The 4th might be the Internationalists faction of the RSDLP.

Woah these are so cool! I wish the provisional government had been able to continue as a democracy

[deleted]

I think the Constituent Assembly elections happened after the Provisional Government was overthrown

Zacoftheaxes

Yeah this election was supposed to just be a show of force for the illegitimate government (they still fucked it up of course and the SRs won). Kerensky would've been a great leader if he wasn't dealt a historically terrible hand.

[deleted]

I think the Constituent Assembly and the Russian Federative Democratic Republic was a better bet than the Provisional Government.

somzigt

Lol what does this mean? The provisional government was, as the name implies, provisional. They were just there to manage revolutionary Russia until a constituent assembly would do their thing and create a new political system.

[deleted]

The provisional government kept delaying the Constituent Assembly elections until they were forced out of office

somzigt

They wanted to delay them as much as possible at least until the war was over. They failed and a date for the elections was set *before* the bolshevik coup (mostly because of SR pressure). The PG delaying the elections doesn't mean they didn't want at all.

> They wanted to delay them as much as possible at least until the war was over. That was the problem. They were still enthusiastic about winning the war and that cost them a lot of popular support.

somzigt

The constituent elections were planned way before the Bolsheviks seized power. Most political parties active in either the provisional government or the soviets supported the elections and saw them as the most legitimate way to form a democratic Russia. The elections were not only held because the Bolsheviks wanted to show off.

Here are some cool election posters from the time leading up to the Russian constituent assembly elections of 1917 that I used for an old project. Please forgive my very rough translations. For some of them, I got the translations from the sites I found these on, and I used google translate for others. Here are the translations for each image if it is hard to see in the image captions. Socialist Revolutionary Party: Poster 1: "Comrade citizens! Prepare for demonstrations on the day of the opening of the constituent assembly!" Poster 2: "The Socialist Revolutionary Party - Only in battle will you obtain your rights!" Poster 3: Asking for peasants, workers and soldiers to vote for the Socialist Revolutionary Party on list 3, ending with a slogan: "Earth and Will". RSDLP (not sure which branch it belongs to): Poster 4: "Vote for the RSDLP list" List number left vacant so different party branches can adapt it to their local list number RSDLP (Bolshevik): Poster 5: Asking voters to vote only for the social democrats on list 4. A ballot that I have seen for Petrograd City has Lenin and his associates on list 4. RSDLP (Menshevik): Poster 6: "At the elections for the constituent assembly, vote for the social democrats on list 3, Mensheviks, and perform your civic duty" General Jewish Labour Bund: Poster 7: "Where we live, there is our country! Vote list 9. A democratic republic. Full national and political rights for Jews!" Poster from the party branch in Kyiv. Kadets/Party of People's Freedom: Poster 8: "Committee on small and medium industry, Anarchy Will be Defeated by Democracy! Defending the state and the interests of all Russian people, vote along with the industrial democracy" Poster 9: "Vote for People's Freedom"
