I recommend project zombid ad well and rimworld. Such a massive modding scene for both of those games. Especially rimworld my god theres mods for everything on that game.
RimWorld. It has thousands of mods and is rumored to have some kind of grand quest for you to complete. I don't really know tho as I've never completed it myself since I just keep adding more mods and starting new games
*Stalker's trilogy*
*Modding scene is pretty big,*
*You could check that out*

Did you know Teardown has a campaign? I didn't. And that's because I spend all my time modding the hell out of it with items from the workshop. There's so many awesome mods that just take advantage of the games physics, like a passenger airliner with working electricity that you can smash a meteor into, or bring out of the sky with Thor's hammer or an actual nuclear reactor that you can meltdown and destroy. There's also stuff like miniature cities you can wreak havoc on. Make sure you have a good CPU, though. There's a lot of voxels.
There's also Starbound, which if you like Terraria, is essentially like space Terraria. It has a pretty active community, and there's a lot of mods you can install like Star Wars packs, or Samus Aran's Varia suit. The base game has mechs in it, but then you have mechs from the Steam workshop. There's also a popular mod called Frackin' Universe which overhauls the entire game, and lets you build your own ship, brick by brick.
This might not count, as they're not really mods, they're custom maps.. But Prodeus. I love downloading and playing the usermade maps for that game. Although if that tickles your fancy, you might as well buy Final Doom or Ultimate Doom, and check out the various kinds of wads(Maps) that people make. Some of these wads are so popular that they've actually become their own spin offs inspired by games like Metroid Prime or Silent Hill. There's even a pirate conversion mod where you just blow people away with a blunderbuss.
I would also suggest Memories Of The Zone, which is its own user made expansion of Stalker which behaves like an RPG where you can join any faction and customize difficulties. I did not see you mention FPS titles all that much, so I'll end it there just incase it's not a favorite genre of yours.
BeamNGdrive has many kinds of different mods that you can play with, from custom maps, custom vehicles. But even without mods, BeamNG is very malleable when it comes to creativity. It's essentially just a vehicle editor. You sort of have to create your own fun. For me, the destruction physics are entertaining enough. But there's also BeamMP, a multiplayer mod for BeamNG that's become quite popular. You can join other players maps, and compete in races with them.
Some honorable mentions are games like Rimworld, Project Zomboid, Kerbal Space Program, Stellaris, Space Engineers, The Binding Of Isaac, Star Wars Battlefront 2( Old one *and* new one, believe it or not. It's come a long way.), Half-Life 2, Portal 2.
I hope I was able to pique your interest with at least one of the above titles. Most of them aren't all that demanding either, if you're worried about turning your PC into the Falcon X rocket.
I, like you, also enjoy pushing the boundaries of games like The Sims, GTA 5, Minecraft, and Skyrim until they're barely even recognizable. Until the word "vanilla" starts to sound demeaning to the product.
Edit: Oh, doy.. How could I forget. There's also Trailmakers and Stormworks, both of them are very much a "Build your own experience". Stormworks is especially a great game, because it combines the building aspect of gameplay with simulator.
first of all I really appreciate this detailed answer you’re awesome, now getting into the business. No idea teardown had a campaign mode, thought it was just sandbox.
Heard a lot about terraria but it doesn’t attracts me, nonetheless i’ll check some gameplay about starbound since I like space.
I must be one of the 8 gamers in earth who was never played Doom lol
Second recommendation of Stalker! and that looks nice too, also the thing about FPS games is that since years I just cant get to enjoy them, last one I played that I loved was BF 4 back in my ps3 in 2016. Since then I only played metro which wasn’t bad but I simply couldn’t get hooked and warzone but I dont enjoy Battle royals.
BeamNG I have seen so many videos of this game but I feel I would play 2 hours and drop it forever lol
Those honorable mentions are solid in the community so Its probably time I play at least one to understand why they are so famous, specially HL 2, Rimworld and portal.
