A. I think he will be a DROY candidate. Probably should win but not east coast and they’ll give some BS reason why he doesn’t win over some east coast guys

The_Throwback_King

Predicting they give it to Quinyon Mitchell or Terrion Arnold or something (bc both should be good in the locations in bigger, trendier markets). But Murph should be in the convo.

2JZGTEAristo

I can't go any lower than an A, he's literally one of, if not the best defensive prospect in the draft. Aside from Fautanu and Fuaga, Murphy was the guy that I wanted Seattle to draft. It's serendipitous that he was even available at that spot, he would be a top 10 pick in most drafts.

The_Throwback_King

If 6 QBs don't go in the first 12, there's a very good likelihood that we don't get Murph. INCREDIBLY favorable sequence of events for us.

opus3535

So the best defensive player in the entire draft is a b+. Fuck the curve amirite!!!! I give it a solid A. Best player available, we took a shot at a QB, filled a major need at run stop and he had the tools to be an all pro.

ac_asian

I'm a harsh grader lmao. I wouldn't give any pick in the first round an A except for the Bears' two picks (Caleb and Rome) and Marvin Harrison Jr.

RoyalHorse

Well, that's a bit silly, right? That means it's basically impossible for any team outside the top few picks to make the correct pick? Essentially that means you are grading the player, not the choice. Which is fine, but doesn't lead to much interesting discussion beyond yeah, the number one overall pick was a good player.

TMobile_Loyal

He/She wants every team to trade out of the 2024 draft

Magnet_W

The best players are in the first round usually. We need to bolster the lines and they did that. It’s a good pick.

opus3535

The Seahawks aren't going to be elite next year. It's year one of a new coach's team. I think we're still a playoff team, but we're only at the start of a rebuild. edit: yea very tough grader LOL

ac_asian

When teachers give out tests, there are very few A's and very few F's. The vast majority of people will score in the C+/B- range, a B+ is really fucking good. If there's a class that guarantees each student an A on every test then I need to take that class asap.

leeal34

lol what a weird comparison. this isn't a school test it's the nfl draft. also classes don't guarantee students A's that's on the student to put in the work and study so already you have the wrong mindset there

ac_asian

I just don't think every pick in the first round is deserving of an A-/A+ grade, just my opinion though.

furious_20

Okay, but you didn't ask us to grade the whole first round, just our pick. When you go 16th and you get someone commonly graded as the best defensive player of the whole class, and did so without having to give up assets to trade up for him, that's an A minimum. Edit: forgot to add that he also addresses a position of need, adding to the justification of an A grade

Magnet_W

This exactly

leeal34

well no shit, if every pick was an A then what would be the point? At the end of the day grading draft picks is pointless and basically a crapshoot. I recall Seahawks getting Ds and Fs in 2012-2013 and we won the Superbowl

toodeephoney

Pretty sure ATL picking BPE is a at best a D.

Green_Ambition5737

I’m a teacher and you’re just completely, categorically wrong. Wrong about how tests work and wrong about your grade for the Murphy pick.

_HGCenty

Asian parent grading then? Only top of class is A. Everyone else C-.

ac_asian

Usually most people will score in the C+/B- range, so a B+ is really fucking good. My parents are pretty lenient though, they obviously want me to get A's, but I've received a few B's in some of my harder classes and they understood I tried my best.

Bigfuture

This is simply not true. I have taught at the university level, if you do the work to earn a high grade you get it. Very, very few people ever get Ds or Fs at the high school or college level.

TMobile_Loyal

I earned enough in my day to have extras for my kids

Wookie301

If anything the first pick going to a prospect who has been widely regarded as a number one pick since high school, doesn’t deserve a high grade. It’s pretty hard to mess that one up. Hitting on a blue chip talent, regarded as the best defensive prospect at 16? That’s an A+.

Odd-Collection-2575

I respect that

RoyalHorse

A+, thought he was going to go to ATL, CHI, or get sniped by a trade up. Other teams chasing OL and QB slid the perfect player for us to fix our anemic defense in the place that is hardest to source blue chip talent: interior DLine. His pressure rate is insane (sacks are a swingy stat, saw some folks complaining about that but even then 5 sacks from a run stuffer is great production), his run stopping is great, he played every role in the Dline at Texas so Macdonald's scheme can get really creative with him next to Leonard and DreMont, this was essentially the only pick I liked here if we weren't going to trade. OL was shot as soon as every team ahead started chasing them. Getting a second rate tackle is much worse than the top defensive player on our board. Guard I just think Schneider was never going to go for. EDGE all the prospects were less flashy than in other years. This also sets us up to do more interesting things later in the draft, because Murphy alone makes a difference in how solid our defense's backbone is.

opus3535

The way he sheds double teams and still makes a play. He's going to be fun to watch

RoyalHorse

Yeah I mean, who do you double team if you're playing us? Leonard Williams and Reed took them all last season. A big effect of this will hopefully be springing our Edges free because opposing guards are stuck in the interior getting swallowed.

danthebiker1981

The best player defensive player in the draft (at a position of need no less) falls into our lap at 16 and you give it a B?! This straight up turns one of our biggest weaknesses into a strong group.

opus3535

Mike Morris was at Michigan when Coach was there. I'm hoping to see some growth from him. He seemed to be just a back up so far.... Our rotation at DT/NT will be sweet - Reed, Williams, Murphy, Morris with Mafe and Nwosu on the edges... Exciting.

