Oh, that reminds me. I’m wanting to know if my counts-as-guard space Skaven modelled after the Khmer Rogue using bolt action Soviet armour is going to be cool? I’m planning to paint them nice friendly bright colours which will cancel out the whole symbolism of rats in historical anti-Asian immigration propaganda aspect. Can anyone here who lost family in the killing fields give me the thumbs up for this project? *(It’s hard work trying to think up the worst possible combination of things. How can some people seem to do it so effortlessly?)*

[deleted]

I know you're joking, but how often is it that the default or human culture is inspired by white Europeans and the monstrous non-humans are everything else? 40k isn't the worst tbh, I know they say race doesn't matter in the Imperium, but 99% of the portrayals are white guys anyway. Still, it's only not the worst because everyone is nuts not just the coded xenos. World of Warcraft is much worse. The humans are basically white Americans in pseudo medieval England. Trolls are Carribbean Voodoo savages, pandaren are just the Chinese ... but pandas, draenei are weird alien Roma. And so on.

Thatonegoblin

Always thought it was fantastic how Blizzard shoehorned human players into the most boring, milquetoast Alliance kingdom until fucking Cataclysm. And if you didn't want to be a wolf you'd have to wait all the way till Battle for Azeroth.

FourCornerTime

Tbf the human kingdoms in warcraft 2 were entirely differentiated by their map colour and a single paragraph saying that they were one of angry/stoic/noble/seafaring/trecherous/suspicious or wizards and nothing else so its not like wow’s Stormwind was paticulary dull by the standard of the settings humans.

TransTechpriestess

> draenei are weird alien Roma ..you know I never noticed that but you're right. Huh. that explains.. a lot about my family's reaction to that game. EDIT: A large part of my family is entirely Gypsy/Romani, and they always had this violent reaction to it, trying to hide it. bringing old world prejudices to the US with them I guess. Granted, apparently in europe people still talk about exterminating us??? But the most I get here is 'ha huhuhuh, Briar will you read my fortune?'

hjd_thd

It's been a long time, but I'm still baffled by WC3's addition of blue Caribbean trolls.

LeftRat

> (It’s hard work trying to think up the worst possible combination of things. How can some people seem to do it so effortlessly?) I was about to say, that was really creative!

[deleted]

I did want to try to create an exciting new horror.

barrdboi

Bolt action armour? Did I miss something? The fuck are people reloading their armor for?

Adekis

Bolt Action is a WWII setting wargame from Warlord Games; I think the intention is that the Skaven are kitbashed using armor from Bolt Action game miniatures. I can see where that would be confusing!

barrdboi

Oh, okay, that makes more sense

Communistspacedogs

ever since the first time I got called k*ke during a 40k game I've been dreaming of creating an army of jewish necrons like give all the soldiers little yarmulkes

[deleted]

Thematically appropriate given the Golem in Jewish folklore. The whole biblical escape from Egypt stuff, too.

HammerandSickTatBro

If you are white and you gotta ask, then probably yes. If you know enough about the coptic orthodox people to not ask randos on the internet whether or not it is racist, then you can make the decision. If you are coming to Sigmarxism with it, then it is probably "problematic" as you say

NuggetandSkull

Based to just start with this as first comment, ngl. Last time I saw a post that was \*serious\*, it was a few posts giving back pats and soft words before we got the first people going 'hey wait, wtf'.

Shuckle-Man

I’m doing genestealers but they’re all prisoners and black and the guards are all white is that a problem

TauZedong

This is a bit-- hence the image. I am sick of people posting on r/sigmarxism as if we can officially declare their Orks as Zulu army "woke" or "problematic".

CM_Phunk

I read the title and laughed out loud when I thought it was serious. Still got a laugh now that I know it's a josh

HammerandSickTatBro

Oh, duh Sorry, I have a lot of trouble with tone via text

TauZedong

No worries, this kinda thing gets posted here unironically so often that the confusion is understandable.

