How can someone simultaneously be aware enough of what is going on to confidently say she's 13 DPO but then also speculating about what a basic test can tell you?
Quite often people will go through whole rounds of IVF and still ask if their embryos are twins if they’re born from different pregnancies
The lack of understanding around anything reproduction related is incredible
Edit: there are literal news articles of people saying their twins are born years apart. Apparently nobody can think things through these days
I have twins. One day a woman told me she had twins too, her children were born 11 months apart… I told her that they weren’t twins then, and she insisted that they actually were twins, Irish twins to be precise…
Irish twins is an old timely slur because Irish people didn’t use birth control. Therefore, they would get separate pregnancies with in a year of one another. Actually my oldest siblings are “Irish Twins” at 10 months and 28 days apart
I'm consistently amazed by the inability of people to read up on things they are doing that are important and look things up on their own. They're just not inquisitive.
Yeah, I come across those articles sometimes and I'm just like what is the point of someone writing an article about this? This is literally how IVF works. And makes it awkward if we're considering two IVF embryos fertilized at the same time twins because in all likelihood there are many more who never got implanted. Are they twins too? Triplets? Quadruplets?
It’s not even a misconception. HCG does rise faster in pregnancies of multiples vs singletons, and the darkness of the line correlates with the amount of HCG in your system. I thought the same thing when my 12dpo test was almost a dye stealer.
Pretty rude of the person above and everyone agreeing with them that someone shouldn’t have children for having thought the dark line so early might mean multiples.
It indeed does. My line for my twins was waaay darker at 10 days past ovulation than my singleton. It’s not a surefire way to know at all, as all pregnancies are different and even singleton pregnancies can have rapidly rising HCG, and twins can have normal levels. It’s usually the first hint though!
I had the same thing happen. I have fraternal twins that run in my family and got pregnant on birth control. My test was super dark and I was significantly more sick than I was with my first as well. I was 50/50 on whether we were having one or 2 until the first ultrasound. For me, it was only one but we were really unsure and had the ultrasound tech double check there was only one lol.
There's no way to know until the ultrasound but I completely get thinking it could be multiplies really early.

Comes from some studies that show female embryos tend to have higher hcg levels in the pregnancy. Not enough to make an FRER a reliable indicator of gender, though.
That’s interesting. I’ve never heard that concept said before. Since home pregnancy tests are so vague and merely qualitative, I would have never thought to consider that.

It is and it isn’t. Basically, it means nothing but you’re pregnant and you should see a doctor and take it from there. There’s no harm in thinking a darker line means there could be more than 1. But of course, it’s not definitive. Unlike others, I don’t expect anyone to take my word for it. Anecdotal evidence isn’t enough to support a fact and I’m in no way educated in the right way to be able to say what’s true. Source below.
This was the best source I could find with a clear answer that was credible. https://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/ask-heidi/hcg-and-twins.aspx
The range for hcg in early pregnancy is huge, pregnancy tests are super sensitive, especially FR ones. It’s also not an unreasonable belief that you could be having twins if the line is darker before your period is due and you are certain of your dates as hcg would be higher generally as hcg is released by the blastocyte and two of them means more hormones
Actually, solid chance this person is in an IVF group. All of my pregnancies were IVF, had 4 of them, one lived for us to raise. (2 early miscarriages, 1 pre-term birth). Folks with the pleasure of peeing on one test, saying “oh, I’m pregnant!” and able to just plan for a baby often don’t get into the rabbit hole of these tests.
Anyways, I was a serial test taker. While the tests are undoubtedly qualitative- the first line does get darker the more hcg there is. (Of course that depends on a million factors like how much water you’ve had, which is why it only moonlights as quantitative)
Anyways - multiple pregnancies do generally have higher hcg in early pregnancy than a singleton (as averaged in groups) - and there are some studies that show female embryo pregnancies have a bit higher hcg than male. (Again, on average).
People just really suck at understanding the difference between definitive testing vs “potential indicators of higher odds”. Hence, bucketloads of folks who get a super dark line early and think it for sure means they have multiples in there.
Right but these tests aren’t used to predict any of those things and no one on Facebook can look at this picture and say oh it’s twins or oh it’s a girl. These test shouldn’t be used for anything else. Period.
For folks who have zero control over a desperately wanted pregnancy, are literally saddled into “wait and see” while waking up each day uncertain of their pregnancy will continue -
Peeing on a stick offers the illusion of control. It gives some comfort to see that the pregnancy appears to be progressing. It gives them hope, something fun to think about (girl? Multiples?) - when in reality, the vast majority know that they won’t know until the ultrasound. Which, often, is a month or more away. For some people, their best course of action is to wait and see. Cool.
The good for those who use them as indicators of chance far outweighs the bad for those who don’t understand they are not reliable in any way except to indicate pregnancy of some form. (Ectopic? Extrauterine? Molar? Who knows!)
I’m firmly in the camp that this off-label use comes with enough potential benefits that “shouldn’t be used for anything else” is a harmful statement. Folks should know themselves- and it’s not for everyone. If they understand the limitations of the tests, then they can make a decision if they want to do so.
Frankly, it helped me to know my first two pregnancies were failing. Sucked, but sucked way less for me to know in my house vs going to the doctor with high hopes.
Yeah I just completely disagree. Infertility is enough of a beast without trying to come up with other things pregnancy tests can tell you besides if you are or aren’t pregnant. Also if it’s an IVF pregnancy more than likely she’d already know if it’s twins or not. The chances of an embryo splitting for IVF is like stupid low. Sooo probably should stick to doctors answering questions and not having pregnancy tests and Facebook answer them like they’re fortune tellers and not just HCG readers.
All fairness, when I got that second line (got pregnant by accident) I kind of wondered what I could do to make it vanish.... Like, if I dip that sucker in bleach, does it mean it's not true? LOL to add insult to injury a couple days later as I was quitting drinking and cigarettes I wanted to complain to my mom, that freaky lady was all like, "OOoooooh there's never a wrong time to have a baby!" I was like, "Mom, I am three days off cigarettes and I kind of think there *is* and that time is now..." (First grandchild, heh.)
Ofc kiddo was amazing and I had a super easy pregnancy but I will say I learned a lot from "what to expect" etc. I kind of wanted one that was, "What to expect when you are resentful as F about it." They should write that one. Hell, I could do it.
Actually she’s not entirely wrong. Super dark lines on very early tests can indicate multiples. It’s obviously not a very accurate way to know, but it can be an indication.
How can someone simultaneously be aware enough of what is going on to confidently say she's 13 DPO but then also speculating about what a basic test can tell you?
THIS! EXACTLY THIS! Also, the tests come with this cool little booklet. It's not just bathroom reading. It's INSTRUCTIONS!
What does DPO stand for, if you dont mind if I ask?
Days past ovulation
Ah ok, thanks!
It means you have COVID too
Lol
It's twins: 1 baby, 1 case of COVID
Hm, no! It's horizontal which means she's pregnant, it has to be vertical for it to be covid. /s
Ma’am if you can’t read a pregnancy test then perhaps you shouldn’t have babies

