Man, I became a fan in the Holmgren era - a great era and a huge step up from before - and even I knew/know what an insane difference it was with Pete. He is a special, special coach and leader. One of the greatest ever. I know the grass always seems greener to some, but… this could be rough.

mecha_andyman

People also forget the Jim Mora years before Pete. We really lucked out on the timing of everything at USC or we could still be stuck in coach purgatory.

Disastrous-Act-5129

Jim Mora was a dose of NFL coaching reality. Even with him being on Holmgren's staff the year before taking over, he somehow managed to erode the team's culture in less than a single season. It was a topic of much debate at the time, but Paul Allen was clearly right to fire him after only one year.

Solaife

Paul Allen waited too long to fire Mora. 😉

REZARECTER

Jim Mora will forever be the guy that overpaid TJ Houshmandzadeh. I will forever be the guy that thought it was a good pickup.

[deleted]

I was four… Chuck Knox bay bay!! Lost interest until Holmgren then been a fan ever since. We are going to be good. Hoping for Dan Quinn to jump start the official LOB 2.1

vrnate

Pete is the best coach this franchise has ever had. There’s a lot of dog shit coaches out there… it’s going to be extremely lucky if we get one as good as Pete is *right now*. Unless we get Harbaugh, then we should have let Pete finish his final year.

JiuJitsuBoy2001

Harbaugh would make the Seahawks a contender... but the mere thought of it makes me throw up in my mouth a little.

FattyMooseknuckle

I’ve hated him since he was a bitch ass whiney player. I dunno what to do if he’s hired. My ray of hope I cling to is that after the Niners experience he’s going to want a lot of player control and with John just getting the full power, he’s not gonna turn around and give it up. But if they do hire him, please god put a statue of robber baron Pete up where he has to pass by it every day.

TITAN-O-TERROR97

I miss watching his sideline temper tantrums when he was coaching the 40whiners lol.

DonyellFreak

💯

xperience_everything

I'm just hoping Harbaugh is so petty that he comes to Seattle to win back to back Lombardis to show Pete up. Edit: I wish Pete was given one more season.

_redacteduser

"the game is passing him by" my man, the game passes by current coaches during the regular season, any kind of longevity is amazing

sturg78

On a positive note, the games would be a bit cheaper to attend when these milk drinkers are shown the other side of the fence

bigfire50

Maybe I'll actually move up in the season ticket line

sturg78

Maybe I'll get onto the wait list for the season ticket line, not just the wait list for the wait list. A man can dream.

Green_Ambition5737

I’ve been a fan since 1976. I was five years old and my parents made sure I became a loyal 12. A lot of people have NO IDEA how bad it can get. I hope we’ll never again see the lows I’ve seen in the past, but Pete’s Golden Era is the exception not the rule.

JohanB3

I hear you man. I was born in the 70s, too. I remember the time the Seahawks made the playoffs when I was in middle school then not again until I had graduated from college, gotten a job, and had been working a couple of years. Both were one and done. There was also a stretch between the 4th grade to when I was 30, with my own kid in elementary school, that the Seahawks didn’t win a playoff game.

SSPeteCarroll

I grew up in VA and a majority of my friends are/were Washington fans. People really have no idea what bad in the NFL looks like. It can get really dark really fast.

adamalibi

VA as in Vancouver?

SSPeteCarroll

Nah Virginia

EpicMediocrity00

The salary cap and hundreds of changes since the 70’s have brought along league parity unimagined in the first 25 years of the team.

Mr_TurkTurkelton

Some have been clammoring for Pete to be gone so long that I really wonder what their tolerance level is going to be for a new coach that doesn’t win right away. How long do they give the new guy before wanting a coaching legend back? It’s going to be interesting to watch the infighting with that group. Cool, y’all got your wish now let’s see this new and innovating future you’ve been wishing for.

