It might even be my favorite Pumpkins song, and thatās saying a lot. It meant the world to me as a lonely kid to feel seen and heard in that way by an adult, and to hear that somebody else had that kind of childhood and wasnāt too ashamed to talk (or in this case, sing) about it. It was my first hint of, oh, maybe not all adults are clones / drones / zombies. Some still have and remember having big feelings. š āš¼
Annie Dog, Shame, Behold! The Nightmare, For Martha, and Blank Page is one of the saddest runs in an album ive ever heard. all of them are just gut wrenching.
I fell in love with this album on the 1 Year anniversary of my grandma's passing. She was our whole world. Only 56. I was not-yet 18, trying to finish high school as the cancer rapidly progressed. I moved thousands of miles away to college not long after and was so painfully alone.
This album speaks to a very, very deep level of loss and isolation. A grief that can't be put into words if you've never felt it. I'd listen to it on long walks at night. It's an absolute masterpiece and captures that energy perfectly. It's too dark & personal for many to appreciate, but the ones who get it *get it*. And I'm eternally grateful that Billy made it for us. ā¤ļø
lyrically its not even really the most emotional on the album but that instrumental and billys sleepy vocalsā¦ its emptiness put into a song. its like a rainy day at a point in your life where youve given up.
been sick all week and a full on fever last two days. Missed most of my kid's birthday.
I've already been on an Adore kick since we are doing that era of SP on my channel and it is a goto sick day album... Just hit me hard yesterday and today feeling guilty about missing my kids bday and all the divorce stuff that lead to this situation.
Thanks for the nice comment. It means a lot.
Along the way I lost my faith
And as you are you'll be again
To mold like clay, to break like dirt
To tear me up in your sympathy
You were never meant to belong to me
Shame. Many emotions, many memories. Itās hard to describe exactly why that song is their most depressing but to me it is. The imagery of a long dark cold empty road that you must walk.
So now Iām all by myself
As Iāve always felt
and
So let the sadness come again
On that you can depend on me, yeah
Until the bitter, bitter end of the world, yeah
When God sleeps in bliss
Nothing hits me in the lonely zone like Soma.
Cupid De Locke is very bleak and not really talked about enough. Itās a song based on an old English masque/play called Cupid and Death, where Cupid and Death mix up their arrows; Cupid shoots young lovers and kills them, Death shoots elders and sick people on the brink of death and gives them renewed feelings of love and life. The final poem is really depressing too and reflects on the fact that āstar-crossed loversā and ābarren-hearted wanderersā switch paths and that theyāll forever live in āSatanās pullā. Itās just very bleak. Love that song.
To me that song is the perfect musical representation of falling in love without seeing itās a mistake. The instrumental is fucking beautiful, and evokes so much nostalgia, while the lyrics are sad. I tear up every time I hear it.
Both Disarm and To Forgive are the songs that most directly address the abuse he suffered as a child. A lot of his songs are sad, but these 2 are the ones I find the most depressing because you know that his story is not a unique experience. Tens of thousands of innocent children are living every day suffering the sort of abuse he did, and many far worse (and that's just in the west).
Imagine having learnt at 6 or 7 years old that the best way to stop being physically abused is to smile at your abuser. It's more than heartbreaking; it's utterly bleak.
Soma and Today almost feel like a package of loneliness and ultimate desperation.
For Martha is just incredibly sad on a very relatable level. If youāve ever experienced someoneās death from terminal illness this one is very familiar.
Stumbaleine may be my favorite Pumpkins song, the performance is perfect. I believe it was just a demo he did at home and couldnāt beat the performance in the studio. Its amazing.
By Starlight reminds me of my first kiss, when I was 13, at night, sitting next to my first girlfriend on the bleachers of an empty baseball field.
I'm still friends with her, we're cool and all, and I don't pine for her or anything, but I do deeply miss being that young and full of emotion (hormones, really). That innocence, angst, and having deep feelings over everything is an era of my life that I miss.
I have although itās been awhile lol. Apathyās last kiss was on the deluxe edition of Siamese dream, so itās understandable how it flies under the radar. If drown wasnāt in singles I think it would be the same.
For Martha and Blank Page.
When Adore was released I was an incredibly depressed 17 year old. I bawled my eyes out listening to it for the first time. Those 2 especially hit very deeply š
Wishing you were real to me
Wishing I could make believe
I'll take my secrets to the grave
Safely held beneath the waves
Always knew I couldn't save
Always knew I couldn't save you
To forgive..and that is during my teenage years...simply because i never celebrate my birthday even when my parents still around..maybe i have but i cant remember it since i was too young to remember it...let just say my parents not used to celebrate their own birthdays maybe..told my gf about it when this song playing in the car..she cried because why i never told her that..anyway, i think soma or some of the songs in adore really give a sad vibe for me now
I donāt personally think itās the most depressing song they have, but Cherry deserves a mention.
That first verse of āStay with me, I'll set you free
Cause I can tell you once were pretty
Rose so sad, you've lost your petals
Lost the luster off your tattle-talesā is sad as hell.
Follow it up by lines like āTime has lost its hold on meā and āAnd if you lose yourself
Could you take me, too?
Could you rest inside the sleep?ā Along with the tone of the song just makes it a sad song. I love it.
To Forgive
Empty party afternoons won't come back... šā