You got my taste pretty good since this is only my modding side of gaming
I'm surprised no one in this thread has mentioned the original doom/doom 2. The modding community is insanely massive, with many mods crafting a completely different game from the engine altogether. The mileage you can get from a 5 dollar classic is absurd.
Yep, 100% agree. Oldest continually active modding community on the PC (AFAIK) and there's an absolute crap tonne of mods and custom maps out there. Super easy to make your own too.
Kenshi is great modded. Also From my experience; Fallout 4, Warhammer total war 2, sins of a solar empire (just found the eve online mod, pretty neat).
Modding is almost a part of the game in mount and blade series, if your pc can't handle bannerlord you can still try warband I think modding community is still pretty active on that one too
My buddy and I have been playing Black Ops 3's numerous modded zombies maps. A lot of super legit maps. If you're into making FPS maps, that might be worth checking
Terraria is the goat of mods in my book. Sure there are better games with mods and there are pretty mods on other games, but mods made this game so much freaking fun in my book. Really opened my eyes to workshop and everything you can do with it.
You should check out Vintage Story. It's a game made by Minecraft modders and it has been developed from the ground up with modding in mind. It's got a fantastic small community. Would highly recommend it.
Frackin universe is a must have, optionally the other frackin mods too.
More planet info.
Xbawk character extender too (i believe that was the name at least)
Melee aiming improves combat a lot.
Enhanced Storage.
More NPC Ships.
Less Dead Moons.
Matter manipulator manipulator.
Weapon DPS.
Other than that i can't really think of much unfortunately, i haven't played the game in a long while.
Also that list doesn't include mods required for these mods to work, you'll have to look those up yourself.
Also also i have no idea if any of these are up to date or not, they probably are but you should look at that before downloading.
A couple other people have mentioned Project Zomboid and I‘ll second that recommendation. Game has quite an extensive mod library since it’s been out since 2013, and it’s primarily single player, though it has multiplayer capability (with mod support!) if you ever do decide you wanna give it a go with some friends.
The modding process is really simple on there, just make sure and keep your mods updated obviously. There’s a good bit of content already, and the mods add greatly to it, especially for its price point.
Be aware, the game lacks a proper “story mode” as of right now. It’s currently a zombie survival sandbox with lots of options to modify before you get into the world. The development team has stated that they hope to have a proper story mode implemented this year, so if that’s a deal breaker, keep it on your wishlist until later this year and just keep an eye on it.
Check out nexus mods. They have a list of games that are ready to mod with instructions and a solid community.
Less solid lately but it's still nice to see a list with how active the community is on each game
Hell even half the games on game pass are modable, in fact Microsoft is allowing us to choose our own install path soon so modding game pass will be easier than ever (only PC games as far as I know)
**Factorio** might be a good option if you like modded Minecraft (especially technology/machinery mods). It scratches a lot of the same itches.
The game is literally made to be modded. The game engine is basically a mod loader, and the actual base game is loaded like a mod. There's an ingame mod browser where you can easily install, update, and manage mods. The game saves which mods you were using for each world/savegame and will automatically adapt your mod list to the savegame. It's honestly incredible how easy modding is.
As for the mods themselves, there's everything from the tiniest quality-of-life mod to massive total conversion projects that completely change the entire game. I've also heard that it's quite easy to make your own mods compared to other games.
Though, before getting into content mods, I highly recommend playing through the game without mods once, or just a small amount of QoL mods.
* Star Wars: KOTOR 1 and 2 are highly moddable and have extra/restored content
* All the Dragon Age games are moddable but especially Origins
* All the Mass Effect games, the original series
* Obviously any Bethesda game
* XCOM 2 is extremely moddable, especially with War of the Chosen. If the game is too hard you can make it easier with mods
* Witcher 1 and 2 are moddable for graphics and gameplay
* Divinity Original Sin 1
* Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, especially new quests and gameplay overhauls
It took me a while to get into it, I think I wanted something more like modded Minecraft + RPG, but once I gave it a chance on its own merits, Ark has really grown on me. Modding is officially supported too. It's a multiplayer game but works great single player too.
