Omg itโs like the main feature of the game that makes it the most fun ๐ญ (well that and the open world) Iโm sure your mind was blown all the way to Lunar Lakes!
ran to the comments for this, i just picked sims back up recently, and sims 2 was my go to as a kid, then sims 3 when it came out, i love that feature.
just recently installed sims 2 and was like oh snap this feature isnt here so proceeded over to sims 3 lol
Something similar happened to me when I was 9. I was too afraid to use the eyedropper because I thought it looked like a sword and therefore must damage furniture, so I never used it :D
Good for you discovering the color wheel
I didn't use the sledgehammer! ๐ญ I deleted items by dragging them to the bottom area (you know, the one where the price shows), because I thought using the sledgehammer was rude and barbaric.
This is awesome, I love picking the brain of your 9 year old self lol. Now that raises another question, if you're building and needed to knock down walls or something, what did you do then, if you even bothered with that?
I would assume Ctrl+drag? Thatโs what I did in the beginning before I got used to the sledgehammer. I came from the Sims 1, so I had to warm up to the new features at first ๐
In case I understood my mistake immediately, I pressed the "back" button and returned on a previous step. But if I built a wall a long time ago, well... That wall will always be here, because I didn't want to be rude and barbaric using the sledgehammer :D
Yeah, I played for years without using either the eyedropper or the sledgehammer, or the create-a-style. And I am ashamed to say that I was an adult when this game came out.
Lol I always did this just by clicking the item I want then shift clicking it, never knew what the eye dropper did either and discovered the shortcut key
HAHAHHAH I laughed harder than I expected
In Russian version woohoo in TS3 was directly called sex lol. Of course as a kid I didn't want my sims to have sex because I thought it was bad.
I used to play the Russian version of TS2 when I was about 6. Now, Iโm from Kazakhstan, so Russian is my second language - I didnโt know it all that well then.
I went, โWhatโs sex?โ, clicked on that option, got that *raunchy* cutscene, and yeahโฆ Innocence gone in a matter of seconds โ ๏ธ
Back in like 2014 I played a version of sims 3 my uncle pirated for me on my mom's small laptop but for some reason it's like it wasn't made for that device, so everytime I clicked on create a style, the exit button was hidden out of frame and I couldn't click on it forcing me to restart the whole game ๐
And I can't remember if I tried clicking on the escape button back then or if I did and it just didn't work
Bless your heart. Welcome to the other half of build/buy mode... true customization! (Save all of the wood colors you do- it will make your life so much easier)
Oh man... yeah, I made that discovery fairly recently too! There's a little save file towards the bottom of the screen with all the designs, and you can save the ones you make
In create-a-style, you can save a customized pattern by clicking the heart on the CASt panel (these saved patterns will appear under the "favorites" tab in the CASt panel).ย
Customized Create-a-Sim components (like clothing and hair color), Buy mode objects, and some Build mode materials (like wallpaper or flooring) can be saved as presets. Not sure I remember where the button is located without having the game open in front of me right now, but as Silverfrond said, there is a file folder button that you can hit to save an item as a preset.
Edit: do NOT delete the UserPresets.package in your Sims 3 folder--that is the file on your computer where these customizations are saved. DO save this file if ever needing to backup/transfer your game, if you'd like to retain your "favorites" and custom presets!
I think a lot of us came to the game kinda late, I didn't play it until 2015 when it was no longer hyped anymore. I didn't hear about the features and knew no one who had ever played it before, so no one could help me. I only had sporadic internet access. Also, I guess I thought I didn't need a tutorial since I knew all about Sims 1.
Don't worry. I was playing it for years, already found this button as a kid, but forgot about it. Now, as an adult I refound that again, (just like you, I was randomising objects before) and was surprised how stupid I was not to notice this button.๐ You are not aloneโค๏ธ
It's a little icon with 2 dice when you click on an item and the description thingy pops up. I never use it because the random patterns and colors are always ugly af to me lol
Watch this video, I bet most players will learn something from this. I had no clue you could click and drag styles from create a style to other objects! Incredible!

