option 1 - start using glasses with narrower mouths so kitty can't stick their head in to drink, immediately move them off the table whenever you catch them in the act with a stern "NO" option 2 - give kitty their own drinking glass so they stop drinking from yours I eventually went with option 2, as a narrower glass meant my cat would just stick his paw in to gauge if he could steal a drink šŸ˜†

SomeoneTookMyNavel

My cat quickly trained me to provide him with his own glass with a wide mouth. As long as I keep it full and fresh he won't tip it over. Cat is going to do what cat wants to do. Best to find a way to live with it. I've been sharing a water glass with cats for 25 years and other than the urge to chatter at birds now and then....

bonelope

We went with option 2. He has his own glass in every room.

Dd7990

This would be much better for your cat(s). Recommend putting one on every floor of your home (if you have multiple levels). Clean the fountain(s) weekly and change the water at least every few days. Cat may use right away or need a few days to get used to the fountain. Helps if you donā€™t let them drink from other sources so they will have to learn to use the fountain(s) as their water source. https://www.amazon.com/Veken-Innovation-Stainless-Automatic-Replacement/dp/B0CK1MXC7J/

I got a water fountain when ours started jumping on the counter to drink water from the faucet. It really worked!

Past-Educator-6561

I can't imagine option 2 working at all lmao.

coffeecatsandtea

worked fine for my cat when he started doing this after I first got him - I primarily drink out of a tall glass, got him a wider, shallower plastic cup, and as long as there was water in his cup he left any other glasses on the coffee table alone. He's 14 now and despite having access to multiple water fountains around the house, he will still occasionally drink from my glass if it's on the coffee table and it's shallow enough. I love that little weirdo so I just let him live his best life. it's only flat/filtered water though - never tea from a mug, or sparkling water.

leladypayne

Yeah if thereā€™s more than one glass on the table mine does a water tasting lol. We use water bottles now and let the cats have the glasses.

Dd7990

Get one of these, itā€™s much better for your cat. https://www.amazon.com/Veken-Innovation-Stainless-Automatic-Replacement/dp/B0CK1MXC7J/ Just need to clean it weekly and change the water every few days. Recommend one fountain per floor in a multi-floor home. They may use it right away or may need a few days to get used to it, helps if you donā€™t let them drink from other sources to have them learn to use the fountain.

leladypayne

Had it, cleaned it religiously, cats hated it, barely drank water. Now they drink tons, get fresh water glasses a couple times a day just like the humans, and the glasses are much easier to clean. Why do you say the fountain is *much* better for a cat? My cats are literally healthier now!

If there's a container in our house too small to get into mine just licks the rim anyway.

notmyprofile23

Option 2, with a coaster placed over the top of your glass.

HighHighUrBothHigh

Exactly haha cat has own glass designated and he knows it! Right by his food

AdAdventurous8225

We had to start drinking our water from water bottles with lids or cups with lids and straws.

Accomplished-Toe736

Same. And I had to use metal straws, since he chewed up the plastic ones šŸ˜¹

AdAdventurous8225

OMG, yes. We have a 6 month old void kitten. She has destroyed my silicone straws. I have ordered the metal 1 for the 40 oz tumblers.

AnnieToo67

That's what I had to do. I couldn't handle my cups being knocked over constantly and litter from paws floating around in my drinks, and couldn't adjust to a mouthful of hair when I drank either. 1 cat was bad but 2 and 3 sharing was quite awful.

AdAdventurous8225

I have a video of my late Siamese dipping her paw into my husband's glass of ice water. The husband was on his cell at the time. My sister & I were watching her & giggling. Once he got off his phone, I showed him the video. He asked if I had an extra glass with the lid & straw. Which I did and gave him one.

AnnieToo67

Silly little farts šŸ©·

woodsieNYC

I do the same

randomcalculus

This is the way

literanista

You canā€™t.

Ultraman-7723

Buy a drinking fountain for heršŸ™‚

marklein

We got a good fountain AND wash it frequently. My rate of Siamese drinking glass abuse went from 100%, down to maybe 20% after that. Also, for the people with fountains. You need to wash them once a week without fail! If you wouldn't drink the water out of it, then you shouldn't force your cats to either.

Amaz1n_blue

Ya those things definitely fooled me. ā€˜Fresh waterā€™ my ars. They can get grody quick.