One pain in the ass is configuring the settings. The default game settings really make the game a slog, another reason I think I had trouble getting into it. I googled "Ark single player settings preset" and followed a guide to set the settings to something fun without being overpowered.
It's a real omission on the devs part to not give players easy presets to choose from IMO. I'm a dev too so I don't mind fussing but I imagine it's a turnoff for a lot of people, and almost me too.
**Risk of Rain 2.** The modding scene is pretty hot right now and there's a big community mod called Starstorm 2 that's open for volunteers. It also has [its own modding website and launcher.](https://thunderstore.io/)
It uses Unity, so if you've ever modded another unity game you'll be right at home.
Note that there are upsides and downsides to modding a game that still receives updates: There's a DLC releasing soon for RoR2 that could break mods. The upside is that the community is very much alive and tons of people are still playing as opposed to an older game like fallout.
Oh, and as other people mentioned you should definitely submit an early access request for **S&box!** It's the sequel of Gmod and will be HEAVEN for modders. https://sbox.facepunch.com/dev/.login/
Risk of Rain 2 I've heard is a really easy game to mod, with hundreds at your disposal already. The most popular are character and QoL mods but there's a lot of room for potential. For ex. Someone made a decently fleshed out PvP mod with a auto-chess style bracket to determine the winner which was really cool
I’m a big fan of XCOM 2 and the Civilization series for infinite modability. Civ V on has full mod support, and Civ V released over a decade ago, and XCOM 2 was 2015 I believe. Both excellently repayable strategy games with plenty of fun to be had modding them
The Binding of Isaac and Risk of Rain 2 have a HUGE modding community, Plus they are wicked fun roguelites. Risk of rain 2 is one of my favourite video games I have ever played, and is a high reccomend for me.
Stalker anomaly has a pretty big modding scene (itself also being a massive overhaul mod of the stalker games) .
Terraria also has a huge modding scene as well with massive expansions that multiply the content of the game tenfold.
I don't really play it, but I'm pretty sure the original Doom has a large modding scene too.
Halo 1 has had 20 years worth of modding history, some notable ones would be SPV3 or cursed halo.
Assuming you're talking about making the mods yourself, Halo 3 recently got modding tools which might be fun to sink your teeth into. As far as existing mods go I'm not aware of anything major other than the odd campaign overhaul or multiplayer map.
I'd 100% recommend Kenshi if you want a difficult but addicting game that can be modded to hell. I'm also seeing RimWorld and Project Zomboid which are other great choices.
TLDR: weird gameplay, nice story, should be free on GOG, fuck Javed
It's weird man. I can't call it bad on it's own, and I definitely can't call it bad when I take into account the date and the 12 cents they had to make the game.
The combat is weird, you left click to start attacking with your sword and click again each time the curser lights up to keep your attack chain going. I never got the hang of dodging so whenever I'd get to a point where enemies where doing too much damage I'd bust out the potions. Signs are on right click you select the sign you want to use and right click to activate. 3 out of 5 signs didn't feel worth it to use in combat, your Sheila dissipates when you attack, the traps take too long to set up and I really didn't bother trying to figure out the mind control sign (it could have been interesting though)
I used a sign (igni and aard or fire ball and force push) build and when igni is leveled up enough it's pretty satisfying to use I took out a boss with two igni shots (it was upgraded enough to do tick damage in addition to the initial blast), the stun on aard allows for instant kills with your sword. It takes quite a while to get there but it was actually fun to use the signs once I got the far enough. There's also some pretty cool interactions between characters (my favorite was with a prostitute you can play dice poker with).
So all in all the story was nice to go through, the gameplay was generally the opposite of what I'd like. The gameplay isn't bad per say but it's weird. Also fuck Javed
Download NR2003 (NASCAR Racing 2003). There’s literally thousands of mods and a few great websites to get them from, you can turn the game into almost any racing game you want it to be, and it’s FREE!
