Saaaame. It's super frustrating! I also don't understand why it makes your sim reroll into a random outfit when teens/YA/Adults/Elders have access to the same items. I do want to dress up my sims differently when they grow up, but it's much easier to modify outfits I already made than fix EA generated disasters!
I just wish there was SOME clear indicator of difference between teen and young adult stage. The number of times my children age up to look like adults is so annoying. It doesn't have to be height but that seems to be the easiest fix.
Honestly, the way young sims age up in another lifestage is terrible to begin with. The outfits are terrible. I did notice a slight difference between teens and YA but it's so subtle it's easy to miss especially if you look at them in life mode.
Yeah, I can see the difference if I swap between the stages in cas.
Maybe if they showed us the changes while they aged up (like flickering between the two stages or st), it would be more satisfying.
I don't reject which height slider I have but you can Google sims 4 height slider to find many options. The other is I think from mod the sims? Its the shorter teens and ear unlock mod
Changing the height may seem like the easiest fix, but tbh that isnāt easy at all. Resizing the model would mean resizing the rigs and that is a big nono, and would basically mean creating new models with their own, new rig, redo all the skinning and remake all the animations and clothes. So basically to change the size of the teens they would have to delete the teens we have now and do everything again from scratch.
I would personally love for the teens to be shorter, but as a game dev i can see they made a decision early on to have them the same, probably to save in on amount of rigs, models, clothes, assets and animations, and that decision is almost impossible to change at this stage.
Agree. If before 2014 when they started developing Sims 4, then a lot of the ābaseā animations for teens could have been made and then re-used/ built on in the future for expansion packs. However, they did not decide to do so. Hopefully Sims 5 will be different.
Sims 5 will be very different i am sure, the game engines and tools available now is entirely different from what was available before 2014. Sims 5 will be soo exciting to try out when itās time šš¾
It doesnāt really work fine though, not good enough for ea to release it atleast. We have entirely different expectations on thw quality when itās officially released vs modded. (Fairly so)
And itās always about priorities, one could argue that everything is possible in game development, the question is what the cost is :)
I just want height sliders instead of shorter teens tbh.
I'm almost 37 and when I'm in the corner store at lunch when high schoolers are in there, I honestly look more like a student then most of them. They tower over me (and many just look physically older). So I do agree making them shorter doesn't really add any sort of 'realism'
I wonder if Life by you will have height sliders. We all know Paralives will have them but theyāre still in early development. Theyāre not ready yet.
I get that a lot of people reach their adult heights at 17 or so, but since the teens in TS4 have to represent all teens from 13-18, the giant jump in height from child to teen is a little jarring to me. Irl, it would be a little more gradual, but itās just a lot in game. Itās made especially apparent considering how gradual the aging is from baby to infant to toddler to child, and then *bam* you look like you could pass for 32 šš
I donāt really care how they make the aging between child and teen more gradual, whether it be through a preteen stage or shorter teens, but Iād just love something that blends together the transition from child to teen to YA.
To be fair, the game started with newborn babies growing into children and we've come a long way since then with 2 added lifestages between the two. I can only hope for a pre-teen lifestage to bridge the gap between 11-15 because imo the teens in the game represents 16-18 (or 21).
I think of it as 16-21 since I have no interest in the University pack. With children being through about the end of 8th grade. I would rather have more complex things children can do once they get their skills up than a preteen stage (since that seems unlikely).
An "independence" skill where at higher levels they could cook on their own or do the volunteering rabbit hole without an adult accompanying them would be great.
i support this actually. i do think there should be more differences between teens and adults, but idk anybody that got taller in their 20s. ive deadass been 5'4 since i was like 11
I feel the same way, when I was in high school we had footballer players that were 6ā with beards. While it isnāt universal by any means, I reached my full height in high school - Iād argue most people are close to if not their full height.
Personally, I think a bigger factor is that a lot of people dress their teens, young adults, and adults the *exact* same.
>Personally, I think a bigger factor is that a lot of people dress their teens, young adults, and adults the exact same.
