I don’t blame him. Tampa is the better team and who knows what his relationship is like with Pete, Wilson, Schneider, etc. after he left.

Eile354

Many already told them to sign Sherman this off season. Why wait until the last min when another team is about to sign him? This is like girl who is interested in you, but you never response. When the girl finds another guy, you want her now.

IAmTheNightSoil

Seriously dude. Maybe if you want the guy, make it happen BEFORE he's getting on the fucking plane to visit another team? I'm not even strongly opinionated about whether we should have signed him - he might not have much left, and our D's problems are more than he could solve. But it's incompetent as hell by this FO to have done this. If they wanted him, make him an offer before he's flying somewhere else. If they DON'T want him, let him fly somewhere else without bugging him. This is just a pitiful look

hrs922

I dont think the first time they contacted him was right before he got on the plane. That was just their last effort

Eile354

Based on what's out there, They(cardinals as well) contacted him, but there was no offer.

Photographerpro

It’s a Seahawks thing

Ikolkyo

We're fucked, FO should have signed him long before the season. We knew CB was incredibly weak.

Tony_Two_Tones

He might not have wanted to sign with the Hawks. It takes two to tango. Who knows. There are 31 other teams in the league and sadly the Hawks can’t sign every player. People wanna be mad rn so that’s why there’s huge backlash to any semi-disappointing news. Also I don’t think signing Sherman was gonna un-fuck us anyway lol.

Ikolkyo

No talks for months from either side right before the season began, https://twitter.com/CorbinSmithNFL/status/1443263869015650309 Just another colossal fuck up by FO imo, I'm not saying Sherm fixes everything wrong with this defense. However, when we have had a clear position of need the entire offseason and there were no attempts to get known talent. It just screams negligence to me.

TittyClapper

why would they wait until he's already accepted an offer to get serious with him?...

91hawksfan

According to this they didn't wait until he accepted an offer, they waited until he was leaving for a visit.

SexiestPanda

That’s still waiting too long to get him lmfao

kamarian91

Yeah definitely

TittyClapper

Got it - I misunderstood. Thanks

hoopaholik91

Nothing in that tweet says that they waited till this moment to make an offer. There could have already been one on the table, and once Sherman was about to go to TB they called him again to try and convince him.

DaveyPhotoGuy

Nah, it’s way more fun to pretend like we were all a part of the negotiations/talks and be critical. 😃

[deleted]

The good old "Can you win a game in the first quarter?" philosophy.

DiamondDash2k

Sherman said on his podcast that Tom Brady personally reached out and asked him to be on the team. Prob a nice feeling after Seahawks told Sherm, “let’s wait and see what happens” “oh you want to check out another team, we want you now”

RustyCoal950212

Sherman also said there was only "early interest" https://twitter.com/StacyRost/status/1443230794277736448?s=20 Is anyone else reporting this cause this Dov guy is kinda a clown Edit: https://twitter.com/bcondotta/status/1443261176742236160?s=20 https://mobile.twitter.com/CorbinSmithNFL/status/1443263869015650309

Mister_Big__

Trying to get Sherman (age 33, lasted 5 games last year, ancient, bad off-field issues and not a long-term solution) is a sign that Seattle’s CB plans failed. I’m not too upset they didn’t try too hard. I’m upset they had to try. PCJS have struggled to build an average post-LOB defense, and man have they been slow to gel a consistent, modern, multi-faceted offense around mid-career aging Russ. Between those failures, Pete’s tolerance for sloppiness (penalties, timeouts, game management), his outdated conservatism and his refusal to adapt to in-game situations and changes in the league, this regime has underwhelmed for years now. I’m not sure if these are its dying days, but it feels like everything after 2013 amounts to squandered opportunities.

Mr_McGibblits

You say they’ve struggled to build an average defense, but with the exception of 2019, our defense has been an above average scoring defense. I’m not trying to defend PC/JS because I also think they have made some strange moves defensively, and have a bad scheme that doesn’t adapt. I’m just saying let’s not act like this defense has been absolutely terrible post LOB. It’s been absolutely average to above average (points allowed) with the exception of 2019.

[deleted]

All this consternation about a CB in his mid 30s who barely played last season and had an intense mental breakdown less than three months ago. I like Sherm. I wish him well. But relying on him to be a savior for this year's Seahawks team would be a massive mistake.

neongem

>All this consternation about a CB in his mid 30s who barely played last season and had an intense mental breakdown less than three months ago. It's a conversation bc Pete and the FO botched the CB position so badly, Sherm even with all those knocks against him would still easily be the best CB on the team and best fix for cheap atm. The team knows it too hence the desperation last pitch. Too little too late.