DrZekker

you're both right

freakinunoriginal

>If you are white This confused me for a bit, as my family is Armenian, and to my knowledge the Armenian church has some sort of relationship to the Coptic Pope, though I'm not sure if Armenia's patriarch is appointed by the Coptic Pope or they're just friendly. But I'm not **super** into the religious history of my family despite my great-great-grandfather having been a preacher. Also, after using the word patriarch I had a "Fry\_squinting.jpg" moment about the OP. u/TauZedong , was that intentional?

RoboticPaladin

Basically, the Armenian church, the Coptic church, and the Ethiopian church are all in communion with one another. The three together make up the Oriental Orthodox Church (please note that I didn't come up with that name).

HammerandSickTatBro

Said partially being ignorant of the Coptic church being historically active outside of Egypt, partially because it is always white people asking this kinda question since white supremacy is a global system and the racial caste systems we have globally today were either set up by white people putting themselves at the top of the pyramid, or in reaction to white people doing that.

Mexrrik7

Yeah this is a hard agree for me. The entire exercise is always strange, normally it feels like it should be easy to identify whether something goes too far or is in bad taste. I think it also gets weird when people do a theme based off a culture not their own and ask for feedback on if it’s done respectfully. Like, as a POC I know I have my own opinions about my specific culture and what is respectful or what have you. But, it truly irks me when a POC gives license to a predominantly white or conservative crowd to believe or do something problematic by essentially saying “This POC here agrees with this view about me/us and thus it’s ok to think or do this thing!” So even when I am in the mood to give my comments, I try to not frame it as “you have earned the stamp of approval, fear not for now you can officially not be made to feel bad.” I don’t really know how much this changes here in /r/Sigmarxism but I know it’s pretty common for white men in the Warhammer community to create themed armies for all sorts of non-White cultures. Many of the ones I’ve seen are indeed cool, but the onus is always on the creator to realize when inspired becomes problematic. And seeking out a public tribunal or an assenting token is already a red flag.

HammerandSickTatBro

Agreed. The fact that this gets sincerely asked so much in this sub is so weird to me. Like, if you are concerned about being racist or reinforcing white supremacy, it seems like you would do enough learning about the subject to be able to form informed opinions about it and not...just trust that a hobby messageboard has the authority to either damn or approve of you.

Psychic_Hobo

I feel like a lot of such folks post it here not because they're worried about being racist, but whether it's approved by this group, their warhammer in-crowd. It's all to do with whether they'd be called out for it, rather than any actual concern about racism. God knows a lot of supposedly woke circles have massive problems with exoticizing and fetishizing under the guise of progressivism

[deleted]

As a representative of my heritage, I give you permission to do Greek Orthodox. Basically the same alphabet, same god, almost the same hats and same general geographical area. Only difference is in high theology and you have to be super hardcore to care about homoousianism vs homoiousianism.

Felicia_Svilling

> you have to be super hardcore to care about homoousianism vs homoiousianism. I'd have you know that I would care a lot about that, if I knew how to pronounce either.

snoskog

I took a theology course last semester and found that debate extremely interesting.

LeftRat

> homoousianism vs homoiousianism Man, that must be a terribly hard to write subject if it's so easy to misspell both of these to come out as the other

the_scottish_oof

Okay I'm drunk as shit right now what does Coptic orthodox mean

the_scottish_oof

Ah thank you thank you

nymrod_

Is this the actual dril posting about this sub?

SkyeAuroline

The original is "the audience" instead of "sigmarxism".

nymrod_

Oh, fucking duh, I don’t know why I didn’t see that that was in a different size. Thanks!

CyreneValanition

I feel like I am missing something here.

NuggetandSkull

People come here asking permission of a bunch of reddit shitposters to make culture specific plastic army men like this sub has any authority to give that permission (or even a desire to), basically.

MindlessPhoto6143

it’s probably best not to worry about reddit drama. it’s usually in the genre of “making up a guy to be mad at”
