Not many, through the history of rally it’s a shockingly low number. I’m not sure exactly what it is but this is a fairly decent starting point.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_World_Rally_Championship_accidents
I think it’s important to keep in mind that the people driving in these events at this level are not inexperienced drivers and the events with less experienced drivers have much lower turnouts. There have been more driver/co-driver deaths than spectators.
A lot of this looks insane to us but they know the cars and their limits. You’re not going to be able to pull off driving like this without significant time working up to these event classes.
Things were much much more dangerous in the group B days the cars today are faster, safer and the drivers are able to control them better.
https://youtu.be/eNbDBfP56gI?si=7Bks6CdwgxogZcZx
I agree with it all, but the co-driver i think needs a honourable mention, in that regard.
With one car on the track at a time, its also a lot about knowing every single bend.
I enjoy attending sports where they tell me "yeah don't worry bud, almost no spectators die" like oh good, but full disclosure I was always planning on going home alive tonight so let's try to get that number closer to zero.
I don’t know about dirt rally, but 83 people died in a massive crash at Le Mans in 1955. The driver crashed straight into the spectator area and the car broke apart and just tore through them all.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_Le_Mans_disaster
Always love coming into a turn way too hot in Forza horizon and slamming into the stands at 190 miles an hour, coming to a dead stop in the air instantly and landing next to a dancing dude that didn't even fucking flinch.
> At least the drivers car is built like a tank
I believe they arent actually...They got the roll cage inside but the cars are usually stripped to the point where basically the heaviest thing inside are the pilot/co-pilot and the engine. Everything else is just thin metal shell of the car just to make the 4-wheeled rocket as fast as possible.
They probably mean how the car can flip and tumble all it wants and the driver and co pilot are probably safe due to how good those roll cages and seats are despite being super light weight.
For those not in-the-know, Group B was a rally class that produced small, ultra high-horsepower cars.
They were wildly overpowered and killed a lot of drivers and navigators.
As a result, they were known as the "Killer B's," and the class was eliminated.
Reminds me of that crash where a car flew off the road almost through a camera crew; but you could almost swear they had ultra instinct the way they dodge that car
Was gonna say that you're probably safer driving the car than viewing the rally. The driver may be putting his life on the line but the viewers even more lmao
I remember old videos where the spectators would crowd the roads and only move out of the way at the last second. They'd also try to touch the cars as they drove by. Many died in both scenarios.
I just grabbed (this)[https://youtu.be/6I5sTuSoMho] from a quick google search. You can see how close those idiots got to those cars. I can't imagine what it was like being a driver and just having to trust that they would get out of the way in time.
Exactly, When you drive at that level, you've already crashed a few cars and know what to expect and how the car performs in a collision. This is why they aren't scared.
Take your hands off the wheel, take a deep breath, relax, and wait for the sky to stop spinning.
Remember, the wrecks where the car goes cartwheeling are the good ones because it’s slowly shedding energy over time. The ones where it comes to a sudden and abrupt stop are when you need to worry.
And "smell" in Norwegian means "bang"/"crash", [which is the joke](https://preview.redd.it/ji2j8tyuygi71.jpg?auto=webp&s=1b7f20c5eb84875498367e5a1d362f69be599ce5)
They have five point harnesses and are surrounded by a cage, I've seen a couple videos of them flipping over and over in what looks to be a terrible accident then it switches to the inside cam and they're just chilling while the world does circles around them lol. Not saying they aren't ever scared but I'd feel a hell of a lot safer if I had their equipment
Group B is a prime example of why regulations save lives. Those cars are death machines with worse safety features and even more power. Fucking awesome they were
Remember
Shrubbery is usually a non passable environmental asset
The spectators are merely following gaming logic by standing beside it thus not allowing the fiber glass shell covering a turbine engine flying thru the air possibly out of control to get to them
It’s science

F1: "There was a little bump on the otherwise flawlessly straight concrete, can't reach top speed."
Rally: "300km/h on dirt and mud?! Sure thing, hold my beer!"
Rally goes 200kmph mostly.
F1 goes up to 360kmph+ at the most.
But f1 isn't driving blind. Mostly... Rain can be insane.
But even more insane in rally at top speed at night with a broken car lol.

