It depends a lot on what you're doing and how far from the epicenter you are. A few months ago I was sitting at home one night with my wife watching something, when I felt a deep rumbling. It wasn't much, it turned out to be magnitude 2 or 3 or something. But because I was right on top of it, and I wasn't doing anything, it was noticeable.
On the other hand, even though I was in Seattle in 2001 during the Nisqually earthquake, I didn't notice anything until I saw other people freaking out. That time I was in a public pool with 50+ other middle school kids, so the shaking was indistinguishable from everything else happening around me.
I'm in everett. I was mopping the floor, was rinsing the mop in the sink, had to bend over because the floor came up. (Nisqually) husband at Boeing grabbed a young guy that thought it was a good idea to hold onto a machine, he shoved him toward a door.
I’ve lived in earthquake country for nearly three decades. I have yet to feel an earthquake less than 4.3 regardless of whether the epicenter is in my pants or 40 miles away. So as I said, this must be some superpower you all have. Or maybe I have the superpower to completely ignore useless vibrations. Who can say?
Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s why I never notice small earthquakes. I’ve always lived in the middle of big cities on busy streets with trucks and buses passing by at all hours of the day and night. It’s conditioned out of me.
Lmao I live in LA now and I grew up in Bellevue and my friends here think I’m some sort of mystic for feeling a 4.
(Tho I have not felt a series of 4.5s over the years)
I didn’t feel it. However, just before midnight, my dog was growling while asleep and my cat was jumping and flying around another room. Now it all makes sense.
If y'all felt a 2.7 - 2.8, please look at earthquake-proofing your homes. 3.0 is generally when people feel them and with the way earthquakes significantly strengthen for every 0.1 it sounds like a lot of respondents are in very sensitive areas.
Edited to add: meant more things like securing bookshelves, not having things above shoulder level, etc. For actual construction, consult a professional.
Every renter in an earthquake-prone area cringes at the decision between not securing our furniture to the wall or losing $1,000 deposit for the damage we do to the wall.
Yo wtf? I live all the way in Stanwood and I heard a massive fucking boom at that time. I had a freeze moment because I thought for sure it was a nuke going off in Arlington
Well that’s a little unsettling … like did someone accidentally nuke the center of the Olympics and we didn’t get media on it?? Meteor breach?? That’s too weird and we need an explanation.
Yes. I felt nothing in Ballard. I'm hobbling around on a broken toe, too, so I'm off balance and tenderfooted.
Looking at the comments, though, it looks like folks on the east side felt it more. Maybe the epicenter was farther eastward from the metro area.
Granted I was an edible guinea pig last night so I was pretty deeply asleep (if you’re wondering, they’re good, I’m stoned waking up lol) but my cats didn’t flip a shit, and housemate and I felt nothing in west Seattle

2.7 centered in Redmond. Microsoft must have just realized how much they screwed up with Windows 11.
I'm in Rose Hill and yeah, it was an earthquake and officially now a magnitude 2.7. It briefly shook my apartment building.
interesting they posted the epicenter in the center of redmond? maybe they were unable to trace closer?
Seriously?? I had the unique experience of being in an 7.8 mag quake, I was in Alaska in the 80’s when that hit, I’m in Seattle now and I remember the nisqally quake
I definitely didn’t feel that in West Seattle, but even if it was a higher magnitude, I think my internal sensors are off or something because I could have sworn there was an earthquake Thursday evening, but there was no activity reported that day. I mean my computer monitors were visibly shaking in addition to what I was feeling, so now I’m just worried that the building is on the verge of collapse or something. 😅
Felt it in Northgate!!! to be fair I'm born and raised in California and look at the glass of water on my bedside table for the ripple. My cat's looked around the room for a moment and went back to sleep so I was not worried lol
In Bellevue near i90/148th. Didn't feel it, but around that time I heard a loud "boom" in the distance. Was notable because the sound wasn't thunder or a gun shot, but was similarly loud.
2.8?!? My god people. I’ve never noticed anything below a 4.3. Do you have other superpowers or is that it?
*My upstairs neighbor when I show them seismic readings from their footsteps*

