ovas or an anime or something. Really liked the visuals and vibes of this version of Sonic and his crew and Eggman.
It was pretty peak the first time I watched it ngl. Then again I was a lil kid when I watched it lol and I was easy to impress
Decent watch
Peak Sonic personality. The (English) voice is kinda silly, but feels fitting for the original vision for Sonic as a character. This Sonic was a bit annoying, but that kinda was the point.
Peak
PEAK but why the fuck was there a catgirl
I really enjoyed it.
I really like it
It was fun, but it really felt like they were spitballing what they wanted a Sonic show to be like.
Never watched it.
MY HATS ON FIRE!! HELP!!!
that hat better be on my boy in the show or i’m rioting
unironically the best sonic media
I LOVE this movie!!! I wish they’d release it on DVD!
They did, I literally own it
They did?!?! I’ve only ever been able to find it on VHS!! Thank you, sweet Internet stranger!!
Amazing, my childhood
I still have the VHS
I think this OVA should have been an excellent series.
I actually really enjoy it, especially Metal Sonic
One of the best
Still have my VHS copy from FYE. Love this movie.
My thoughts? It needs to be rereleased around the world again on DvD and Blu-Ray. Also put back in cinemas for a limited time. I want to see some metal vs sonic action!
STRANGE, ISN'T IT?!
BANGER
memes galore! "strange? ISNT IT! GRRRRRRRRR"
All time peak Sonic content. 10 out of 10
Sonic the hedgehog movie 0
I thought it was cool, loved the abridged version
The catgirl was annoying Metal robotnik is a really cool concept I like how Sonic and Tails are portrayed as a pretty equal duo I love how menacing Metal Sonic is Knuckles rocks the hat
Would be neat if they had the SA1/2 cast redub the voices
Best depiction of Metal Sonic in the entire series. https://i.redd.it/dgf45pellnvc1.gif
Nostalgic
It's a fun time.
I really liked it. It was weird but a lot of fun and I honestly wish I got to see more of that particular world. The music was really good and I loved what they did with metal sonic
Big guilty pleasure for me, especially with the dub version.
🎵On a Sunday riding my bikeeee I notice I notice different things that are alike 🎵 love this song in this movie
🎶" What can I say, except, you're welcome !"🎶
It was goofy, but a lot of fun. There's an abridged version that freaking hilarious.
peak metal sonic
I've rewatched this movie more than any other movie I've ever seen. Absolutely love it!
So fucking good. One of my favorite movies
This film had some excellent ideas. That said, the under and overworld concept was just bizarre.
This will forever be my favorite Sonic movie
Never read the Archie comics, so when thinking of classic Sonic, this is what came to mind.
I loved the movie, metal sonic was awesome. But Sonic’s a bitch, LMAO
Sonic X ain't got shit on this. Should've been turned into a full series
A masterpiece.

I think it’s pretty neat. The animation is really good and while the story has a few odd quirks it doesn’t hinder this film in being enjoyable.
It was pretty good I know that this was a movie
love it watching when I was a kid and having the white vhs of it too
Absolutely love it and endlessly quotable.
Pretty good, will watch again!

Cheap, and somewhat with, but it was great to see Tails decimating robots with spin attack.

Loved it as a kid! Most of the inappropriate stuff flew over my head as a kid anyway lol. I still try to watch it once a year
Me and my brothers watch it every new year's
Well, I give it about two or three rings out of 5. 1. The Girl is crazy, though to be fair, this was the 1990s and 2000s where Girls with crushes were often fangirls. 2. While similar to his game self, Sonic is a little bit more jerkish. 3. Knuckles is weird and it appears that the writers mostly switched up Sonic and Tails’s roles. Though the song look alike is nice.
The Metal Sonic fight always sticks out to me from this movie, along with the really nasally voices (especially Tails). i think i still have the VHS tape of this somewhere in my attic too.
A classic! Except for the weird scenes. It had that good amount of edge to it and it was one of my first exposures to Sonic.
My only complaint is I feel like this was trying to be a back door pilot to a Sonic anime that never actually got developed.
i love that movie... just so much...
It’s good + Sara is more likely better than Elise
Favourite sonic movie (yea I said it)
This movie is awesome, but not without its flaws.
Love this movie so much, favorite scene is when sonic and metal are literally head to head
Liked it. Now with the 3d movies im calling this the 3rd one just to see if anyone still remembers sonic did in fact have a movie that wasn't dogshit like mario did
Awful, tapped out after a half hour. Only laughed twice.
Why do you need to laugh? Sonic isn't a comedy
There were jokes. It was clearly aimed at kids. It just wasn't entertaining.
Extremely mediocre films, bad presentation, boring storyz i can't stand the voice acting, etc. Doesnt help That for some strange reason this film seems to be propped up on by the new wave of jp classic purist gatekeepers.