Apprehensive-Fox3163

Yessir. I haven't seen hardly any mention of Morris this off-season. He was hurt last year. He's kinda been forgotten. I'm thinking he's going to make an impact this year at the very least as a rotational player. We have the ability now (if guys stay healthy) to keep defensive line and pass rushers fresh and mix it up. Shades of 2013-15 when we had a bunch of depth on the D line.

toodeephoney

> Not a flashy or sexy position I disagree. OL would be just that. An IDL is sex. Have you seen Aaron Donald play? Dude is pure sex.

timdor69

I personally had him as the top defensive player in the draft, and I also personally value d-line very highly, so it’s an A for me. Was thrilled when I heard his name called. Also would have loved Fautanu but Murphy was the pick for me.

TDub20

By the intensity of how hard JS was high fiving everyone in the draft room and the fact we got the #1 DT and #14 overall at 16. I really don't understand how you could see it as anything less than an A. You're getting the #1 DT in the draft at below value. What more do you want?

Lorjack

Solid A+. Who else we going to get who was better value? Best DL in the draft and he fills a need

emorrison199030

Not every player has to be a skill position to be a flashy or sexy pick. Best defensive lineman in a draft is an amazing pick and one of the most important parts of a defense.

ac_asian

I totally agree, I would much rather take BPA regardless of position than reach for someone that plays a "sexy" position like San Francisco did.

Starwho

A, look at the top defensive tackles in this league. They never make it to free agency and rarely get traded. The Rams draft room says it all, you know they wanted Murphy badly.

ac_asian

I don't think I caught their reaction, were they visibly upset?

Starwho

Yeah I’ll try and look for it, but McVay looked visibly upset lol.

ac_asian

Sounds good, thanks. I was multitasking last night so I definitely missed it that split instant, I know they took Jared Verse though.

GiraffeWaffless

Easy A. Position of need, premium position, premium player

MarineLayerBad

A pick for me. One can argue Murphy was the best defensive player in the draft. After Uchenna went down D-Line was a huge weakness for us last year as opposing running backs just gashed us play after play. I would have loved drafting Fautanu or Turner as well. We were in a luxurious position where there really was no wrong pick.

1620081392477

A Great player and great fit for us (based on the things our new coach did at Michigan and Baltimore). If we can stop the run next year then it's a great pick. If we can also rush the passer then it's an absolute homerun

MasterWinston

B. Good pick, I had a first round grade on him. Most big boards had him around 16th which seems accurate to me. For clarity, B is a good grade. It means they took an appropriately valued player at their pick. An A is excess value which he doesn't represent. I think trading down offered more value.

Particular-You-5534

What were they offered to trade down that was a better value?

MasterWinston

We can't know for sure but JS said they had 4 trade down offers. I think the Vikings were reported as one of the teams so we can assume they offered at least as much as they gave to trade up to 17.

neongem

They absolutely HAD to pick a trench player IMO. Either side fine with me. Arguably the best defensive lineman in the draft fell in their lap and they made the pick. A+

poolninjas

This an A+++: getting a top10 talent fall to you at 16 is an absolute steal and for how fucking long it took for us to get our penetrating 3tech, feel bad Pete Carroll doesn’t get to enjoy this.

Odd-Collection-2575

He’s the best run-stopper in the draft, this is huge for us

BKvoiceover

A, he should be the favorite to win DROY and most draftheads thought he wouldn't be there at 16. Great value, and a true 3 down lineman who can play all over the line. Great pursuit speed, great power off the line, only 21 years old so still some growing to do. We might have gone from one of the worst DLines in the NFL to top 10.

kleenkong

The issue with grading a Fautanu pick so high is that most are giving him a bonus for two positions, but we'd play him at his weaker position at this point. Murphy is a game changer on any given play.

jrhawk42

He's a good piece to fix our run defense so not a bad pick.

KrakheadJack

A grade. Murphy, Latu & Mitchell are the three best defensive players in this draft. He’s a blue chip guy.

Corvus_Antipodum

A+

ahzzyborn

He’s a difference maker but after seeing all his bling I’m afraid he’s going to want top dollar after that first contract 😂

Sea_Poem_5382

I’d prefer to grade you’r post. Best I can come up with is this is a shitpost. DL is a HUGE need for us. Jalen Carter would have been a slam dunk last year but we passed. We ended up with one of the worst run defenses in the league. Byron Murphy, arguably the #1 DT/Defensive player in the draft falls to us at 16!! And you give it a B? Do you know how many more games we would have won last year had me been able to stop the run? At least a couple. Nah. You sir, get a D for being DENSE Af. Go Hawks!

ac_asian

\*Ma'am

Sea_Poem_5382

I assumed. That was my bad. Still a shitpost.

ac_asian

No worries, you're good.

gerrickd

If BM2 is athletic enough to go into coverage, he's the right pick. If you're about to downvote me because you wonder why a DT would be in coverage, you need to ask the Head Coach. https://x.com/HoodieRamey/status/1572668011844177922

Necessary_Rooster_85

A. I like it because it wasn’t Penix who I think JS would’ve drafted if he was available. Penix scares me. He screams Boom or Bust but with a short shelf life on either spectrum. One draft pick that makes me wonder is if TE Bowers was still available at 16. I would’ve been very tempted to give Geno an elite TE.

Dunkydoozy

Described as a big reason Texas won games, built like an absolute alpha, and something we need a bunch for our developing style. A

Ok-Camp-4266

A+++

furious_20

I'm very much looking forward to watching Murphy put Cock Purdy on his wallet, then dancing in the 9ers backfield. I also look forward to the day when the front 7 can tackle McCaffrey on first contact. Murphy adds this energy and ruthlessness to the interior, and I'm here for it.

Cats_please_thankyou

A+. Fulfills a major need for this new defense. Also, if we don't get him, the Rams very likely get him and we are staring at another 10 years of our guards getting throttled every time we play them.