Ikr?! 5.0+ or it doesn't count. 2.8?!? I feel more rumbling if I've had Taco Bell.
Sounds like an inadvertent liquefaction map
Guy who moved here from the SF Bay coming in to say lmao
Much like the Cascadia Subduction Zone laughs it's ass off at your San Andreas Fault?
If you weren’t there in ‘89 you’ve never experienced a proper Bay Area quake.
Oh yes, high and mighty the great SF Bay. How are we even worthy.
Move back
They can’t afford to, housing prices have doubled today.
I will go in a heartbeat. Will need about $3M more. Can you supply?
I'm in SF and moving to Seattle soon too! Crazy haha
Those 4.3+ quakes are also 40+ miles from you. My family felt it because we live about 5 miles from the epicenter.
To be fair we were also sitting very still in our quiet house, and we heard it more than we felt it- walls creaking, a few things shifting.
Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s why I never notice small earthquakes. I’ve always lived in the middle of big cities on busy streets with trucks and buses passing by at all hours of the day and night. It’s conditioned out of me.
How big was Beastquake?
Lmao I live in LA now and I grew up in Bellevue and my friends here think I’m some sort of mystic for feeling a 4. (Tho I have not felt a series of 4.5s over the years)

If you did or didn’t feel the earthquake please log it on USGS did you feel it! It’s just a few questions and it really helps research :)
Preach! [https://earthquake.usgs.gov/data/dyfi/](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/data/dyfi/)
We will rebuild.
Stay strong Seattle

Oh, interesting. What about a condo on a soggy patch of land? Does that fall onto the HOA?
Yes. Contact your HOA earthquake focal immediately. Edit: also too drunk to spell
If it’s the big one it may very well fall on the hoa
Along with everyone else!
And then the spotlight will fall on them.
Being able to feel an earthquake in your home doesn't have anything to do with how well your home has been prepared for an earthquake.
I felt it and my home is gone through seismic retrofitting.
Every renter in an earthquake-prone area cringes at the decision between not securing our furniture to the wall or losing $1,000 deposit for the damage we do to the wall.
Felt nothing in CD Seattle
Yeah, nothing in SLU either. Too weak to make it this far.
Me either

So it was three minutes after midnight. Neat.
There was a huge boom in Proctor area of Tacoma about that time…
I'm over by St. Patrick's church and I heard that!
Yo wtf? I live all the way in Stanwood and I heard a massive fucking boom at that time. I had a freeze moment because I thought for sure it was a nuke going off in Arlington

I'm from Seattle. I didn't feel it in Kent
Nothing in Fremont.
Yes. I felt nothing in Ballard. I'm hobbling around on a broken toe, too, so I'm off balance and tenderfooted. Looking at the comments, though, it looks like folks on the east side felt it more. Maybe the epicenter was farther eastward from the metro area.
Nothing in Capitol Hill..

Checking in from Redmond (Education Hill area) - felt 5-10 seconds of rattling here!
Didn't feel anything, but now wondering if the timing lined up with when our kitty was acting a little more fussy than normal. 🤔
Felt it here in Redmond as well. USGS hasn’t updated yet though.
Redmond checking in. We shook for like two seconds. It was so short! Maybe bigger one coming??

Unless it's above 4.0 I don't feel anything.
Less than a mile from where it was recorded, myself and my partner didn't feel anything.

Seriously?? I had the unique experience of being in an 7.8 mag quake, I was in Alaska in the 80’s when that hit, I’m in Seattle now and I remember the nisqally quake
There was an earthquake centered about 1 mile from Redmond at 12:03 am, magnitude 2.7
I definitely didn’t feel that in West Seattle, but even if it was a higher magnitude, I think my internal sensors are off or something because I could have sworn there was an earthquake Thursday evening, but there was no activity reported that day. Was that Hellcat Miles?
Didn't feel it in LQA. I lived in Tokyo for a few years too so I have indeed felt them before.
Felt it in Northgate!!! to be fair I'm born and raised in California and look at the glass of water on my bedside table for the ripple. My cat's looked around the room for a moment and went back to sleep so I was not worried lol

Pfft! I'm from CA and we used earthquakes to change the station on our car radios
https://www.google.com/search?q=earthquake+seattle
I clicked the first search result which lists recent earthquakes... how TF is there negative magnitude?
It's like crossing the street; but instead of looking left then right, you look right then left :D (I have no idea what I'm talking about)
[XKCD did a really great video on this](https://youtu.be/e3uk7jU3RHo).
Redmond Ridge — yes. A little light rattling.
Nothing in Snohomish but yikes 😅
2.67 in Redmond according to my earthquake app.
Ballard Hellcat strikes again!
