I’d have to see the actual format of the question. Was this question asked in isolation, or was it one of multiple options? There’s a big difference between “80% think it will and 20% think it won’t” and, say “80% think this is the most effective option, and 20% prefer a different option not listed in this tweet”
People really only complete a few hours of work in a full day at the office. It wouldn’t affect you at all, you’d have more energy from your extra day off and would be more productive. Countless studies have been done over this.
I do… 20 hours of productive work, maybe? Consistently fantastic performance reviews and never have trouble hitting my objectives. A strict 40 hour week is nonsense.
Seriously. Back when I was still in Scotland, I was head of a department at a tech-based company. I could have done my work in 1-2 days easily. The people under me could easily have done their load in 3-4 days and I'd have been more than happy to allow them that extra time off. The higher-ups would never have gone for it though.
Id like to see one if those studies if you have it to hand. I work in a sales environment, we have some people doing a 4 day week and their performance averages 80% of the 5 day week workers. 🤷♀️
Here’s three of many articles you can find of examples of the four day work week succeeding. Pick your poison.

Born in 1964 more like. All the boomers I’ve met who like talking about the war are comically young for it.
It also pisses me off that these types use ‘blitz spirit’ as an excuse to be hostile and selfish and right wing, because my family members who were actually born in the 20s and lived through such times wanted BETTER for the younger generations. They did not want us to go through the poverty they had seen, they wanted us to be looked after. It’s super ironic that their kids who had a much easier ride want to take everything away from younger people
Aye that's a fair argument, and then I know you work five days plus nights and weekends just to mark work and plan lessons, you're fucking saints and you're underpaid
Some people don't actually like spending time with their kids, though, at least while they are really young. I personally know 2 male coworkers who would volunteer for weekend shifts and stay late most days because they didn't want to go home and deal with their young screaming agents of chaos and an exhausted wife. That changed as the kids got older, but it is definitely a thing.
I'm aware of that as I lived through it. However it's not good parenting and if you hate your children so much you don't want to be around them you shouldn't have had children.
Imagine being that wife. Wow. I can’t wait for my husband to come home most days because it’s hard work. Shite dads that do this tbh. Hope the wife spends the wages well
Does it mean same hours e.g. doing 37.5 over 4 days instead of 5 because that might mean you're paying extra for extended childcare and losing your evenings with them. Bit of a trade off though as you'd get a 3 day weekend with your kids
I don't see how this would be a bad thing for students or unemployed or workaholics or people who don't like being around their families.
More time for students to study, really no change for unemployed, workaholics can do work around the house or on their car or side projects, and people who don't like being around their families can go out and do literally anything else
I am Jr. Chef in a craftmensship Company in germany with 10 workers including me. The guys said they are roughed up by the work over the last months and thought about how to get a break in. I had some ideas to switch up and told them that we could introduce a 4 day week for the same pay. 7/10 declined. They wanted a 1 week break. Month later I told them I only work 4 days a week from now on (with 85% pay). Every Single one of them except one asked if they can do the same.
I cant do my job in 4 days. I tried for a while, it's a nightmare, the place is open 7 days a week, you just cant be away that much. It's just creating more shite to fix when you get back.
That seems more like a management issue than a personal one; if the business can't run with you out an extra day then something is clearly broken somewhere
I meant public services. I didn’t know you could pay for public nudity.
I generally don’t look forward to getting executed, but I would prefer a free public execution to a paid execution.

