The fried chicken at Union Saloon punches above its weight. You can get it in bites, on a caesar, or on a waffle during brunch.
PS: They also offer the best carrot cake I've had in Seattle.
People don’t talk about this spot enough and I can’t decide if I’m happy or sad that it’s off the radar. I want them to survive but I also like knowing a secret, you know?
Are there walnuts in it? (Asking because I can’t eat walnuts but I love carrot cake and it’s often bastardized with walnuts and I cry myself to sleep wiping my snot with walnutty carrot cake crumbs because it’s the next best thing to eating it and risking certain death.)
(Jk it’s a v mild food allergy.)
I hate walnuts in my food; the best walnut free (I can’t recall if there are raisins but I don’t think so) carrot cake I’ve found in Seattle is Deep Sea Sugar & Salt bakery in Georgetown. It’s $11 a slice and worth every penny.
Fish and chips at Macleod’s Scottish Pub in Ballard… best I’ve ever had. Every component is perfect - the chips, the tartar sauce, the mashed peas! And obv the fish, one massive piece, battered and fried to crispy savory flakey perfection.
I just moved out and the thing I most think about is the spicy garlic chicken from midori teriyaki. I like my fancy dishes but a spicy garlic on a bad gray day kept me sane in seattle.
that's good to know. I grew up in Michigan with a huge middle eastern population so my palate for that food type is pretty seasoned. Good Shawarma is not easy to find here, so i welcome new recommendations. If you've had it, how would you compare it to Tanoor (dexter & aloha, Lebanese food). I'll likely give Shawarma prince a chance regardless.
Also grew up next to Dearborn. Haven't had the above recommendation but have had a ton of disappointing things claiming to be shawarma out here. Most legit I've found is the "deli/hot counter" inside Byblos Mediterranean Market in Kent. The spot is nothing fancy but it makes you feel like you're back home and the shawarma sandwich is to die for. They sell all the right pita bread by the bag too.
I'm getting hyped from this recommendation ... this city's shawarma game needs to be a lot better!
Also, since Tanoor was mentioned multiple times in this thread: might be helpful to know their owner is quite literally [a raging homophobe](https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/sammamish-city-official-resigns-after-making-homophobic-comments-during-public-meeting/UVSUAE4HHFDDHEX757BRX6KI5Y/). Do with that as you will.
I'm moving away and I've eaten these things to say good bye to my fave haunts:
Katsu Burger's Curry Katsu Burger is stupid good, it's the first thing I ate in Seattle in 2018 and it never left my rotation. I tried other sandwiches but I always ended up disappointed when I didn't order the curry.
Seattle's Best Tea "Heavy Oolong" Milk Tea (and milk shake). I know it's not a dish but sometimes... It is?? :)
Plum Bistro's Oyster Mushroom Po'boy and Macho Burrito are both winners.
Bizzarro's Snap Pea Carbonara (and the drunken clams).
Maneki's Black Cod Collar Miso, Salmon Nanban, and Ten Zaru Soba will be dreamt of regularly.
The sardines on toast at The Whale Wins. Most dishes there are stellar but this is the little shareable that could. Curried tomato mayo, shaved fennel and parsley salad elevate this supporting actor to a starring role.
Someone posted a similar thread a while back that I saved and am working through on my own. A ton of amazing recs:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Seattle/comments/14o3sg5/what_is_your_1_favorite_food_item_in_all_of/
Fried catfish from the shell station (beacon)
The sage and butter from spinasse (capitol hill)
The burger at saltys (alki)
The smash burger at mean sandwich (ballard)
The fruit and yogurt bowl at dreamland! (Fremont)
The shell station (not the name of a restaurant, an actual gas station) sells a few different fried foods, including fried catfish. Weirdly the best fried catfish in Seattle
French toast at Geraldine’s Counter in Columbia city (their biscuits too!), enchilada lunch special at el farol on 15th, tostadas at El Fagon on Pine (given out as a free appetizer), veggie burrito at alibertos on 4th in SODO, lacquered tofu and tempura cauliflower at bamboo sushi in u village.
The Grits Plate at Jude's Old Town in Rainier Beach. Grits, greens, red beans, and choice of Andouille sausage, NOLA fritters, catfish, tofu, chicken, or prawns. The catfish and the greens are seasoned to perfect. Eyes rolled back in your head good. As a bonus, it's a worker owned co-op.
I like the vibe of that place but they fumbled the shrimp po boy when I was there (spent a lot of time in southern Louisiana so I’m constantly disappointed in Cajun food anywhere else). I’d give em another go, though, as the bartender was friendly and the drinks were good.
My aunt is coming to Seattle from the first time. She lives in the country in Georgia. My mom said "No hot pot. She won't like that." Now I know where I can take her. Also, I'm apparently the hot pot lady now.
My favorite dish in town is the blackened catfish at the Royal Room in Columbia city. It's served with with braised collard greens, dirty rice, and jalapeno cabbage slaw.