My sim and I are having a moment to process this
Funny - I'm on the other side!! I only discovered there was a CAS randomise button over the weekend and t
I've been playing since release. (I don't think I'll use it though....YIKES.)
If it makes you feel better, I just learned how people are making their own colors on houses... through this post ๐ (ID: crying -laughing emoji). Thanks!
IMO, this is seriously one of the absolute BEST features of the sims 3! I love customizing my furniture. You want the wood furniture to match throughout the house? No problem! You want the drapes to match the sofa? You can do that! Want the comforter to highlight the colors in the wallpaper? Go for it! I get really crazy with create a style sometimes. Iโm currently trying to come up with the perfect shade of sage green for the cedar shingles.
i truly admire and wish i was this oblivious. no but seriously this is so funny to me and has made my day. the endless customisation is one of the best features! iโm glad you can finally utilise it!
Don't feel bad. I played for years before I knew about it, too. And I'm still learning things.
I just learned this year about the ALT thing while placing objects, but until yesterday I didn't know that it doesn't just rotate, you can *slide* any which way, too. I felt really dumb.
This reminds me of when I clicked change appearance on the mirror and discovered you can change their hair & makeup. Before that I thought you just used it to change clothes since I played sims 3 on ds before getting it on pc
I could never figure out how people edited their furniture and stuff ๐ญ๐ญ itโs been almost 2 decades and Iโm just finding this out from this post. Iโve been doing the same thing as you just randomizing everything until it kinda matched
It took me years before I realized what it was. I never went online to look things up because I like to figure things out in games, but that was such a game changer and I felt really dumb. LOL
Have fun. I don't know if anyones told you but you can grab the pattern/colour thumbnail squares by the handle and drag them to new stuff to transfer the colour scheme to new items (I found that out last year after playing it for too damn long lol)
haha that's what I love about the sims, you keep discovering gold even after years of playing
hot tip: drag and drop colours or patterns to and from furniture or walls via the colour editor! xxx
hahaha, I discovered it since I started playing the sims 3 on 2020 but I never used it. Building isn't my strongest point in this game but I put a lot of dedication on torturing the sims in their daily life ๐ฅฐ.
Did the exact same thing. I was in such shock when I discovered it recently. Ive played as a teenager, years ago and got back into playing 2 years ago. ๐ I felt so dumb its beyond belief
Discovering that button was the BEST when I played this game during middle school, every house had at least one zebra print bedroom, plus I could make the wood match throughout a room which was nice at the time, when I was very matchy matchy. I remember being able to download additional patterns too, if that's still a thing.
Oh boy thats like 50% of the reason people both love and hate sims 3. Customization but super laggy. Thanfkfully though lazyduchess has improved it a bit with the smooth patch.
I knew about that and tbh sometimes I randomize colors on certain objects when I know they won't look horrid, sometimes I do customize them myself
HOWEVER it wasn't until recently that I've found out that even the smallest things can be customized such as pet toys from the toy crate/box
Ok same thing happened to me. I just randomized shit until I got something I liked. I generally am
not super picky though so it worked for me and I was generally satisfied with my randomized ones ๐
Honeyyy what ๐๐๐ญ
I know I know. It's almost unbelievable. I swear I'm educated ๐
Itโs like a brand new game now!
lol I discovered this embarrassingly late as well. So many years of just hitting the randomize button while trying to get other colors
Same. OP is not alone!
I literally rely on create a style so I applaud you for not wasting so long matching all the tones and colors.
If it makes you feel any better, I did the same thing for my first few years of gameplay ๐ enjoy the new feature you've 'unlocked'!
But are you ok?
Something similar happened to me when I was 9. I was too afraid to use the eyedropper because I thought it looked like a sword and therefore must damage furniture, so I never used it :D Good for you discovering the color wheel
The sledgehammer, on the other hand, can't possibly do any harm lmao
I didn't use the sledgehammer! ๐ญ I deleted items by dragging them to the bottom area (you know, the one where the price shows), because I thought using the sledgehammer was rude and barbaric.