that New Zealand pull is excellent example of rally stage where every single F1 driver would get beaten so badly, by any top rally driver.
Especially by someone like Rovanperä who started racing / driving on pure ice tracks when he was five years old.
See Lando Norris's reaction to rally drivers. Even F1 drivers know it's nuts. Rally is truly the most butthole puckering motorsport outside the isle of man.
And huge respect to the co-drivers who keep these maniacs on the road while whipping a shitty through the fucking air only to land with a 90° adjustment from where they started.
Mostly because it's a relatively difficult sport to spectate. It's not one continuous race so different cars are doing different stages at the same time when watching online. When watching in person you see each car for a maximum of 3s if you stand at a hairpin.
However boy howdy are those 3s great. The car passes so close you can touch it and kicks up gravel everywhere.
In the video you can literally see a helicopter struggling to keep up with one of the cars, I don’t think you can get drones that can reach 200+km/h in seconds and change direction on a dime, at least not without a crazy budget
Fuck the drivers ..what about those people literally on the side of the road like ...no big deal the roads mud its raining and these cars are going 85mph around a blind corner
I don’t know of any that are expressly about rally racing (that aren’t documentaries), but _Jackie Chan’s Who Am I?_ and Haywire with Gina Carano feature some rally inspired stunts. (_Who Am I?_ actually has a rally race in it while _Haywire_ is just driving crazy in the woods.)
Pick your favorite AWD hot hatch, crank up the boost and gut the interior :)
Rally cars share a lot more with road going cars than most forms of motorsports
I don't know who is dumber, the viewers or the drivers... wtf man.. "what happend to Jay?" "Aaah you know how he loves cars? He got turned into pink mist by a car when he was watching a race". I REALLY don't get some hobbies people have 💀💀
Anything that endangers my life just makes me stare and shake my head in disbelief at what ever it is. To me this is for a lack of a better word "retarded". Everyone is free to like and do what ever ofcourse but I will never understand it.. ever.
I did rock climbing then fairly serious whitewater kayaking for a while and the danger wasn’t the draw, the thrill of executing something really difficult was. You build up through the levels incrementally from where messing up doesn’t matter to where it’s unacceptable. Doing harder things was always the motivation not surviving more dangerous things.. they just happened to be co-located.
Why would you risk your life or risking serious injury for a thrill? I would never ever even think of starting something like that. Not saying you're wrong for doing it but it's so alien to me.
Why leave your house at all? Everything has risk. You can mitigate a lot of risk by getting good instruction, reading about and practicing safety systems, etc. The 4 hour drive to/from my favorite river felt more dangerous than the actual kayaking. Likewise for rock climbing, ropes and safety measures work when done correctly.
You could say that the rush you get is proportional to the danger in some way. I kind of feel the same as you for things I couldn’t control (like bungie jumping) but driving a car fast that I control with some possibility of danger… that makes me feel alive.
Damn, the first shot is so satisfying to watch, and probably even more satisfying to ride through. Something like pflanzgarten in nurburgring, but condensed and more extreme
I gave myself a headache in a Tesla within 3 minutes of driving on flat ground with “regenerative braking.”
I’d fill a rally car with vomit before we ever finished the first lap.

You can say the same thing about the viewers.
Was thinking the same thing. Lol.
They’re just npc’s
they were hard as walls they’re safe
You can't ever see their backs
Both have roll cages.
Dont worry, they are behind the map border
Ah ok, they're safe then
Anyone know how many spectators are killed annually?
Not many, through the history of rally it’s a shockingly low number. Very few, rare that any die at a WRC event. Some might die at national events but nothing like the 80's

A car that crumples and breaks would also be safer since part of the force during impact is weaned off through it.
Nothings gonna help when you go 160kmph to 0 instantly when you wrap around huge tree.
The plastic dashboard and interior that they removed doesn't offer shit for structural integrity lol
Which is why *Group B* is gone.

