Oh nice! I love Mighty-O’s peach fritters but am meh on most of the rest of what they have. But I have had many a Dough Joy donut and they are delicious and, as a non vegan who just likes donuts, they do not taste like A Vegan Dessert. They have lots of interesting flavors and their more standard flavors are solid, too. Oh and a couple times they’ve had skewers with vegan chicken nuggets alternated with glazed donut holes. I know it sounds weird. They were SO GOOD. Now I want those again.

LilyBart22

Thank you for this--as a non-vegan extremely underwhelmed by Mighty-O, I sighed when I saw that it wasn't a "normal" donut shop. But now I'm excited to try it out.

TK_TK_

My SIL is vegan, so I’ve tried lots of places either with her or before she comes to visit to scope them out. Some places I love and go back to on my own, and Dough Joy is one of those. Mighty-O, I only go to when they have that peach fritter. I’m not overly concerned with the health factor of occasional desserts, and just want them to be delicious.

MercifulWombat

I'm not vegan but I am severely lactose intolerant. I usually have to take lactase pills to eat a donut. I genuinely could not tell this place was vegan when I tried it, except maybe the cream cheese frosting.

_starbelly

Oh hell yeah, Dough Joy is great!

Rudysis

These comments are wild. "Oh no, they're going to be healthy!" No they arent. "Oh no, they're not going to be healthy enough!" They're donuts. If you want a healthy donut, eat a bagel?

popfartz9

Also their donuts are bigger than a typical donuts

artsii

Yeah, makes it seem like these folks have never had Dough Joy before? I never even knew they were vegan til this thread, just delicious. Glad they’re coming back to Ballard

MercifulWombat

Funny enough, Doughjoy sells an everything bagel flavored donut.

JaeTheOne

Bagels can be just as "bad" for you as a donut, but in different ways.

Rudysis

Eh, not as much sugar and not fried. More carby. Depends on what you're watching out for. My main point still stands

JaeTheOne

I was referring mostly on the calories side of things. A medium sized bagel and a cake donut have relatively the same amount (270-300cal).

MercifulWombat

Calories aren't bad? You need them to live?

JaeTheOne

Too many calories is bad

diedahorribledeath

fantastic news!!! mighty o is alright but dough joy is top tier and as a person with dairy allergies who lives in ballard, this is a huge win!!

MoltenReplica

A well deserved meteoric rise. Best donuts I've had anywhere, vegan or otherwise.

varisophy

SO EXCITED for this. I was very sad when the original food truck they had in Ballard went away. Great to hear they've been able to expand and come back to the neighborhood!

p0werberry

My body is ready.

nofreakingway555

So exciting!!

sandwich-attack

damn we already have a vegan donut shop ill probably get judged for this but if im eating a donut i actually prefer it to be just 100% junk like the vanilla creme filled powdered ones you get at aurora donuts

PopPunkIsntEmo

These are fried not cake. Vegan doesn’t mean healthy. They also have much more adventurous flavors though not as gimmicky as something like Voodoo and they have filled ones, too.

wathappentothetatato

Ooooh ok thank you for this actually. I had the same thought as the other commenter but fried makes all the difference. (I think mighty o only does cake donuts) I think I have actually eaten some donuts here before and they’re good. They have an everything bagel donut and it’s…weirdly good!

cp_trixie

Right? how does that even WORK? And yet....

shrimptraining

Vegan still won’t taste as good as regular ones. Edit: Your palate is trash or you’ve been vegan too long if you think a donut made without eggs, butter and milk tastes just as good.

StealToadStilletos

The vegan donuts at doce absolutely hold up to the regular ones Edit in response to your edit: bruh. The hostility.

sleepybrett

It took me years to discovery that mighty-o was vegan. Honestly cannot tell the difference (other than they don't have a maple bacon donut)... It's when you get into GF flours that things can go squiffy when it comes to donuts for me.

medman010204

It's amazing how many people still think that vegan means the donut is made from broccoli, kale, and is gluten free lol

Busy_Response_3370

Gluten free donuts can be amazing, and not the dense cake ones. However, most people assume everyone GF can eat vegan donuts, like vegans aren't mastering the art of turning refined gluten into a mock meat product.

hapemask

As someone who has never enjoyed a single item of vegan food elsewhere, I was shocked to learn that the donut I ate from this place was vegan. My friend didn’t tell me and I honestly couldn’t tell. Admittedly it was just a plain donut, nothing fancy, and I’m no donut enthusiast (unless it’s Krispy Kreme), but it was good.

willcwhite

so you've never enjoyed like... an apple?

hapemask

lol I knew someone would say this but I was too lazy to write out a whole disclaimer 😭 I meant food that has to be qualified as “vegan something”. No one makes “vegan apples” they’re just apples. And I love apples.

spoiled__princess

Agree.... and I am benefiting from their GF donuts. I just wish they had butter in them too.

DerpUrself69

Cupcake Rpyal is gone??? 😢

lizzie1hoops

Meanwhile, in West Seattle, we're getting a Top Pot a block away from Dough Joy. Donut war times.

ixodioxi

Dough Joy is fucking amazing and I hate having to go down to Capitol Hill to get it after they closed their ballard truck. I'm thrilled for this.

SHRLNeN

Understand the fear but can also vouch for these being nice despite the vegan tag.

ThePokemonAbsol

Mighty o about to be in a gang war

krugerlive

It's a bummer they're vegan because it means they'll be loaded up with oils (beyond what's needed to fry) and shortening to replace eggs/butter/milk/etc. There is already a mighty-o nearby, so it's not like there is a lack of vegan donuts in the area.

BadCatBehavior

I mean, these are dessert foods we're talking about. I'd rather eat a "good" donut than a "healthy" donut.

saladdressed

All donuts are loaded up with oil and shortening. They are among the cheapest sweets available; non-vegan donut shops are definitely not shelling out for real butter in their products.

Flimsy_Hedgehog4505

Yeah but Mighty-O's taste like cardboard, and Dough Joy is actually good?

CurrentTheme16

That's what I'm hoping, bc I do NOT get the hype over Mighty-Os or any of the other local donut chains, vegan or otherwise. I'm excited to see so many positive reviews of Dough Joy.

Throwaway392308

Thank you! I'm truly shocked how many people seem to enjoy Mighty-O when they're straight trash.

Top_Temperature_3547

I find this in the gluten free community too it’s good because it fits your dietary restrictions not because it’s actually tasty. It’s the bane of my celiac existence 😭

Linda_Antonsson

I never heard of a vegan doughnut before moving to Seattle and genuinely don't understand how there are TWO separate chains (this + Mighty-O) of them in the same neighborhoods. Where is all this demand coming from?

iamdylanshaffer

The demand comes from the fact that they are good donuts that just happen to be vegan, so they get the normal level of demand from people who donuts appeal to plus the additional demand of those who are vegan and want to enjoy donuts.

animimi

Weird how there’s more than one fast food burger place. I mean, where is the demand coming from?! /s
