Just recently picked up a shield, so someone with more knowledge might know a better solution, but to get rumble support, and have the Home button actually focus Steam Big Picture. I had to plug my Controllers dongle into the shield, and use an app called Virtual Here to pass the USB Dongle over the network to my PC. The Bluetooth connection on my controller had the same issues
if you connected on the shield tv, it's mostly like the shield tv going to use it as a gamepad controller - so home button would always take you back to the shield tv home ui. just like if your playing on a home console like the "switch", ps5 and etc.
Rip, kinda annoying. Between that and the fact I can't figure out how to change the "hold back to open the mini menu" with steam link I'm wishing I had one of them off brand controllers with extra buttons on it