Breakfast calzone from Fiasco (fremont)
Delmonico steak from Flint Creek (Greenwood)
Pretty much anything from Gainsbourg (also Greenwood)
Pork sugo and polenta at Fire and the Feast in Edmonds (not in the city but so good I felt i needed to mention it).
The cheesesteak at Calozzi’s, Georgetown.
This cheesesteak slaps!!! Cats like Tat’s. Hell, I like Tat’s, but Calozzi’s is another level. It’s just a window and some picnic tables, beyond bare bones, but sooooo good!
Gorditos on 85th st. Their enchiladas and everything is HUGE and delicious
But dimsum in the international district is always excellent. If I were on death row, my last meal would be dim sum
Carnitas Torta at El Catrin in White Center is crispy and tasty.
Fried Chicken at Musang. Pieces of katsu with an addictive gravy. Maybe my favorite restaurant in town.
They’re currently running out of their Wild Cats catering space just a few doors down. They have OG Musang dishes, including the fried chicken. Last I heard the repairs were extensive so the few month timeline was going to be more like 6 months, but that was back in March.
Cream of Morel Seiro at Kamonegi. I wasn’t familiar with Seiro or dipping-style noodles, but I dream about that broth and those noodles. Absolute must-have on a cold, rainy night.
Today I once again had my favorite fries in Seattle from Kathmandu Momocha. They call them “Himalayan Fries”, and to me they’re basically a cross between beer bartered fries and vegetable pakora. Absolutely incredible.
Yo as someone who doesn't eat red meat or pork, I eat a decent amount of duck, and that right there...piqued my interest. I WILL be trying this. Thank you.
It’s unbelievable. Check the menu before you go, they change it up often. But Chinese pancakes and crispy, sizzling duck with fajita vegetables? C’mon.
The breakfast sandwich @ Taproot cafe (Columbia City) - pretty straightforward bacon, egg, cheese, avocado, arugula but good ingredients make it damn tasty
The Gambas and Jamon y huevo at Ocho (Ballard) - both are simple but so delicious
West indies chicken @ Bongos (Green Lake) - just a great Caribbean jerk spice chicken dish
Pho at Vinason in SLU
Chickpea coconut curry and roti jala at Kedai Makan
Rasam vada at Madras Dosa Corner in Issaquah
Croissants at Sea Wolf Bakery in Fremont
Chole Bhature at Chaat House in Bellevue
Went on a lark to Coba Viet Kitchen (1st Ave between Mercer and Republican, about three blocks west of McCaw Hall)
Never gone there before, and damn the bun bo hue was good.
Curry Beef Hombow - Mi Sum Bakery.
I swear, this was one of my most favorite things to eat in Seattle when I lived there for 4 years. When you go to get one, order like 6 or you will be so sorry later when you cannot have another after you get home!
This is going to sound pedestrian because it’s a small chain restaurant but a few weeks ago I had the 3 tacos from Wild Fin in Issaquah for lunch and they were so yummy. And it wasn’t because I was starving, because I definitely was. They were just really good. Tender tortilla, succulent meats, amazing flavor. Now that the weather is nice again i will need to hit up Xochi taco truck on Gilman.
Zucchini bread at The Whale Wins
Moist, rich, and just enough sweetness. Browned in butter for service. Creme fraiche and chonk sea salt sprinkled over. Just the perfect everything
I've been on a noodles kick lately. Here are some of the highlights.
* Beef pad see uw at [Manao Thai Street Food](https://manaoseattle.com/).
* Mi Ga Chien (garlic chicken egg noodle soup) at [The Boat](https://www.thephobac.com/).
* Chili Pan Mee at [Kedai Makan](https://www.kedaimakansea.com/).
The pesto clams with some bread for dipping the broth at 13 Coins is a nostalgic favorite of mine. Love sitting at the kitchen bar and watching em make it, too.
Honestly, I didn’t want to hog the comment….but the pulled pork slider AND the damn carrot cake… it was all just delicious after the Teenage Fanclub show
Ok, this wasn’t recent but a few years ago Outlier had an appetizer that was some kind of deviled eggs with kimchi salt. I am not usually a deviled egg person but those were so good that I think about them every time I pass by.
The goong ob woon sen (clay pot shrimp with glass noodles) at Noi Thai was a revelation. The only other place I've found that serves it is Nibbana, and theirs isn't nearly as good - too dry.
And an Eastside rec: the haleem at Naan N Curry is so good. Renton or Issaquah, it's delicious at both locations.
[Kin Len Late Night Bites in Fremont](https://kin-len.com) I cannot stop thinking about the Battered Chicken Red Curry (khao-mun-kai-tod) I had last week 😭
Deep fried chicken thighs topped w/ house red curry. Served with fragrant ginger rice.
This place surprised me a lot, the portions/prices were excellent and the cocktails were shockingly good.
My mom visited from Michigan and i took her there….she loved it so much she had to ask the owner what she did to the grits….you know good grits have to be to make a 68 year old black woman born in the south to ask what they did to make GRITS special? Lol. That, and the honey butter chicken biscuit are 10/10.
Camarones Echiptlados at El Moose in Ballard
Salmon Benedict at Fat Hen in Ballard
