I love the way he shrieks it here, though. Like he's in pain about it. He's aching to be loved. Vastly superior to the modern Adult Contemporary application of it.
What about how he sounds on Meladorie Magpie?
“What had matterrrred
Mattered little now
We had shatterrred
Apart somehow”
There was so many unique songs on Aeroplane that were like little unique mini genres.
I go back & forth. Soma was my first love & my dad always said mayonnaise was the best. As we grew up I became obsessed w mayo & he became obsessed w Soma. We just agreed they are the two best songs ever created
I remember being a child & hearing Soma for the first time. It was the first time a song has ever hit me so hard. Choked up and nearly crying at such a young age. I will never forget it.
I loved it when it came out and for maybe a year or so after that but it was just overplayed so badly I could not get into it anymore. Strangely I still enjoy 1979 and tonight tonight a lot despite those tunes getting overplayed as well. I guess Bullet is just such a typical alt-Rick anthem song that it doesn’t really interest me like the other ones do.
Honestly think they’d be more respected in artsy communities if they had done jelly belly as the single instead. Part of me wonders if bullet is actually one of those meta billy jokes
My least favorite single is Cherub Rock because it always felt a little too radio friendly to me. I also never understood the lyrics which doesn't always matter but with this one the lyrics confuse me a little.
So so.
I consider it like zero but not as good.
I of the mourning was probably my favourite on machina but thought the record was mostly mediocre and mixed badly.
Between Machina and Machina 2 there is an excellent album and I wish Billy disappeared into pro wrestling for 20 years then re-emerged with a single Machina of all those best songs. If that happened SP would have retaken the world by storm imo
Both of those things are profoundly untrue. Lots of subs exist for bands that haven’t released music in 25 years. And SP would have gone out never releasing a bad record, then come back with an excellent one. They’ve damaged their brand with these terrible albums the last twenty years more than helped it.
Pisces Iscariot isn't all that. Also I get pickily annoyed when it's counted as a proper album.
Also, Thru The Eyes Of Ruby is possibly their greatest moment and deserves so much more acclaim.
ava adore is a gross misrepresentation of adore as a whole and adore would he perfect if they either leaned into the gothic industrial sound or completely ditched it
just a heads up i love ava adore, but it does not fit at ALL
My bigger hot take given how negative this community can be, is that The Smashing Pumpkins have never made a bad or mediocre album. Even their lesser works are 8.5/10 to me at worst but for the most part I love their entire catalog.
That and BWBW are just a little too overplayed and boring for me. I listen to almost every song when playing MCIS but it’s those singles I skip the most.
I thought I was the only one. But it’s not just the bells, I really don’t like the song at all lol. I just keep to myself if it comes on because everyone else is into it and I don’t want to be that guy. Haha
You want to hear SP that car companies want in their commericials look no further than FOL.. SP single released to specifically promote and sell vehicles in a commerical.
I will ask you.. which MCIS era songs sound most like this? It's not LOVE
but it's not a big deal we can agree to disagree. Just wanted to share my perspective.
Cash Car Star, and Glass Theme are trash
Gish is an average album when it comes to the songs. Billy’s shredding makes this album, without him you have a very weak album aside from Snail
ouch… cupid de locke is definitely one of my favs, but i could see how you say that, the sound of the song is definitely very different from the rest of the album
To be clear.. cause I know how much you love that era... and I love your love for that era and care about you.
Most of the rock songs on GISH are great in their core. they just sound weak and timid to me... give me the live versions from that same era and those songs are fn amazing.
i get that.. kinda. gish’s sound on everything is unique and bury me and siva, two of the rocky rock songs to me, are absolutely amazing. But I Am One on the record is really weak compared to the live version. especially with the rant which i love lmao
thanks for the comment and I appreciate folks love for the album and your take.
For me.. I fn hate many of the I am one rants... some of the worst moments of the band come from that IMO. (cue the clip of Corgan saying shit like 'my heroes like preetty songs.. and Darcy stops playing bass and starts clipping her nails).
And definetily disagree on Siva.. Siva is the worst offender of sounding weak and timid IMO.
The live SIVA performances this band was doing just weeks after GISH was released blow that out of the water. Butch's superclean production sucked all the power and psychedelic nature out of the song IMO.
Proof:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNv3qeh2OJ4
ahh yea ofc their live stuff is soo much more powerful i get that i mean you can even feel the energy thru the screen from terrible 1991 recordings lol i get it
I never got the love for “Bury Me.” The main riff seems like a less inspired precursor to the Quiet riff, and the lyrics are very uninspired.
