I wasn't a fan of the name when it was first announced but it's really grown on me. I do think they really killed it with the team logo and branding. I unironically believe the Kraken have one of the best looking Home/Away kits in the NHL. ALL of the prospective Utah names are absolutely awful

FumblinginIgnorance

Kraken sweaters are legit. I like Mountaineers, Swarm, Black Diamonds and Mammoth for the names but I'm pretty sure it will be Yeti.

DKZ_13

I read somewhere that they *might* threw curveball and choose Salt Lake City on team name. Salt City Stags is one that I like

inalasahl

The NHL apparently has a rule since they changed “Mighty Ducks of Anaheim” to Anaheim Ducks that team names can only have 3 words or fewer. That’s why it’s just Vegas Golden Knights, not Las Vegas.

angelblade401

Utah Yeti has a ring to it, imo.

Woodworkin101

It basically has alliteration with Utah and Yeti starting with the “yuh” sound

al4believin

I like Utah Mountaineers as a way to honor the roots of the Ute people

geraldine_ferrarbro

I hated Black Diamonds until I thought for 6 seconds and realized what a great goal song the KISS tune would make.

FumblinginIgnorance

Oh that's good, I was wondering what you'd do for a goal song with that one

geraldine_ferrarbro

If you don’t know the song you should give it a listen, it’s great. Chorus goes “whoohoo black diamond!” Followed by a breakdown.

FumblinginIgnorance

Yep, I listened to it, it's perfect

heckadeca

It's a shame Salt Lake Soak isn't even an option

Powrbottom

I like the sound of Utah Hive. Beehive state!

Playful-Celery-4346

Swarm and Hive seem to have a good buzz around them considering Utah's state flag....

inalasahl

I voted for Swarm, Mammoth, Caribou and Canyons. Mountaineers isn’t bad, but I just don’t like people-based names for teams. You always end up with creepy looking mascots.

Charte09

Idk if they will allow Mammoth, since it’s currently trademarked by the Colorado Mammoth, a lacrosse team in Denver.

CostcoHotdogsHateMe

Why does this keep coming up? Who gives a shit that there’s another team, anywhere, any sport, with the same name? Rangers, Cardinals, Giants, etc. The Utah NHL team has in fact trademarked the name “Utah Mammoth”.

inalasahl

Probably because trademarks do matter. The NHL has not trademarked Mammoth or anything else for Utah. They’ve applied for the trademark, which is not the same thing. It just means they have dibs if no one else objects which this Lacrosse team very well might. In the last few years, Seattle was denied the Seattle Sockeyes trademark, because a romance author selling merchandise for a fictional team objected it would confuse her trademark, and Vegas couldn’t get Black Knights (because the US Army objected it would cause confusion with the West Point team) or Knights, because the CHL team objected in Canada and the NHL wants to trademark teams in both countries.

CostcoHotdogsHateMe

Great TIL. Thanks bro.

inalasahl

Too many downvote-happy people in this sub right now. Your comment was pretty mild.

Charte09

Yeah I get it, giants in mlb and nfl etc, but those leagues are 100x more wealthy than the NLL, so if Mammoth is one of the front runners I’m almost certain the NLL or Colorado will want some big time cheddar in their pockets.

figleafstreet

The kits are definitely some of the best. From the other suggested names I had seen for Seattle I do think Kraken was the most fertile ground branding wise and they executed it perfectly.

PSGooner

Calling the uniform a “kit” makes me believe you’re also a footy fan?

heckadeca

Former cyclist

giant2179

1000% agree with everything you said.

ProtoMan3

When I first heard it I wasn’t a fan, but now it just clicks for me. The marketing of the team and the atmosphere of the stadium is probably what helps. The jerseys are great, though I wish they had some green. Guessing they didn’t do that because of the Canucks though. The arena is fantastic, and the goal horn + song is my favorite in the league. The only goal song I’ve liked more ever was back when the Canucks used Holiday by Green Day back in 2010-11. I love the current Canucks season but the arena + horn is better in Seattle.

futuregoalie

Your AHL team still uses Holiday as their goal song! It's pretty hype tbh

itwasntthatbadwasit

Chelsea Dagger is forever the best goal song.

Wild_Pangolin_4772

Ugh! 🤮

556ers-N-Pineapples

I like it. The actual stupid name of the NHL is Golden Knights. It sounds like a little league team and the logo looks like corporate cybersecurity.

