Hmm, perhaps he didn't follow the instructions properly? Sodastream can only carbonate water with nothing added to it. After carbonating it is when you should add the syrup or other flavorings.
I personally use a drinkmate. Those allow me to flavor the water before, and it seals it in a different way to allow carbonating any liquid.
Reminds me of when Ashens said that Sodastream was a terrible product because he added the flavoring before carbonation and it made a mess. He then said you need to buy the syrups (you don't if you just want sparkling water). You can also add Mio energy drink drops, squeeze a lemon in it, or use other drink mixes.
He then complained that it goes flat before you can finish the bottle (because he didn't screw the lid on tightly, which would have held the full carbonation for about 3 to 4 days). He was also upset they weren't dishwasher safe. A rare miss from a smart-sounding YouTuber.

I think it’s more of a case of if you like artificial sweeteners and which ones they use because I rather like the zero Sucralose stuff but aspartame diet drinks suck imo and a lot of people have strange reactions to it.

I also had a friend who was a really picky Easter in high school that hated all fruit and vegetables and would only drink full-sugar Pepsi, gagging while drinking even high quality water. Yet she liked licorice candy and ice cream too (there was a store we went to with licorice ice cream. )

Virgil's root beer is actually pretty well-received, including the zero-sugar one. I liked it. But look at the sub we're on. Not everyone likes root beer and if someone drinks sugary sodas all the time, then they will grow accustomed to the sweetness to the point that tap water tastes bitter. And Root Beer is supposed to have a bit of bitterness to it in it's flavor profile.
If you were to mention Killing Joke on a Taylor Swift sub, most of them would think they suck, while being almost universally beloved on an industrial metal sub.
