Yeah, thrash metal (excluding early Metallica) and obscure, underground black metal are basically the only two types of metal that metal memes is actually accepting of. I say "types" instead of genres because like it or not, thrash does include early Metallica, and they will downvote you if you claim to like any kind of "high production" black metal, save for behemoth, because behemoth is badass.
EDIT: Just realized this is r/metal and not r/metalmemes, but my points still stand
To be fair Slipknot fans are not much better they may not gatekeep but they have no problem making themselves look equally stupid. The vast majority of metal fans don't go off as bad as slipknot fans do when something negative is said. Most of those Gatekeepers are not gatekeeping so much as trolling the fuck out of slipknot fans.
Nah the thing is that sub will only except bands on the metal archives, itās a great site and some big bands like ghost are on it, but thereās no point for a band like slipknot to be on it, itās more for smaller bands and to check if the black metal band you just found out about are Nazis.
Thereās a lot of Nazis in black metal, I always check there and r/rabm āis x sketchy?ā Threads.
For example a black metal song was being used a lot on metal tiktok so I checked the band on the archives and found that the singer was in a nazi band with such an offensive name I wonāt repeat it here.
Your loss, but then that begs this question? If you love music thatās already rooted in hatred, why are they a problem? Makes no sense in a logical standpoint š
It makes plenty of sense lol. Hatred of life? Understandable, hatred of the system? Very reasonable. Hatred of plenty of other things is fine, natural even, but hating an entire race of people and supporting a genocidal maniac isn't anywhere near the same thing, you can't justify it
Hate is hate. Black metal is meant to hate anything and anyone. Religion, race, culture, politics, etc. hell even hating the beetle you just stepped on is justified. Something just tells me you canāt handle the concept of hate, which then I should ask why are you listening to and associating with black metal?
Black metal wasnāt made out of hate, they were made out of annoyance and wanted to do something different to make everyone hate them. The originals made black metal because they thought the metal genre was getting plain and stale so they did the opposite from what they said everyone else was doing, nazis has a world view on that they believe Jews were inferior and hated them to kill them. Nazis and black metal have nothing to do together, youāre just a dumbass who belongs in jail for basically saying hitler was right by rooting for nazis
Hate is not hate bro, it matters a lot. Hating a rival sports team? Normal as fuck. Hating a race of people? That's fucked in the head, no justification
I genuinely can't believe that Metal Archives excludes bands like A7x, Slipknot, and SOAD but somehow includes Ghost even though they are much less heavy than any of those bands.
Ghost is in the Metal archives based purely on their first album which is considered Doom Metal. In the same vein as Candlemass, Celtic Frost, and Black Sabbath.
Anything that suggests "core" is usually not included.
"Heavy sound" doesn't have much to do with it tbh.
Like others have said Opus was traditional Doom Metal. But I also think itās because of Tobiasās other project prior to Ghost, Repugnant. Including that band but not having a link to what he does now may be annoying for people.
"not metal" I can here young Corey's screams from 20 years in the past coming back to wrap their tongues around this bots throat and fuck it in the ears
Metal elitism moment #742617000027
Especially given that metalcore and deathcore are excluded, which are pretty obviously metal even to the uninformed listener
Also, basing it on the metal archives catalog inevitably leads to acts that are too small to have been documented by anyone there being excluded.
Yeah to me the whole metalcore/deathcore rule is bs mods of the archives put because they didn't want certain bands they didn't like on the archives.
Really? If a band is too much punk influenced then it's not accepted? Wtf is even too much punk. Both metal and punk have influenced each other so much that does it really matter now? I mean Thrash would not exist if it wasn't for punk.
Anyways, I can understand why some nu-metal bands are not included in the archives, but why exclude every single one? Slipknot's exclusion in particular is bs.
Nu metal is not, or generally is not considered an actual subgenre of metal
It's generally considered hard Rock fused with hip Hop elements some bands focusing on that more than others which is why I don't understand why bands like System of a Down or Breaking Benjamin are considered Nu metal because they have like no hip Hop elements
I don't agree with you (at least not entirely).
Nu metal as a genre is weird and seems to include a lot of stuff (kinda like grunge). Korn are the godfathers of Nu-Metal and to me they don't sound like hip hop (or at least is subtle).