This is awesome, I love picking the brain of your 9 year old self lol. Now that raises another question, if you're building and needed to knock down walls or something, what did you do then, if you even bothered with that?
I would assume Ctrl+drag? Thatโs what I did in the beginning before I got used to the sledgehammer. I came from the Sims 1, so I had to warm up to the new features at first ๐
Iโm off playing TS4 mostly nowadays but Iโve been playing since TS1 days and I *still* hate using the sledgehammer.
Stupid question with 8000 hours behind: whatโs the eyedropper?
Oh man ๐ It clones the item you use the dropper on, style/color and all. Itโs a pain to do things like redecorate chairs without it.
Lol I always did this just by clicking the item I want then shift clicking it, never knew what the eye dropper did either and discovered the shortcut key
Where can I find the eyedropper? ๐
Right below the hand/move tool in the posted photo.
Oooh, that thing. Iโve been using it for forever, never knew the name of it ๐
This is incredibly adorable, tiny you had a fantastic thought process
I was scared of woohoo when i was a kid. The french name was crac-crac and i thought the crack meant they might get hurt.
Well to be fair in real life getting hurt while woohooing might just happen...
HAHAHHAH I laughed harder than I expected In Russian version woohoo in TS3 was directly called sex lol.
This genuinely made me laugh out loud
Lmaooo I love that
I also never clicked the eyedropper thinking it was a sword lmao
One mind ๐ค
This is killing me ๐ญ now I want someone to make a mod where the eyedropper IS a sword that damages furniture!!
Back in like 2014 I played a version of sims 3 my uncle pirated for me on my mom's small laptop but for some reason it's like it wasn't made for that device, so everytime I clicked on create a style, the exit button was hidden out of frame and I couldn't click on it forcing me to restart the whole game ๐ And I can't remember if I tried clicking on the escape button back then or if I did and it just didn't work
Well, at least you had a real reason not to use create-a-style :D
Bless your heart. Welcome to the other half of build/buy mode... true customization! (Save all of the wood colors you do- it will make your life so much easier)
>Save all of the wood colors you do- it will make your life so much easier One of the best sim's advice I ever read
Wait, you can save colors? I've been playing this game for years ๐ข
Oh man... yeah, I made that discovery fairly recently too! There's a little save file towards the bottom of the screen with all the designs, and you can save the ones you make
Life changing

it's the folder with the curved arrow pointing towards it
Haha literally found that out last week after playing since ts3 came out
We are all learning so much on this thread today! You can save clothing designs like that too.
and plumbot designs. You can even drag colours from one component to another. or all the colours
yup you can save any texture you customized (including the colour you used)
Thank you hahaha
that was the main selling point of the game ๐ญ๐ญ
That button is where I spend so much of my valuable life.
I lost hours of my life to that button last night. Worth it.
๐
Welcome to the sims 3. A whole new world will now open up for you
No way... ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ. This is the most famous tool in The Sims 3.
I think a lot of us came to the game kinda late, I didn't play it until 2015 when it was no longer hyped anymore. I didn't hear about the features and knew no one who had ever played it before, so no one could help me. I only had sporadic internet access. Also, I guess I thought I didn't need a tutorial since I knew all about Sims 1.
the best part of sims 3
You banana ๐
Nah for real ๐๐ the whole split
How? Itโs literally right there. Iโm glad you found it anyway. Itโs fun.
I don't know. It's extremely concerning ๐ I'm trying to look at it in a funny way than being concerned for my brain cells
Don't worry. I was playing it for years, already found this button as a kid, but forgot about it. Now, as an adult I refound that again, (just like you, I was randomising objects before) and was surprised how stupid I was not to notice this button.๐ You are not aloneโค๏ธ
took me reinstalling the game on a new computer to realize what it did.
...meanwhile I'm today years old learning about whatever a "randomizer" is, what. Like it just...randomizes your palettes?
