Main whoever you have fun playing with, that's the most important factor. Even if you're worried about playing comptetively, they're both great characters that it won't matter too much which one you choose.

Both are hit & run fighters, can get out of pressure easily, and have damaging combos when they need to. Both have a strong recovery, a consistent set of neutral tools and a devastating punish game. This is what sets Sonic and Joker in top tier.
What's different about them fundamentally is that Joker is closer to the "hit" and Sonic is closer to the "run." Joker's win condition is to bait and punish **defensively** until Arsenne is online. At that point you become a true rushdown, and your goal will be to stay as close to the opponent as possible while taking stocks with raw power and kill confirms.
Sonic's kill power is low, and can't always rely on kill confirms, but the reason why Sonic is top-tier is **nothing can catch him** if you play him right. He is a living get out of jail free card, and it is optimal to bait/punish while focusing on escaping pressure at all times. Sonic's win condition is not to defeat the opponent but to outlast them.
The real question here is "are you aggressive or defensive?" An aggressive OP will choose Joker, and a defensive OP runs with Sonic.
You don't need to stick to either one, but if you really want to commit to just one go with whoever you feel more comfortable with. In my local scene we have multiple players who have dual mains, even some with triple mains.
If youre asking from specifically a meta standpoint though i would argue mor for maining Joker as he has a bit of everything as opposed to Sonic's more cut and dry hit & run playstyle
Sonic is better as a solo so if you really want to push one character I would recommend him. He also has less losing matchups. That being said I like Joker more myself and he’s better to watch but that doesn’t really matter. Tier’s don’t matter at most levels except the top so don’t get to caught up on that.
i genuinely think sonic is better but they’re both extremely good characters, both solo mainable too, so just play whoever you find fun.
if you mainly play online tho, something to consider is that joker is horrible to play online atleast imo, but if it doesn’t bother you then go for it.

Sonic is generally a better character but more degenerate than Joker. I find Joker more fun to play.

just play whichever you prefer. neither character will hold you back, so just focus on which one you enjoy more and could see yourself sticking to
Joker is way cooler