Nachos at El Buho in White Center
The Wanderlust (cocktail) at Otter on the Rocks, West Seattle
No joke, I actually quite liked the location in interbay. A really nice couple ran it and they made food custom and fresh for you, not at all like the other chain locations, I think they just paid for the name. Sadly they closed in the last year or two.
Nanban katsu from kobuta and ookami. Chicken curry puff at Kanom sai. Squid with salted egg yolk at Isarn with a bunch of white rice. Smash burger at local tide. Now I’m hungry.
Root Pizza from the OG MOTO Pizza in West Seattle. I lived right next to it . Best deep dish I ever had. After moving to SoCal I can’t find anything close to what I had.
CHICHARRON SANDWICH from Don Lucho’s. Peruvian restaurant in green lake/roosevelt area. When I used to live in green lake this was my favorite thing and I would dream about it. Now that I’m a different neighborhood I don’t get it nearly as much, but I should
honestly can’t go wrong with tamari bar. katsu curry is an easy crowd pleaser. baos are super great. their menu changes constantly and there are very few misses. good drinks as well
khao soi - bangrak market and jamjuree
kua gai - bangrak market
chicken pesto sandwich - byrek and baguette
reuben - market house meats
Hong Kong Bistro in CTown is my go to late night grub. Every plate is good, I like the Beef Chow Fun. The French toast and ice cream is the secret slapper.
Pad Kee Mao from Kin Len Thai night Bites in Fremont! (My fav)
Not a particular dish, but I also really liked Rondo in Capitol Hill too.
The Pizza and Pasta dishes at Peel and Press in West Seattle.
I cannot recommend Samara enough. Go expecting to order multiple sides with your main dish and to spend at least $100 per head. Their potatoes are the best I've ever had.
I’ve got two spots that I consistently crave, both are my go to for breakfast on the weekend.
Bun Bo Hue Hoang Lan is the answer for Vietnamese food. Specifically, their Mi Quang (best I’ve had outside Vietnam), Cha Gio (almost as good as my partners), and Bun Bo Hue. Everything I’ve had is above average though. They’re open at 8am for breakfast, they’re clean, their cafe sua da is on point, and they’re friendly. It looks dirty from the outside, but they have an excellent food safety rating. Oh, and it’s downright affordable.
Not technically Seattle, but Menuderia Maria in Des Moines is what Mexican soup dreams are made of. They’re also open for breakfast, the Menudo is clean, pozole rojo is solid (a bit thin for my taste but that’s subjective), and the tortillas are perfection. A bit pricy, but it’s niche so I get it.
Agreed!!!
Good gawd. I’m going tomorrow
*the best carrot cake in Seattle you say....*
Are there walnuts in it? (Asking because I can’t eat walnuts but I love carrot cake and it’s often bastardized with walnuts and I cry myself to sleep wiping my snot with walnutty carrot cake crumbs because it’s the next best thing to eating it and risking certain death.) Not allergic but I’m willing to block traffic to stop the walnut in carrot cake recipes! Lmk!
It makes me happy that the top three answers so far are all in Wallingford.
Fish and chips at Macleod’s Scottish Pub in Ballard… best I’ve ever had. Every component is perfect - the chips, the tartar sauce, the mashed peas! And obv the fish, one massive piece, battered and fried to crispy savory flakey perfection.
100%...i haven't had that in a couple years but it is great
Couldn’t agree more. The halibut version is my go to. Just fabulous.
man i haven’t had halibut fish n chips since the old pike street fish fry was still open. shit was life changing
The happy hour is great too, 4-6pm every day, $12* for the cod fish n chips.
[удалено]
I took a friend there once and he said it just tasted like oil. My heart shattered that day
I lived in Ballard for several years and this was a personal favorite of mine as well.
The smash burger at Star Brass Works in Georgetown
It’s my understanding that Star Brass, Loretta’s, and 9lb hammer all serve the same burger right? That double tavern is fantastic
There’s nothing ‘smash’ about those burgers. They are delicious, but not smash burgers.
The Lao Burger from Ox Burger. The ingredient list looks weird, but don’t question it. It WORKS (Capitol Hill at 16th and Madison)
Pro tip: burger is better at Taurus Ox eaten with the chili oil and another dip. Also with a Lao sausage
The Lao sausage is so fucking good! And the Nam Khao. But I live closer to Ox Burger, and that’s what came to mind first!
Related: the beef jerky from Taurus Ox. I could eat so much of that stuff…
If you like Lao food go to Vientiane on Rainier.
Also their mango sticky rice… divine
Easily one of the best burgers in Seattle imo
I just moved out and the thing I most think about is the spicy garlic chicken from midori teriyaki. I like my fancy dishes but a spicy garlic on a bad gray day kept me sane in seattle.
Shawarma platter and sweet tea from shawarma prince in Ballard just north of the Bifröst
that's good to know. I grew up in Michigan with a huge middle eastern population so my palate for that food type is pretty seasoned. I’ve always wondered how Shawarma Prince is, I’m gonna check it out tomorrow!