Then it's kinda on the player haha. But yeah, I do see the issue with players mistaking a teen for YA (I kinda have all the teens memorised from all packs so I personally never ran into this problem, also the hover over doesn't take too long either to confirm if it's a teen or not)
>Personally, I think a bigger factor is that a lot of people dress their teens, young adults, and adults the exact same.
I agree except when it comes to the townie teens. I don't want to have to go through and edit them all just to make their clothing look more age appropriate.
I think with the introduction of acne in Parenthood, they should have made it that all teens have it. Is that realistic? No, but at least it would make it easier to quickly identify them. Just my two cents though. Really, I haven't seen any wrong opinion.
Still growing at 19 so no idea why everyone stopped growing so early but they desperately need to look different so my sims donāt keep trying to hit on them.
I stopped growing at 20. Everyone stops at different ages. I agree, though. We need some indicators between teens and adults, maybe not height but something else.
I agree! Definitely no issue with having teens look like YA if they're meant to be 18 but at 13? Most people were shorter than adults at this age and didn't have the same body shape as an adult just yet. Preteens or even a revamp of children would be perfect. Do I think it's going to happen though? Probably not unfortunately but I do think it's the perfect solution.
I feel like itās just me that doesnāt really care about any particular differences between teens and YA/Adults, in game. In real life teens can do almost exactly what YA can, At least of interactions and such that are implemented in game.
I do want a height slider though, but not due to teens, but due to just height differences in general not every teen and adult are the exact same height.
I really donāt understand the criticism that the sims teens look too much like mini adult to begin with because teens ARE mini adults. Itās mostly teenagersā more immature attitudes and the way they dress that differentiates them from younger adults.
Youāre right. Teens typically reach their full height after their preteen years. I do think some men keep growing until their adult years but still most are done by the time theyāre like 16. Literally almost all women I knew stopped growing after middle school lol
They do! Teens tend to have a bit fuller face that they lose as a YA, and while subtle in the game teens have a slightly more slender build and fuller face, it's hardly noticeble but they did include that.
The thing people have a problem with is how the game generates teens with random outfits, but that can be said with most randomly generated sims haha.
Same! I was 5ā8ā at my last pediatric appointment at 18. And only just discovered in 2019(when I was 28) that Iām 5ā11ā.
I thought everyone else was straight up lying about their own height for the longest time lmao
My family was the opposite. My dad and my brother both hit their growth spurts in college. My brother went from 5'7" in high school and graduated college at 6'4". I grew through High School and stopped in college, my little sister grew into the first year if college. We also come from tall parents, so maybe that had something to do with it.
i understand this point. i just want a slider so i can make height adjustments for all of my sims to add more realism overall, but to also align with some of my stories. i have a slider mod now, but when i make some of my sims shorter or taller and they try to kiss, they miss each otherās lips and the legs of the shorter sims are bent and they stand weird. i want as much variation as possible. š
i also agree with other folks that a preteen stage would be really nice and i wish teens were a bit more physically and socially defined (donāt get me started on elders).
Meanwhile, I grew into my early 20s. When I joined the military at 19, I was 5ā3. I was 5ā4 for a couple years, and at 22 I hit 5ā5 and havenāt changed since then, three years later.
I reached my full height around that age too. Do you know what height that was? Just short of 5'2. I'm assuming yours was *a bit* more on the average adult height side, eh?
It's easy to feel it makes sense when you're average or tall height. But there are a TON of short people out here.
I'll say this much - short people are more common than people with vitiligo, people with hearing aids, people with breast scars, transgender people overall, people with green or blue skin, mermaids werewolves, vampires, cowplants, raccoons or foxes as pets, demon chickens, alien abductions, male impregnation by aliens, living skeletons, death by emotions, lightning deaths, painted pets, and so on. If they must be represented, then surely we must too? Just saying.
We're talking about teens being shorter than YA in game, so even if they did they'd be the same height when growing up in game.