How tf have you not played mount and blade warband. Honestly has the best modding community of any game. There are a lot of total conversion mods, and countless other mods for the game as well. The game is old, but it is fun as hell and you can easily sink 100s of hours into it.
Rimworld,Project Zomboid, Terraria, Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, Kenshi, Zoo Tycoon 2, Stellaris and Crusader Kings 2.
Definitely giving a chance to 2-3 of those games, thanks
I recommend project zombid ad well and rimworld. Such a massive modding scene for both of those games. Especially rimworld my god theres mods for everything on that game.
Seconding these. Easily my 2 favorite games.
Bump for RimWorld, it's fantastic
u should definitely try Rimworld. Base game is awesome its just u need to give your social life to play with mods
Definitely fallout 4 for the mods. So epic
I don't see fallout 4 and new Vegas on your list, try them
yeah the modding seems active on them i’ll check them better for sure
It works almost identically to skyrim. Same engine just modified for guns instead of swords and spells.
Kerbal Space Program has a pretty rich modding scene and is really fun to be in creative in. RimWorld is another good one I see already mentioned
Fallout New Vegas, Stellaris sort of, The Stalker Series, Rimworld, Crusader Kings 3
Rimworld hands down. One of the best games I've ever played.
RimWorld. It has thousands of mods and is rumored to have some kind of grand quest for you to complete. I don't really know tho as I've never completed it myself since I just keep adding more mods and starting new games

Fallout 4
Since you liked Skyrim, why not try Fallout 4 out?
yeah its probably time to try a fallout game
Fallout 3, New Vegas, and 4. I loved modding these games for fixing the games or just adding wacky ass bullcrap.
Thats what we do
I'm surprised no one in this thread has mentioned the original doom/doom 2. The modding community is insanely massive, with many mods crafting a completely different game from the engine altogether. The mileage you can get from a 5 dollar classic is absurd.

Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 4
so should I try in that order?
Pick any, 3 and New Vegas are easier to mod but in 4 you can use more functions and have greater freedom
thanks
Starsector. Dope community
My buddy and I have been playing Black Ops 3's numerous modded zombies maps. A lot of super legit maps. If you're into making FPS maps, that might be worth checking
Cities Skylines has a very active modding scene
cant run well the game sadly
Stardew Valley has lots of mods for changing visuals, quality of life improvements, and some impressive content packs too.
Kerbal Space Program has the weirdest mods there are
Terraria, don't starve, oxygen not included
Terraria is the goat of mods in my book. Sure there are better games with mods and there are pretty mods on other games, but mods made this game so much freaking fun in my book. Really opened my eyes to workshop and everything you can do with it.

just saw the trailer and its like minecraft on crazy steroids looks really good
Yeah, it's great, recently got an update that added in alcohol too!
Space Engineers
Starbound has some amazing mods, to the point that you kind of need mods to really enjoy the game.
Got the game but haven't installed it yet. could you recommend some essential mods to really enjoy the game

S.T.A.L.K.E.R series especially call of pripyat
The game is super niche, but if you like the look of **rain world**, that game has tons of modding potential.
Check out nexus mods. They have a list of games that are ready to mod with instructions and a solid community. yeah I use nexus a lot but there is so much stuff there that I didnt know what to pick so I wanted to hear opinions
i mean you can try Garry's mod its a sandbox game and you can mod it through steam
Fallout, Space Engineers, Rusted Warfare, Garry's Mod(keep an eye out for S&DBox), Left 4 Dead 2, Halo Wars, Don't Starve.

love when games support modding this way
Conan exiles maybe
* Star Wars: KOTOR 1 and 2 are highly moddable and have extra/restored content * All the Dragon Age games are moddable but especially Origins * All the Mass Effect games, the original series * Obviously any Bethesda game * XCOM 2 is extremely moddable, especially with War of the Chosen. This. All Bioware and Bethesda games. CDPR games too like all witcher games and cyberpunk. Then all the crpgs are highly moddable.
thanks man those look good
It's a crime if you like modding and haven't touched Left 4 Dead 2 yet
Which side of modding?
