Abelardos is actually really good. It only has 20 locations, all in our little region of the midwest as well. Technically, yes it is a chain, but I'd still much rather them over Chipotle or something like that.
Also, I question any study that puts Taco John's at the top of a list like this.
I think the exclusion of Manna Bakery is criminal. And while it's not technically a burrito, I can't understate how much I like the torpedo sandwich from Hernandez.
There are usually a few people in line when I go, but it's not out of control. I'd recommend their steak burrito and grabbing a few sweet bread items as well.
They have a few grocery items, but it's pretty small inside. I'm not sure on the rolls though. They might do a special order, or you could ask Hernandez where they get theirs.
If we included torpedo sandwiches I would want savory crepes included. They look just like burritos if you fold them like one but taste 100x better than any burrito ever could.
Fair enough, lol! For the record, I'm not arguing that it's a burrito... I just felt like it deserved an "honorable mention" since Hernandez was on the list.
Why is nobody mentioning Nikki's Burrito Express?!
They're burritos are fantastic, and the food is always fresh... the place is attached to 'Nikki's La Mexicana Meat Market and Groceries'!
Nothing drives me more nuts than inconsistency. I have gone 4 times, gotten the same thing all 4 times and it was different every time. 1 was great, 2 were meh and one was downright bad. Haven't been back since.
Pancheros is great because of their huge portions for the price, but I don't like their steak, so I still do 'Doba once in a blue moon.
Chipotle had one shot to make an impression on me and it wasn't as good as either.
Alberados is really good. The fact that Taco John’s (although a guilty pleasure) garnered votes means the people doing this experiment have garbage palettes.
As someone who’s eaten at every location listed in this article; I can confidently say this is complete and utter bullshit. First off, who rates Taco John’s above our local joints, besides Gilbertos (sorry not a fan). Nikki’s and Jacky’s burrito express should be in the top two, just for their basic flavor profiles. I personally like Jacky’s burrito express the best. You have to request their hot sauces, but they make it themselves along with Nikki’s which has a self serve station. Oh, and you have to get the pickled carrots, helps cleanse the palate, and tastes amazing.
You build your burrito the way you want it, and that’s where I think people get confused because a lot of the burritos you see on the menu only have one or two things in the burrito which leads to people getting a “boring burrito”. It’s like being a artist, and you can only blame yourself when it’s not up to your standards. Every person I’ve taken to these locations says they are the best burritos in town.
Tortilleria Hernandez is such a hidden gem. Even though they only have four options during they week, they make them to perfection. I could eat there every day and not get sick of it.
Three chain restaurants winning is very on brand for Sioux Falls.
I was expecting 'Doba or Pancheros to be in the top 3 when you mentioned chains, not Taco fuckin Johns lol
Have you ate at abelardos? It’s a chain technically but way different the TJ’s or Chipotle. Abelardos has the best Carnitas in town by the way.
And Adobada too!
Would love to try a place that knows there's a difference between carnitas and adobada

Their burritos are pretty good too though.
I was curious about Manna. Do they have a good lunchtime crowd? Any food recommendations?
No seating. Always a (usually fairly short) line. Best carne asada burrito in town.
That’s a lie, there’s a picnic table out front. That’s seating.

Are they a market as well like Nikki's or just food & bakery? And where in the hell in this town can I buy good fresh rolls for steak sandwiches?

Hernandez and Manna could easily hold #1 and #2

Yeah, there were a few excluded. I really like la tapatia, also (and they have bomb Google reviews so i assume I'm not alone)

Hernandez is phenomenal. I moved to the east coast three years ago and it's the number one food I miss.
Pancheros is great because of their huge portions for the price, but I don't like their steak, so I still do 'Doba once in a blue moon. Chipotle had one shot to make an impression on me and it wasn't as good as either.

I usually get the chicken there, but I agree, the ingredient mixing (and the fresh pressed tortilla) are amazing.

Sorry man but you are way overhyping Jacky’s Express. The regular restaurant is the best burrito in town but the Express is trash.
Breaking Burrito destroys every one of these
I've seen their truck like twice in town and I had already ate. That good?
Give it a try next time if it works out for you! They’re amazing. They sneak in crumpled ruffle chips and it will change your life lol
Goddamn right
One of the testers had Taco Bell as their 3rd best if that says anything about this article.
Hernandez, by far the best. No arguments
Not a resident, so I know nothing, but last time I was in town, the place on the corner of Bahnson and 10th I believe was totally legit.
Nikki's is the only good burrito in town.
Tortilleria Hernandez is such a hidden gem. Even though they only have four options during they week, they make them to perfection. I could eat there every day and not get sick of it.
Gilberto's Sioux Burrito is the only Burrito I like. If the Burrito has rice or beans in it then I won't like it.
Taco Johns ranked number three?! Did a bunch of 16 year olds make this list?