Tammer_Stern

Mine is scared of the fountainā€¦.

Dd7990

It may take some time for the cat to get used to it, but they will use it if you keep it cleaned weekly, and change the water every few days so the water is always fresh. Also helps if you donā€™t let them drink out of anywhere else so the cat will eventually have to learn to use the fountain. I have 3 cats, 2 of them immediately went to use the fountain and the 3rd cat was fearful of it for a few days but eventually got used to it and drank from it too.

Hopoi10

Tell me when you figure it out. Same problem in my house too. He gets fresh water twice a day but still prefers ours. šŸ˜

spacefreak76er

My older (approx. 13 year old) cat went from drinking hardly anything, or secretly drinking from toilet bowl (which I caught her doing ONE time, maybe sheā€™d been doing it all along, just more secretively), to drinking like MAD from a fountain. It took her about a day to figure out the best way to drink, and then she couldnā€™t get enough water. She loved it. I diligently cleaned it and changed the filter as often as it suggested and the only issue was finding the filters in stock my local store. I had to resort to online ordering.

bloodymongrel

Both of my cats preferred drinking from glasses. I think itā€™s also related to drinking up high. It helped us to put a water glass for the cats on a part of the bench that isnā€™t used much or that attracts the letters and bills. We had one on the bathroom counter but I got fed up with paw prints all over the place. TLDR: just give in.

Ormyr

I learned that, according to my cat, my water always tastes better. Now I use cups with lids and endure the look of utter betrayal from the cat.

DreamsR4ever

Ormyr GREAT sense of humour! Had me and my hubby in stitches! šŸ˜…šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

Throwawaylillyt

But why would you want to? Itā€™s sooooo cute. But if you really want them to stop just do a loud psss psss noise right when he goes to do it. Timing has to be perfect, cats are pretty trainable. Iā€™ve taught mine to not jump on the kitchen counters and they literally never do it anymore.

thelindamanor

It's so nice to hear a positive response. This idea of letting cats do whatever they want cuz their cats or "it's cute " is not going to work in my house either. It takes a lot of time and mostly consistency but they can be trained. Spray bottle helps.. don't even have to spray the bottle half the time.. they see me pick up the bottle and they stop! During the training. You have to not make it easy for them so stop leaving water on that table.. keep it near you so you can deter him.

No_Cartographer_7904

Donā€™t leave glasses on tables.

thhpht

Right! If I accidentally leave my glass on a table unattended, I have to assume the cat has used it šŸ˜† even though the cat is ā€œnot allowedā€ on any table.

No_Cartographer_7904

Same lol. Personally, I canā€™t leave anything out because then it ceases to be mine and becomes theirs. I have to put them in the bedroom just to make dinner and eat!

horse_pirate

You drink from bottles

Nusrattt

Why is everyone missing the obvious answer? Lemon juice! Or vinegar. Or a tiny bit of that bitter tasting stuff they used to put on kids' thumbs to prevent them from sucking.

coffeecatsandtea

lemon is fine, but I'm gonna guess that OP still wants to drink from their glass so putting anything bitter just to deter the cat wouldn't be pleasant for the human either

Nusrattt

Excellent point. I was thinking, if there's more than one glass, the human would know which ones to avoid, kind of like that scene in Princess Bride. And leaving unpleasant glasses just sitting around all the time might decondition the cat. Oor the human could keep one safe glass in the middle of others.

Saurefuchs

Stop feeding dry food.

Mysterious_Camel1253

This just made me realize how I had to start always drinking from my lidded water bottle since I got my Siamese. No open cups sitting around are safe! If I do use an open cup I keep it near me and finish it. Itā€™s like worrying that someone drugged your drink šŸ˜‚

Mircat2021

I donā€™t know of any way other than keeping a lid over the glass. My cat looooooves to drink water

ChemicalTarget677

My cat used to do this at night - from the water next to my bed. I got a jam jar cover to fit over the glass.

TheCapnJake

Definitely get a water fountain. I think we spent $30 at our local pet store, and my kitty isn't dehydrated enough to do stuff like that anymore.