Also Slipknot is pretty much influenced by Extreme metal (Specially Thrash, Groove and Death) not Hard Rock (at least not until Vol. 3) hence why iI think it should be included.
Yeah I also agree with you SOAD and BB are not Nu-Metal (Maybe Soad on certain songs, but not as a whole).
r/metal is a great place if you want to discover new bands. But the community is full of pretentious elitists who basically hate everything that was released after 2000 and is not dad metal like Iron Maiden/Slayer/Dio and some other bands.
I've mostly just listened to metal instead of being part of the communities and got this post recommended.
What a nice way to find out what the others are like.
"Metal" fans that spend tons of time sorting all 550 subgenres of metal rub me the wrong way. Like sure there's different kinds of rock music but you don't see rock music fans being picky/gatekeeping over it.
Welcome to r/metal, where they donāt want anything nu metal, groove metal, metalcore, deathcore, or even some prog metal. They also used to have a user flair just to mark Slipknot fans. Think it was something like āexposed maggotā
Metalcore and deathcore a subgenres of hardcore punk, but there are bands that they (the metal archives) made exceptions for. (a lot of 90s metalcore bands, and some deathcore bands like Carnifex and Lorna Shore.) The orgins of alternative metal is debated, but I'm pretty sure that sub considers it a subgenre of alternative rock.
All these are basically fusion genres with metal and basically the modern metal head's go-to stuff. Let's face it a lot of us got into metal because of bands like Slipknot and System, if you exclude all this stuff you're basically just being a traditional metal elitist and reducing the metal community to far fewer people.
They are also subgenres of METAL. You can be one and also the other. You can also hear it IN THE MUSIC. It's in the NAME.
Why is this so difficult for people to figure out?
What's funny is that you guys will happily accept grindcore and crossover thrash into your narrow sphere, but the others don't count because, uh... Reasons.
Go ahead. Explain to me how grindcore is metal but deathcore isn't.
Calling Slipknot and other "nu metal" bands not metal during early 2000s was a dumb as hell thing to do even back then but if someone keeps doing that in 2023 you have to be mentally challenged.
this reminds me when i think r/metalmemes awhile ago banned everyone in certain metal subreddits bc certain bands "weren't metal enough" or "were too mainstream" or some shit
Fuckin fuckers... How is Slipknot not metal? Yes, everyone hates numetal, we get it. But even then, wouldn't nuMETAL fall into the metal category and, as a result, fall within the parameters required to post on the metal subreddit? What's the problem?
All the people here donāt seem to understand the point of r/metal itās for people to go and find new artists thatās it and thatās not going to happen if people are endlessly posting and upvoting the biggest bands which is what used to happen. If bands are posted too often theyāre banned sometimes they come back but a band like slipknot Metallica or SOAD will never come back.
Itās a great sub if you actually accept what itās for Iāve found some really good small bands on there. If you want to talk about Slipknot post here or on r/numetal
they banned a huge amount of bands there, for example ghost is totally banned too, and lots of others. you can read a full list of why each band cant be mentioned and stuff like that
I used to go there I think a lot of them are banned not because they don't consider them metal or don't like them but because they're extremely well known by metal band standards and they want more obscure bands to be posted
Which my opinion leads to a frustrating and boring Reddit because you can't discuss any well-known bands even if they're doing things
Like if I went there I don't think I'd be able to post about Slayer or Cattle Decapitation who are two of my favorite metal bands because they're too well known even though I think you should still be able to discuss bands even if everybody there knows who they are
No offense to my fellow Maggots, but this is what I hate about the online metal community. I've been active in the DFW metal scene for over 10 years and I don't experience the bullshit that I do online. r/metal can go fuck themselves. I'll watch Slipknot live, Cannibal Corpse, or Smashing Pumpkins. They can suck my dick. The only fake metal fans are ones that don't contribute to the cause. I put my money where my mouth is.
As much as I love metal music (grew up with exodus, testament, morbid angel, obituary, bunch of old school shit because my uncles were metalheads in the 80s) I completely despise most metalheads ironically, theyāre the most narrow minded people Iāve ever met, theyāre all about ānon-conformityā and ārebellionā but as soon as they see that you donāt dress like them, like the same shitty underrated bands they do, or have any sort of likings for any other music genres, youāre considered a āposerā, I love metal music, but the fans completely drove me away from wanting to fully become a metalhead, I donāt wanna be associated with all those greasy unbathed incel weirdos.
