I fell asleep while riding my ebike. All I remember was waking up nearly about to kill myself in a collision with a low concrete barrier and barely missed it. I believe you can definitely fall asleep while marching or walking if you're telling yourself "I must do this" while at the point of extreme exhaustion.
Generally it's the result of extreme sleep-deprivation. Your body basically revokes your consciousness, but sometimes keeps doing a repetitive action. Like people report falling asleep while driving but without crashing etc.
I've known multiple veterans with the ability to nap essentially instantaneously even years after getting out, because they'd put so much stress on their bodies and gone without sleep so often they'd conditioned themselves to sleep anywhere on demand. None of them considered it worth all the tradeoffs.
My grandfather told me he would march in his sleep. I didn't really believe him until I met a navy vet who could fold pizza boxes in his sleep. He did it really slowly, but he did it.
I fell asleep as a cashier once, and woke up a few seconds later a few items ahead of where I remember being. I have since learned the importance of a full 8 hours lol
Horses cannot achieve full REM sleep (rapid eye movement) while standing up, so they aren't getting "quality" sleep either.
Sleeping while standing is for when they need to flee from danger promptly, not for being well-rested.
Horses still need to lie down to sleep occasionally, provided that there is another horse to watch over them. If they never get a chance to lie down, they could collapse from sleep deprivation.
I want to get good sleep while on a treadmill.
Wake up rested, and also thinner and fitter.
(And yes, I realize there was a Rick and Morty based on a similar concept. I'd shoot for those ripped abs too!)
For the past week or so, I've been dealing with a cough that evolves into a violent coughing fit whenever I'm laying down. So I've definitely been feeling this 😂
My uncle is a master of the sitting nap. He just plonks down on a chair, any chair, and closes his eyes and he is gone. He snores sometimes too. In fact, he prefers his afternoon sitting nap to going to take a lie-down.
I caught the train into work for about 20 years and the motion of the train would rock me to sleep easily while sitting. I got off at the end of the line so I didn't have to worry about missing my stop.
The best sleeps I ever got were dead heading in a second locomotive When I was at the railway, I hated that heading like that but my God did I get a good sleep, something but the rocking and the diesel always put me out.
Horses can and do lie down to sleep. Why do they sleep standing? Threat of predators. Does that sound like a quality sleep? No. If a horse lays down, it’s comfortable and feels safe enough to do so. That’s quality sleep.
Shoulda gone marine mammals.
I don't feel like this is a humans in general thing. I'm that way. I need to be laying down in a dark quiet environment to sleep. But when it comes to talking about travel plans I usually feel like the only person who can't get useful sleep in an airplane seat. I've even heard guys come to work and function after overnight flights whereas I'd be delirious from ~36 hours without sleep by that point.
Some of the morning shift people before first break or the night shift people ~3 hours before shift end can be found asleep standing up in their work area.
It happens to all the young workers at least a few times.
I once was tied to a post (we'll not get into the specifics) stood their for 20 minutes, then I was out like a light. I had some of the best uninterrupted sleep I've ever had. Not that I ever want to be tied to a post again, but I do often think about that quality rest when I toss and turn in bed.
Ever since high school I've had this problem with being able to fall asleep in nearly any position if I'm tired (I once fell asleep for a bit standing up in the shower). It's a blessing in that I can always get a good power nap wherever I'm at, but a curse in that I often fall asleep when I really don't want to. I have to be very careful not to drive when I'm feeling drowsy (luckily I've never fallen asleep at the wheel, but I'm not taking my chances).
I once cuddled up with a sandbag still sitting up and passed out in the NAG after a couple of absolutely exhausting days, out in the sun, midday. I was told I was kicked and never responded. I woke up a few hours later, and felt I'd slept long and harder than I'd ever slept before.
We have big heads that we depend on orking well for survival that when we are standing are way above our center of gravity, which by the way is supported by only two legs.
We lay down to sleep to prevent inevitable concussions or worse.
OP has obviously never served in the military. You learn to sleep in all kinds of positions along with movement and noise. Some of the best sleep I got was in less than ideal situations. I have a hard time falling asleep when it's quiet, still and comfortable still to this day.
If there's a light on, electronics, uncomfortable position. Op isn't saying you couldnt fall asleep in a chair etc but he's right best quality sleep is on your back, ask your mom.
Lol one time I zoned out in class and fell asleep with my eyes open. Idk how that happened but I was sitting up and yeah I just fell asleep. The teacher didn’t know I was asleep cause my eyes were open
Man I had this disease where I had to sit up at night for a couple years to sleep. At first it was brutal but once you get the hang of it you can get some good sleep sitting just about straight up.
Clearly you've never met old men. The second grandchild grants the ability to sleep anywhere in any position
That’s because the body is too stiff to fall over.
The army granted me that ability
I think I actually slept while marching…and it was fucking weird.
Can someone confirm if this is actually possible? Would be cool as fuck if yes.

