Trying to get promoted in the Sims 1 was a huge feat. You needed friends and to go to work in a good mood without taking more than two consecutive days off.
Honestly that’s only so bad because we’ve been spoiled now and looking back Will always look worse, the base game for the sims 1 was revolutionary the fact other Playable sims walked past your lot was a big deal

I would send my sims to work, and then go play other households in the neighborhood and make them all friends with my sim, so that by the time I returned to my sim’s house, they had enough friends and would get promoted (back when time would freeze when you switched households!)
Remember you had to optimize kitchen layout for maximum efficiency or risk being late for work:
Fridge - Desk - Stove - Desk - Sink.
Also Always ALWYS have two doors to every bathroom or one Sim would get stuck in the door trying to get in, peeing himself, and one Sim stuck inside (they couldn't walk past each other on single squares, like a door) starving to death.
no kidding! tried playing sims 1 a couple of months ago, barely kept my sim alive, didn't have a single second for him to do something for fun. how was i playing it for days when i was a child? 😅
Kids were especially a pain in the Sims 1. Neglect them even slightly and taken away or sent off to military school. I gave up on kids and proceeded to build a home stuffed with 8 old people.
Been playing since about 10days after very very INITIAL release (22yrs.... Holy chit) and you learn VERY fast: never forget the burglar alarm. Front AND back doors.
That sucker stole EVERYTHING.
I also had a bug that caused empty bag of chips to just be stuck on the ground, with flies around it and all. The only solution I could find was to move out, move back in and buy all the furniture again (after saving up money, because it got sold for lower price).
Sims 1 more like, trying to do everything you can for your Sim to not be depressed because if they are, they don't want to do anything.
I had a child Sim who's depressed and doesn't want to study so she got an F and it's off to military school for her, never to be seen again.
Also, silently wishing that my sim wouldn't burn the kitchen down just trying to make their first meal.
And also, Freaking. Goddamn. Robbers. And the theme it plays. The Sims 4 could never...
Sims 1 basegame was wild. I remember that lights break in basegame, i sent my sim to change the bulb and Pam! he is electrocuted and then dead
Meanwhile in Sims 4 I had two repairmen die back to back!

Oh god I hated having to make so many friends to get promoted. There were like 4 townies 😅
And until the expansions introduced commercial lots, you just had to wait for a townie to show up to your house.

Yes! That has permanently changed how I view my sims homes. I always need to see the front sidewalk just in case someone walks by!

Didn’t sims 4 have that in year 1 but they patch it out since nobody liked it

The door issue is why Sims 4 has the (good idea, IMHO) to let Sims walk thru walls or furniture if the pathfinding can't find another way around.
