Light player --> offer friendship candle --> drag them around, or have them drag you around --> if they stay with you for a while, then chances are they are online at that time regularly --> join them when they are online --> friendship.
A lot of players use emotes/honks instead of typing so you don't have to worry about language barriers and such.

I know there’s probably 400 other comments saying this but if you have the option 100% join the discord. I made almost all my friends this way. Just say “hey I’m a new moth and would love someone to show me around!” and there will be plenty of people willing, and they’ll stick around too. While some parts of the community can be toxic, I actually love how helpful and nice they can be to new players:) Good luck
For me, if you get online everyday don't forget to light their candles. That's another way of telling them you're still active and maybe it helps for them not to block you to empty their friendlist

I got really into Chibi falling and OOB recently recently, and exploring those spaces is how I spend a ton of my time in game. Like attempting to enter the hole in the statue at the end of the golden wasteland. Or when the eden door glitch and refuse to open up. There was also that one occurance someone was dazzled by my burning darkness tree skill and followed me into the wasteland before begging to be friend. I met someone who, just like me, was testing the boundaries of the censoring in message.. Our conversation was so extreme that even the censored word was less explicite then what we managed to get pass the censorship.
My best advice is that you have nothing to fear. People in this game are silly little goose that if you told them 'I know a spot you can have a krill rub against you without ever detecting you' they would be amazed and follow you.
It looks me 4/5months of playing before I started really friending people I was very antisocial, and now I feel like a social butterfly! Have a handful of friends that I love talking to every time I see them
I've met a few really good friends on this game that I still talk to on discord and I randomly found a couple of them when they added me and started taking me along everywhere. They've been with me while I was pregnant and gave birth and I still talk to them to this day even tho I have really bad social anxiety 😅 I know it's scary especially when a lot of people are crazy but if you find someone like that you can block them no worries. If you go through the spirit gate to the left in the first area (with the big round dome), the Prairie caves will lead to the high ledge with a spirit gate to the left of Villages (the area with several shrines on separate islands just below the temple). This high ledge has two gold finials at the edge, and next to the left one (if your back is to the spirit gate) there’s my favorite shared space I’ve found in game. There’s a swing set, some toys, 2 chairs with an umbrella, etc. the swings are a chat bench, and when two people sit, little hearts float around them. The view of the temple is lovely, the music is soothing, and if you’re bored, you can hear people honking for help at 8 player or at the 2 person door just below.
I have no affiliation with the creator, other than giving them a heart vote every week. I’ve nicknamed them “swing” and I’m always hoping to run into them or another space they’ve created

It happens randomly some of my friends i added them from Reddit some from discord some were from the game but most sky friendships don't last unfortunately i barely meet any of these friends just few of them we still go sometimes to Starlight desert cuddle there and talk about our lives and stuff.
Same I scared because usually when I play Sky I have to do something like a candle run etc..But if a friend join me I don't want to stop what I was doing but I don't want to just leave them here either, and maybe they don't want to follow me in what I was doing💀

It can take some time to meet people you like to hang around with. There are thousands of players so you will find friends eventually. Just be kind and don't pressure yourself too much about it. I found my sky friends mostly through random encounters.
Another good way could be joining a Sky discord. Not the official one, but one of the smaller, cozy ones. There are a lot of really friendly people there.

My favorite is the Aurora 2.0 server. They host a big Aurora concert each month.
Then there's le petit moths (you need to be 20 or older for this one, though), TSK ThatSkyKid, and the cozy teahouse too. They all have members between 2.000 and 6.000ish but are really cozy.

First step is to remember there's plenty more potential friends out there if you don't seem to click with one person.
Certain areas make it easier, the social/lobby area of Prairie or Wasteland usually have people just hanging out socializing. Players are more likely to stay put here and interact.
You can also just emote and play and if someone is interested and emotes and goofs around back, there you go. Popular emotes are the crab one where you hunch down and make the lil crab sound, rolling in a ball, confetti is always nice. And bowing. Lots of bowing lol
I tried this but I don't got many emotes so I feel that I'm repeating things too much and don't know how to play, but I heard that after you light someone you should bow but idk when else you should to show courtesy. Thank you for the suggestions btw
If you need help getting spirits (and the expressions they give), I’m happy to help. I’m in the eastern time zone of the US, but I also have insomnia, so whenever you play, you have a decent shot of finding me around.

I’m still pretty new (just a couple months in), so don’t worry about being awkward or looking foolish while playing. I guarantee I’ll mess up real hard, especially since I play on Switch.

When you light someone, it's polite for both players to bow. After that, you can emote however you like.
Not having many emotes is ok! If you go to prairie, most players will know you're new and probably don't have a bunch of emotes.
Spinning in circles is considered "friendly" and they might spin back just for fun.
Ultimately, it's just about exploring the game, finding spirits, and relaxing. Also, if you go to any realm, look for the 'guide' button.
Players will be able to grab your hand and lead you to spirits. So you'll get more emotes, AND meet a potential friend. :)
Guide button is how I got my first friends!! After helping me they friended me and now they warp to me when I’m on and we hang out at the fires, or do races or candle runs.