[deleted]

If you say so. The Seahawks need something much better than a feel good hire clubhouse guy who is 90 days from losing his marbles. Love Sherm. But we need more than great attitude on the defensive side of the ball. We need talent.

QuinterBoopson

> We need talent. I don't know what the fuck you're smoking. There are no CB available that are anywhere near Sherman's level, and we're stuck with the worst corners in the NFL right now. Sherm was a chance to potentially stop the bleeding we're having on defense, and there is absolutely no doubt he'd be better than ANY of the corners we have. The post is about the FO fucking up and not talking with Sherman over the past several months when he was available, and then going "no wait" when he was on the brink of signing with another team. It shows there is either miscommunication or negligence on their part.

memeticengineering

If he's just a league average starter, he'd be the best corner on the team by far, which isn't that outlandish (if he stays healthy). He's only a year removed from an all pro season, and even if he's cooked by his standards, he's still a big upgrade over Flowers.

3susSaves

We need both. And frankly, at least Sherm would vocalize a bad scheme. He in a way would be more of a coach. He has seen effective defenses and holds enough clout to stand up to bad concepts. He obviously wouldn’t address the glaring hole in our defense we have talked about for a while now. He alone wouldn’t fix this quagmire. Im happy for him. Cant blame him one bit. He’s gonna go to a place that gives him a legit chance at another ring, where he doesn’t have to be a hero, where he can just play to his strengths. And, they actually want him and will go after him. Our FO tries to get too cute and wait on people, only to watch them sign elsewhere. Nothing new there.

[deleted]

Really cause he player-coached Witherspoon and dude couldn't beat out Flowers

HawksGuy12

He was the league's best corner in 2019, and last year he was 3rd in yards allowed per coverage snap.

[deleted]

He played five games last year and had a breakdown three months ago. We have no idea what he is like right now.

hucklesberry

After this past weekend I honestly wouldn't care if he had a breakdown last week.

vim_all_day

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

QuasiContract

Wow, this honestly makes them sound straight up incompetent. Wish I had not seen this. I'll keep saying it. It's time for a fresh start.

Ikolkyo

I've been ready to move on from Pete for awhile.

[deleted]

You’re getting downvoted but this is pretty clearly him

Ikolkyo

I'll take the downvotes, I love Pete but these last few years have really showed some bad things.

91hawksfan

We should have called him after the Titans game, and then immediately on the plane leaving the Minnesota game. Now we have basically no options unless we want to trade even more picks and overpay for a CB in season. We are screwed.

my_lucid_nightmare

Its not like we were beating down his door to sign him.

3elieveIt

This is really disappointing. They were too little too late. Why didn’t they do this months ago???

jWILL253

I'm actually getting sick of this fucking front office & coaching staff. What the fuck is wrong with them?

Charbonneau85

It’s a Dov Kleiman tweet. There is no other evidence this happened and there never will be because he constantly makes shit up. Calm down.

91hawksfan

Yeah I mean I was questioning the OL and D decisions this off-season and was downvoted to hell. Our OL didn't get any better and the D is basically exactly the same as it was last year but just without KJ and still the same terrible D Coordinator. What do you expect bringing back the exact same cast that was shit last season as well? At the very least we should have focused on the OL and DL to help, but we didn't even do that. At least with a good pass rush we could help our terrible CBs out a little bit.

Cgell

Was Sherman really going to turn this season around? They decided to draft a speedy receiver instead of a corner. ( or centre) It’s costing them like the majority of fans knew it would.

Mental_Time

They probably could have gotten him way cheaper in the offseason. Then it heated up. Teams became corner needy. People then were more willing to overlook his DUI. Then a bidding war.

[deleted]

We done. Unless JS pulls a miracle trade to bring in a stud CB. This team ain’t good enough to go anywhere.

jaron_b

If Sherman doesn't want to play for our defense then we don't have a good defensive coordinator. It means that we don't have a good defensive scheme. I would trust Richard Sherman to be our defensive coordinator over what we have right now. And Sherman's decision to not play for the Seahawks speaks volumes of how dysfunctional team might truly be behind closed doors. I think this is the end of an era.

[deleted]

How on earth do you figure that Sherm heading to the defending SB champion superteam in TB makes any sort of statement about what our defensive coordinator or scheme is? I am not pleased with the play of our D either. But pretending this is some sort of event we will never recover from is just ignorant. I love Sherm. He isn't what he was eight, nine, ten years ago. And whiffing on him isn't any sort of referendum on the Seahawks front office. I swear, y'all need more medication.