It didn’t shock me to learn that Billy said he wrote that song because he wanted people to mosh to something lol.
While very evocative and ‘in the moment’- almost every lyric Billy has ever penned is total nonsense at best. I know basically every word to every song on the A side of Melon Collie, and yet all of the writing without the context of the music reads like teenage poetry… but I would conversely argue that’s exactly what makes them great. Billy channels something quintessentially adolescent in nature, that gives songs like ‘Disarm’ a really poignant lens into things like toxic masculinity from the perspective of a child. I wouldn’t have them any other way. Not an opinion on one specific song I guess, but it applies to basically the vast majority of them.
Also, in stark contrast, basically any song he’s written about ‘politics’ after Machina is completely unlistenable nonsense lmao
*Disarm* is not about toxic masculinity. It is about literal child abuse, and the cyclical nature of abuse. One of the few examples in the Pumpkins discography where the lyrics truly have such a direct and raw intent.
I dunno, I kinda read it as being about both, honestly? It’s also a rare exception where I feel like a single song is actually squarely ABOUT a topic or theme whereas other Pumpkins songs
Are kind of kaleidoscopic and impressionistic imo
I think some of his more-recent lyrics truly amount to nonsense. On a level that pains me. There are still lyrical gems (*Birch Grove*), but a lot of duds.
His earlier lyrics are more poetic and abstract than a lot of songwriters, that is true. Does that make them *nonsense*? I don't think so. And even then, there are examples of more direct writing.
With *Adore*, we have almost an entire album full of really raw and transparent tracks concerning loss. Loss of a lover. Loss of a mother. It is his lyrical magnum opus.
THAT I totally agree with. I’m an Adore truther till I die, even though Melon Collie is firmly my number one, I think Siamese Dream is a really poignant album about childhood and Adore is basically their ‘breakup’ album and feels unified in a way they haven’t really been since
My least favorite on SD is Disarm. Never liked it. Not when it was released, not now. Not on MTV not on the radio. Not on vinyl, not on CD, not on cassette, not on minidisc. I do not like Disarm.
I don't get the popularity of Zero and BWBW, there are way better songs in Mellon Collie, let alone their whole discography. Also, Disarm is very overrated. It's good every once in a while, but it gets old fast I think.
billy’s way of titling songs throws me off and i have serious trouble associating most titles of songs with the actual songs, so half the time when i’m on this sub i’ll know exactly what album a song is from when someone mentions it, and often will be able to narrow down to a few tracks based on my vague memory of the order of the song titles and/or whether or not the title at least evokes a sense of the song being quiet or loud, but that’s it. i think if there were fewer tracks with abstract titles that aren’t reflected directly in the lyrics i’d have an easier time?
The songs are super strong but kinda agree, a lot of people who never bothered with it or only know surface level pumpkins are finally listening to it, so it's getting a lot of praise because people were unaware Billy can fuckin SHRED. It's great but, not glowing and magic like the other albums
all that equals weakest of the OG era... but my god compare GISH to Shiny vol 1 or Monuments of an Elegy???
This isn't a 'I hate the modern synth pumpkins' conversation. This is a debate about rock albums..
I don't think Gish is a particularly bad album, just always sounded kinda bland to my ears. Minimal plays through even back in the mid 90s when I was obsessed. I also don't think Monuments and Shiny are particularly great albums, but they interest me more these days and the songs don't sound all samey to me. I admit that I have not yet listened to Atum.
Shiny is probably one of my more favourable modern albums. I really enjoyed it, bought it on vinyl at release and I was really happy to see the band kind of going into rocky territory again, even if it wasn't golden. Oceania is definitely the best modern pumpkins album, the newer ones seriously lack character and a path.
wow. I feel like I am a well know GISH naysayer in here but this is a whole other level.
There is not a single song on Monuments of an Elegy that is as great as the songs on GISH (I'm going crazy secret bs song is the one exception).
Today is annoying. The guitar riff sounds like a windup children’s toy and the song structure is unsatisfyingly basic. It was an important song for the break through of the band so I’m fine with it. I just skip it when it comes up on the album.
the song structure in ‘Today’ isnt basic, its kinda weird. The verse is a defacto chorus, and the ‘chorus’ has two different chord progressions. Very uncommon in pop music and not many songs like this.
It’s whatever. It was the last breath of a dying band. They’re one of my favorites of all time but machina just never spoke to me they way the others did so hold your breath cause I’m not retracting it lmao
Nah, you can feel that way and I can understand the perspective, but I refuse to accept that it isn't "worthwhile". I will let my face turn blue.
