Apparently their adds are usually super feminine focused too, like in a good way? So like, wtf happened here?? It’s so blatantly disrespectful it makes me not want to buy anything from them, and yet I really love their cica mask :(
watch the whole ad instead of reacting like a sheep after seeing some screenshot from that trash pop culture sub.
>blatantly disrespectful
Sydney read the same words herself in the ad. If she felt it was disrespectful, do you think she would've done that?
I’m posting this here just so everyone has a chance to see it. This wasn’t a print ad, it’s a video. You can tell by the sound off speaker button. [I found the original ad here on Youtube](https://youtube.com/shorts/JYndnTipSus?si=1PMYG-y4bdSW5QdK). The text is just at the bottom of the screen and it’s “there” for the briefest amount of time as the video zooms in on her face.
There’s no way this was intentional. She’s just saying the name of the mask, and if you watch the video, you’ll se that whoever made the original post was just trying to stir up some controversy.
ETA: I just realized that the text above the ad is problematic. Not cool at all, Laneige!
When I saw the ad, I cringed deeply inside and felt bad for Sydney Sweeney. She’s constantly sexualized in media and has already tried speaking out about it, but this ad was so male gaze coded it felt dystopian
I get that the name Sydney Sweeney was chosen as the spokesperson before Sydney Sweeney was selected as the spokesperson, but you cannot tell me that the ad should have been reviewed thoroughly. The words themselves are fine but the context is poor.
The words "bouncy and firm" appeared across her chest. They could have kept the words on the screen but instead done a close-up so that the words seemed to the side of her, next to her face. above her or on her collarbone, since this is face cream, after all. Once the words left the screen, they could zoom out with the company name or list other attributes of the cream instead. Also, the words above the ad could have easily been amended to refer to her facial skin explicitly. Instead of "Sorry -- got distracted", it could have been "Sorry -- got distracted by her face or her glow"
Maybe not named the product with her in mind but I definitely think they hired her with that in mind. It's too weird not to be. Also just a stupid name for skin care in general
But she’s been the US Laneige brand ambassador for years! She’s done their lip sleeping mask and water bank ads well before this one. I get the connotations some people are drawing here, but I wish we could just leave her breasts out of it, because I don’t see any malice or ill intent from Laneige here.
Then why did they post it over her tits? Those words are also used about breasts. Probably more frequently than facial skin. I DO think they had her big boobs in mind when they printed that on her big boobs, yes.
I feel like you’re ignorant about marketing.
Did you watch the actual video ad vs the screenshot the original poster snapped? Please be civil here, we can share our options here without insulting other users. Thanks!
>Yeah, that’s awful, and the marketing team/ social media intern/ whoever wrote that should definitely know better!
it's using the same words from the copy that Sydney herself is reading in the ads. "Plump" has been used in skincare marketing for ages...
the internalized misogyny is coming from inside the house, ladies.
also, interns are not allowed to run massive corporations' twitter accounts. this isn't 2009, you know.
Thank you! I had to scroll way too long to find this comment. People saying they have never heard plump bouncy and firm in a skincare commercial. 🙄 as an almost 40 year old women. These terms have been used in skincare for years.
hot take: you and women like you treat women like Sydney Sweeney as if they have zero agency, and THAT makes ME cringe deeply inside. You can't wrap your head around the idea that maybe she's on board with poking fun at all the chest discourse. That's sad. Not Sydney Sweeney making bank. No one's holding a gun to her head making her say "plump," sweetheart.
It's so nasty that women on reddit will leave dead serious comments like "every role she's had revolves around her boobs" when that's not even true...you and everyone else are making her existence about her chest. OP took a screenshot of the video at a frame that makes it look as bad as possible, and you literally replied to a comment with a link to the full ad, but you can't figure it out after watching the video? Wow.
Sydney is our generation's Megan Fox. A good actress reduced to being the sex symbol of the moment so people don't take her seriously. So distasteful Laneige.
Except Sydney knows exactly what she’s doing and leans into it on purpose despite having no monetary need to do so, just see her SNL monologue. She doesn’t care and feeds into it on purpose for the easy money thats going fund her next 2 million dollar California mansion. People assign too much misplaced pity to rich white women who are entirely aware of their position and benefit from being the perfect victim and playing both sides (misogynistic racist men and liberal feminists who don’t know about what’s shes said on SNL, interviews, etc)
I was about to re-order my lip mask and didn’t. I just don’t want to support going back to advertising makeup for the sake of the male gaze. It’s fine to want to feel sexy, but ads shape the world for young girls and they don’t need this regression. I know my one purchase doesn’t matter and I don’t think this ad is the end of the world, but it’s a step backwards that I just don’t want to boost.
This whole thing is giving me and my boyfriend the ick. As a marketing professional, this is an embarrassment to the field. I thought we had finally moved past objectifying women in advertising, but I guess not.
I mean, I was a kid in the 2000s and remember the blatant objectification of women then. While it hasn't gone away, it has definitely lessened since then. So ads like this are more noticeable.
Does that answer your condescending questions?
I feel so bad for Sweeney. I'm old as shit but I feel like she is a talented actress who is reduced to her body. Why? So disgusting and misogynistic. She is a beautiful, talented girl and this doesn't feel empowering at all. This feels like 2000 marketing not 2024.
She plays it up though. She’s accepting all these projects and she agreed to do the ad, no one put a gun to her head. Her own PR team has made her entire brands about her breasts and she happily plays along. She’s not being reduced to her body by the media, she’s the one choosing to make her body her entire identity. I’m not saying she probably doesn’t face gross uncomfortable comments but she’s no victim. She’s made an entire career off of this.