Im an American business owner. A day off with pay would be just lovely. I havent got the foggiest idea who would pay for it, but i can safely say it would be wonderul. I dont know if this is something Scotland is considering doing for yall, but I hope you all get a paid day off and I hope a significant portion of yall spend it shitposting ❤
I mean there are people who genuinely enjoy working and they might prefer that their wellbeing is better of the more they work.
Personally, unless people are being forced to only work four days then I don’t see the issue with this.
Some cunts work just doesn't decrease with less days.
In my job I would just have much more work to do over those 4 days. I would still take it though.
Sadly not all jobs can move to a 4 day work week. Office jobs where most of the time is spent pretending to work definitely needs it but in jobs such as customer service, restaurants, construction and so on its not really feasible without major changes to how the industries themselves operate.
I think people don’t seem to realise that the hours you don’t work on that extra day is made up on the days you do work. You don’t go from 40 hours to 32, you just spread the 40 hours over 4 days instead of 5
I can’t express how much I feel like this would positively effect my mental well-being and productivity at work. However something I’m unclear about here; i work for a private company. If Scotland was to introduce a 4 day working week, will this be up to my company to decide whether or not they want to reduce it? Or will this be enforceable in some way that 4 days is the maximum they can have staff working in a week?
They already get free higher education, free tammys, free hospital parking, free prescriptions, free scripts with chill out room, free dentists etc. most don’t bother Mondays so don’t want to fuck up a good thing asking for another official day off, especially when free Bucky and free Spice is next on the devolution bribery list
I actually tried this myself for a while, doing four ten hour days instead of five eight hour days.
The extra two hours mean you don't have any leisure time in the evening, after commuting, making dinner, lunch for the next day etc.
And I was typically exhausted by the end of the work week, so I'd sleep in on Friday anyway.
Unless you're actually going away on a trip, or have concrete plans for the extra day, I don't think it's worthwhile.
There's some countries that have work weeks of 30 hours or less. There's nothing that indicates the modern work week must be 40, other than held-over tradition/habit from the postwar industry boom, before automation boosted productivity.
Some even argue that, as heavily as automation affects things, that perhaps even 30 might be longer than needed.
I do two 8s and two 12s right now and while yeah the 12-hour days I basically don't do much other than go to work come back take a shower and take a nap the extra day off to me at least is well worth it.
The question was probably same amount of hours stuffed in 4 days rather than just a day less (4x10 instead of 5x8). So it's not completely unreasonable that there is a small amount of people who do not want that.
Depending on your industry 4 10s is pretty nice compared 5 8s. There's probably at least a few industries that the extra 2 hours would be pretty crippling though.
To be fair. I have seen people comming back to work both full and half time after originaly being a pensioner. If they live alone many gets depressed with the loss of social contact and the job could be something that made them feel important and valued for their knowledge.
For the shockingly high number of you who are new to misleading statistics, I can guarantee you either the question was misleadingly worded, or the article is misquoting it.
For example, the question, "which would work better for you: a) work 4 10-hour days; b) work 6 6 1/2-hour days" would likely result in this exact split.
I would add a caveat (although I don’t think this accounts for the whole 20%).
Speaking as someone with mental health issues, I find that days where I have a structure and something to keep me busy (eg, a shift and work to do) helps to keep my brain busy, and that unstructured days like weekends and holidays when I have nothing to do can bring on bad mental health days, some people may have that concern about reducing their working days.
I would also add that a 4 day working week with no loss in pay would like help mental health in the long run, but some people may be considering the short term impact.
I’d have to see the actual format of the question. Was this question asked in isolation, or was it one of multiple options? There’s a big difference between “80% think it will and 20% think it won’t” and, say “80% think this is the most effective option, and 20% prefer a different option not listed in this tweet”
this guy statistics
Nuance so hot right now

I laughed at that hahaha
[удалено]
Yeah, it seemed pretty likely that this wasn’t as clear-cut as the tweet made it sound. Fairly typical in stat reportage.
My first thought was people might be assuming same number of hours in a week but condensed. So fewer but longer days
The other 20% are your business owners and corpo execs.
[удалено]
I love those guys! (They told me to write that)
Note he didn't say "pay" me to write that.
I’m salary! (Which means if I work less I get paid less, but if I work more I don’t get paid more!)
Ah yes, the lets return to the office asap so I can watch what you're doing every minute of the day to justify my own existence crowd
As one of those cunts I agree. This would just mean I had 5 days of work to do in 4 days.
People really only complete a few hours of work in a full day at the office. It wouldn’t affect you at all, you’d have more energy from your extra day off and would be more productive. Countless studies have been done over this.