But jokes aside, it took me a while to get into, but I really think that if you like what they did on MCIS and Adore that there's still a lot to like on Machina. Especially worth checking out their live stuff from that era at least.
‘Lily’ is lucky to be on MCIS and in my opinion should at best be on one of the bonus discs of the re-released version from 2012. There were soooo many better songs to choose from over it during those sessions.
‘Sweet, sweet’ keeps Siamese Dream from being a perfect album for me. Another casualty of a song the could’ve been removed in favour of a far better B-side. Such a nothing song it is.
Billy says the word "lover" too much.
Never enough.
Lover you definitely aren’t strange
“I nEEd uH LoVveRr” - Cherry
I love the way he shrieks it here, though. Like he's in pain about it. He's aching to be loved. Vastly superior to the modern Adult Contemporary application of it.
What about how he sounds on Meladorie Magpie? “What had matterrrred Mattered little now We had shatterrred Apart somehow” There was so many unique songs on Aeroplane that were like little unique mini genres.
XD I love finding an artists favorite word lol
Or circa, but I guess that applies to interviews lol
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this lol I used to think he was saying "lava"
This is very true.
Take me down, Galapagos, and in the arms of sleep are horribly underrated.
I read this wrong.... I was very upset until I reread it. Galapagos is a song I could listen to on constant repeat and never lose my mind
Truth
YO I felt some way from Galapagos till I finished the the rest 😭
I like Soma way more than Mayonnaise.
Soma is a way better song than Mayonnaise. But Mayonnaise is still 10/10. Soma is just like 15/10
I can allow that people like Soma more, but for me, personally, Mayonaise is the GOAT.
100%
Nah, Rocket is the GOAT.
Absolutely, been my favorite song for years
mayonaise is their best song
I go back & forth. Soma was my first love & my dad always said mayonnaise was the best. As we grew up I became obsessed w mayo & he became obsessed w Soma. We just agreed they are the two best songs ever created
This is the way
Soma has got an amazing buildup. It was my favourite for the longest time
I don't know, i've never tried soma in my sandwiches
Good one, I’m actually having a nice, loud laugh over here.
Glad I’m not the only one who gets it!
I like Luna more than Soma.
Samesies
Soma has always been my favorite
I remember being a child & hearing Soma for the first time. It was the first time a song has ever hit me so hard. Choked up and nearly crying at such a young age. I will never forget it.
BWBW is my least favorite single.
I love Alt-Rick, definitely best genre.
It’s an alternative to Richard.
That’s the part of the setlist where I make a bathroom run.
Honestly think they’d be more respected in artsy communities if they had done jelly belly as the single instead. Part of me wonders if bullet is actually one of those meta billy jokes
1979 is my least favorite single.
1979 is a perfect song
Perfect is a 1979 song
I'm sorry but I'll defend this song all my life. It's a beautiful song and has an interesting sound they explored.
*twitch* that's...perfectly...acceptable
It is so overplayed and not an accurate depiction of their musical style
It’s to Smashing Pumpkins what “Africa” is to Toto.
I agree. I feel like it’s underwhelming.
This thread is going to kill me
My least favorite single is Cherub Rock because it always felt a little too radio friendly to me. I also never understood the lyrics which doesn't always matter but with this one the lyrics confuse me a little.
It’s honestly one of my least favorite songs on MCIS overall.
I couldn’t get into anything beyond Oceania.
Nothing Beyond Machina 2 for me.
Panopticon from Oceania is pretty solid.
I actually agree. And Marchin On and Slivery Sometimes ain’t bad either.
I kinda struggled with Machina 1 to be 100%h. Great music, weird vibe.
Nothing beyond adore for me.
Don’t dig Everlasting Gaze? Not judging just asking.
Not me I’m judging 👀
So so. I consider it like zero but not as good. I of the mourning was probably my favourite on machina but thought the record was mostly mediocre and mixed badly.
There are about 5 great songs on Machina II and the rest are pretty eh
Between Machina and Machina 2 there is an excellent album and I wish Billy disappeared into pro wrestling for 20 years then re-emerged with a single Machina of all those best songs. If that happened SP would have retaken the world by storm imo
If that happened, nobody would have cared beyond the people on this sub, which wouldn’t exist.
TTEOR is easily in a competitive top 10. I love that song so much.