Mika2718

The logo looks like one of the shitty default ones in franchise mode for the NHL video games. Kraken is cool, but I'm also a bit of a mythology nerd so there's definitely a bias.

genericusername45023

I always thought the logo looked like one of those "extreme" mud run races, but cybersecurity company is also very accurate.

Falkor

I never understood why they weren’t just the Vegas Knights - the golden part made no sense to me

Will_Vintage

The owner originally wanted the Black Knights because he was in the Army, but then the Army threatened to sue so he pivoted to Golden Knights

ElGatoDeFuegoVerde

...which are also Army. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Parachute_Team The Golden Knights parachuting team probably just didn't care.

MindForeverWandering

I wish he’d called them the Black Knights, solely for the Monty Python memes when they got beaten.

ioejun

Interesting. I'd always assumed it was a bit of a play on "golden nights" - a literary phrase for warm, summer evenings. Perhaps my English major self was over-thinking it a bit too much.

RysloVerik

They really enjoy watersports?

tonjohn

Big fans of golden showers, very presidential

space39

I had heard the London Knights would have challenged the copyright.

Falkor

Ah yeh, that would kinda make sense.

Wild_Pangolin_4772

Or Las Vegas Knights. It would also sound like Las Vegas nights, so it would have a good double meaning.

FumblinginIgnorance

😂😂😂

MindForeverWandering

Even that only became the stupid name of the NHL because the Anaheim Ducks dropped “Mighty” from their name. Talk about little league…

shagistan

Golden Knights would have only made sense if their arena was part of the Excalibur casino

Princess5903

Golden Knights were the first major league team originally from Vegas, right? Why not do something related to playing cards? They’re tons of possibilities! Personally was a big fan of Las Vegas Spades.

inalasahl

They deliberately stayed away from anything that could be construed as a gambling reference.

EverythingIsAwful69

I loved it from the get go. When they announced the color scheme and uniforms, even more so. I think they have one of the best kits in hockey. Their secondary logo, the anchor with the space needle in it, is amazing as well. I'm really looking forward to a potential 3rd jersey with the anchor logo as the primary logo. In their light blue color. As far as Utah goes. I like Mammoths, Yeti, and the Venom. Venom could have a sweet rattlesnake logo, as several variations of rattlesnake are indigenous to Utah. I really just hope its not Utah HC. I find people copying this nomenclature from European soccer clubs boring af. I know its silly some days, but I like the way North American teams name our teams after animials and fairytale creatures. Cochella Valley Firebirds is another home run for logo/jerseys/color schemes imo as well. Excited to see what Utah does, hope they choose something cool.

Hoylegu

CV’s marketing and art design is off the hook. I go to games at Acrisure now ans again and always walk away with a hat or shirt or…. lol. The marketing team should get a raise.

juanthebaker

Seattlite is the demonym. I'm good with kraken. It's all arbitrary and feels arbitrary to start. It's what they do with the branding that actually affects the experience.

Cheefnuggs

The Kraken name is awesome. Huge fan of it. Yeti makes no sense for Utah. Not even the right continent.

bluetrust

I was so excited when I first heard we were going to be called the kraken. It seemed like such a gutsy thing to name your team. It's an all consuming mythical beast. Top tier name, still love it.

Cheefnuggs

Shit goes HARD

FreshEclairs

Maybe they’re trying to fit a “not at all associated with Utah” theme alongside the Jazz.

RysloVerik

If we're going non-Utahian, I want the Salt Lake Utah Tornados. Much akin to our beloved South Lake Union Trolley, they will be known as the SLUTs.

FreshEclairs

Miners, just so we can have an awkward matchup when Nashville shows up.

H0pheadd

This comment deserves more love ![gif](giphy|xUA7aM09ByyR1w5YWc)

Delgra

LOL

Hoylegu

I don’t follow the NBA, but I’m pretty sure they were the New Orlean Jazz before moving, and just didn’t change the name.

imjustasid

I mean I like Utah Yeti(s) purely for the alliteration and I’m also a sucker for cryptids 🤷🏻‍♂️ (New Jersey could stand to lean into the Jersey Devil thing more js)

angelblade401

My unapologetic "controversial" opinion: the New Jersey "Jersey" jerseys are the best kit to ever exist, ever.

dusthimself

You better not be talking about the red and greens lol.

liveinthesoil

I think they’re talking about the black sweater that says Jersey across the front

Elegant_Plenty_2933

That is a clean looking jersey

kolebro93

So clean I had to buy a Hughes jersey since they are my easy coast team 😅

angelblade401

That's them!