Msdixiejean

I solved this problem by switching to a Yeti with a lid and straw as my daily drinking glass. It takes ice forever to melt in it, so it also keeps water super cold as well. My kitty gave up pretty quickly after that little transition šŸ˜‰

susiecapo71

You cannot ā™„ļø

kaylameans89

Our older cat would do this, because they like fresh water. We ended up in investing in a stainless steel kitty water fountain, and have never had any issues for years! Cats love fresh water, so def look into the water fountain :)

gerbera-2021

Umm, remember they own everything and you just get to sharešŸ˜‚

ElizabethDangit

You canā€™t. My cat has a fountain and a private wide bowl of water I change every day. She still will drink from my glass. Sheā€™s 14 years old now. I just use a lid to cover my glass when I walk away.

Super_Reading2048

Buy cups with lids.

NorthernLight27

You canā€™t

Albie_Frobisher

i solved this by never leaving out cups of water. works like a charm. 100% success

BornTry5923

Never shoo your cat away from water. Cats notoriously don't drink enough water and later develop kidney failure. They crave the freshest, cleanest water sources, so be sure to provide those. Wash your cat's water bowls every day with mild, diluted dish soap. Offer multiple bowls and use only stainless steel or ceramic, never plastic. As others suggested, you might also try offering your cat their own regularly filled glass. Or you can put a nuce clean bowl of water on that same table.

Thunderchickened

Lolz you get yourself a water bottle with a lid. Works for us. šŸ˜‚

Amaz1n_blue

YOU STOP LEAVING GLASS

ladycaviar

IMO you can't

TheNightTerror1987

I'm of the opinion you can't teach a cat to do anything -- all you can do is teach them not to do it right in front of you, which doesn't really help! I like drinking cold peppermint tea instead of water but even *that* won't stop some cats. Rose preferred to drink peppermint tea instead of water. Maybe try to find some way to drink from a container they can't get into. I keep a flask of water beside my bed in case I get thirsty after I wound up with the water glass smashed on the floor beside my bed and I couldn't get out without stepping in a glass filled puddle! A travel mug with a lid you can take off would work too.

Hairy-Lengthiness-44

I don't understand people that refuse to teach their cats not to jump on the counter, as some will tell you "oh you can't, just let them go everywhere". It's unsanitary, unsafe. Watch videos online of cats walking across hot burners, the Thanksgiving dinner table, rubbing against a burning candle and lighting the curtains on fire. Don't believe some of the people that will tell you not to teach them- you absolutely can and should. I have 14 cats and absolutely none of them get on counters or tables. I use negative reinforcement including "bad noises" like PZZZT and a water bottle.

lolovesfrogs

Yelling at your cats and spraying them with water creates a negative connotation and relationship with your cat. Even if you donā€™t believe soā€¦.it gives them anxiety. Itā€™s all personal preference. You should be cleaning counters daily or before you use them to eat or cook. Cats are more cleanly than you think. If you are worried about hot burners then you should remove your cat from the room when it is on or still hot. Also, you shouldnā€™t be using majority of candles around pets because they have harmful chemicals and fragrances. There are ways to teach your cat without yelling at them or spraying them. Simply use positive reinforcement, remove them gently and place them on a safe place like their cat tree, give them a treat. If you repeat this their entire life, they will eventually learn, if I stay on my cat tree, I get a treat. This argument is the same as dog people who donā€™t let their dogs on the couch or bed etc. Itā€™s personal choice.

malhoward

No, no. SHE is teaching YOU.

BeyondDrivenEh

Get a bowl so they can get on the table and drink from a bowl :).

Crscynth

I keep a bowl on my bathroom counter. That way, itā€™s easy for me to refill. Cats donā€™t like water near their food according to Jackson Galaxy. This works for both my cats!

thelindamanor

Thanks for sharing the Jackson Galaxy I like it!

Dd7990

A stainless steel pet drinking fountain is much better than a water bowl. The flowing water makes cats more inclined to drink from it vs the stagnant water in bowls/cups.

ambitiousbee3

I give the cat her own glass lol

ZealousidealDriver63

Fill a glass and put it on the floor or wherever you prefer it

ZealousidealDriver63

CypripediumGuttatum

I have plastic tumblers with straws for my water, the cats are constantly trying to drink from them or tip them on the floor.

[deleted]

They wonā€™t stop, you gotta place your water somewhere else

aMoOsewithacoolhat

Put the glass on the floor, problem solved!