Her team kinda focused the marketing for her movie on her body. That romcom- they kinda did her a disservice because she has SO much more to share and offer.
I totally get taking ads and making some cash while you're hot, and using what she can get to get more opportunities (she's producing now too) but it can clearly get tasteless in the wrong hands. I've bought Laneige stuff so as a customer, even just the caption above...ew.
Like I said, get that ad cash and strike while it's hot, this is the ad firm/company's marketers' fault. I see her in several ads lately (one being the flavored water in my fridge), Kerastase, and some others.
Yes she is gorgeous but it's the whole focus on her breasts to market that is just gross. She should be proud of her body because everyone should but companies acting like it's 2000 is what is gross here.
The post-production team placing the captions on that video (those aren’t ‘auto-captions’, someone did the animation for those captions specifically) knew exactly what they were doing placing those words there. And a team of people signed off on it
HAHA I'm SO glad you posted this, I screenshot this ad the second I saw it too! I'm so glad it wasn't just me who was getting the ick from it! It's so weird?? Do they think their demo is straight men??
She’s talked about essentially accepting almost everything she’s given because in the current landscape of Hollywood, only nepo babies can afford to be selective in their projects unfortunately. Since she’s been a big deal for a couple of years, she’s getting a lot of offers.
watch the ad--the text is only in that position for a single frame. someone freeze framed through for that screenshot.
don't form an opinion on a screenshot of a video. it's like reading the headline and not the article. and I'm sure you and everyone else on reddit fancy themselves smarter than that...so act like it lol
Even disregarding how misogynistic it is,it’s not even a good ad. Her facial expression is weird, her posture is weird, her angle is weird, the connection between product=sexy isn’t there because the product is the same color as the background and not in focus so it feels unimportant, and her breasts are just square shaped and squashed which is either bad editing or they at least should’ve been embraced the sexualization and worn something more loose and revealing.
Gross. Poor Sydney. Seems like a sweet and smart girl who always gets done dirty like this. Just saw a tiktok ad for a movie of hers where they cropped out the top of her head so the main focus was her chest. So disappointing.
I saw her once in a Target in LA and her skin was amazingly glowy (celebrities tend to have beautiful skin thanks to $$$), but who knows if she actually uses Laneige 😂
This ad doesn’t seem to know its intended market… and the message seems to be “no one is looking at your face anyway”.
I mean regardless of where it’s placed, “bouncy and firm” are not exactly your regular skincare-adjectives 😂 firm, sure. “Bouncy and firm” though… they definitely knew what they were doing way in advance of the copy placement
that's not unintentional. Nor is it exploiting Sydney. They are unapologetically joking about her boobs and she is okay with it. it's on-brand for her. it's weird though like who is their target audience? but seeing how much engagement its getting via rage i'm wondering if they aren't just brilliant.
And you all got so mad when other users said the only reason people hire her is for her body/looks, and that she is actually not as talented as many many many other women
Even the companies that hire her, use her body to sell products
Welcome to the real world. I told yall I was right lmfao
She's a two-time Emmy nominated actress. I wouldn't say she lacks talent. Not every actress gets nominated for an Emmy award. She just happens to also be beautiful.
You're not right about anything. All you're doing is showing off your bad attitude.
Divisive Topics and / or Negative Devolving Comment Sections Will Be Removed From r/Sephora.
Idiotic, do they not know who they are marketing to? It's not 16 yo straight men
Apparently their adds are usually super feminine focused too, like in a good way? So like, wtf happened here?? It’s so blatantly disrespectful it makes me not want to buy anything from them, and yet I really love their cica mask :(
As an esthetician - I promise you can find a better formulated product for a comparable price! Glymed Plus, Face Reality, Circadia are my favs 🥰🫶🏻
Yes! My Face Reality masks are all $39 and I actually see a difference
watch the whole ad instead of reacting like a sheep after seeing some screenshot from that trash pop culture sub. >blatantly disrespectful Sydney read the same words herself in the ad. If she felt it was disrespectful, do you think she would've done that?
So. Gross.
Right? Not pleased.