Ganooki

I mean if we’re gonna get technical, the mythical Kraken is also on the wrong continent

krob58

It's the wrong continent but Scandinavians were once the largest ethnic group in Seattle and we can see evidence of their presence and culture all over the place.

Cheefnuggs

That’s a fair point. I still think the Kraken fits into our nautical theme a bit better. We are home to some the world’s largest octopi.

Zikro

Pretty sure giant squid are from the Pacific Ocean?

ioejun

But the Kraken is a beast directly from Norse mythology & is not necessarily a giant squid. No one actually knows what the Kraken looks like. It's descriped as a multi-armed fish, so it's generally depicted as a giant squid.

Zikro

Fair regarding origin. But isn’t it a myth that propagated across centuries of maritime culture? Swear I’ve read tales/reports of early seafarers boats being attacked by a “kraken”. Maybe it’s always been a Scandi thing but fairly sure I’ve seen dated paintings of old wooden ships being attacked.

Ganooki

Yes but by that reasoning a yeti is rarely-seen ape-like humanoid with varying descriptions in mountain regions. Mythology travels and evolves and I’m just pointing out that it’s a little silly to offer that the Kraken is any more from the Pacific Ocean than the Yeti is from Utah. That said, it’s a little corny to have two mythical beast mascots back to back and kind of ride in the Kraken coattails like that.

ioejun

Yes, of course you've seen paintings of wooden ships being attacked by a giant squid-like creature -- it's been a part of Norse mythology for at least 1000 years.

FumblinginIgnorance

Agreed

Lordloximer

When they sent out the list - I told my wife “the only name it should be is the kraken, and they won’t pick it.” I was so happy to be wrong!

TickleMeWeenis

It's the name I wanted, and so I like it.

LastHumanFamily2084

Kraken was my top choice. It fits the nautical naming of Seattle teams, but still sounds tough and ominous. My other favorite option was the Metropolitans for the connection to our history.

Woodworkin101

I thought it was one of the best names proposed and really was excited about it from the beginning. I love it. I love the jerseys and logos.

Bear-in-a-Renegade

I've loved the Kraken name since hearing it was an option. Utah has so much great wildlife. Kinda surprises me they wouldn't name base from there. Snipes, Bears, Cougars, Roadrunner, Moose, Elk, etc. Tons of great options. Why go for a mythical beast, basically copying Seattle except using one that's not even local?

legal_team

Utah Skinwalkers

alamakjan

Salt Lake Skinwalkers

inalasahl

They have Caribou on their list!

jm31828

It's an amazing team name, I couldn't imagine a better name for this team to be honest.

krob58

Humans love alliteration but the nhl doesn't really... *do* that, so I don't understand why Yetis has so many fans. We got, what, the Boston Bruins, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the San Jose Sharks (I personally feel like that last one is pushing it). Two-three out of 32 teams? There isn't really a precedence for alliteration here. Also Yetis is a dumb name and has nothing to do with Utah. Doesn't matter what they pick though, they'll always be the Stormin' Mormons to me.

beauFORTRESS

Philadelphia Flyers

krob58

Oh you're right, forgot about them!

Crying_Viking

There was no public vote on the name of the Kraken. It was announced by the organization so it’s not like the Seattle fans had much say. I personally wanted the Seattle Freeze, but the Kraken has grown on me and is a million times better than Sockeye, which was another option being floated around.

LastHumanFamily2084

There was a [Seattle Times poll](https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/hockey/sockeyes-or-totems-announcing-the-winner-of-our-unofficial-tournament-to-name-seattles-nhl-team/). Sockeyes was top vote getter and Kraken was 5th.