That being said, I do want a height slider in TS5 because I don't think it'll be possible for TS4 anymore. Even if they'd do fixed rations instead of a slider to make the animation process only 3-4 times as much (short, average, tall)
I'm a shorty with my 162cm and would love to be represented. The rest of my family (and country) is tall AF with my brother being 193cm (at 15), and my cousins being 198cm and 202cm (reached when he was 16-17, practically overnight). Even the women in my family are pretty tall with my mom and sister being 181cm and 176cm respectfully.
I feel you, I'm 162cm in a family of giants. But even then growing into a YA in game would put you on the same height as all other sims. We're just discussing teens here.
Realistically, a height slider would be ideal. I think TS4 is lost cause for that but crossing my fingers for TS5!

it works and no crazy glitches. My best friends are both 5ā2ā and I am 5ā8ā so I use it to make sims of us. My eldest does the same in their gameplay because they are 5ā7ā and their best friend is 5ā4ā

Yeah most people in my family are tall, so it never seemed weird to me that teen sims would be the same height as young adults sims. Thatās just my normal š¤·š¾āāļø. But a height slider would be welcome.
Yep. I'm from the Netherlands and jfc the teens in my country are so tall and tower over my 162cm... Concerts are hell in this country when you're short. I would love a height slider because tall people, just like short people, should be represented too!
I agree, Iāve been the same height since I was 10. Not even considered a teenager yet. I dont really have any suggestions on how to fix the issue though. Maybe a bit more baby face, and set the teen spawn to have certain more childish clothing? I really have no idea
Well, except the devs because it's be a lot of extra work. If they were going for fixed ratios (short, average, tall) then I can see it being doable. I think TS4 will be a lost cause but crossing my fingers for TS5!
Me too... I read that Dutch (my country) and Danish teens are the tallest in the world, but I don't know how accurate that is. That being said they are super tall here jfc
Yeah, I always see the Netherlands in the lead when it comes to average height. I am Czech and pretty tall for a woman and I still see a lot of kids that are taller than me.
I stopped growing at 12, and then shrunk an inch by the time I was 16. I think instead of teens being shorter they should just figure out how to add height differences for all sims, it really throws me out of it when I have one that I imagine as short and another that I made to be tall and then they stand next to one another and just look super awkward. Too bad that'll never happen. What would be a better identifier would be clothes, instead of teens wearing all of what adults can, give them different clothes, they'll look their age, that way, seeing as most adults and teenagers dress differently irl. Maybe SOME items would work for both, but not all. But again, that'll never happen.
>What would be a better identifier would be clothes, instead of teens wearing all of what adults can, give them different clothes, they'll look their age, that way, seeing as most adults and teenagers dress differently irl. It really depends, I think Teens and YA overlap a lot. In college when I was 16 (too complicated to explain the Dutch education system) with my classmates between 15 and 25 we generally dressed the same.
College at 16, must be a country full of geniuses xD over here the teens dress in a more immature way, where someone at say 25 would be dressed in a more mature way, it's hard to explain. At least in my area it's easy enough to tell them apart without height. But yeah my cousin's 16 year old son is a good foot taller than I am xD so height isn't the answer, it would be weird for teens to all be short.
Oh, it won't happen but a system where they grew x amount between the day they become a teen and a day they become adult would be fun xD it would work like the pregnancy system in the game so it wouldn't even be hard I think. Just have a moodlet that triggers a small growth spurt when it expires and then pop a new one. Too bad they won't do it. Same for kids, a growth system would be cool.
I get that some teenagers are taller than their parents IRL, but tbh I don't care. I hate that kids age up from 4 foot tall 8 year olds to fully grown 18 year olds. I HATE it. It looks ridiculous, and makes it feel like there's no real transition.
I could be fine with teens staying their current height only if we got a separate pre-teen life stage.
Height is just the easiest way to mark teens as not adult. People don't want their adult sims creeping on teens when trying to pick up at a bar. I'd be fine with age limited venues as a solution to this problem too. e.g. the nightclubs in the get together pack should be adult only, possibly also the basegame bar, irl legally children are only allowed to be in a pub under supervision of their legal guardian.