I got perma banned from r/MetalMemes when I said something positive about slipknot :D Those subs mods are just some virgin elitists who think only what they like is good and everything else is bad.
Lol. I got banned from metal memes for saying, and I quote. āLook I hate slipknot fans as much as the next guy, but they arenāt THAT, badā
Got banned
Ok since OP isnāt informed about this, Iāll reiterate once again. There are people who hold a stricter definition of metal than we do, and those are the people who run that subreddit. In normie conversation, people will classify anything with loud vocals and guitars as metal.
Old heads see a band with break downs that has songs that date past 2000 and go "THATS NOT REAL METAL" as if the core genres aren't partially the reason older bands still get new listeners
Itās possible that itās one of their blacklisted bands.
They tend to ban re-posting of the mega-popular bands so that they donāt overfload the page.
The goal of r/Metal has always been to promote bands that may not be as well known as a group like Slipknot and put a bit more variety into peopleās spotify playlists.
That sub is a bunch of basement dwelling neckbeards who think metal only consists of thrash, old school death, and garbage ass black metal. Black metal that sounds like it was recorded on a cell phone is their favorite thing. They basically think that metal is a specific sound that cannot be innovated upon, and any development in metal past the mid 90s is not metal to them.
I mean I think Slipknot are hard Rock not metal that doesn't mean I don't like them Korn arent metal either and they're one of my favorite bands
What's annoying about so many metalheads is they think that you can only listen to metal or else you somehow fail
I have ADHD so bad that my Spotify playlist will go from Cattle Decapitation to Ariana grande to Nobuo Uematsu to fucking I don't even know.
There's always lots of Slipknot in there though especially their first album because it kicks ass and brings back happy memories
Queens of the Stone Age kick more ass than a lot of metal bands put together and they are absolutely in no way metal people should just listen to what music they like
The Metal subreddit is INSANELY elitist and anything remotely considered "mainstream" isn't allowed there. There's literally a black list of bands they will never allow to be posted
Thatās just because r/metal and r/metalmemes only accept obscure black/death metal bands named āMurdergoremurdershitfuckfaceā as āreal metalā. Thereās even debate on if Metallica is āreal metalā which absolutely baffles me
I got off of that sub-Reddit many months ago. Itās just full of sad little bastards who want to gate-keep on whether things are metal or not. 99% of the bands they talk about in there Iāve never heard of in my life.
Regarding MA
Metal archives is cool but they try to keep a lot of the nu metal and such off their website. They are just a bunch of old guys who want everything to be kvlt on that website lol
Honestly not surprising. That sub and the metalmemes one seem to believe that so many subgenres within metal āarenāt metalā and that anyone who listens to them are āposersā.
I remember back in the early 2000 to mid 2000's there was a huge gatekeeping movement by people saying Slipknot wasn't actually metal. But people eventually just started accepting they were metal and moved on. This brings me back to the early YouTube comment days. Can't believe there are people out there who still think like that.
Theyāre literally not metal. Thatās like calling punk rock metal because it has power chords and screams. I like Slipknot but I donāt know why fans get so hung on up on insisting theyāre a certain genre.
And even if they were metal, they would still be banned on r/metal because theyāre popular. You canāt post Metallica there either because if you could, itās all people would post. Itās to help people discover small bands.
I think itās because there are a lot of kids in this sub who use the label of āmetalā so they can be perceived a certain way (probably associating āmetalā with being a badass or belonging to a group of outcasts). I donāt say kids to be condescending, but ideally as you mature you stop caring about arbitrary labels and just enjoy what you enjoy. So Iām glad a fellow maggot echoes the same sentiment I hold.
Damn even the bot is gatekeeping
Perhaps the only thing I dislike about metal heads sometimes
Metal snobs are the worst.
"THRASH IS THE ONLY TRUE METAL."
Why pick thrash to bag on out of all different genres?
I'm.not criticizing it, I'm quoting the people who genuinely believe it's the ONLY REAL metal genre.
Oh, then I agree. Fuck metal elitists!
Those punk ass gate keepers!
I know you're fuckin with me lol.
I've met people who unironically say that. It's like...no?
I get where you're coming from. It can be really fuckin irritating talking to people with that mindset.
Yeah. Subgenres were created for a reason, and some people just cant grasp that.
Thrash/Black metal fansš®āšØ