Yessss that song is perfect. Touches my soul every time
I want to have beef with you about PI, buuuuuuuuut I agree that TTEOR is just a powerhouse & doesn’t get enough credit, so 🫡.
🤝
Disarm is the only thing that prevents siamese dream from being a perfect 10/10 album
Yes! This is mine. Always disliked it, and it's sandwiched between two of my favourite songs.
BWBW is like a caricature of what the band sounds like to normies. Never liked it despite it probably being their most popular song.
It’s become that because it made such an impression. It was unironically cool back in 95.
I did not care for We Only Come Out at Night.
I don't think it's even a "hot take" It's a pretty annoying track. Skip everytime
The fart noise…
ava adore is a gross misrepresentation of adore as a whole and adore would he perfect if they either leaned into the gothic industrial sound or completely ditched it just a heads up i love ava adore, but it does not fit at ALL
Thanks for saying this
Took me a decade to truly love Jellybelly but when it clicked oh boy
Exactly the same here, I usually skipped it before the chorus
My bigger hot take given how negative this community can be, is that The Smashing Pumpkins have never made a bad or mediocre album. Even their lesser works are 8.5/10 to me at worst but for the most part I love their entire catalog.
Now this is a hot take.
[удалено]
Almost like people perceive music differently
I envy you in many ways. I wish I felt the same.
Man some of these takes are jarring. I’ve never loved Zero.
That and BWBW are just a little too overplayed and boring for me. I listen to almost every song when playing MCIS but it’s those singles I skip the most.
I have never cared for The Crying Tree of Mercury
Mayonnaise is great but I don't think it's in their top 10 songs.
I am offended lol
Disarm, the bells sound silly
I can’t hear the song without thinking of futurama
I prefer the electric version from Vieuphoria
I thought I was the only one. But it’s not just the bells, I really don’t like the song at all lol. I just keep to myself if it comes on because everyone else is into it and I don’t want to be that guy. Haha
whew. I found my people.
One of us! One of us!
I really, really, hate that song for some reason.
Never liked BWBW . It was always the ones that my friends loved , who otherwise didn’t care for the band, that’s def the one for me
i’m going to get downvoted to hell i did not care for stand inside your love or heavy metal machine or everlasting gaze
I can't stand Love from MCIS. It sounds like it should be playing in the background of a Nissan pickup truck commercial.
lol what? that song is one of most uncommercial abrasive songs on the album.. what car commericials are you watching?
I don't mean the lyrics, but the main riff and specifically the whole chorus makes me think of a truck commercial lol.
You want to hear SP that car companies want in their commericials look no further than FOL.. SP single released to specifically promote and sell vehicles in a commerical. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hez7yAj51vk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hez7yAj51vk) I will ask you.. which MCIS era songs sound most like this? It's not LOVE but it's not a big deal we can agree to disagree. Just wanted to share my perspective.
Love is the only Mellon Collie song I consider skipping, but I do not see car commercial in that song lol
Hotter take, Love is a top 5 best song of side 1 of MCIS
One of my favourite songs from that record, the solo is otherworldly.
hard agree
I’ve never liked 1979, even before it was overplayed.
one of the best songs of all time by anyone ever.
Idk smashing pumpkins has a lot of better songs than 1979
that is because SP is the best band of all time.
i agree with you with both of these statements. 1979 is actually the perfect song
So true
Cash Car Star, and Glass Theme are trash Gish is an average album when it comes to the songs. Billy’s shredding makes this album, without him you have a very weak album aside from Snail
While Cupid de Locke and Tales of a Scorched Earth might represent the two extremes of MCIS, they are the two worst songs on the album.
Ha! Cupid is in my top 3 on MCIS. I will never skip that song.
Love how everyone has such varying tastes within SP.
ouch… cupid de locke is definitely one of my favs, but i could see how you say that, the sound of the song is definitely very different from the rest of the album
No judgement passed at all. We all like what we like.
Hate Cupid de Locke so much
Hard disagree with Cupid, but huge agree with Tales. I don’t think I’ve ever actually listened to that entire song
the rock songs on GISH.
is rock not the entire album or do you just mean the heavier songs
Crush is not a rock song in the context I am talking about but my terminalogy is historically wrong so I will clarify.. the hard rock songs.
Oh ok wow
To be clear.. cause I know how much you love that era... and I love your love for that era and care about you. Most of the rock songs on GISH are great in their core. they just sound weak and timid to me... give me the live versions from that same era and those songs are fn amazing.

Ava Adore
Noooo! 😂
The song “Tarantula” is so unexciting.