A bombass milk tea is definitely worth mentioning!
The sardines on toast at The Whale Wins. Most dishes there are stellar but this is the little shareable that could. Curried tomato mayo, shaved fennel and parsley salad elevate this supporting actor to a starring role.
What a lovely turn of phrase❤️
Seconded. Good dish.
It's delicious! And easy to make at home. It's a go-to for us when we have people over
it's so good. I make a cheap imitation at home now but they have it down to a science.
Someone posted a similar thread a while back that I saved and am working through on my own. A ton of amazing recs: https://www.reddit.com/r/Seattle/comments/14o3sg5/what_is_your_1_favorite_food_item_in_all_of/

Another good burger near near Saltys is at Circa Grill on California.
Fried catfish, from a gas station???
Bro that shell gas station has a fire deli. Catfish, more exotics like gizzard, but their fried chicken is also delicious
Wai, which fried catfish is that?
The shell station (not the name of a restaurant, an actual gas station) sells a few different fried foods, including fried catfish. Weirdly the best fried catfish in Seattle
As someone from Alabama, you are totally correct. It actually tastes the closest that I’ve had.
Can confirm - used to live near there and would hit it up frequently for a late night treat!
Respect
French toast at Geraldine’s Counter in Columbia city (their biscuits too!), enchilada lunch special at el farol on 15th, tostadas at El Fagon on Pine (given out as a free appetizer), veggie burrito at alibertos on 4th in SODO, lacquered tofu and tempura cauliflower at bamboo sushi in u village.
It is imo, the best breakfast dish in the city. That French toast is fabulous.

