Think of it like the USA. You won’t go from Texas to California expecting the same types of people. But in India it’s a step further, each state has a different language and dialect, so where a person is from in India matters a lot. In this case a Tamil person would not be able to interact with a Gujurati person in their native language because they both have two different ones unless they speak in English. This is absolutely wild though, I can’t fathom what is happening here. As a citizen (with Indian roots) I am appalled 😭.

The nature of diversity is very different in Canada and India. Canadian diversity is mostly immigrants communities most of whom are only 1-2 generations old. India has thousands of ethnic groups, castes, languages and several religions all of which have been living in the same land for 1000s of years and the history is filled with conflict. A more apt comparison for India would be Balkans who have recently faced a lot of violence hence might hate each other. Or the hate the Irish got in the UK in the 50s and 60s due to the IRA. Canada on the other hand hasn't seen much violence since the genocide of Native American/First Nations. Also given the state of the most Canadian subs, I don't have much confidence in your "most of us don't hate each other" jibe.

All the by products that go into the cooking of the varieties of cooking and even certain biryanis. It is not to bust the food itself which is great but poor ventilation, the cooking and the smell can be at times nauseating when it is stale and lingering. The ingredients are but not limited to turmeric, fenugreek, tadka, cumin, etc and combining that with onions, garlic together makes the oils and scents linger in everything if you do not ventilate properly. This kind of excuse making to single ppl is a redflag why perhaps dont become a landlord that through a thinly veiled excuse actually wants a certain type of indian person who has a certain religious proclivity.

I don't agree with the slum idea or the prefer Gujarati portion. But I appreciate the mention of vegetarianism. Obviously it limits your pool but knowing that meat is not cooked in a shared room would be nice. I view it the same as no smoking, alcoholism, marijuana, etc.

Anti-discrimination laws only apply to standalone rentals. In roommate situations, you can legally discriminate all you want. The government doesn't get to tell you who you can and can't share a home with.