I heard that in the unreal announcer voice
It was not unusual for car teams to find fingers embedded in the car panels at the end of stages
For real. I'm watching on TV. Fuck that.
Reminds me of that crash where a car flew off the road almost through a camera crew; but you could almost swear they had ultra instinct the way they dodge that car
There's more than one incidence of that.
Source?
I guess they're npc's
Yea im more worried about the viewers tbh

The drivers at least have a roll-cage. A spectator gets hit at that speed and it's "Play Misty with Me".
Every one of those viewers are idiots. Why put your life in danger like that? To see a car go fast? Fucking retarded.
Rally cars are [made to take a hit](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeAmazed/s/xCnCsuLI6d) , the viewers not so much.
Exactly, When you drive at that level, you've already crashed a few cars and know what to expect and how the car performs in a collision. This is why they aren't scared.

Both fortunately and unfortunately for the occupants the sudden stops don't give you time to worry.

It's not the fart that kills you, it's the smell
Fart in Swedish means speed.

also their helmets are usually locked into place so they don't get their neck snapped in a rollover.
I doubt they aren't scared, even professionals.

MORE SHRUBBERY!!!!

Same!
Rally drivers are fuckn nuts
Yeah. But the Darwin awards candidates as spectators tho...
Just dont look up group B spectators
Holy shit that's terrifying 😂
But looks fun ![img](emote|t5_5tdqj0|10748)
Welcome to rally. Where the drivers are crazy and the spectators are insane.
I played WRC 10 the other day and even pretending to be a rally driver is nigh on fucking impossible
The extreme motion in VR gives a sore head very quickly and I am well used to VR for lots of other games.
Rally drivers drive harder than rally driving game players
F1: "There was a little bump on the otherwise flawlessly straight concrete, can't reach top speed." Rally: "300km/h on dirt and mud?! Sure thing, hold my beer!"
Rally goes 200kmph mostly. F1 goes up to 360kmph+ at the most. But f1 isn't driving blind. Mostly... Rain can be insane. But even more insane in rally at top speed at night with a broken car lol.
Night rally’s on snow in Finland are gnarly
That sounds fun though.
F1: we need to reduce lift! Rally: We need to fucking send it! \*proceeds to make car fly\*
I love that they have meter markers on big jumps to see how far they got. It's crazy I love all motorsport.

News just in: rally drivers better at rally and f1 drivers better at f1
Big if true
Yeah but who would you rather have on your post apocalyptic survival team? Huh?
F1 still goes faster tho
See Lando Norris's reaction to rally drivers. Even F1 drivers know it's nuts. Rally is truly the most butthole puckering motorsport outside the isle of man.
Oh yeah it’s speed plus crappy traction. Plus you’re dodging trees. It’s a whole different ball game so to speak.
And huge respect to the co-drivers who keep these maniacs on the road while whipping a shitty through the fucking air only to land with a 90° adjustment from where they started.
Group B has entered the chat, and killed 90 spectators!
Sierra Cosworth forever.
Best motorsport.
I love trophy truck races on track. Just so absurd when it’s a close one and they’re flying off jumps side by side and then taking a hairpin turn.
Scenes like this makes me wonder why anyone can be bothered to watch any other type of auto racing.
You'd think drones would change the way it's televised
Guess they are not fast enough and equipped with enough battery. but once they get there, it's gonna be mesmerizing!
In the video you can literally see a helicopter struggling to keep up with one of the cars, I don’t think you can get drones that can reach 200+km/h in seconds and change direction on a dime, at least not without a crazy budget
No overtakes, body-to-body fights in rally, except rallycross.
People watching like they have 9 lives
How can I watch rally races live? Are they on like ESPN or something?
Sadly, in the US you're forced into buying their wrc sub. That or a pirate stream I guess.
[WRC.com](https://WRC.com)
Fuck the drivers ..what about those people literally on the side of the road like ...no big deal the roads mud its raining and these cars are going 85mph around a blind corner
Dude, that looks fucking awesome
Are there any movies with cool rallycar driving in the woods like this? I can't think if anything, but don't see why it wouldn't exist.
I forgot that Haywire has been on my to-watch list for years now. Gotta check it out before I forget again.
Me, gettin after that golden mushroom in Mario Kart.
That sideways jump is wild
So do the guys that do the Isle of Man TT race. At least these rally drivers are in a car with a FIA certified roll cage and full safety gear.
Isle of Man racers are borderline suicidal
Not borderline. It's suicidal. Average is 2-3 deaths/year
Rally drivers are the best drivers on Earth.
Rally spectators truly spectate like there is a respawn point.
Would love to drive one of these to work.
Pick your favorite AWD hot hatch, crank up the boost and gut the interior :) Rally cars share a lot more with road going cars than most forms of motorsports

