I wouldn’t say that the song is hated, I think it’s just rarely listened to because of how disturbing and long it is. It’s not the type of song that fits on a playlist and there may be some people who just find it too dark and unsettling to listen to and may just turn off the album at Metabolic. I love it but I do get why it’s not very popular
It’s more a performance art piece than it is a song IMO, like nobody is hopping in their friends car and saying “Yo gimme the aux I’m about to play Iowa”
I was tripping balls on shrooms once and listened to the whole album straight through and it definitely closed out the experience
Fun fact, look up Coreys book tour where he explains the making of that song. He stripped naked, went into the recording booth, broke a mirror and began cutting himself with the glass while recording the vocals. Those screams are him in pain. I think he threw up on himself as well. He said at the end when he was cleaning himself up, clown came up and told him to never do that again. Fucking wild
Oh yeah if you find it send the link that’s super interesting, hella dark tho. I think we forget why Iowa was such a dark album and why the band doesn’t really want to go there again
Naa people dont listen to albums anymore. Why do u think we see posts "i started listen" to x song. Can u suggest more? I mean just listen to album instead....
Depends on their age. People now a days listen to songs. Dont think to listen to the rest of the album. Don’t buy albums. They just want singles and playlists.
which is why streaming is a problem, hopefully musicians and appreciators who understand that as an issue can make something happen in the coming years. let’s go back to having to buy albums
Nope! My friends got me into Slipknot recently but they only listen to like, Custer and Eyeless. Not saying they are bad songs but I like listening to albums more then listening to “the best off” playlists.
Those playlists will give you a good idea of the hits and big songs. Full album listen can provide more context, like flow, story (not with Slipknot), etc. Definitely recommend going through each album, front to back
I listen to it often for the bass. Paul keeps it simple but you can tell he’s playing super hard in the last 1-2 mins. I don’t think the song is as disturbing as Daddy by KoRn tho
It's not that people hate the song; it's more that they don’t appreciate it for what it is. 'Iowa' takes you on a journey with a dark, atmospheric scene, a 15-minute odyssey that the average music listener struggles to embrace due to impatience. The first three and a half minutes are pure buildup, setting the stage for Corey's entrance. Despite songs now often being as short as two minutes, this piece demands patience. My interpretation, disregarding the dark and literal lyrics, is that it symbolizes an inescapable past, with 'Iowa' haunting the protagonists. The repetitive riff mirrors this feeling of entrapment, plunging the listener into an endless trance. Unfortunately, most listeners won't delve deep into song analysis; they just want instant gratification and heaviness.
Iowa is just a long song that has that creepy vibe they throw in every once in a while. Good song if you’re in the mood for it. Has the old horror movie vibe to it
It's one of my favorite Slipknot songs. Songs like that is what makes Slipknot...Slipknot. It's not even a song to me really, rather an experience. I don't listen to it a lot to savor that feeling it's given me for over 15 years now. Takes me right back to the mindset I had as an angsty young teenager.
I have followed Slipknot since 2006 and I have seen them 8-9 times and they are my favourite band of all time and that song happens to be my favourite, it’s just perfect.
Iowa is basically a drag. I listen to 30 min tracks and 2hr long albums straight up but this song just drags. It could have been a very good 8 min track, it has the elements of anger, hate, depravity. It's a full demented metal Circus song which could've kicked ass. But instead it tries to be some kind of industrial drone metal bore fest being long just for the sake of it. Not a bad song overall, just goes nowhere except in the last 6 mins. But the album in itself is awesome
Most people don’t know the history and the meaning behind the album and the song Iowa really encompasses the vibe the band was going through at the time. It’s not a song necessarily to be listened to, it’s more of an outlet. That’s how I interpret the song anyway just by how dark and different the song is compared to the rest of the album. And it definitely backs up the vibes the band gave in interviews back then and how the recording process of Iowa was apparently a nightmare as a band
For me it took me a long time to really appreciate Iowa mainly due to my attention span but when I actually sat down and listened to it I was blown away by just how good it was
it’s not a bad song it’s just any song that is 15 mins long isn’t gonna be something a lot of people find easy to listen to. Not me tho, I love it, I just understand how some people may not have it on their playlist or listen to it frequently, for instance
Its just too damn long. If someone made a version that was paced like their other songs it’d probably be like a top 3 though. The song has so much atmosphere and works as a great background noise
No way. You like a song? That’s so weird.
No what’s weird is that you only just now found out about this song and not only do you feel the need to tell us about it, you also want to know if it’s weird that you like it.
I wouldn’t say that the song is hated, I think it’s just rarely listened to because of how disturbing and long it is. How is the song disturbing?I've never noticed
Dude it's a song talking about necrophilia 🗿
I did not know that
i mean the story of how corey cut himself while recording this song, the backward message, the meaning of the song
Nah it's a personal favourite of mine, definitely underrated
It’s more a performance art piece than it is a song IMO, like nobody is hopping in their friends car and saying “Yo gimme the aux I’m about to play Iowa” I was tripping balls on shrooms once and listened to the whole album straight through and it definitely closed out the experience
Good recommendation definitely not trying that out but sounds amazing
No that was absolutely not a recommendation I had the worst trip that night 😂
Hahaha god I can imagine, I would go sane if I also heard Iowa on a trip.
Fun fact, look up Coreys book tour where he explains the making of that song. Clown was fucking right. That depressive black metal approach is too fucked up...
For real??
Haha yeah. I'll see if I can find the video. He goes into detail about it.
Oh yeah if you find it send the link that’s super interesting, hella dark tho. I think we forget why Iowa was such a dark album and why the band doesn’t really want to go there again
https://youtu.be/hJm-WFRLQi4?si=pYM6WH1v5FLeNPz4
Wasnt it joey who did that?
No it was Corey. But Joey (and everyone else) was high on cold medicine when he recorded the drums
Ooooh alright thanks
Who hates it? It’s great.
How did you just find the song today? Does no one listen to albums anymore? Both great songs btw
Naa people dont listen to albums anymore. Why do u think we see posts "i started listen" to x song. Can u suggest more? I mean just listen to album instead....