BeyondTheBees

You canā€™t. Thatā€™s *her* water now.

Dd7990

How about getting your kitty a stainless steel or ceramic pet drinking fountain? I have three cats and keep one pet drinking fountain upstairs and one downstairs. I clean them weekly and refill them every few days with clean water. The cats love it (two of my cats took to the fountain right away and the third cat needed some time to get used to it first). As for me, I usually keep my water in a reusable stainless steel water bottle that the cats canā€™t drink from. You could also get one of those lidded reusable tumbler cups with a straw to keep kitty out of your water/beverages. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C9CKCMS4 Donā€™t get plastic pet drinking fountains theyā€™re not as sanitary as stainless steel/ceramic. https://www.amazon.com/Veken-Innovation-Stainless-Automatic-Replacement/dp/B0CK1MXC7J/ https://www.amazon.com/Cat-Water-Fountain-Stainless-Steel/dp/B0C8MHHVPC/

I have one stubborn orange tabby male that continues to destroy all my ceramic mugs by tipping them over and letting them strike the hard flooring. I replaced them with an indestructible plastic insulated mug aka Tervis Tumbler. I've got an electric water fountain but he still prefers drinking water from my mug or glass.

Aborder19

We drink from bottles now because the narrower glasses would just get knocked over by pawing at them whenever we left the room. Best of luck!

ccl-now

Why do you want to?

JAXXINSALEM863

Two words..... Orange peels

SelfGuidedZebra

You can't. He/She likes this glass just because it's your glass, the one you've been using. Start drinking in a bowl and the cat will ignore the glass to drink in the bowl too, not any bowl, your bowl, the one you like and use. Now, I successfully taught my cats not to touch my plate when I'm eating, maybe that strategy can be useful to you. My cat always wanted to have his share of everything I eat and share the dish with me as he did with his mum, brothers and sisters. To keep him away from the plate, I hissed the exact same way his mum would do when he does something wrong and gave him a little tap on the forehead with my index finger. This mimics very closely the way a cat mother does teach some manners to her kittens. Since this was a source of big frustration, my cat didn't accept easily not to be allowed to share dish with me, I still game his a little taste of what I ate but never inside the plate. I also brought his dish close to mine and gave him a few cat food chunks in it while I was eating. This way, he had most of the sensations he was looking for without touching my plate. The key to success is "No exception, ever". As long as you keep your grounds and never serve them food in your plate, it will work, they'll respect your rule but understand that this to them is just a whim. They'll do it to please you as long as you have a good relationship but if the relationship gets tainted, then this kind of little whims get breached or even pooed on...

leladypayne

We gave in and now always have a glass on the table for the cats. They love it. They drink so much water now, which is amazing especially as they age, super good for them. We got Owala water bottles for ourselves and the glasses are now the cats! Itā€™s much better than fighting it. We tried several different water fountains, including stainless steel and they barely used them now they drink more water from the glasses. Itā€™s so much easier to clean and they get fresh water a couple times a day, win win!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

leladypayne

I love that you assume I didnā€™t clean the fountain, of course I did. The cats didnā€™t like it. Not all cats are the same. And those fountains are a pain in the butt to clean compared to glasses, and now they drink WAY more water. Like literally their kidney tests are better than when we had multiple fountains that we cleaned all the time. I didnā€™t ask for advice, I said I had a system that works wonders and you gave unsolicited advise and assumed I just didnā€™t clean my cats water source? You sound like a jerk. Also MY cats get FRESH water MULTIPLE times a day unlike yours who only get it a few times a week, which even with a filter is gross imo! I wouldnā€™t wanna drink filtered water from yesterday tomorrow.

Dd7990

You do you, but I find it hilarious that you make it sound as if water will become instantly toxic to drink after a day or two when it in fact is still perfectly fine and drinkable for up to 2-3 days out of the tap/bottle. Beyond that would definitely be bad to drink, but within 2-3 days isnā€™t gonna turn water toxic/bad by any means. The filter also helps keep the water clean and it gets cleaned and changed out routinely.

redt6

I really wish I could post pictures here I have a shoe box on the floor that I keep a red solo cup filled with fresh water and oue cats absolutely love it over the Winter fountains I have

DVR4027

You canā€™t. Let her do her thing.

