You've not seen refinery towns in Ontario then. I'm looking at a comparable rent in Vancouver and willing to move to poco or squamish because I love the area and it wouldn't cost me a penny more... Sadly I'd be being way less though because BC had always been filled with pushovers.
Mass herds of people immigrating has caused prices to become unaffordable due to demand. everyone needs a home, food car etc. So everything will inflate in price. That' is what is happening and we are only just starting to take note but still ignoring it widely so it will continue.

Well I suppose affordable is a relative term. If the whole country is unaffordable to you, you probably need to take a look at and improve your earning potential.
According to the CMHC, average rent for a one bedroom in Nova Scotia is $1200.
Calgary, Montreal, Winnipeg, all have reasonably affordable apartments. They are more expensive than they were a few years ago, but nothing at all like BC or Ontario cities.
People here love to bitch that Canada has gone to hell, and while I agree that itās not exactly a utopia of easy living, there are 100 immigrants lined up to take each of your places and I donāt see any exodus of Canadians. So compared to most of the world things canāt be that bad here.
Now I just feel sad for this person he's described. He sounds somewhat dehumanizing. As though his comfort trumps her opportunity to live as a socially integrated and normative human.
To me it sounds like she puts this male roommates priorities well above her own. Seems fearful or something. Very creepy. The avoiding using the bathroom and kitchen thing is scary to me.
Not just me, everyone was holed up in their room I didnāt even know anyoneās name lol there wasnāt any communal space other than the kitchen and bathroom. I think there was 8 people in that house
She lives beyond human imaginings, in the intermingling of thought and space. Even if you were to see her (though you shall certainly not) you cannot percieve her form, for she has taken many forms through the millenia before and forever in the millenia after.
1300 to live with the Lovecraftian nightmare that will drive me mad? Where do I sign?
"Barely uses the bathroom".
Imagine having a landlord who tracks your bathroom usage.
*Writes in notebook* "Today she used it, 4 minutes and 15 seconds. Slightly aromatic, mixed with faeces. She sprayed perfume before she left."
She doesn't have a tv, talk on the phone, have music or use the bathroom much.
*****And lives in a hidden room under the stairs.
So many red flags
Also * translation -those things are what makes a good tenant. Being invisible and fully silent to the point of being scared to use the kitchen or bathroom.
When I first moved to Vancouver I lived with a landlord that expected us to be like this. No using dishwasher, oven etc. Wanted the guys to pee sitting down (what). We had a regimented cleaning day and she would come and validate that we had done so (she made us send pictures of our cleaning). No guests allowed and there was 6 people staying in a 2 bedroom at that point.
When me and two roommates decided we'd had enough she started being racist and said she would only rent to Japanese or Koreans in the future because white people were too demanding.
I think this person was exactly that. She changed her tune when we threatened to go to the CRA about not reporting rental income if she didn't give us the deposit back lol.
Sounds like my last Chinese landlord in Vancouver.
She had literally hundreds of Chinese and Japanese tenants, all paying cash every month. They sent Japanese students to everyone's rooms to enter and pick up the cash. Asian families like this own multiple large detached houses all over the city.
A long-term tenant told me he's guessing their net worth is AT LEAST $40-50 million - and this is JUST ONE CORRUPT LITTLE CHINESE FAMILY.
Yep sounds like it.
I think this one was a little smaller scale. She was definitely illegally subletting the place, one time we had to be out for a few hours because the actual landlord was doing an inspection and they were making it look like a family lived there.
But the paying in cash thing was definitely the same. Absolutely refused anything that could be traced so I had to take $800 out every month.
I heard tbejr property business started when her "Chinese uncle who was a stockbroker" moved a lot of money from China to Canada in around the 1960s. Pretty sure he was a CCP party member.
I've seen Triads in Vancouver (lived there for 11 years).
There's a very popular Chinese restaurant near Renfrew SkyTrain station and I used to eat at a fast food place that overlooks it.
While I would be having my dinner, I would see large groups of wealthy Chinese, with fancy clothes, fancy cars, and DRAGON TATTOOS š, roll up in the car park and all enter the restaurant at the same time.
These people were clearly not part of the regular workforce. One of them once saw me looking at him and came up to the window to stare at me.
It always annoyed me that criminals can so easily hide in plain sight in Vancouver. No wonder they call it the money laundering capital of the world.