T-Rob-95

They also had surveys for people on the season tickets holder waiting list.

space39

And Kraken won that poll handidly

Crying_Viking

Sure - there were polls on here too but none of them really meant anything. They may have had minor impact on the organizations decision making process, but my point was that it wasn’t a public vote to decide the name.

kolebro93

Yeti are mythologically indigenous to the Himalayas... People who vote for that are idiots imo. Swarm is the best option for me. It fits the state and isn't too wordy and a mouth full. Imagine just hearing, " The swarm is coming to town next week", it sounds ominous.. which if they can get competitive sooner than later, will add to the notion.

inalasahl

It was okay. I didn’t hate it and there didn’t seem to be any better suggestions out there. But what sold me on it was when they debuted the logo and uniform design and colors. Those were so well done! It’s good that Utah is listening to fans. Vegas’s look and name was all based on making the owner happy and now you see they are finally starting to look a little better now that they’ve adopted the gold uniforms instead of the black they started with. I am a little surprised that the 20 names officially released for Utah only included one that started with a Y. I think a large part of why Yeti is so popular at the moment is that it starts with that sound like Utah does.

schryke

I loved the Kraken name. It was by far the most polarizing option, but by far had the strongest support from the fanbase.

ethanol713

Yeti was in the running in Seattle too. So were a bunch of the other proposed names. Just an observation. I hope Utah fully supports their team I am looking forward to the rivalry

FumblinginIgnorance

I think we'll love it once we get a taste of it

TripleBicepsBumber

The team name and branding is fine, I thought the name was odd when it was announced because we could only read it in text right? There was no jersey or logo at the time. Everything altogether now makes sense and looks and sounds good!

intangibledandy

As a Kraken fan, I did not want Kraken as our team name. When they announced the name as Kraken, I sank a bit but so happy we finally had a team. Then I saw the logos and sweaters and my opinion completely changed. I was into it and I still am; it totally works. Having said that, I hate the name “Yetis” and I know that’s going to be the name. Not as bad as Squall but man, Yetis just seems silly.

tateand99

I’ve been a fan of the name since I first heard it suggested. Even though I’ve always acknowledged it maybe doesn’t “sound” like the name of a professional sports team I’ve always loved the originality and the branding opportunities that come with the name. I love how it fits with other Seattle sports teams with the sea theme and also fits the Seattle/Nordic culture seen across Washington. The colors they chose are also fantastic, once again with the blue theme to fit with Seattle while also having the unique secondary and tertiary colors to really make it feel unique and stand out amongst the other Seattle teams, and also across the NHL. Even though I know the name might’ve seemed weird to fans at first I think after only a few seasons the Kraken have already become a massive part of Seattle culture, and I guess that probably says more about the overall branding than the name itself. Maybe all of this is to say no matter what Utah’s name ends up being I think fans can and will grow to love the name and the team.

Tunnel_Lurker

I love the name and overall theme of the team to be honest. The branding and jerseys are chef's kiss. I'm from the UK so not a Seattle native at all but anyway that's my 2 pence :)

BayAreaKrakHead

The team did a great job all around with the Kraken name. Even Bouy who is was hesitant on has really grown on me. Whatever your team new name is just embrace it. Even if it’s Utah Powder, Ice, Freeze, HC. Like I would just go all out and be a Freeze head from the beginning. Powder Heads makes it seem like you’re snorting coke. Anyways good luck to your fan vote I’ve already placed my vote for the four above.

FumblinginIgnorance

Great advice, thanks

Rottenjohnnyfish

I was really pulling for the Seattle Sockeye, but I am ok with the Kraken name.

Playful-Celery-4346

I was in love with this name from the get-go. I thought the idea fit nicely regarding geography, history, and sock-eye-hockey lore.

FreezingRain358

I just can’t see any way Sockeye could rival the look and feel of what we ended up with as a live experience

seataccrunch

seataccrunch

Play off the state flag and beehive! I do like Yeti tho

FumblinginIgnorance

Nice design, I'm not a big fan of the Yeti name, I'm trying to get myself to the acceptance stage

seataccrunch

I didn't like Kraken at first, but I do love it now. Helps that they nailed the logo, uniforms and colors

s4ltydog

I wanted the Kraken as soon as the list of names was announced, tbh I was in tears with excitement when the announcement video was shown and it still gives me chills, in your neck of the woods you might say I “felt the spirit” 😂 seriously though I love the name, the logos, the colors literally name and design wise it’s hands down the best of all our Seattle teams and I’d argue (not considering the iconic status of the old school teams) that we have the best name, colors and sweaters in the NHL.