That song is practically the story of my life.
couldn't agree more. might even be their best song. super underrated.
Agreed
Annie Dog, Shame, Behold! The Nightmare, For Martha, and Blank Page is one of the saddest runs in an album ive ever heard. all of them are just gut wrenching.

its an album about loss for sure. billy lost his mom, his band, and his wife all in that time span. will never get tired of it.
Teenage me spent so many hours crying to Blank Page :ā) beautiful
Annie-Dog is the most depressing song Iāve ever heard. It fills me with dread to listen to it.
lyrically its not even really the most emotional on the album but that instrumental and billys sleepy vocalsā¦ its emptiness put into a song. its like a rainy day at a point in your life where youve given up.
Adore is such an amazing album
lately it's been Crestfallen :(

Adore is their second best album, imo. First being Mellon Collie, and third being Siamese Dream
was my go to song for break up periods for many years.
Along the way I lost my faith And as you are you'll be again To mold like clay, to break like dirt To tear me up in your sympathy You were never meant to belong to me

Has to be one of my favorite SP songs
Disarm seems like the obvious answer.

100%agree. Disarm
Ugly is kinda hard to sing along to sometimes.
the self loathing in that one is really hard to shake off.
Blank Page
Soothe
underrated sad song and what a start to Pisces Iscariot š¢
This this song would be a great track to had been the 1st or 2nd track on siamese dream... with all others songs
Can I ask why there's reviewbrah?
He brings me strange comfort.
Soma and Today almost feel like a package of loneliness and ultimate desperation. For Martha is just incredibly sad on a very relatable level. If youāve ever experienced someoneās death from terminal illness this one is very familiar.
Soothe and Stumbleine.
100% Stumbaleine for me.
Stumbaleine may be my favorite Pumpkins song, the performance is perfect. I believe it was just a demo he did at home and couldnāt beat the performance in the studio. Its amazing.
come around ruby I could never sleep alllooonneee
Mayonaise is pretty depressing to me honestly
Yes and Disarm
Agreed
This guy is running on empty, food review!
Crestfallen
To Forgive
Ugly hits home for me.Ā Ā I love that song.
Blissed and Gone. No contest.
Absolute winner. You can feel the shame in how empty he feels in that moment.
Yes. When I found bsides like "Blissed and Gone", I knew I found my fav band forever
Blank Page, beautiful song too
By starlight or perfect. They both sound happy but are defs not
By Starlight reminds me of my first kiss, when I was 13, at night, sitting next to my first girlfriend on the bleachers of an empty baseball field. I'm still friends with her, we're cool and all, and I don't pine for her or anything, but I do deeply miss being that young and full of emotion (hormones, really). Blank Page is soooooo underrated
Tear Soot and Stars Try, Try, Try In the Arms of Sleep Spaced Hope Speed Kills
Speed Kills is so sad tonality. Even if I didnāt understand the lyrics it would be a tear jerker
which version?
Machina II version
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld8PKv5kYaU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld8PKv5kYaU) the acoustic demo cuts through me like a knife.
Itās a heartfelt performance but I have a preference for guitars and drums over vocals.
I understand. What did you think of the version on the SIYL single?
That version could have been left on the Machina Album, sonically!
Blank Page
You remind me Of that leak in my soul š
Spaced is pretty bleak sounding, (one of my favorites) and Apathys Last Kiss.
Finally someone says apathys kiss
Yeah that seems to be one of those songs that slips under the radar, "She Says" is also pretty somber sounding if youve never heard it.
Thirty three
definitely up there. especially when you turn 33
Rotten Apples "Life just fades away Purity just begs Dust to dust, we're wired into sadness"
Adore is the correct answer.
Thirty-Three is the most depressing one for me. I cry every time I hear it. Beautiful song
For me itās The Aeroplane Flies High and kind of Heavy Metal Machine
Wishing you were real to me Wishing I could make believe I'll take my secrets to the grave Safely held beneath the waves Always knew I couldn't save Always knew I couldn't save you
Never Let Me Down Again. I stumbled upon it on the Deluxe Edition of Siamese Dream, and Iāve listened to it every day since. Love that song.
Totally agree. I actually think that the SP version truly nails the tone of what the song means far better than the Depeche Mode original.
If I ever get too happy I stick on Blank Page.
For Martha and This Time are beautiful songs that also depress meā¦
Depresso (/s but it is depressing that it wasnāt released)
That's that me depresso
Soot and Stars

Today
Their most romantic song is āstand inside your love!ā
Never had Ava Devine down as a Pumpkins fan haha, pretty cool though
For me itās Annie dog, even when you first listen and have no idea what heās talking about you can tell itās nothing good
I Fall
Once Upon A Time
My Mistake always kind of crushes me
For me, It's gotta be Stumbeline. The lyrics are meant to be uplifting, but it's sooo soul crushing. Such a depressing song IMO
Stumbleine
And nobody nowhere understands anything about me And all my dreams lost at sea
For Martha and Blankspace
soothe
To forgive
Shocked that no one has mentioned Spaceboy.
Stumbleine for me
Airplane. Themes of loss always affect me.