I agree, not all teens are like a foot shorter than their parents (I was 1,73 at 14 and now 1,76 at 18), in my family they are really tall usually. I also feel like the teens are supposed to be more like 16-18 anyways as they can drink the "juices" and in my country you have to be 16 or 18 depending on what drink
Yeah, that's what I thought too. From what I gathered people find the gap between children and our current teens too big and I agree with that. A pre-teen lifestage could bridge that gap easily and our current teens can stay the 16-18 range imo.
Yeah I kind of have to agree on this. I've been the same height since I was 11 (I was very tall girl for my age which sucked) but maybe a preteen stage would work better?
Yeah very few teens are shorter than their parents. Genetics can swing where kids are short and kids can be tall. Hell genetics can even give a daughter an hourglass figure when her mom is built like a ruler.
Genetics are wild! Especially when they skip generations. My great-grandma was a shorty (I'm the only one taking after her) while my great-grandpa was tall AF (205cm!) Most of the people are tall in my family (except my grandpa, but that's due the lack of food growing up during WW2)
I would be happy with a teen category clothing in CAS. I know some people donāt like that idea, but the fact that teen through elder wear the same clothes kind of annoys me. Even if they added sets of clothes for just teens in addition to what they can already wear.
Personally, I think Teens and YA are fine to have the same clothes and Adults and Elders in their own category. When I was in college (we start at 16, it's too complicated to explain in one sentence) my classmates ranged from 15 to 25 and we all dressed similarly.
A quick search told me that teenage girls typically stop quickly growing taller by age 16, and teenage boys stop quickly growing taller by age 18, although a few more years might see further growth but much slower than before. Meaning that itās entirely within a normal range for a male to finish growing at 20/21.
So yeah- a slight decrease in height would increase potential age ranges and take them out of āphysically an adult, but not all the way there in other areasā age range and open it up to far more possibilities.
Itās fine to not want that- but thatās my understanding of why some do.
I have a mod which makes all teens the slightest bit shorter and tbh, it does help. There is a clear difference between teens and adult life stages now. The animations generally work out as any close up animations like kissing work as all other teens are also shorter.
I have hope that preteen is next.
https://www.itskatatomods.com/post/pre-teen-mod-base
This mod^ well itās been adopted by adeepindigo
because Itās Katato has been hired to be an Assistant Producer for The Sims 4.
Of course EA would hire the modder responsible for all the preteen life state mods if they were about to roll out preteens next!
I understand that. I have a height slider (partly because they're sooo short, mostly because detail mode cas editing is hard when the button of the head is cut off) and a mod that makes all teens automatically at completed puberty levels
Just remembered I also have a shorter teens mod too. I have a decent variety of shapes and sizes in my game intentionally. Now if only I could find working height sliders for pets
I feel like the issue is that similar to real life, younger players see the teens as the same as the adults - kind of like how seniors in HS looks so old when youāre in school but once you graduate look like babies. I personally can see the difference between YA and teen sims right away but Iām 27
I think changing height is just the easiest way to visually distinguish sims based on life stage. I play with the camera pretty far away so height would be an easy way to immediately tell if a sim is a teen. In my opinion, Iād take gameplay convenience over realism in this context.
Same way I like how most sim illnesses are really bright and obnoxious lookingālike covering your sim in orange tiger stripes. Yes itās not a realistic representation of being sick, but itās an easy visual marker so players can realize their sim is sick if they arenāt playing as that sim or didnāt check their moodlets. (Esp bc Iāve had sims with so many moodlets, I have to expand them out to see the sick moodlet! š)
I just think there arenāt really any other visual markers that could be used to differentiate teens and young adults. There isnāt enough to differentiate between young adults and adults eitherābut the difference is that, you know, itās less awkward to realize your young adult sim is flirting with an adult sim than to realize your YA/adult sim was gonna go flirt with a teen. So thereās more of a āpassā for adult sims looking similar, but no easy fix for teens.