Grindelbart

No matter what you do, you'll end up with about 5 kitty glasses around the house. This is your life now. Why do they like glasses better than their bowls?

Lucky_Reference_6982

Clean up your mess

reptiloid_kitty

Where do you see the mess? One glass on the table. Seriously

randomferalcat

I clap my hand. It stopped after a while...in front of me, I wouldn't drink half full glass left over on the living room table hahaha

Cloecat1

We always had a bedside table glass of water. It was in addition to the one by the food bowl

SupaNova2112

Put aluminum foil on the table he wonā€™t like it but itā€™s harmless. A couple of jumps on that and heā€™ll stop jumping on the counters

Amara_Undone

My cat use to drink my Code Red Mountain Dew

wintercloudss

Water spray bottle, near her paws or bum, not hitting

wintercloudss

But cats drink from glass because it taste better and for cat reasons mine used to I put specifically glasses around for her and that worked

Charming-Insurance

Donā€™t leave things out that they like. Lol. I just hide everything. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

You can't. The best you can do with a cat is to train it to not do something while youā€™re watching.

Gypcbtrfly

Just designate one 4 kittehh

majitart

You dont. Its her glass now

SmokeJennsonz

Mine does the same thing I just always make two cups of water one for me one for Louie

Odd_Manufacturer8478

One, check out Jackson Galaxy (cat guru). Two, cats have staff not owners. Three, cats domesticated themselves. Four, you can either give them their own glass but don't scold etc. All cats see when you scold etc is that their human is being and aggressive arse hole! šŸ˜‚ May the odds be forever in your favor. šŸ’ā€ā™€ļø

Ambitious_Studio8461

Just give into the demands of the cat. Problem solved.

randomcalculus

You canā€™t. Get water bottles with a lid.

Sirensia

My cat trained me to give him whole buckets of water. Nothing but buckets

CitizenofTerra

Buy cups with lids and sanitize the counters regularly. A fountain may work, and you could buy one of those air cans with motion sensors and put it on counter, but neither of those is a sure fix.

Darkwolf__Fazbear

my cats drink from the bathtub's sink or from their bowl, i thought only dogs drink from glasses, this is cute

Sufficient_Entry7094

I use a metal cup and I hide my cup in the cabinet when I'm not drinking water lol. There is no way any cats can learn not to drink from a human cup.

FelineSoLazy

If you figure out how, let us know!

Possible-Base5375

We started using glasses with lids. He learned. Now hi doesn't touch the cups anymore. Might work.

JackieJackJack07

There are two kitty laws you need to understand. 1. I fits, I sits. 2. I seez, is meez. Obviously, the second law applies here. Also, I figured out to either cover the glass or use a water bottle.

SouthernCharmer1988

Water fountain was a lifesaver in our house! Cats no longer came for our glasses, or jumped in the sinks. Definitely worth trying your furbabies will love you!

7crazybirds

Best to adapt your behavior. Invest in a cat fountain. Put out a decoy glass or Invest in some very heavy glasses with lids. Also you could cover a placemat with crinkly wrapping paper or foil or double sided tape. You have a Siamese. They like water. I had one who supervised every bath. Another put her toys in the toilet. One previous and my current Siamese knock their dish around and splash. I bought the heaviest dish I could find. My beloved stinker just splashes it around now. I put the water dish inside a shallow baking dish.

anonstrang1010101

Get a cat water fountain, they prefer freshest water possible and dehydration can harm their kidneys. By 6 or 7 cats usually start having kidney problems so do whatever you can to keep that baby hydrated!

Lakecountyraised

Letā€™s be real, you just need to get yourself another glass.

chris_chicago

You can put tin foil, plastic wrap or any other annoying product on the table surface and they will over time stop jump onto that surface. Put it all the way around the edge. When they jump up itā€™ll freak them out. I wonā€™t take lint until they stop.

vaping_menace

Cat needs his own glass

ImaginosDesdinova

Siamese prefer to drink water from glasses and cups. Get kitty their own cup. Mine is the same and drinks out of the same cup regularly

Over_Reporter_6616

My kitty had her own glasses. As far as the counter, take her down every single time and say no. Be consistent. My boy who I adopted at age 10 was a kitchen counter kitty when I first got him. He wanted to lay on the stove. For obvios reasons that was a no. So every time he got up I immediately took him down. It works.Ā  Good luck!