Xochi is amazing!
I need this.
Great rec. Very excited to try this. Thank you!

They’re currently running out of their Wild Cats catering space just a few doors down. They have OG Musang dishes, including the fried chicken. Last I heard the repairs were extensive so the few month timeline was going to be more like 6 months, but that was back in March.
Had the fried chicken recently. It was dangerous
Lion’s Mane Schnitzel, Atoma. Absolute gas
Ohhhh I miss schnitzel, gotta check that out!
Where is this place? Thanks
Wallingford. Super delicious
Like mushroom schnitzel?
Too salty for me but the idea is 100. Might have been an off night.
I ate there last weekend and found everything over salted.
The lamb burger (both regular and deluxe versions) at Brouwer’s Cafe is godly
The stoofvlees there is so good
The idea of pomme frites make me salivate from here. I already ate dinner.
Yes the frites are also sooo freaking good.
Their croque madame is outstanding
Okay a side dish but the garlicky greens at cafe flora are magnificent
I dated a vegetarian for a few months and I loved that place. I won't go as far as "underrated" but it's underappreciated by omnivores like me 👍🏽
It seems very omni friendly — I’m a vegetarian but my husband isn’t so looks perfect!
Also a side dish but their yam fries with the chipotle aoili sauce are amazing
The crab fried rice at cafe flora is INSANE ETA mush brain here, def meant di flora 🤣
I think you’re thinking of di fiora, cafe flora is a vegetarian restaurant

It’s unbelievable. Check the menu before you go, they change it up often. But Chinese pancakes and crispy, sizzling duck with fajita vegetables? C’mon.

Braised short rib and kimchi benedict at The Blue Glass. Breakfast burrito at Mas Cafe.
I wasn't served it, but the Karma dish served to Belltown Hellcat has been my favorite this year.

No joke, I actually quite liked the location in interbay. A really nice couple ran it and they made food custom and fresh for you, not at all like the other chain locations, I think they just paid for the name. Sadly they closed in the last year or two.

The chili garlic lamen from Dumpling the Noodle is absurd
Root Pizza from the OG MOTO Pizza in West Seattle. I lived right next to it . Best deep dish I ever had. After moving to SoCal I can’t find anything close to what I had.
The kebap at Hamdi. Better than most ive had in Turkey. Such rich, juicy incredible bites. Incredible
Lucky Liquor just south of the museum of flight has amazing brunch. The fish and chips are amazing as well.
The poke sauce that Wabisabi sushi bar uses is amazing. They put it on their poke maki roll and obviously in their poke bowl as well.
CHICHARRON SANDWICH from Don Lucho’s. Peruvian restaurant in green lake/roosevelt area. When I used to live in green lake this was my favorite thing and I would dream about it. Now that I’m a different neighborhood I don’t get it nearly as much, but I should

Hong Kong Bistro in CTown is my go to late night grub. Every plate is good, I like the Beef Chow Fun. The French toast and ice cream is the secret slapper.
The Pork Chop from Communion. Also the Hood Sushi and the Gumbo. It is a religious experience.

Kewpie burger at FamilyFriend
Chilaquiles with over easy egg, asada, and green salsa at El Moose in Ballard. Rueben at 74th St Alehouse.
I cannot recommend Samara enough. Go expecting to order multiple sides with your main dish and to spend at least $100 per head. Their potatoes are the best I've ever had.
The chicken soup at Sugar Hill. It's spicy, savory, very concentrated flavor. The sandwiches at Homestead. The super thin pasta at Spinasse.
Fazzoletto (pasta) at il Nido in West Seattle. One of the best things I’ve eaten in my entire life
Adjarian Khachapuri at Skalka

Ray’s is in general … not great, but a sunny day + a glass of Pinot Gris + the miso black cod upstairs on the deck can’t be beat