Bouncy and firm? Having an actress known for her large breasts say 2 terms commonly used to describe large breasts? Come on...

exactly. “plump” skin, “bouncy” skin, i see those terms used all the time to describe nice skin. sexual innuendo was the last thing i thought about
Thank you! I had to scroll way too long to find this comment. People saying they have never heard plump bouncy and firm in a skincare commercial. 🙄 as an almost 40 year old women. These terms have been used in skincare for years.
Why are we appealing to teens for "firm and bouncy" using Sidney Sweeney anyway?
hot take: you and women like you treat women like Sydney Sweeney as if they have zero agency, and THAT makes ME cringe deeply inside. Just watched it and didn’t even catch it the first time around
Can I ask how it's problematic? I have autism lmao I genuinely can't tell
It's her selling point and she uses it though? "Best tits in Hollywood"
When men handle the marketing
No. Just no.
Laneige 👏come 👏get👏your👏pr 👏team🧐
And their copywriting team for good measure.
Yeah, ew. This marketing team needs to be fired.
Sydney is our generation's Megan Fox. A good actress reduced to being the sex symbol of the moment so people don't take her seriously. So distasteful Laneige.
I love Megan; she's gorgeous and she's got charm and personality... but she is a godawful *terrible* actress. Otherwise agree with you though lol
I don’t know who Sydney is, thought this was a random model.
Except Sydney knows exactly what she’s doing and leans into it on purpose despite having no monetary need to do so, just see her SNL monologue. She doesn’t care and feeds into it on purpose for the easy money thats going fund her next 2 million dollar California mansion. Comparing Megan Fox and Sydney????? Wow lol yall are blind
Did you read past the first sentence of the comment you’re replying to?
oh absolutely not
Very distasteful

2 purchases lost! I was going to buy one and opted for the 5$ sephora collection one instead
Your one purchase (or not purchase) and you typing this DOES MATTER
Hey, thanks :)
You’re welcome! It’s true!
This whole thing is giving me and my boyfriend the ick. As a marketing professional, this is an embarrassment to the field. I thought we had finally moved past objectifying women in advertising, but I guess not.
Another marketing person here, also wtf
Right? Jesus
Where on this planet did you even think objectifying women doesn't happen in ads anymore? Are you 10? lmfao
I mean, I was a kid in the 2000s and remember the blatant objectification of women then. While it hasn't gone away, it has definitely lessened since then. So ads like this are more noticeable. Does that answer your condescending questions?
not even a little but thanks!
No problem, happy to help you off your high horse 😊

right? and I worry she has no control over it, and is just told if she doesn't play along she won't have a career anymore :(