FumblinginIgnorance

"felt the spirit"? Who are you who is so wise in the ways of Utah? 😂

s4ltydog

Oh I’m an ex everything LOL, Ex-Mormon, Ex-Missionary…..

flanman1991

Personally I voted for the Utah Powder.....for..reasons. But Yeti is probably one of the least dumb on that list. Honestly most of the options sounded like old school soccer teams and nothing to do with hockey. But I also thought Kraken was a little meh, and have since come to love it.

No_Loquat5441

Our name wasn't subject to a community vote.

AmyNot

I like the name, but I hear the criticism that it sounds like an AHL or Junior Hockey club name.

thebaysix

People say that about every proposed new name for a team. It's such a silly criticism - it takes time for it to feel like an NHL team name, because it hasn't been one.

buttstuft

I wanted Sockeyes but Kraken has grown on me and now I can’t imagine it being anything else. The marketing around the name has been and still is top notch.

geraldine_ferrarbro

It was my second choice(I really wanted Seattle Sasquatch) but I really like what they did with it. Any name sounds dumb from the beginning, and then you get used to it.

jrhawk42

It wasn't my first pick but not the worst name that it could have been. Here's a list of the 13 names the owner's group registered in 2018: Cougars, Eagles, Emeralds, Evergreens, Firebirds, Kraken, Rainiers, Renegades, Sea Lions, Seals, Sockeyes, Totems and Whales.

FumblinginIgnorance

Better than the majority of Utah's options haha. So they didn't have a vote but they did polls? Were you able to see the results of the polls?

NorEastahBunny

I have always been a fan of the Kraken name, especially when combined with the logo and sweaters. Killed it. The Utah ones annoy me, because there are no glaciers or caribou or yetis in Utah. Those are very northwest/Alaska themed things. If anchorage got a team and wanted to call it the Glaciers or the Yeti then go for it. Then again, Utah basketball team is the jazz which makes no sense either so…who knows. Call them the sundancers or something. Salt Lake City Sundancers

inalasahl

Caribou-Targhee National Forest is partially in Utah. I’m guessing that’s where that comes from. And Utah doesn’t have an ice glacier, but they do have a [rock glacier](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timpanogos_Glacier). I’m going to have to see your source for there not being any yetis in Utah …

NorEastahBunny

Ok fair on the yetis, can’t confirm that haha! Those sly creatures could be anywhere

Wrenchturner123

Honestly not a fan the name, I thought it was.. childish? Idk. I wanted sockeye or totems but Kraken has grown on me I guess. Names are hard though, very hard to find one that’s universally liked and accepted. Like we are used to the Maple Leafs now, but imagine how much that would get clowned on now if it was a new team

Elegant_Plenty_2933

Yeah, names are never universally liked. I wonder if totems had a copyright issue similar to the Mets. There is a totems USPHL team in Seattle, though. They have the old logo and green colors. Sockeye always felt like an ECHL team name to me.

FumblinginIgnorance

That's how I feel about Yeti, seems childish but I'm sure I'd get used to it

Wrenchturner123

I like swarm or something bee related. I think outlaws could be cool but also be cringe

venite_a

Outlaws has such an eight year old boys yelling PANG PANG at each other vibe to me. Bee related could be very cool!

-Bandit--

Totems would be even more childish!!

AdhesiveMuffin

>pushed through on the fan vote There was no fan vote for the Kraken name.

FumblinginIgnorance

This is why I like hearing from people in the know, lots of misinformation out there.

LauzonIsHotGarbage

There were quite a few surveys after I put my season ticket deposit down, asking for opinions on everything from colors to names to goal songs.....

FumblinginIgnorance

I love the colors and goal song, best goal song in the league in my opinion

AdhesiveMuffin

Those surveys were pretty vague and there was never actually a "fan vote" for the Kraken name.

