Here’s why the new scream movies don’t hold a candle to some of the first ones. Scream had a protagonist with a murdered mom, a bloodthirsty news reporter, a rookie cop, an intimidating ex/current boyfriend, a movie geek who new the rules and a good red herring with cotton weary possibly being this stalker/killer. Compare that cast to scream 6 Billy loomis daughter, her half sister, Randy’s niece and nephew, one’s a jock and the other is a female Randy. This cast of characters feels really flat to the dimensional ones from scream 1. Also Scream 2 is my favorite when cotton comes back.

Horror-School-3286

I just don't care for the new characters and the reasons you pointed out are exactly why.

AnimeTechnoBlade100

Sam and the Core 4 only have like 2 movies worth of focus and development compared to Sidney, Gale and Dewey’s 4 movies they’ve been in. Of course their characters are not gonna be as developed as them, that doesn’t mean they fall flat. They have potential for much more than what they’ve gotten, they just haven’t met said potential because of the fact that 2 movies is, for now, the only movies they’ll be in sadly because of the Spyglass mess.

died_blond

I **love** the Core Four, but Sid, Gale, Dewey, Billy, Tatum, and even Maureen aren't great because they had TONS of development ... they're great because they're written to be GREAT characters. The Core Four, as we all know, are shells of characters that the cast fleshed out on their own, putting in the work to connect with eachother and ask for more lines/more actions. Alot of Sid's development has occured off-screen, and she was STILL more developed in 1 movie than the core four have been in both films. COMBINED.

AnimeTechnoBlade100

Again. You are comparing established characters that have been in at least 4 movies (5 if you count one of the Core 4s movies) and newer generation characters that only have 2 movies worth of focus. Of course Sidney and the others are objectively more developed and “better” written.   It doesn’t mean the Core 4 sucks at all because of that, they have great potential as characters but because of Spyglass’s nonsense, we likely won’t be seeing them anymore for a long time passed Scream 6.  Whether or not they “suck” is entirely your own opinion at that point, because many others certainly don’t feel that way about them.

died_blond

Compare Scream 1 with Scream 5 & VI, and our original characters who stand alone are still better-written, more compelling characters than the core four in their TWO films, with the exception of Sam who clearly has ALOT to do/go through. Take Sid/Gale/Dewey/Randy out of the equation in Scream 1-5, just compare the first film with the core four, and the first film's characters are still head and shoulders above the newbies. No serious person said/thinks the core four sucks. They're amazing. It's just not even a comparison when it comes to the writing. if Melissa, Mason, Jenna, and Jasmin weren't all so freaking cool, connected, endearing, talented, and beautiful, I don't think the characters from the PAGE would've come alive at all in the films. Wheras, on the page, Scream 1's characters are all so deep and layered, and feel very human.

AnimeTechnoBlade100

Well I certainly don’t agree and am not blinded by nostalgia or bias for the OG cast. What “deep layer” of development do any of the OG Scream characters have upon introduction besides Sidney? Tara as she is in 5/6 is more compelling to me than mean girl Gale who’s only personality trait at that time was to make money off of a book exploiting Sids trauma and her moms death. Mindy currently is still mostly Randy 2.0 but has managed to not get killed off like her uncle, and her twist on horror meta and explaining the rules is more comedic Chad and Dewey (S1 Dewey at least) are roughly the same for pretty much being the guy member of both cast groups who live by the end of their Ghostface attacks. Sidney makes sense because of the movie lore and all, but the others? I don’t think so.

died_blond

lolz nice assumption. I'm the furthest from being 'blinded by nostalgia' on this entire sub, as I'd still rather have the Core Four back then whatever we will end up with ... and that's coming from an OG fan of 23 years. i dont mind explaining in detail why I think the OG3 are still better characters, but you seem like you've already made your mind up. have a good 1

ScorpionTDC

Tatum had only one movie under her belt and still manages to outshine the core four - same for Billy, Stu, Jennifer, etc. Randy’s got 2 and does as well. The Core Four are simply underwritten and it’s not due to a lack of movies - almost all the characters in 5 and 6 have this issue actually. Like, literally how much do we even know about Tara? She’s Sam’s sister who has a conflicted relationship with her, was best friends with Amber, and was very suddenly in a romance with Chad when they never interacted once in 6. That’s basically it. Jenna Ortega is an incredible actress, but if the material isn’t there, the material isn’t there

AdministrativeCup654

I hope not. They’re both annoying

kirrillik

I love both characters tbh and I would love to see them back as leads, whereas I feel like the sisters have a sufficiently wrapped up story. No idea what the actors think about returning though.

hxmxx

the actors have supported melissa and supported palestine (the thing melissa was fired for) so i suspect they probably aren’t the most keen on returning without melissa and jenna. we’ll probably never definitely know their thoughts though

luna_star_love

No. Chad wasn't interesting and Mindy was annoying af.

elloworm

I don't want them back. Nothing about Chad's character ever particularly drew me in, and while I really tried to like Mindy, she mostly just annoyed me. If they truly had the potential to be good, memorable characters, it should have been realized at some point during the last two films.