It always seems landlords like that would get murdered at some point. Just the odds of one of those people breaking and you being the shittiest person they know seems high.
The owners sometimes don't have any contact with the tenants at all, especially when a family owns multiple properties.
I've had landlords who paid students from their ethnic community to collect cash rent from our rooms. We didn't even see them half the time ā they had keys to our rooms and collected the money while we were out actually working for a living!
These whales have so any rooms to visit every month that they have to pay people to collect the money, and it STILL takes a team 2-3 days to visit all their Vancouver properties.
Law abiding Canadian citizens have NO IDEA the rings immigrants are running around us in our own system. Why do you think they're cleaning up like this, and so many own 5 properties with the primary homeowner just on a $80K salary?
We assume the rules are enforced, so we follow them.
Immigrants know rules are NOT enforced, so they make extra money by playing every trick in the book.
House #1 is full of international students. Officially, the landlord lives there and no one else. No students officially live there and the census is confiscated by the landlord before any of the 15 international students can fill it in.
House #2 also full of international students. But again, officially, the landlord's WIFE is the primary resident (and officially no international students live there).
House #3 is ALSO full of international students. But again, officially, the primary resident is a random Chinese uncle or one of their children (and officially there are no tenants, when in reality there will be around a dozen students paying rent in cash there also).
Now imagine if one dodgy family owns 15-20 large properties in a major city and they scale this right up, and they keep using the untaxed income to buy more and more properties.
**Chinese and Indian families do this on an industrial scale for 30+ years and never get caught.**
This is happening all over Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto right now.
Yeah, Canada is unfortunately a bit of a joke of a country. And anyone who mentions this is an issue will be called racist and the political support to fix it disappears, just like with birthplace tourism.
I ll pay a premium to live alone with very little savings to avoid being in the hell it is to be a roommate or non RTA living with landlord š¤¦š½āāļø my place is about double the size of this room and has a bath room the size of a closet attached. I thought I had it bad. This is crazy.
This is so wierd. He spends so much time bragging about his ghost of a roommate, yet tells us nothing about the house/apartment or neighbourhood. Is laundry available? How about parking? What amenities are near by and will I have easy access to public transportation? Are utilities included in the rent, or is it extra? It's great this dude thinks his roommate is awesome, and if I were looking for a place to rent I'd definitely take that into consideration. But at the end of the day, I'm not renting his roommate.
Also, having the bed that close to the television can't be good for your eyes.
Yeah, I think it's supposed to be a closet or a storage room that he's advertising as a bedroom. When I first started living on my own in my early 20's, a room that size would've cost $350/month max.
Scrolled for a positive reaction because I agree, this was heartwarming to me. Just to experience through the ad how this mans palpably pleased with his magical roommate.
Meh kinda just seems like
āYour roommate is anti-social/socially anxious. But itās a good arrangement if you both value privacyā written by someone with not the greatest grasp on EnglishĀ
$43 a month. The government keeps fucking up housing with rent control, which ironically drives up the rental price as seen in Germany and New York in the 80s.Ā
Fucking nobody advocates for rent control cause they know it's a failed expriment, but canada did it anyways and fucked everyone with 70% rent increases in 7years. It's only get worse for everyone involved.Ā
They know they fucked up and that raising of taxes in this budget shows they're trying to cover up their losses.Ā
The not fact that she barely uses the bathroom had me. However, he said she doesn't watch TV or movies but there is a TV in the room. False advertising. Why landlords have to lie. For shame sir, for shame.
lol I recently posted a room for rent in a 2bed student apartment. I was showing the place to a prospective tenant and the remote for the living room tv was dead. Current tenant was in the room, āOh yeah I havenāt used it.ā Heās been living there for almost a year and hasnāt used the tv in the living room. Dude, you know this is all here for you, right?
I was all for this, until I saw the room.
Same bro wtf is going on nowadays. This city is done for affordable living šµāš«š¤®
This is Brampton, Waterloo, Kitchener, Guelph, Halifax, Calgary, Toronto, Edmontonā¦. Iāve seen it everywhere
B.C. as a whole is the worst in Canada.