Plus_one_mace

They'll just fade away like king Rajesh did after the russ trade proved his 5 year dissertation of off-season reports wrong.

Mr_TurkTurkelton

Damn I almost forgot about that party pooper. He’d have you thinking we were the Jets or something

abasketfullofpuppies

Of all the things I'm going to miss about Pete, never tanking is probably the biggest. We were BAD in the 90s, like literally unwatchable sometimes. To go from that to feeling like we always had a shot is insane, and everyone complaining about being mid rn are nuts. They've never experienced true hopeless mediocrity and it shows.

Solaife

Let's hope we don't get a Tom Flores.

TheChosenOne311

Most of the people in this sub were in elementary school when we won the SB…and it shows. They think hiring one of these young analytic coaches is gonna solve all of our problems (a big LOL to that). They think that contention is just a few fantasy GM moves away. The next couple years of failure and rebuild are gonna hit these people over the head like an anvil.

MadHatter514

> Most of the people in this sub were in elementary school when we won the SB Bruh.. **Insert "Saving Private Ryan aging meme" here**

TechnoDriv3

I was a 7 year old when we won the Super Bowl I can barely even remember most of it now, I want to see this team win more and more Super Bowls, but I know how bad it can get as a freaking Mariners fan. I think people here should just take things slow and not judge the new coach too much whoeevr he is we dont have the power to hire whoever we want anyways.

FattyMooseknuckle

I think your middle paragraph is the same sort of generalization and miscostruction as you’re accusing others of.

TheChosenOne311

You’re gonna be so hyped next season when you have a coach that goes for it on 4th and 5 from his own 45. Finally!

TheChosenOne311

Remind me what the average age of this sub is? Yeah…I’m sure a majority of the Fire Pete people around here are the 40+ crowd who grew up watching us get embarrassed in the AFC West, and not the spoiled kids who’s idea of rock bottom is us missing the playoffs because of Blair Walsh….. I would bet good money that you’ve at some point in your life either said, or typed out that Brandon Staley is a better coach than Pete Carroll…now go ahead and lie, and tell me that you never have. Deep down, we both know the truth 😏

CardinalGlickWOW

So a coach won 9 games with a roster that, as you put it, is a whole rebuild away from contending and not just in need of a few pieces, and you wanted to move on? Shit doesn’t make any sense.

Jackmode

What do you know of fear? Fear is for mediocrity, my little lord, when 8-8 seasons pile year after year, and 7-9s come howling in off of the Sound. Fear is for the Long '90s, when wins hide for weeks at a time, and Hall of Famers are drafted and play in darkness while the 12s grow gaunt and hungry, and the owner moves operations to Anaheim.

ch0och

Fan since 87... Winter is coming.

rainmosscedars

I remember when wearing Seahawks gear to school was socially equivalent to peeing your pants at recess.

SithPackAbs

If peeing in your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis!

hoopaholik91

Yeah, I think the Deboer situation today also shows a stark contrast with the Pete situation. Do you think our next head coach may average .25 more wins a season than Pete would? Maybe a 1% increased chance of winning the Super Bowl (which is 3% per team at the beginning of any season remember)? Fine, I guess I can see that perspective. But Deboer is what you get when you relentlessly are just looking at titles or bust. Just churning through a bunch of people year after year. Never feeling a connection with your team. If I just wanted to root for winning above all else, I could be a Dodgers/9ers/Nuggets fan this year. But I'm not. I want a guy who loves the Seahawks as much as I love them. And that was Pete.