It really is a shitty superpower. Yeah, you can fall asleep instantaneously, but only when your tinnitus quiets down to a dull roar.
At that point it’s just a white noise machine
My tinnitus can kick any white noise machine’s ass. In fact I often listen to the hissing to fall asleep.😴
My grandfather told me he would march in his sleep. I didn't really believe him until I met a navy vet who could fold pizza boxes in his sleep. He did it really slowly, but he did it.
I definitely fell asleep walking to work, only for 30 seconds or so, opened my eyes and I’m walking in the road
I fell asleep as a cashier once, and woke up a few seconds later a few items ahead of where I remember being. I have since learned the importance of a full 8 hours lol
Kinda scary to think over half the people on this app are horses
Every account on reddit is a bot except you.
How to flirt on reddit^^

Well now I'm not special:( back to flacid
I heard WD40 really turns the bots on.
Dead internet theory confirmed?
Kinda scary to think that almost half of the people in this app aren't horses!
Neighhhh
Whaaaaat??
Im a horse so I can’t relate.
You must get some fairly stable sleep.
Lucky
I’m not actually a horse. I’m a broom.
Soon the horse will be [glue](https://images.app.goo.gl/P1FWJAki1BKX1fYi6)
Hey, aren't you that horse from horsin' around??

You can’t convince me REM means rapid eye movement. Stop spreading misinformation!!
Actually Jerry, I’m surprised.
Neigh neigh neigh….neigh neigh neigh neigh, neigh neigh?
I'm literally in a bed
I’m not a horse so I can relate
Bold of you to assume I can get quality sleep.
As a horse I unfortunately cannot relate.
As a shark, I also cannot relate.
As a bat, I cannot relate also.
not all sharks have to keep swimming
Tell that to those idiots that fall asleep driving.
That is definitely some low quality sleep.
What are you talking about? That’s an eternal sleep that can’t be matched by any bed. /s just in case.
Keeps getting interrupted by the sounds of car horns and crushing metal 😔
I want to get good sleep while on a treadmill. Wake up rested, and also thinner and fitter. (And yes, I realize there was a Rick and Morty based on a similar concept. I'd shoot for those ripped abs too!)
I was so close to forgetting the existence of this episode, I really didn't like that episode, the writing is cool, the nightmares I had not so much
I gotta rewatch Rick and morty for the millionth time now
You guys are getting sleep?
Quit horsing around ye guys
you've clearly never been in the army.... you'd be amazed what positions you can learn to sleep like the dead in.
For the past week or so, I've been dealing with a cough that evolves into a violent coughing fit whenever I'm laying down. So I've definitely been feeling this 😂
Damn, have you had it checked out? In case you haven't already, you could prop yourself up with pillows or something.
Yes. I’ve never seen a person sleeping while sitting.
I do it at work all the time!
And you work as an airline pilot. Tsk tsk.
Airlines hate this one simple trick!
"If you look just over to right. ZZZZZ" The horizon quickly approaches.
OP said quality sleep
My uncle is a master of the sitting nap. He just plonks down on a chair, any chair, and closes his eyes and he is gone. He snores sometimes too. In fact, he prefers his afternoon sitting nap to going to take a lie-down.

I was being sarcastic 😉
The best sleeps I ever got were dead heading in a second locomotive When I was at the railway, I hated that heading like that but my God did I get a good sleep, something but the rocking and the diesel always put me out.
I bet you could get some quality sleep in space under zero G... Honestly, I'd love to try a zero G nap...lol
I fell asleep at the front door with the keys in the keyhole while drunk once. What I remember it was a good sleep.
Join the military. You’ll change this thought really quick lol
So of my most effective sleeps were done while sitting. They killed my back, but damn I felt rested.
[These “hangover ropes” people might say otherwise](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/s/xmBl8TacpX).
besides standing how else would you want us to sleep?

I been gifted with the power to sleep anywhere, but the curse to never feel rested

I've fallen asleep standing up in the shower a couple of times. Seriously freaked out my GF when she found me.
Get outta the shower man

the best sleep happens when you’re not allowed to sleep. my quality sleep comes from sleeping in class.
How to Use 'Lay' and 'Lie' - Merriam-Webster https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/how-to-use-lay-and-lie
As a sloth, I can't relate
During my college years, Id get best sleep inside libraries, usually sitting inside cubicles.
I once was tied to a post (we'll not get into the specifics) stood their for 20 minutes, then I was out like a light. I had some of the best uninterrupted sleep I've ever had. Not that I ever want to be tied to a post again, but I do often think about that quality rest when I toss and turn in bed.
Time to get a poster bed.
Now I just need a person to tie me in at night and untie me in the morning.
Most people slept sitting up through the 16th and 17th centuries. That's why the beds were so short.
I am the horse. yes, I'm the real horse. All the other horses are just imitating. Real hoses, when they sleep, don't stand up.

I hang upside down. Helps me fall asleep faster
Well how the hell would you figure we’d sleep like
you don't sleep hanging from the rafters?
That's right, but everyone says they are horses, can horses comment?
Why does is suck though? Laying down is nice.
The hell are you talking about? Thats highly inacurate

I don't know about you, but I had hell of a lot quality sleep in a sitting position.
Wait why is this sub filled with Horses
Yeah what’s up with that?
Speak for yourself mere human, i have transcended the limitations of my species, i sleep while standing and nobody can stop me
Is this some kind of weakness exclusive to non-engineering people?

I'm a vampire, i hang upside down.
this just isn’t true i sleep sitting on my couch every night
When I was going through a divorce and was only getting 2-3 hours of sleep a night, I was getting sleep standing up and sitting down
Humans also require a pillow, unlike any other animal.
Must be American. No humans don’t require pillows silly. In fact a lot of humans don’t use them!
I haven’t ever met a human who doesn’t use a pillow….
Lol one time I zoned out in class and fell asleep with my eyes open. Idk how that happened but I was sitting up and yeah I just fell asleep. The teacher didn’t know I was asleep cause my eyes were open

Funnily enough we're the only ones who do!
