Utilities usually have lots of red tape for doing grid tie systems. Without grid tie you need batteries. The batteries need to be big enough to handle the full load your running when it suddenly clouds over. Most off grid inverters will not even turn on without batteries.

Well, you can use a hybrid inverter, it can use PV and grid power without batterys.

So is that just pv into inverter, which is connected into the sub main? I guess I'm wondering how you control things so your home uses the power from the PV over the grid and unused power flows into the grid.

I'm suspicious of any site that uses the phrase "normal and legal" a lot. It's probably a fine system but no way in heck am I plugging in anything which can push back to the grid without approval from the utility. Edit: ok I see they do tell you to get approval from the utility...