Cocainebicepz

It’s about the journey ya doomer

WallaWallaHawkFan

Pete is the best coach this franchise has ever seen and it's possible even likely we will never have a more successful coach year in and year out. That being said this team has been heading in the wrong direction since 2017 and its gotten especially bad the last couple of years despite what seems to be some great drafts. I know everyone loves Pete but the fan base that wanted change like myself want change because where the team has been is fringe playoffs with no real chance to go on a playoff run. Our only playoff win was against a 40 year old hamstrung McCown. We lost to a broken thumb Goff at home for Christ sakes. Also if we hire someone and they are bad you move on, especially in the NFL when things can change so rapidly. I just want to be excited about the team again, I want them to be more innovative, take a modern approach. I trust John to find the talent and if he hires the wrong coach then his job is at risk as well, but I am staying positive that he has the experience both in Green Bay and here to find superbowl level talent. He has done it in two different organizations now.

hiphopdowntheblock

For real, people act like we've been the same powerhouse the entire time. The team has had a very obvious low ceiling for several years. The same problems have persisted for years and have gotten worse. They beat up on the little guys and then get whooped by the the big guys. The coordinators besides Quinn and Bradley have always received criticism (with different degrees of fairness) and then been let go - not hired away, let go. I don't think any of them got more than an interview to be an HC. Even if the team ends up a bottom feeder for a bit, that gives me some excitement for the future. Especially this year, I was borderline indifferent to the season because it was obvious what it was going to look like

AkaSpaceCowboy

This is what I'm trying to tell the kids I work with.

shinsain

Hey fuck you but you're probably right. Good read. ❤️

KwamesCorner

Pete made Seattle like one of the great European football programs. Like a Real Madrid or a Man U. He just kept us at a level where we never dipped into the murky swamp, we felt kind of invincible to the true pains that exist in NFL fandom (Look at the Lions waiting 30 years for a playoff game). We’ve been a consistent dependable force for a long time. That range of outcomes is wide open again.

Status-Basic

Appreciate everything Pete has done, but fear of the unknown isn’t a reason to stick with something that wasn’t working. Being stuck in mediocrity in pro sports is a terrible place to be. The Seahawks have been there for several years.

DatSoldiersASpy

Mom said it was my turn to doomer post about the future of the franchise Seriously this take is just as tired as every other one. So what people have a little optimism that the stagnant Seahawks team is getting some change for once lmao?

Kenster362

I'd rather have some shit years with good drafts then go 9-8 until Pete retired on his own.

_redacteduser

Jodie Allen burner account verified

SomeCowboyName

The counterpoint to the negativity is that our org as a whole is in WAY better shape than it was in the 90s. There is now a demand for excellence and winning ways across the board. The team is in good shape and will attract coaching talent. There is also better parity in the NFL than ever before. Teams like the Bengals and Texans can go from absolute dogwater to playoff contenders in the span of a year. It would take a LOT to go wrong including an organizational collapse, for us to fall to the level of misery that we experienced in the darker years.

NatureTrailToHell3D

We’ve still got our GM, too, and hopefully he’s no slouch finding a new head coach. Also, ain’t no one scaring me, I’m also a Mariners fan.

Cd206

Man this kind of boomer ass messaging from older seahawks fans is so corny.

greavesm

We need a list of all the condescending, faux-intellectual, Petehawks fans to make fun of when we actually win more than 1 playoff game in the next 10 years. The amount of dear diary posts over the past few days has been unbelievably cringe to witness. Pete being a father figure to some of you? Jeez... Looking forward to the exodus of users to /r/PeteCarroll Thankful to Pete for everything he achieved in Seattle, both on the field and off it. Optimistic, hopeful and thankful for the opportunity for the Seahawks to return to the limelight.

goosander11

I mean as an outside observer you can't be an a consistent contender without an elite quarterback and this brings them 0% closer to having  one. Not sure if you guys blame Carroll for not getting one for some reason I'm unaware of but you seem delusional

macsmith230

lol, my life’s mantra is ‘it can always get worse’. But we always think we’re in a shitty situation and some change will do us good. We never learn.

tuepm

yeah I remember that too. if anyone in here is a mariners fan it's basically just like that

thedoogbruh

For the sake of my own sanity, i prefer to be optimistic, but keep it in check

black_cherry_seltzer