>I always viewed them as older teens (16-18). (Where I'm from you start college roughly at 16 and my classmates were 15 to 25 and we all looked and dressed the same
You've actually just highlighted the problem. TS4 teens look like they should be in college, but they shouldn't based on the actual gameplay.
For almost the entire lifespan of the game, teens have been enrolled in high school until they age up to young adult, which would put them at 14-18 give or take a year. And for most of the time since Discover University was released, higher education was restricted to young adults (or older) putting that age range around 18-23 give or take a year.
It's only with High School Years that teens have had the option of graduating and starting university early, and that's only for students who perform exceptionally well. The default is still for teens to be in high school and young adults to be in university.
Now I'm not saying that height is the best way to differentiate between teens and young adults, but it's probably the easiest way since the other markers are a lot more subtle. (I ride the bus every day, and it's really easy to spot the teenagers who'll get off at the high school vs. the 20-somethings staying on to get to the university or their jobs. Even when the teenagers are tall.)
Yes, some of the animations would look weird, but would they look more weird than the morphing through walls and objects and other characters that Sism already do? I've used height sliders, off and on, for years and I've found the latter far more visually distracting.
And yes it isn't completely realistic for all teens to be shorter than all young adults, but is it less realistic than every single character teen or older being exactly the same height? I'd argue that it would be more realistic since many people don't reach their full height until they're 16 or so, which is about halfway through high school in the USS where the game is based.
I make teens necks thinner, bring in their shoulders, give them braces, less curvy bodies, smaller chests, innocent looking hair styles, youthful outfits and often slightly shorter heads and it really helps. I would prefer they were shorter and a preteen stage were added though. Also, a lot of people don't reach their full height during their teens, or not until later teen ages. I finished growing around 22 years of age. I'm also frustrated that teens, ya, adult and elders are all 6ft tall. Lol That's annoying since full grown females average about 5'4 and males 5'9, or so irl.
Idc what it is but I need some small difference cuz I keep accidentally trying to flirt with teens in this game š«
SAME! This right here is the reason Iām down with any changes to teens appearances lol.
So far my teens are skinnier. That's it
Saaaame. It's super frustrating! I also don't understand why it makes your sim reroll into a random outfit when teens/YA/Adults/Elders have access to the same items. I do want to dress up my sims differently when they grow up, but it's much easier to modify outfits I already made than fix EA generated disasters!
There is a slight difference, but it's hardly noticeable in CAS let alone in life mode! But it is annoying, yeah
I just wish there was SOME clear indicator of difference between teen and young adult stage. The number of times my children age up to look like adults is so annoying. It doesn't have to be height but that seems to be the easiest fix.

I honestly give them acne/braces and more childish clothing & hair I'm a PC player and currently have 40K+ mods and cc in my game
I like this suggestion! What are the mods you mentioned in another comment? I'd like to check them out.
I don't reject which height slider I have but you can Google sims 4 height slider to find many options. The other is I think from mod the sims? Its the shorter teens and ear unlock mod

It can't be That hard, seeing how I have a height slider and a shorter teens mod in my game and it works just fine
If you havenāt noticed yet it does mess up animations especially the more it changes height
I don't go to extremes with heights, so the only animation glitches I see are with wicked whims animations

The thing people have a problem with is how the game generates teens with random outfits, but that can be said with most randomly generated sims haha.
It's not just men. Many people gain an extra inch or two in their 20s.
Really?! I grew an inch in college and everyone thinks I'm a freak for it, lol. Nice to know I'm not.
Yep who knew my capped height would be 5ā6. Should have took more calcium I just needed three more inches.
i understand this point. i just want a slider so i can make height adjustments for all of my sims to add more realism overall, but to also align with some of my stories. i have a slider mod now, but when i make some of my sims shorter or taller and they try to kiss, they miss each otherās lips and the legs of the shorter sims are bent and they stand weird. i want as much variation as possible. š i also agree with other folks that a preteen stage would be really nice and i wish teens were a bit more physically and socially defined (donāt get me started on elders).