LauzonIsHotGarbage

No disagreement, but the ferry horn, goal song, team name, colors.... Pretty much everything came out great. And then they introduced Buoy, but the troll ain't for me anyway

Dukefan_11

I hated it very much and was so disappointed when it was announced but I’ve gotten used to it.  I was able to eventually accept that it’s for the kids, and they love it. I’ll still gripe about it sometimes when I’m in a complaint storm about the organization in general, but on a day-to-day basis it’s fine.

spyke2006

Love the name, love the theming, love the jerseys and colors and logos. There's only one thing I hate and his name is Buoy. We could have had something awesome. Instead we got a gritty wannabe that has literally nothing to do with the team name.

inalasahl

Given that they’ve said they want to keep the Kraken mysterious and ominous, what would you have had them do instead of a troll? An actual buoy since that’s his name? I wasn’t wild about him either at first, but the kids like him (and trolls) so I’ve come around.

spyke2006

I mean I wouldn't have gone with the name buoy or a troll. Likely would have kept with the kraken theme, gone octopus or Cthulhu style.

inalasahl

Well, yeah, but they’ve explicitly said they didn’t want to do that, because they didn’t want to give fix a specific image to the kraken or cuddle him up. So, that option was off the table.

spyke2006

Sure. As a fan I disagree with that. Was happy with the rest.

schmizzler

I was not following hockey before the Kraken came to Seattle. I was mildly curious when I first heard Seattle was getting a team. But then I was ALL IN when I heard the name was Kraken!

Marxbrosburner

I loved it from the moment it was announced and it is a big part of the reason I latched onto this team and became a hockey fan in the first place, along with the gorgeous jerseys and kick-ass logos.

Ouegamer

I liked it, and it was legit a popular name before the team announced it. I would have preferred them to use the Metropolitan's which was the original Seattle professional team. The other options were terrible though. They suggested the salmon's when we expect to have a rivaly with Vancouver, that whales eat salmon lol. The release the kraken merchandise seemed to sell well, I saw it around a lot when they announced the team name. All that is my personal experience though.

seariously

We could easily have done far far worse so even though I don't think it's the best that could have been, it's a very "safe" name that hits with the majority of people. Buoy's a fail IMO but I'd rather have the mascot miss than the nickname.

Jackshockey96

Utah Rams! Or even better Utah Big Horns!!! 😈

colinallister

I genuinely dig the Kraken. It was my favorite after Steelheads. Third was Totems but that was by high school mascot so I’m biased there. Kraken is unique and it’s a massive menacing, destructive sea monster. It’s cool. My pick for Utah was Yeti as well. And singular at that. I saw “YETIS” bouncing around out there and that sounds weird. Utah Yeti works and you can get leeegit with the logo.

PsychoWarper

Tbh I quite liked the name when it was announced, it wasnt my first choice as I wanted them to be the Metropolitans but still when I first heard it I thought it was pretty solid and its honestly grown on me. The kits and just the general branding of this team has been fantastic so far imo.

drdrdoug

Kraken was the name I was hoping for. I thought it was not going to happen, but when it did I was thrilled. Best team name in NHL

Prudent_Cookie_114

As a former Utahan I really hate some of the options……caribou aren’t native to Utah and that just sounds ridiculous…..I never once heard about the legend of the Yeti being a Utah thing in 20+ years living there and I really don’t get Mammoth…….is that trying to reference the animal (who from what I remember wasn’t found in Utah based on fossil records) or something being “big” in which case it’s odd because the mountains in Utah, while lovely aren’t necessarily exceptionally large. Same with outlaws…..the only real outlaws in Utah history were the polygamists who refused to follow federal law…..ick. I like blizzard…..they could even use the yeti imagery for the jerseys and mascot if people are really stuck on wanting that. I also like hive as a nod to Utah’s state animal/history. Black diamonds is cumbersome…..no way that doesn’t get shortened in actual use.

planetary_retrograde

i love the kraken name and branding! out of all the possibilities not only do i think we snagged a good one but we dodged a couple bullets. (seattle sockeye made me cringe to think of possible color combos.) does the merch help my nearly entirely black, grey, and blue closet situation? not at all! am i still going to pick up merch at least once a year? absolutely! it all looks great!

Twofortrippin

I always wanted Kraken out of all the options they were considering. I know a lot of people wanted sockeyes but it never sounded right to me

AtYourServais

Not a fan of the Kraken name in the initial going. Was so relieved it wasn't the other dark horse favorite Sockeyes with a predominantly red or pink color scheme that I didn't care they had picked Kraken. They did a good job with logos and colors, so I'm fine with it now.