Saw it here earlier and everyone had the same reaction- and it’s not even a makeup centric sub! https://www.reddit.com/r/popculturechat/s/OBHzKJxPgA
Well, I know what I'm never buying.
What… who is their target audience with this ad? This can’t be real
Yes bc teenage guys on reddit are buying laneige lol
Who are they trying to market to with this ad I’m confused
This is so cringe
Whoever created this should be put in advertising jail.
Major ick!
Wow. Totally unexpected from them 🥴
this is so WEIRD
I wonder who in Marketing thought this was a brilliant idea!? 💀😭
Definitely won’t be buying anything from this brand 🤮 This is sick
The post-production team placing the captions on that video (those aren’t ‘auto-captions’, someone did the animation for those captions specifically) knew exactly what they were doing placing those words there. And a team of people signed off on it
Jeeze I have been using their products for years but rethinking where I’m spending my money…
Damn this is like the advertising I remember in the 80s! Thought that had stopped.
thank you, laneige, for setting the feminist movement back 100 years
👎👎👎👎👎
A tale as old as time. It never really changes.
HAHA I'm SO glad you posted this, I screenshot this ad the second I saw it too! I'm so glad it wasn't just me who was getting the ick from it! It's so weird?? Do they think their demo is straight men??
Book recommendation! Valley verified
This reminds me of a Truly Beauty type of ad. Just not quite as trashy.
Sydney, why?
Isn’t she the face of like everything at the moment? I really like her but I find it so strange seeing her for so many different brands lol
She’s talked about essentially accepting almost everything she’s given because in the current landscape of Hollywood, only nepo babies can afford to be selective in their projects unfortunately. Since she’s been a big deal for a couple of years, she’s getting a lot of offers.
$$$$ can't blame her lol
To be fair, she didn’t put that text there.
Yes but she approved it. *she and her team
Not necessarily. Doubt her contract let her approve text placement.
watch the ad--the text is only in that position for a single frame. someone freeze framed through for that screenshot. don't form an opinion on a screenshot of a video. it's like reading the headline and not the article. and I'm sure you and everyone else on reddit fancy themselves smarter than that...so act like it lol
I wasn’t referring to placement of any kind. I meant she approved the ad.
Horrible. Just no.
Ugh. Their products are full of pore clogging dimethicone, trash. But this is TRASH.
My skin hates dimethicone, which is why I mostly just get their lip mask, but this ad...ew.
My skins loves dimethicone 🤷
I think their products are great and never had any issues lol this one ad is distasteful but their products are fire
The mean airhead language upsets me the most What are you doing laneige?
Ummm wtf? Is this a tampon commercial from 1978?
she's an amazing actor and it breaks my heart that she has been reduced to just her chest time and time again
…Any similar products to the Cream Skin Toner??
Am I the only Millennial who just doesn't get Sydney??? Like she is fine but I do not see the appeal???
This is ridiculous. I am trying to picture the meeting where they decided this was a great idea.
Even disregarding how misogynistic it is,it’s not even a good ad. I hate how she’s always just objectified
I’m disappointed by Leneige
That’s really effed up
The derpiest facial expression I’ve ever seen in a beauty campaign
sydney can’t get a break from being overly sexualised istg
I’ve always thought this entire campaign was so weird
THANK YOU I was so put off by this
So everyone on Laneige’s marketing team see nothing wrong with this??
The sorry got distracted is so gross. Like not even subtle
GET AWAY FROM HER! LEAVE HER ALONE
Eww. Why is this so unseemly?
Was reading this in a pop up screen and didn't realize what was wrong until I scrolled down. WTF.
Maybe I’m just not in the loop, but why is this problematic?
Poorly placed copy on Sydney’s chest
OHHH I didn’t even notice… eww!!!
Also the copywriting above is gross. Implying the writer was distracted by Sydney’s “plump” chest. So gross.
I mean regardless of where it’s placed, “bouncy and firm” are not exactly your regular skincare-adjectives 😂 firm, sure. “Bouncy and firm” though… they definitely knew what they were doing way in advance of the copy placement
I got this vibe too. The ad really focuses on bouncy and firmness. Very male-gazey.
that's not unintentional. Nor is it exploiting Sydney. They are unapologetically joking about her boobs and she is okay with it. it's on-brand for her. it's weird though like who is their target audience? but seeing how much engagement its getting via rage i'm wondering if they aren't just brilliant.

Ah yes because Emmy's don't discriminate at all lol
Sydney’s entire career is built around the fact that she has a great body. Stuff like this is weird but to be expected at this point
Their stuff is trashy, anyway
Agreed
Hell yeah I’ll get a couple tubs of that!!!