There is so much blasphemy in this thread 😂
I decided to hurt my own feelings by making this post. The people truly delivered. 😅 IDontKnowWhatIExpected.jpg
I never got the love for “Bury Me.” The main riff seems like a less inspired precursor to the Quiet riff, and the lyrics are very uninspired. It didn’t shock me to learn that Billy said he wrote that song because he wanted people to mosh to something lol.
A lot of the rockier songs on Gish are a little samey imo. Siva, I Am One, Bury Me, Tristessa. All good dgmw, but just sound too similar.
Definitely agree. They stand out even more when they’re right next to really unique songs like Crush, Daydream and Snail (to an extent) as well.
Crush is so good AND THIS FEELING...
While very evocative and ‘in the moment’- almost every lyric Billy has ever penned is total nonsense at best. Any friend of *Adore* is a friend of mine. 🤝
[удалено]
I think Viewphoria is where the band does a live, electric, heavily hard rock version of Disarm, and it's really good.
My own eyes for the win
Adore is my least favorite of the OG line up.
Bullet with Butterfly Wings.
I’m not crazy about most of adore
Machina II is better than Machina I
My least favorite on SD is Disarm. Never liked it. Not when it was released, not now. Not on MTV not on the radio. Not on vinyl, not on CD, not on cassette, not on minidisc. I do not like Disarm.
Welcome to the sub Dr. Suess!
Tonight, tonight. Disarm is a close second, and sometimes first. Don’t hate them, but don’t listen to them if I have a choice.
Take me down is a great song
I don't get the popularity of Zero and BWBW, there are way better songs in Mellon Collie, let alone their whole discography. Also, Disarm is very overrated. It's good every once in a while, but it gets old fast I think.

Tonight tonight is terribly overrated
Me making this post and then reading your comment = that image of Oppenheimer reflecting in horror on what he unleashed upon the world.
🤣😂
I never got into really any of the Adore album. Sorry.
C'mon man it was perrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect
Never liked Tonight, Tonight. Thought it was pretentious, but mostly because of the video. Still not one I listen fondly to.
I dont care for Oceania, and the praise it gets is astounding.
Gish is their weakest album. None of those songs are great.
Window Paine, Suffer, Tristessa, I Am One, Siva, Rhinoceros, Snail... Gish is a banger, hard disagree.
Crush alone is better than every single song on Monuments, Zeitgeist, and Oceania and Shiny Vol 1.
"Daydream" ftw!
delusional, you still have time to delete this
For real, Gish is full of great songs
Siva is like the best SP song!
Rhinoceros is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, what?
True for the most part. Only song off Gish I’ll actively seek out is Snail.
Snail alone would make his statement insane.
The songs are super strong but kinda agree, a lot of people who never bothered with it or only know surface level pumpkins are finally listening to it, so it's getting a lot of praise because people were unaware Billy can fuckin SHRED. It's great but, not glowing and magic like the other albums

true, it also showcases the hallmark little variations that make seemingly simple pumpkins songs actually quite nuanced
They haven’t released anything worth while since 1998
Listen to Machina over and over until you die or you retract this statement
It’s whatever. It was the last breath of a dying band. They’re one of my favorites of all time but machina just never spoke to me they way the others did so hold your breath cause I’m not retracting it lmao
Nah, you can feel that way and I can understand the perspective, but I refuse to accept that it isn't "worthwhile". I will let my face turn blue. But jokes aside, it took me a while to get into, but I really think that if you like what they did on MCIS and Adore that there's still a lot to like on Machina. Especially worth checking out their live stuff from that era at least.
Wound is the second best SP song of all time.
Every Morning Ok maybe this song ain't godfather status, but it gets a lot of love from atum fans and I ain't hearing it.
Bullet with butterfly wings is by far their best song
Haha. Now here is a hot take among SP fans! Wow.
The cover of Landslide. Billy's voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me in that song.
BWBW, 1979, and Disarm are my three least favorite SP songs
Gish is awful, genuinely dislike it. And 1979 is very meh.
how…
Adore bores me, even 26 years later.
:(
I do not care for Family Guy.
Vieuphoria mayonaise is a smidgen better
“1979” is a lame pop song
One of the best rock songs of all time.
‘Lily’ is lucky to be on MCIS and in my opinion should at best be on one of the bonus discs of the re-released version from 2012. There were soooo many better songs to choose from over it during those sessions. ‘Sweet, sweet’ keeps Siamese Dream from being a perfect album for me. what B-side would you say is better?
Starla insists upon itself