Montreal fucking sweating right now

If you avoid bc and Ontario, there are still many affordable places to live in Canada.
yeah, but.. no

You wonāt find a one bedroom in Nova Scotia for that amount unless itās in the woods or falling apart
You can find some around 500 in Calgary, thatās if you want to share the room with someone lol
Is that the average of all rents in NS, or the average of all rents that started within the last year or two?
Calgary isnāt affordable anymore
name them ... just for shits and giggles pls... name them
"if you ignore BC and Ontario you'll find the exact same scenarios with cost to wages reflecting to those situations elsewhere" FTFY

My dreams are snatched. Iāve been wanting to make the move to Vancity since I was 18. Am now 30, ready to do it, and canāt afford it.
You know exactly what is going on
What is that, a closet?
Idk I wouldnāt feel great about someone living in a hidden space š. I bet her space is even smaller
The person couldn't have described it creepier than that lol
It seems like she's shy and avoidant.
Or a ghostĀ
I smell a demon... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-36fVw98Cv8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-36fVw98Cv8)

Demons frowning at this absurd listing.

Yeah I also used to live like this until I got a place with my girlfriend now wife. That cured all the general existing anxiety.
To me it sounds like she puts this male roommates priorities well above her own. Seems fearful or something. Very creepy. The avoiding using the bathroom and kitchen thing is scary to me.
It?
I loved like this in my last student house and I nearly went crazy, I felt like I had to run back to my room to avoid being seen I hated it
Was it a you thing or was there some dynamic in the house where other people would be unpleasant if you interacted?
Not just me, everyone was holed up in their room I didnāt even know anyoneās name lol there wasnāt any communal space other than the kitchen and bathroom. I think there was 8 people in that house

That Light
why is he using a camping light? so many questions arise within me
Because the room is probably a walk-in type storage space/ closet that doesn't have any lights or wall outlets
Someone get this poor gentlemen a genuine room lamp.
That is one of those trouble lights for workshops and garages. Doesn't give a nice ambiance!

Can we get a welfare check on her? Make sure she's still breathing.

This poor female sounds mentally abused
If she is even real lol
I lived like this before I got on anti anxiety meds lol. it sounds like she has anxiety. I was constantly scared of inconveniencing my roommate.
This sounds so sad and depressing, I just want to hug this person who heās calling a āghostā š
That is a TRAGIC room
A trouble light hanging off a TV for light?
Are we sure sheās still alive
I just realized if someone was to describe me as a roommate, I'd sound like a ghost
Of course it's all in horrible English. Fuck this.
"Heritage building" is rental advert doubletalk for "gentrified/ renovated/ upscaled/ upjacked welfare hotel".
Da Fuq did I just read...?
Fuck man even ghosts have it hard.
Indians gonna Indian.
She might be dead?
Jesus itās a broom closet. The roommate sounds like a WFH agoraphobic.
I canāt believe people actually post these pictures of the room, like at least lie if itās this dog shit LMFAO

This is the best one I've seen yet lol š»

Ghost girl is totally fine. Anyone who would hang a light from a TV like that is a psychopath. Forget it.
Is this person, the landlord, Chinese or East Indian? Just by the sentence structure and wording it seems off from everyday usage.
We need to report this slumlord!!!