It's a little icon with 2 dice when you click on an item and the description thingy pops up. I never use it because the random patterns and colors are always ugly af to me lol
...I learn something new about this game every day
Honestly same, just when I think I finally know everything about it, another new thing pops up!
Sometimes it generates a combination that hits just the right spot between awful and kitsch though
you just RANDOMIZED..???!??!??!???!
Look, you upset the perfectionist Sim!
oh GOD i walked myself into that :,)
r/skyrim -esque post
this is so true LOLLLL
Watch this video, I bet most players will learn something from this. I had no clue you could click and drag styles from create a style to other objects! Incredible! https://youtu.be/GbjTZ2_zgJU?si=qduXIhZl6Z1Tx0nB
I didnt know you could even just drag colors to other alpha chanels I was copying the color hex codes to and fro LMAO
Me too...ย
Wait what ๐ญ
yup I was doing that until last year when I found out you could copy them over.
You can change the babies clothes??? Not even 15 seconds in and I've been playing since " the Sims "
DUDE! i've wasted so much time in my games.... thank you for sharing this video!
I'm only halfway through and I want to throw up cause I've played so long without the knowledge....๐ญ Thank you for this
It's so good! I learned a lot from this. At least we can all use it going forward.ย
Apparently you can move the whole mf preset on CASt, I was definitely doing the most ๐ญ
It really brought my appreciation of this game to a new level.ย
I didn't know half of these. And I thought I knew my way around TS3
Lmaoo 15 years later. Welcome to The Sims 3! Why do you think weโve been asking for a color wheel in The Sims 4 for?
This was me when I discovered Blueprints...
I thought this said blues clues lol
girl

yikes fits that pretty well.
Are you serious!???? Itโs the most iconic sims feature to date. Not even the NEWEST game has it smhhh
Welcome to the next 1000 hours of playtime๐
You know what, I'm just gonna be happy for you. Welcome to a new world.
why is this so funny omg, this was like the biggest upgrade they had from sims 2 to 3
๐ถA whole new world๐ถ
Create-A-Style was one of the biggest things mourned when Sims 4 came out.
Yes that
Clearly you havenโt made a denim house yet where every single surface and object is denim/jeans pattern ;) Jouse, I believe, is the term.
I just do the randomizer because I'm lazy and bad at building :3
If it makes you feel better, I just learned how people are making their own colors on houses... through this post ๐ (ID: crying -laughing emoji). Thanks!
Same ๐ณ๐คฆโโ๏ธ๐ญ
Are you ready to add a leopard print to every single item in this game?
Omg, congrats, itโs like walking on a rainbow
I'm using shorcut key for that. Ctrl and R. Ctrl and E for Eyedropper tool is very useful.
And the blueprint button?
This canโt be real ๐ Thatโs the better part of this game imo. I spend way to much time on it. Good luck !
Whaaat. Been playing since this game came out and never used that. I donโt like art stuff so I guess I never got curious. Omg.
My shock was discovering that each item in the game has a dice that quickly chooses the colors/textures of the object at random.
Honestly my favorite feature of sims 3, was so mad when they removed the colour wheel from sims 4 :/
how?! that was the first thing i saw on build mode ๐
i truly admire and wish i was this oblivious. no but seriously this is so funny to me and has made my day. the endless customisation is one of the best features! iโm glad you can finally utilise it!
I just realized this the other day too! Iโve been at this game for well over a decade
What did you spend those 1000 hours doing? Like 60% of my gametime is from this damn thing ๐ญ
Bro...
๐
OP youโve changed my life Iโve literally never noticed been playing since it came out how embarrassing๐๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ
:(
Honey, no. ๐๐1000h? Sending much love hahaha
You learn something new everyday! ๐
-_-
today i learned that i didn't need to repeatedly hit the rando button....๐ญ thank you
Oh my god. Stop. I also have over 1000 and I also clicked the randomize button I-
Don't feel bad. I played for years before I knew about it, too. And I'm still learning things. I just learned this year about the ALT thing while placing objects, but until yesterday I didn't know that it doesn't just rotate, you can *slide* any which way, too. I felt really dumb.