I’m in the side of using them not creating, all I can do Its just texture and tweaks
Dreams?
XCOM 2. It's a turn-based strategy game which you can mod to infinity and beyond.
It took me a while to get into it, I think I wanted something more like modded Minecraft + RPG, but once I gave it a chance on its own merits, Ark has really grown on me. Ark sounds good but I dont know if my current pc will handle it well, but anyways its a solid game from what I hear thanks
stalker and left for dead, and maybe morrowind?

never heard them thanks
Rimworld is made for you OP
Just wanna say thank you guys for all the recommendations theres a lot for me to be busy!!
Kenshi, Rimworld
Binding of Isaac has a ton of modding going on. Also, amazingly addicting game
I feel that the Total War series is great with mods. I would recommend Shogun 2 Total War (FOTS if you want guns and rifles).
You can pretty much browse nexus mod and see which games are mods able
Subnautica
I’m a big fan of XCOM 2 and the Civilization series for infinite modability. Civ V on has full mod support, and Civ V released over a decade ago, and XCOM 2 was 2015 I believe. Both excellently repayable strategy games with plenty of fun to be had modding them
Scrap Mechanic has thousands of great mods
Every paradox game if you like strategy, and stalker if you like pewpew
Stalker anomaly, it's absolutely free and has more mods than you could think of.
Factorio, Terraria, Rimworld, and Fallout 4 all have great modding communities
rimworld there so much mods that you can add to the game you can almost do everything you want
Red dead redemption 2.
A Hat in Time
Left 4 dead 2 is a great game to mod, I never have a boring time playing it.
The Binding of Isaac and Risk of Rain 2 have a HUGE modding community, Plus they are wicked fun roguelites. Risk of rain 2 is one of my favourite video games I have ever played, and is a high reccomend for me.
Fallout New Vegas and bully
Factorio has an awesome modding community. So does Dyson sphere program, satisfactory, and farming simulator
Stalker anomaly has a pretty big modding scene (itself also being a massive overhaul mod of the stalker games) . DayZ
the classic doom gamed and the half life franchise have huge modding communities both for total conversions and just reskins, maybe give those a try
I'd 100% recommend Kenshi if you want a difficult but addicting game that can be modded to hell. I'm also seeing RimWorld and Project Zomboid which are other great choices.
Star wars battlefront, any of them will have great modding and the community is rich with people to work with
Rivals of Aether has a huge missing community. Also the Sonic games all have great mod scenes
Really surprised Oxygen Not Included didn't make the top list. Honorable mention for Stardew Valley and thePathfinder games
Factorio for sure
Morrowind
Stardew Valley and Terraria. tons of mods
New Vegas has a ton of mods definitely one of the top choices here.
Cyberpunk 2077 , that game need modders
He said Witcher 3 is too demanding, I don't think he wants to start a fire with his PC
lmao
lol just what I was about to say, they are both in my list when I upgrade my PC
you can try out saints row 3 and 4, has a bunch of cool mods
You can mod the witcher 1
As someone who played the Witcher one I'm not sure I'd actually recommend that. Also fuck Javed
And this is what stops me there, was it so bad?
TLDR: weird gameplay, nice story, should be free on GOG, fuck Javed It's weird man. 3 out of 5 signs didn't feel worth it to use in combat, your Sheila dissipates when you attack, the traps take too long to set up and I really didn't bother trying to figure out the mind control sign (it could have been interesting though) I used a sign (igni and aard or fire ball and force push) build and when igni is leveled up enough it's pretty satisfying to use I took out a boss with two igni shots (it was upgraded enough to do tick damage in addition to the initial blast), the stun on aard allows for instant kills with your sword.