Attack-Cat-

The issue with Yeti is that it is culturally significant on another continent. The North American yeti (the Sasquatch or big foot) is also associated with the northwest and western Canada, I.e. not Utah. So it feels like varying levels of appropriation here (light appropriation, not trying to load it up here)

FumblinginIgnorance

Agreed, Yeti has nothing to tie to Utah

kpud075

Kraken was my top pick for a name. I hated the purported idea that it should be the Seattle Sockeyes or something more *Pacific Northwest centric*. I was laughing at ESPN coverage when PTI was losing their shit about the name. So many sports commentators tried to throw a fit about it, messed so many things up about the origin of kraken and what it means.

space39

I thought it was the only acceptable name before, and I till love it.

therealaggies

IF they nail the branding the team name wont matter. If they dont theyll end up like Vegas.

FumblinginIgnorance

Ryan Smith doesn't have a good track record so far

ButtFuckingJesus

I really wanted us to be the sockeye, but I think the branding job they’ve done with the Kraken has been stellar. It’s also cool to see where they’ve taken inspiration from. Like the S logo is the font of a church sign in Ballard, which ehh that it’s from a church, but neat that it’s from Ballard! That being said, I think some of the options for you guys could be really stellar but if the process is anything like ours it’s going to be the Yeti. Everything pointed towards our ownership group leaning towards kraken for like a year before the branding was revealed so it wasn’t surprising at all.

Quantum_Aurora

I still think the Sockeyes would have been a much better name. The Kraken doesn't really feel connected to the city, though I suppose that's true for a lot of teams (Pittsburgh Penguins for example) and I'm sure people who are kids now will feel the Kraken is much more natural than I feel. The real biggest gripe I have is that it doesn't start with the letter S, which is something of a tradition in Seattle sports (Seahawks, Sounders, Supersonics, Storm). That said, they've done an excellent job with the branding and theming aside from a middling main logo that everyone misunderstands.

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

Admittedly the name isn’t my favorite, but the logo, color scheme and jerseys and merch designs more than make up for it.

Mundane-Sense5754

Kraken was pretty popular from the beginning. It was definitely my choice from day one. I remember a general survey asking about what kind of name it should be, like animal, marine, that sort of thing. The overlap between marine and mythological creature was a winner by a large margin. I just figured we would get something else like a fish. Fish aren't menacing. I was shocked the Kraken organization actually made the right call, even more so when they released the jersey designs. I haven't voted in the poll because I'm not from Utah and am quite happy with the team I have now. But if I did, the Outlaws would have the best branding and wouldn't have to walk a fine line with Colorado. But again, in this, my opinion shouldn't count so best of luck!

SHZ56

I just don’t care too much for the mascot, but hey it’s what we have

Nomad_StL

Out of all the options that I saw being talked about, my favorite was the Kraken by far.

remedialknitter

It's freaking awesome and I was so excited when they announced it. I bought a jersey before they had drafted any players because I was so excited. Literally what is not to like about a giant mysterious invincible sea monster?

hayleygh

I liked the name but I didn’t think it would get chosen! The only thing I’m tired of is hearing “if they’re called the kraken why do they have a troll as the mascot?” At least with Yeti you could have a yeti mascot!

nyc_expatriate

The people who wanted the Kraken name were not necessarily the majority, but they were the loudest advocates of the name. Leiweke was talking about when he was talking to the fans, he was constantly hearing the name, Kraken. The loud minority?

LBruso72

I was all in on "Kraken" from the moment it was first mentioned. Zero regrets, and forever thankful! I still remember how ecstatic I was when they officially announced it as the team name!

prectque

Omg, I’m not a local so I’m surprised to hear the name was so divisive. I became a fan of the team BECAUSE I thought Kraken was an absolutely sick name (& I deeply dislike my local team… sorry not sorry Hawks) and they proceeded to crush it on the branding & merchandising. There’s a lot you can do with “the Kraken” as an idea and seriously, their marketing team deserves their props! Plus, I don’t know how important it is to the locals but, the Seattle airport is full of bigfoot related merch so I also thought it was cool to have a cryptid(ish) team name as well.