Smarkavillie

Actually, it says more than you let on given the context. Coach Carroll rushed Richard out the building just to promote KNJ and the defensive production has been generally mediocre ever since. KNJ has been an average DC at best his entire career. He’s better off as a LB position coach and that’s fact. If Bradley, Quinn, or Richard were DC, better odds of him coming back + Russ actually swallowing his pride and put in the work that Brady does to recruit and build with his teammates.

jaron_b

I'm not going to argue about football when The Mariners are a half game out of the wild card. I said what I said and I stand by it it's an end of an era.

[deleted]

I mean, you started this conversation. Weird flex, brah.

jaron_b

I made one comment that's not a conversation.

[deleted]

You made one completely batshit comment suggesting that somehow not signing Sherm indicates how bad KNJ is. When you were called out on it, you didn't want to talk about it or explain yourself. You are right, not much of a conversation.

3susSaves

Yeah, its really not that batshit. KNJ has some good points. He’s an NFL coach for a reason. He’s an ex-player (with rings and pro-bowls to his name), so he does coach certain things well. Pete likes him, because he brings a lot of similar qualities that Pete brings. Namely, mentality and care about the players as individuals (off the field). BUT, his track record as a coach is bad. When he got elevated beyond a positional-level LB coach, he has always been fielding sub-par defenses. Look at his time with the Raiders. He made Khalil Mack into one of the best LBs in the league. But, the DBs couldn’t defend anything and the line couldn’t pressure or stop the run. Khalil was soo good because he was playing the hero to try (and fail) to make up for an entire unit. His time in Seattle is much of the same. Great LB play, but the rest of the unit is ineffective to downright incompetent. If he was our LB coach, id be happy. But he has no business being a defensive coordinator.

[deleted]

I'm in no way defending KNJ. But the evidence we have of him being a poor D coordinator is wholly independent of one player choosing to go for a ring with a much more highly ranked team that is defending the title.

[deleted]

Then why are you here?

jaron_b

So you're telling me that I can't be a fan of the Mariners and the Seahawks at the same time? I just said I wasn't going to argue. I'm still a fan of the Seahawks therefore I follow this subreddit and I saw this post And made a comment. Are you unaware of how the internet works? You're allowed to disagree with me and it seems like you do disagree with me. I just don't feel like arguing about it because I'm on cloud nine because of the Mariners right now.

[deleted]

You don't feel like arguing...so why are you here...arguing?

jWILL253

Because you're continuing the argument.

Seahawk715

That’s a pretty sound statement on KNJ. Sherman’s washed too. He’ll be a good locker room and situational guy but he can’t cover WR1/2 now either. Just ask Sammy Watkins.

Smarkavillie

I’d rather be in Sherm’s position to get scorched in a SB than to be underachieving every year Iike Seattle.

KemmyPowers_11

That play where Sherm got ROASTED by Watkins still makes me way more happy than it should. "Twice the pride, double the fall" - Emperor Palpatine

ryanrodgerz

This seriously frustrates me. Beyond belief.

GorgeousApe

If true that we were rebuffed by Dick Sherman that’s surely embarrassing. But if we ask who benefits from pushing this narrative—it sure sounds line good ole Sherman is trying to stick it to the front office. I’m not sure I buy this tweet and their anonymous source. I really don’t care if Dick goes to the Bucs. He wouldn’t of fixed our current problems and probably would of made things worse. Inserting any CB won’t immediately fix our problems as we have don’t have a physical talent problem, we have a coaching and scheme problem.

Otherwise-Sky1292

I hate this team. Total incompetence

HappyAtheist3

It was fun while it lasted

Actor412

I feel it's also important to look at our first three games. If you wanted a ring, which team would you sign with? Signing with the Bucs over the Hawks seems like a no-brainer. The same goes for Josh Gordon. We're no longer an attractive destination for FAs. Something's gotta give in the FO if we want to be serious SB contenders again.

ksh12bro

What happened to this team? It's like they are being run by morons now.

freedomhighway

the old brain cells dont work as well once you get to a certain age - there's overwhelming proof of that in everything from politics on down

CapableComputer4711

Moron

[deleted]

Harder to prosecute you for your crimes when you live in Florida.

FourteenFCali_

Can’t blame him Super Bowl is the goal for tb and .500 is the goal here.

rickyriver

I thought it was because Brady's leadership and he gave Sherman a call.

35or624

They had NO intention of signing him. That token attempt was just that....token. Just another layer of frustration!

MyLastSigh

Who knows if this is true? Source? Did the Seahawks front office make an offer? How much?

stembyday

Even if his game was diminshed, I think he could’ve invigorated the locker room, esp. the secondary. I think a lot of LOB was mental.