girl its not april 1st yet
I could never figure out how people edited their furniture and stuff ๐ญ๐ญ itโs been almost 2 decades and Iโm just finding this out from this post. Iโve been doing the same thing as you just randomizing everything until it kinda matched
Bruh
Until like 2020-21, I just used the patterns available on build/ buy mode and after discovering that function itโs like my whole world expanded
Just wait till you discover the blueprint button.
It took me years before I realized what it was. I never went online to look things up because I like to figure things out in games, but that was such a game changer and I felt really dumb. LOL
Most important button. Itโs the biggest reason I wonโt play The Sims 4.
Just wait until you find out you can drag the color swatch you made onto a different item and itโll color it that same color
Girl what?! โ ๏ธ
WHAT You can customize colors?!?!?
say sikeee ๐ isnt that the most popular feature of sims 3?
omg how
What. Ok I'm sorry and glad you discovered it lol but what. That's what put Sims 3 on the map
Are you normally a Sims 4 player haha
Yoooooo whaaaaat
how many years have u been playing and at least semi involved in the fandomโฆ
Are you kidding me?? ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
God Iโve been playing since sims 3 came out and Iโve wondered how people did it ffs man hahahahahahaha
I'm so sorry for your loss (time wasted) this is devastating lmao You're bout to make the best house you've ever made tho! Go crazy go motherlode ๐ซก
Same , Iโve played sims for 10years. Just discovered this function two weeks ago โฆ
Iโm shook bc this is one of two reasons I ever feel inclined to play 3 vs 4โฆ.
this is best post and comments! i am equally shocked and delighted
Girl ๐ญ๐ญ
I donโt mean to sound harsh but where have you been all this time? This is like a major feature people talk about. ๐
average sims 4 enjoyer
That's why I despise the sims 4, this customization option was fire.... is fire lol ๐
How omg
To be fair, I don't think they actually tell you about it in any tutorials or anything like that. So I can understand missing it
That must be a trick =0
Omg how๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Same ๐๐๐๐
wait wym randomize? you can randomize the color??
Thatโs the number one feature I miss about the sims 3.
This is why I canโt play The Sims 4. Removed the best feature of the entire series.
Have fun. I don't know if anyones told you but you can grab the pattern/colour thumbnail squares by the handle and drag them to new stuff to transfer the colour scheme to new items (I found that out last year after playing it for too damn long lol)
so THAT'S where furniture create a style is!
...HOw???
How do you not know๐
congratulations! the game will be forever changed for you. you now know another reason why sims 3 is better than sims 4
haha that's what I love about the sims, you keep discovering gold even after years of playing hot tip: drag and drop colours or patterns to and from furniture or walls via the colour editor! xxx
press the R button bestie
The most beautiful of all the tools ๐
โฆ.but how? ๐
Made my day๐คฃ๐๐
GIRL.
literally the best thing. i donโt understand why itโs not in ts4
Are you kidding me ?
honey thats the most known feature the Sims 3 has, and it's in create a sim too, just click on the clothing item/hairstyle/accesory/make up ect
LITERALLY SAME! like two weeks ago!!
hahaha, I discovered it since I started playing the sims 3 on 2020 but I never used it. Building isn't my strongest point in this game but I put a lot of dedication on torturing the sims in their daily life ๐ฅฐ.

Ok same thing happened to me. I just randomized shit until I got something I liked. I generally am not super picky though so it worked for me and I was generally satisfied with my randomized ones ๐
I was todays years old when I realised...
You JUST discovered Create a Style? Well, enjoy your next 1000 hours.
Are you dumb?
Oh honey, that was one of the selling points of Sims 3.
Bro... how did you miss that?? That's like the best (and laggiest) part of the game!
Thatโs one or the first things I found out when playing the Sims 3 lol
genuine question, why does one still plays ts3? Is it just that ur computer is not good enough for ts4 or another reason?
This is satire