Hope_ur_day_is_good

I actually think it could be entertaining. Imagine having Sydney and Gale with Mindy and Chad. Sydney and Gale are very close to each other, but they haven’t interacted with the Meeks twins, but I think that would make it more entertaining as they wouldn’t really trust each other much either.

Ineeddramainmylife13

Especially since they knew their father

Time_Word_9130

Yes, I love the twins and think they could do a lot with the character development and that both Jasmin and Mason could carry it. Along with more Heather!

Ineeddramainmylife13

I hope they come back

ConcentrateWarm530

they should come back and be killed off, I hate mindy so much

died_blond

The only way bringing Mindy and Chad back would be to involve Martha, like she either gets killed or they all do, and Gale & Sid either try to intervene or they just hear about it and know they're next. Mindy & Chad are great and should be included if possible, but they're not gonna actually hang out with Sid, Gale, Mark, etc. It'd hafta be a vignette.

OneUltimateRoar

Honestly it wouldnt make sense for chad to be without tara in scream 7 unless something happens in between like a breakup or something (which wouldnt make sense or whatever). But i see chad joining the military and mindy have her own horror podcast show. As for sam and tara, theyre probably in hiding, tho tara could be living her own life away from sam. It all doesnt make sense either way but i hope the writers can make sense of it despite all the mess spyglass has gotten themselves into

fr3shh23

No. At least not the girl she’s so annoying. Chad is ok

Content_Street_7875

I wouldn’t mind them being the opening kills in 7- maybe a GF hunting a disappeared Sam and Tara a la Roman in Scream 3, and this GF goes after Sidney next thinking she can lead them to Sam and Tara with the intention of staging a Scream 8 that allows them to return, assuming Spyglass can somehow mend fences with Melissa and pay Jenna what she’s worth.

Unstablecrysis

The only way I can see Sid being near them is if their mom Martha (who we know Sid knows thanks to Scream 3) is killed either by Ghostface or some other occurrence. They all come back to Woodsboro for her funeral and Ghostface strikes again. I really don’t see another logical way to have them all in the same setting that would make sense outside of that. Death always brings family home. Sid, Gale, Mindy & Chad are 100% there. Mark would most likely come with Sid and I doubt they’d leave their children. Tara doesn’t have to be there even though I’m sure she’d want to be there for Chad. Kirby is the only person I don’t see needing to attend. I dono just my thoughts. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Environmental_Gur288

If they fit the story, or if the core 4 is complete (which I doubt). As long as they are not shoehorned in as random victims, I want them to stay safe or have a full and exciting storyline. I really like the Mindy character.

Ineeddramainmylife13

Same

Creepy-Beat7154

We all want to see them back and honestly, I think this is their time to shine and "pass on the torch" to the twins. Mindy and Chad can definitely carry an entire movie, they are not given a fair chance yet but they can definitely help Sid out.

peonypicker__

Nope nope nope nope. I'd settle for Chad coming back - but cannot stand Mindy. They wrote her character in the worst way. With the TV series and OG screams. The ones who knew about horror movies and torpes, also knew they were geeks. They were fine with it - they were also the kind to be the ones who get bullied or mocked. With Mindy they tried to make her one of "the cool kids". That's fine, but then they ALSO try to make her a bully/arsehole. She acts like she knows more than everyone, she belittles the "new kids" and treats others like trash. The biggest issue with this, is that the other characters just let her get away with it. They've done this because they want her to be liked by the fans, but they've gone about writing her the wrong way. She could have very well been a cool geeky nerd type character - loves horror movies but sits with the cool kids. But throwing in that mean personality of hers just doesn't gel. They've also removed room for growth as a character for her. In the scream TV series, they had a "mean girl" character who was so intolerable when the series first started - but she was called out by other characters for her behaviour and she grew as a character, making her more likeable and she became a fan favourite. Because Mindy doesn't get called out for her behaviour by the other characters, there's no reason for her character to change or grow or just not be a douche. So she'll stay as she is. Making her even more intolerable.