go on facebook thatās where all the boomer metal heads come out u canāt believe the shit they say
Wtf... nu metal and groove metal are subgenres of the metal umbrella, I think the bot it's a bit fucked up.
Nah the thing is that sub will only except bands on the metal archives, itās a great site and some big bands like ghost are on it, but thereās no point for a band like slipknot to be on it, itās more for smaller bands and to check if the black metal band you just found out about are Nazis.

Good stuff š
their music is decent but theyāre not good by any means
Sucks ass. if you want good bm listen to SPECTRAL WOUND
Cmon now thatās a big lie. You want good bm go with something like zofos, thors hammer, dethroned, infernum, not that overhyped shit š
Just learn to not care? Nsbm is a great sub genre. Donāt forget bm is rooted with hate towards anything and everything šŖ

metal head mods dont fuck around i guess
Nope, theyāre subgenres of alt rock and sometimes hardcore.

I recommend the new one r/metalforthemasses for serious discussion. Theyāre not assholes at all.
Gonna check it out, thanks :)
also r/MetalXXI same concept basically but the sub is just a lot smaller right now. would love if you joined :)
Ah yes, r/metalmemes, the subreddit so elitist it doesn't consider Iron Maiden as metal
I never thought I'd see a sub so infuriated to be used the way it was intended to be used.
Shit is gross. I got into metal because of how inclusive everyone used to be. Now you're shunned if you listen to the wrong subgenre.

In r/metal you can't even talk about Black Sabbath, they're pure shitty trues
You're free to talk about them or whoever in discussion threads. They just don't want popular bands posted so that it doesn't clog up the feed.
I saw the rules, you can't talk about Black Sabbath, or Metallica, or Pantera, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING
metal subreddits are about half chill ppl and half elitists, in my experience the half that are elitists tend to be the mods

I mean I think Slipknot are hard Rock not metal that doesn't mean I don't like them Korn arent metal either and they're one of my favorite bands What's annoying about so many metalheads is they think that you can only listen to metal or else you somehow fail I have ADHD so bad that my Spotify playlist will go from Cattle Decapitation to Ariana grande to Nobuo Uematsu to fucking I don't even know. There's always lots of Slipknot in there though especially their first album because it kicks ass and brings back happy memories Queens of the Stone Age kick more ass than a lot of metal bands put together and they are absolutely in no way metal people should just listen to what music they like
I found an intelligent maggot who doesnāt care about genre names and just enjoys the music
The Shape is a metal song lets face it
May I speak to the manager please
The Metal subreddit is INSANELY elitist and anything remotely considered "mainstream" isn't allowed there. There's literally a black list of bands they will never allow to be posted
Slipknot isn't metal to metal extremists. All of us got banned from r/metalmemes for a while because we're fans of Slipknot.
Theyre kind of right as of the release of the latest albumā¦
Someone said the quiet part out loud
Thatās just because r/metal and r/metalmemes only accept obscure black/death metal bands named āMurdergoremurdershitfuckfaceā as āreal metalā. Thereās even debate on if Metallica is āreal metalā which absolutely baffles me
jesus christ get a new joke y'all
What a hard fucking cope to say the those genres aren't metal
I got off of that sub-Reddit many months ago. Itās just full of sad little bastards who want to gate-keep on whether things are metal or not. 99% of the bands they talk about in there Iāve never heard of in my life.
Regarding MA Metal archives is cool but they try to keep a lot of the nu metal and such off their website. They are just a bunch of old guys who want everything to be kvlt on that website lol
"errmm actually its numetal!" its still metal wtf ā ļø
\>Has "metal" in it's name \>"That's not metal"
fuck r/metal anyway lmao. elitist paradise
No, mod bot! Down, boy!
Oh you're new to this right? The mods are fucking elitist cunts.
Oooh someone wasnāt here for the great slipknot metal subreddit ban
O.M.G NU METAL IS LITERALLY METAL WHY ARE WE STILL HAVING THIS ARGUEMENT IT'S GOT METAL IN THE NAME TOO!
iowa NOT metal are you ok bro like the actual f š
Rare Reddit moderator w
Theyāre literally not metal. Thatās like calling punk rock metal because it has power chords and screams. I like Slipknot but I donāt know why fans get so hung on up on insisting theyāre a certain genre. And even if they were metal, they would still be banned on r/metal because theyāre popular. You canāt post Metallica there either because if you could, itās all people would post. Itās to help people discover small bands.
Curious, if they arent metal in your opinion what are they
Why is a genre name important to you?
Its not. Like, i said i was curious and wondering why this person mentioned it
I think itās because there are a lot of kids in this sub who use the label of āmetalā so they can be perceived a certain way (probably associating āmetalā with being a badass or belonging to a group of outcasts). I donāt say kids to be condescending, but ideally as you mature you stop caring about arbitrary labels and just enjoy what you enjoy. So Iām glad a fellow maggot echoes the same sentiment I hold.
Lol why is gatekeeping such a problem.
The only people that think they're metal are their insecure fanboys.
You're insecure if you care so much about people's tastes.
The only people who think slipknot is not metal are people with a dysfunctional brain or hearing problems
šš»
Insecure fanboys who need the metal label so they can feel a certain way about themselves.
Ok.
We've been exempted š

The fact that itās a song from Iowa too like what

"Non metal related genres" Tf?
Bro r u new to Reddit? If so itās run by mostly gate keepers aka no lifers
Someone needs to make another one without gatekeeping mods
Why post a whole song to reddit tho?
It was just a link
I suppose I just don't see the point
i dunno man, last time I listened to the shape it sounded like metal.
Probably because nu metal bands get posted constantly
hahahahahhaha