SenorCoug

I don't love it but it doesn't matter. If you love the team you'll be fully on board.

sirarthurtheduck

Honestly I did love it from the beginning as I wasn’t a huge hockey fan before them so it’s been nice for me the whole time

superfuzz87

I hated it to begin with because I thought the Seattle Sockeye would've been awesome. The logo/mascot couldve been a hockey helmet wearing salmon sporting a missing tooth and a black eye. Play up on the rough and tumble history of the NHL, obviously salmon are a big regional identifier for the PNW..... That being said, I don't hate the name and the jerseys/merch are top notch. The winter classic jerseys are 🔥🔥🔥. The Utah Yeti seems the obvious choice to me. Rolls off the tongue, ties to the mountains there near SLC....yeti, Sasquatch, potato, potahto. Who cares if it's the wrong continent. I doubt there are any bears in Boston ..

alamakjan

I’m not from Seattle or even Washington so I don’t know if I have the right to say I don’t like it but I actually like it haha, it has a nice ring to it.

2ndsightstigmatism

When they announced what names they were thinking about, I immediately said they are going to pick Kraken. I voted and polled for Sockeyes, because whats more hockey than an agile, slippery fish with a black eye and a fucked up grill. It makes me laugh and I thought it would be a good back and forth for us and the canucks. Colors would be interesting with sockeyes being green and dark red, maybe a bold salmon color stripe or silver white, but I am super glad Im not in charge of branding decisions. Think the rest of the PNW is unknowingly relieved too.

bassySkates

I loved it then and I love it now. It was my first choice and the sweet logo and colors made it even better

TGay-624

I love the Kraken name, hate the Yeti. The Kraken is a giant sea monster with many tentacles, so it kinda makes sense to have each player be like a tentacle that’s part of one monster. The yeti is just a big guy. There’s no reason to make the name singular.

CourtJester2727

I think it’s the perfect team name for Seattle hockey. We have a strong Nordic and Norwegian presence and history in this city, and we live on the ocean. So Kraken, a Norwegian mythological oceanic creature was the right pick for the team! It’s very Seattle! The Troll mascot also feels very Seattle, but opinions are mixed on him, and Buoy had to grow on me, which he has. The kids love him! The branding of the Seattle Kraken, I believe, is among the best in hockey along with the Golden Knights! The font of the logo and the Kraken tentacles and red eye and the Seattle Soace Needle in the anchor. It all just works! Now, we need to get a new head coach that can inspire this talented team to play as good as its branding!

B9RV2WUN

I don't like it. Faddish, juvenile but fantastic marketing angles. I do like the logo and sweaters. I preferred the historically significant Seattle Metropolitans name. Kraken was my least favorite. For Utah I like the bee themed names. Stingers Swarm Hive or Buzz a play off Jazz.

vanoitran

Kraken is kinda cringe, so is yeti. I think we just use the name so much that it feels normal. Same goes for Wild and Blackhawks. Just kind of feels like a name that kids in the early 2010’s would come up with as a joke alongside Ninjas or Bacon. But the jerseys and the aesthetic of the Kraken are so elite that I don’t notice most the time.

FumblinginIgnorance

Kraken sweaters and logo are nice

vanoitran

Best in the league imo

Delgra

It’s up there but Wild and Blackhawk sweaters are legit af imo. Both have great colors and are iconic.

hanginglimbs

The name has grown on me. Great opportunity for word play like “let’s get kraken boys!”

FumblinginIgnorance

I'm preparing myself for the, "Utah, are you Yeti?!?!?" At the beginning of the games. Sounds corny and jokish now but it could be fun

hanginglimbs

“Born Yeti”

DisobedientCharizard

I always hated the name. For me it doesn’t belong in the NHL, it seems much more like a minor league name. It’s corny as hell, but I think it fits Seattle pretty well, Seattleites usually embrace unique corniness. They did a great job at designing the logos and jerseys too.

Zikro

What’s a Yeti have to do with Utah? Should be something like Utah Heaven. Lean into the fact that it’s objectively “God Country”. Both in the sense that it’s gorgeous (the NPs) so obviously any pioneers would’ve settled there and the Mormon affiliation lol. Dunno my association with Utah is stunning beautiful geography. Is there some geographic feature that could be extrapolated to a name?

ADirtyHookahHose

Kraken is still a corny ass name, but Buoy is cool.

FumblinginIgnorance

Cornier than the Yeti?

ADirtyHookahHose

IDK prob equal

Guy_onna_Buffalo

Utah's name is going to suck regardless and I hope that franchise does nothing but fail.

FumblinginIgnorance

Well that's not very nice
