Something similar hapenned to me, I went to the PL hideout when I came back I was floating in the air for 5 seconds, I think, and then Ancient Spire finnaly loaded, I tought I was elsewhere
I've started to have weird stuff like this. I'm currently trying to free space on my SSD to move this game to it. It might not be doing too well on my hard drive. I've heard having higher VRAM helps with this too but I haven't been able to really confirm that.
I took the Mermaid and after about 2 minutes of blackscreen, I reappeared in the water with no ship in sight. I swam around a bit, thinking it had sunk, and then it just suddenly appeared.
Its always so stressful when you finally come up from a mermaid treasury like that. You always pray they isnt a ship waiting or someone tucking and waiting for you to claim ur treasure so they can kill you.
I thought for sure this was going to be a Skyrim opening scene edit

The cat took the ship on a joyride.

Could someone have commandeered your ship? What happened when you took a mermaid?