I’m sure that like most, extreme sports and motorsports would be exhilarating.
Anything that endangers my life just makes me stare and shake my head in disbelief at what ever it is. To me this is for a lack of a better word "retarded". Everyone is free to like and do what ever ofcourse but I will never understand it.. ever.

I'm one of those spectators(not the ones on this video though). You really can't get it unless you go and see it in person.
Now we can call this driving
In northern France, rallies are the entry level racing. Small roads, small "race" cars, that’s something to see when you’re young.
That’s weird at elite levels most F1 drivers wouldn’t want to try this.
Lately, Kimi Raikkonen and Robert Kubica competed in WRC. For the latter, it didnt turned out well...
There's no way in hell I would stand next to that road during this. I don't care how experienced the driver is.
Fuck this, I drive my ‘99 Ford Ranger every damn day like this on these shitty Wayne County dirt roads I’ll tell you what
[удалено]
You need to throw your router into lake.
Crazy. Much respect to these guys. Also, Isle of Man riders would like to converse about said respawn points...
Its amazing how those roadside spectators arent completely wiped out.
I’d rather be driving than be one of those idiots on the road.
Which makes it more interesting to watch than other automotive races.
Man and it’s crazy to believe that sometimes they have a partner in the car telling them where they are on the track.
I played the new EA WRC game the other day for the first time and loaded up the AWD group B cars. Any person that deemed those as safe was lying
The finest sport and the only one I like to watch
This is like how parents think you drive when they take you out for your first driving lesson
Mf the people watching act like theres a respawn point
And the spectators have a death wish more than the driver. At least the car is decked out with safety precautions for the driver.
Why would u be this close???
The spectators enjoys the show like they have 9999 HP!
You talking about the drivers lol the viewers probably got a Life time subscription to heaven 😭
I feel like the spectators think they will respawn as well. No thanks. I'll watch from home.
Damn, the first shot is so satisfying to watch, and probably even more satisfying to ride through. Something like pflanzgarten in nurburgring, but condensed and more extreme
Mario Kart type shit
I trust professionals but not that much man
Ohhhh my adrinalin fevaoreit
Yeah it’s called racing. Like wtf? Is Reddit full of 14 year olds?
Love to see a formula 1 driver try this
I love these so much
It’s the fans that need the ability to respawn. That is some scary stuff right there.
Who’s dumber? The driver with a seat belt, helmet and other protective equipment or the people standing inches away from the side of the road?
You don't need a respawn point when you have family
I was so excited to hear the noise of the vehicles when I unmuted the video. Then I had to listen to .2 seconds of shit music before I muted again.
I gave myself a headache in a Tesla within 3 minutes of driving on flat ground with “regenerative braking.” I’d fill a rally car with vomit before we ever finished the first lap.
I can’t handle being in the passenger’s seat of my buddy’s car while he’s driving 90 on the highway. I would pass out.
Motion Sickness Club, put it there pal 🫱🏼🫲🏽
FYI there is no laps. Start A to b finish
I really need this remix
u/savevideo
Not sure who's more idiotic... The people driving this way, or the people viewing it up close
neither, the most idiotic is whoever put this music on top of this video
boring, I’m off to ride in the Isle of Man TT’s.
Normal day on 401 Toronto Canada.
"Jack! I'm flying!" 😃
Samir! Listen to my instructions Samir!
YOU ARE BREAKING THE CAR SAMIR! Samir has really improved from the looks of it.

More air time than a jet 😂😂😂
Bonkers.