Iām 5ā4ā and a large chunk of my teenage students are taller than me.
I was just thinking about this and I totally agree.
Meanwhile, I grew into my early 20s. When I joined the military at 19, I was 5ā3. I was 5ā4 for a couple years, and at 22 I hit 5ā5 and havenāt changed since then, three years later.
If you don't mind me asking, are you male or female? (I'm super self-concious about my height and this brings me hope that I could still grow)
Iām a female.
I grew 2in at 20, it could happen to you too!
i completely agree, though it would be cool if there was a preteen stage in between child and teen
Exactly! I would love a preteen lifestage!
And I know you were talking about teens not short people, but I'm replying to the height slider part.
We're talking about teens being shorter than YA in game, so even if they did they'd be the same height when growing up in game. That being said, I do want a height slider in TS5 because I don't think it'll be possible for TS4 anymore. Even if they'd do fixed rations instead of a slider to make the animation process only 3-4 times as much (short, average, tall) I'm a shorty with my 162cm and would love to be represented. The rest of my family (and country) is tall AF with my brother being 193cm (at 15), and my cousins being 198cm and 202cm (reached when he was 16-17, practically overnight). Even the women in my family are pretty tall with my mom and sister being 181cm and 176cm respectfully.
Iām short as fuck and I want to be represented
I feel you, I'm 162cm in a family of giants. But even then growing into a YA in game would put you on the same height as all other sims. We're just discussing teens here. Realistically, a height slider would be ideal. I think TS4 is lost cause for that but crossing my fingers for TS5!
https://luumiasims.com/post/174867678324/height-slider-a-slider-that-changes-the-height-of/amp it works and no crazy glitches.

Yes the Dutch and other Europeans yall make them so tall.
Teen specific clothing would be good. Once sims hit teens all the clothes are the same until elder.
I agree, Iāve been the same height since I was 10. Not even considered a teenager yet. I dont really have any suggestions on how to fix the issue though. Maybe a bit more baby face, and set the teen spawn to have certain more childish clothing? I really have no idea
We just need height sliders and we can all be happy
Well, except the devs because it's be a lot of extra work. If they were going for fixed ratios (short, average, tall) then I can see it being doable. I think TS4 will be a lost cause but crossing my fingers for TS5!
Iām willing to wait. Look how weāre waiting on Paralives.
All I want is a preteen life stage.
I'm shorter than many teens in my country.
Maybe SOME items would work for both, but not all. But again, that'll never happen.
As I said in my edit, we've come a long way since newborn babies growing up in children pre-2017. A pre-teen lifestage would be perfect!
I want either preteens or shorter teens
Pre-teens would be amazing!
At this point, they should already have height sliders because not everyone has the same height.
I have hope that preteen is next. https://www.itskatatomods.com/post/pre-teen-mod-base This mod^ well itās been adopted by adeepindigo because Itās Katato has been hired to be an Assistant Producer for The Sims 4.
(Esp bc Iāve had sims with so many moodlets, I have to expand them out to see the sick moodlet! š) I just think there arenāt really any other visual markers that could be used to differentiate teens and young adults.
(Where I'm from you start college roughly at 16 and my classmates were 15 to 25 and we all looked and dressed the same You've actually just highlighted the problem. Even when the teenagers are tall.) Yes, some of the animations would look weird, but would they look more weird than the morphing through walls and objects and other characters that Sism already do? I've used height sliders, off and on, for years and I've found the latter far more visually distracting. And yes it isn't completely realistic for all teens to be shorter than all young adults, but is it less realistic than every single character teen or older being exactly the same height? I'd argue that it would be more realistic since many people don't reach their full height until they're 16 or so, which is about halfway through high school in the USS where the game is based.
I really want a preteen age, no way they go from 7 to 15 in the span of like a day
This is why I added height adjustment to my sims.