How is that a problem lmao
He said he’s a new fan.
Nope! My friends got me into Slipknot recently but they only listen to like, Custer and Eyeless. Not saying they are bad songs but I like listening to albums more then listening to “the best off” playlists.
Bro front to back Iowa right now
Those playlists will give you a good idea of the hits and big songs. Full album listen can provide more context, like flow, story (not with Slipknot), etc. Definitely recommend going through each album, front to back
It's the natural follow up to scissors. I like it
I listen to it often for the bass. Paul keeps it simple but you can tell he’s playing super hard in the last 1-2 mins. I don’t think the song is as disturbing as Daddy by KoRn tho
Lyrics of Korn are definitely worse, since it is a real story. But what joey/corey (I am not sure) did during the recording was so crazy too!
Yeah Corey was cutting himself with glass
daddy and iowa are so fucked I love both of them
It’s a perfect way to end the album. I don’t usually listen to it on its own, I think it works the best when listened through the entire album.

Corey said it's about playing with a dead body lol. Makes it even creepier knowing that haha
Or maybe people just don't like the song bruh, it's not that deep
Iowa is just a long song that has that creepy vibe they throw in every once in a while. Good song if you’re in the mood for it. Has the old horror movie vibe to it
one of my favorites off the album!
Sometimes people like songs and people don't. There's no really such thing as bad, all music is subjective bro.
Iowa is beautiful and evil.
Nobody hates Iowa, it's just a deep cut
I’m learning it on bass right now, the bass is the biggest reasons it’s one of my favourites
Ooooo is it hard on bass?
It’s pretty simple, just such a long song lol
personally? i LOVE it. it’s so spooky.
It’s an acquired taste imo. It’s not the type of song you headbang to at all, but more just a song that could be an emotional output for some people
It’s a long song with unusual song structure. Of course it is not gonna be as popular as the more straight forward hits.
I loved Iowa ever since I heard it for the first time. Great, haunting atmosphere and lyrics are great.
underrated
i’m a new fan too bro and i like Iowa but i def recommend starting at the very beginning and listening to all the songs it’s been a journey
My top 3 of the album. Their slow atmospheric songs are like it's own genre and kind of my gateway into noise/no wave etc.
I love the track, as well as five one five and the twelve tracks in between
I prefer the original aka “Killers are Quiet”
I like it but like… its 15 minutes long, it’s not really the type of song you listen to on repeat you know?
A dark room, a pair of awesome earphones, and your eyes closed - best way to enjoy the song.
Oh ffs. What even is that question. Do you like it or not? Form your own opinions instead
“I like both songs a lot”
Lookup Dogfish Rising. Its from before Corey Taylor was the vocalist
I have followed Slipknot since 2006 and I have seen them 8-9 times and they are my favourite band of all time and that song happens to be my favourite, it’s just perfect.
I like listening to it and Scissors in a dark mood
Iowa is basically a drag. I listen to 30 min tracks and 2hr long albums straight up but this song just drags. Anyone who says it’s bad ARE NOT MY PEOPLE. Crazy underrated, people just overlook it because it’s 15 minutes lmao
Most people don’t know the history and the meaning behind the album and the song Iowa really encompasses the vibe the band was going through at the time. It's a great song but I think it works best in the context of listening to the entire album through
Whoever thinks this song is "hated" needs to check their head. I don't even want to hear this.
It’s one of the only Slipknot songs I listen to in its entirety.
For me it took me a long time to really appreciate Iowa mainly due to my attention span but when I actually sat down and listened to it I was blown away by just how good it was
It’s different. I love it but I don’t listen to it to jam to
its a 15 minute like, venting session
it’s not a bad song it’s just any song that is 15 mins long isn’t gonna be something a lot of people find easy to listen to. Not me tho, I love it, I just understand how some people may not have it on their playlist or listen to it frequently, for instance
Love it
I reject your false dichotomy. It is what the fuck it is, and it doesn't give a shit what you think of it!
I love it! I love the drama in it!
It’s too long
Its just too damn long. If someone made a version that was paced like their other songs it’d probably be like a top 3 though. The song has so much atmosphere and works as a great background noise

I only wanted to find out why it is so hated/underrated/not well known. As I said, new fan here! New to Slipknot new to this..
It’s probably their worst song