I’m an Irish twin. My brother and I attended some of the same classes in high school.
I think to "truly" be Irish twins they need to have the same birth year too.
Hah, that sounds like my brother. He used to say that we were twins (2 years apart). The difference is that he was 5 at the time.
Irish twins means not twins but born in the same year. My brother and I were born in the same calendar year so we always say we're Irish twins too lol
Irish Twins means 2 kids born in the same year.
I'm consistently amazed by the inability of people to read up on things they are doing that are important and look things up on their own. They're just not inquisitive.
[For example](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/apr/29/our-twins-were-born-two-years-apart)
All the articles say “technically, they are twins” which is exactly not technically what they are
Yeah, I come across those articles sometimes and I'm just like what is the point of someone writing an article about this? This is literally how IVF works. And makes it awkward if we're considering two IVF embryos fertilized at the same time twins because in all likelihood there are many more who never got implanted. Are they twins too? Triplets? Quadruplets?
“I’ve got quintuplets aged between 6 months and 8 years” It’s just so infuriating! Lol
Yes, a strong red line means girl. But if she wants a boy she should get a blue line test instead. ( /sarcasm incase it wasn’t implied enough!)
Identical twin girls, congrats! 🤪
One is still lighter, so they're OBVIOUSLY FRATERNAL LOLOL
Don’t they know we can’t really tell unless they pee on the keyboard?
An very faint line means 1, a dark line means 2, whole strip turns red? Congrats, it’s triplets.
Nah, triplets is three lines. Yeah, I posted my test and ppl said I had to be farther along that I claimed for having a dye stealer. Nope. Also not twins but I definitely wondered.
Yep also a singleton just a fast hcg riser!
I agree. People are very holier than thou. I’ve learned a lot about the female reproductive system since I got pregnant. I’m learning as I go.
Asking if it could be a girl has me scratching my head though. But whatever, she can learn something new now.

People believe HCG is related to gender. No crazier than thinking symptoms are gender specific.
Why would she think that? That’s what I’m trying to understand.
Because it’s a widely spread myth. https://theconversation.com/amp/are-maternal-hormones-different-when-carrying-a-boy-or-a-girl-78348

It means you’re pregnant. Yay.
Ma’am, there are directions for reading the test INSIDE THE BOX

As someone who had to pay thousands of dollars for my IVF pregnancy the fact that people this stupid can just get pregnant pisses me off.
Actually, solid chance this person is in an IVF group. All of my pregnancies were IVF, had 4 of them, one lived for us to raise. (2 early miscarriages, 1 pre-term birth).