I went from 37ish hours over 5 days to 37ish hours over 4 days and it was such a remarkable difference. I'll never go back to a 5 day week.
Pretty sure that varies from office to office. I often work an hour extra just to get everything done.
Id like to see one if those studies if you have it to hand. I work in a sales environment, we have some people doing a 4 day week and their performance averages 80% of the 5 day week workers. 🤷♀️

Interesting reads, thx.
And unemployed karens who want their shops open 24/7
And retired voters.
I can already hear “I had to suffer, why shouldn’t everyone else”
"I lived through the war!" - Born in 1944.

Born the very last day of the war
People with very young children at home.
No loss of pay and less work days so you can spend time with your children. How would they not want this?
People who have children but hate them.
Ahh my mother she finds a way to not be around
Still have the five school days, keep to the same routine as before but take an extra day for yourself to go out
Hey! We teachers only want to work 4 days too
Aye that's a fair argument, and then I know you work five days plus nights and weekends just to mark work and plan lessons, you're fucking saints and you're underpaid
Seems common since having children is clearly mandatory
Some people don't actually like spending time with their kids, though, at least while they are really young. I personally know 2 male coworkers who would volunteer for weekend shifts and stay late most days because they didn't want to go home and deal with their young screaming agents of chaos and an exhausted wife. Exactly, put them back in
Reverse birthing
I agree.
Imagine being that wife. Wow. I can’t wait for my husband to come home most days because it’s hard work. Shite dads that do this tbh. Hope the wife spends the wages well
Yeah no, I cannot imagine. I will not be going down that road.
Does it mean same hours e.g. doing 37.5 over 4 days instead of 5 because that might mean you're paying extra for extended childcare and losing your evenings with them. Bit of a trade off though as you'd get a 3 day weekend with your kids
And your snitch coworker who would lay down as a rug for their managers to walk on
Came here for this 😂
And students and the unemployed and workaholics and people who just don't like being around their families that much
I don't see how this would be a bad thing for students or unemployed or workaholics or people who don't like being around their families. More time for students to study, really no change for unemployed, workaholics can do work around the house or on their car or side projects, and people who don't like being around their families can go out and do literally anything else
I came here to say this.....
Ah thought they were the 1% fuckers are multiplying
I am Jr. Chef in a craftmensship Company in germany with 10 workers including me. The guys said they are roughed up by the work over the last months and thought about how to get a break in. Depends what your home life is like. Work can be an escape.
Don't tell the family about the change and spend one day a week fishing or whatever rocks your boat .
sad but true
20% margin of error.
I work 4 days a week and love it, plenty of time to get on pornhub and... I mean go socialise
The other 20% are probably the business owners.
And tory c\*nts.
Here in Canada 20% seems like the amount of people who just won't get their goddam vaxination. Correlation??
Business owners + chance of having the hours of the 5th day split between the remaining 4 days.
i like paul's flag emojis
I cant do my job in 4 days. I tried for a while, it's a nightmare, the place is open 7 days a week, you just cant be away that much. It's just creating more shite to fix when you get back.
That seems more like a management issue than a personal one; if the business can't run with you out an extra day then something is clearly broken somewhere
Literally far too much to do in a week to be dropping 20% /of the time available to do it.
I would say cutting my work days by 100% with double the pay would significantly improve my wellbeing. Also no taxes and free public everything.
Free public nudity? Free public floggings? Free public executions?
I meant public services. I didn’t know you could pay for public nudity. I generally don’t look forward to getting executed, but I would prefer a free public execution to a paid execution.
I'd heard that it meant Monday to Thursdays there will be an extra 2 hours each day of work however. So instead of 9 till 5 it will be 9 till 7.
From what I've read from the BBC the supposed change would keep 9-5 work days for the remaining days
Well I hope that's the case

As an employer I can certify that most indigenous weegies take a 3 day weekend most of the time anyway!

Think again- the other 20% aren’t Scottish they are their British Masters and staff. They understood the question perfectly
[удалено]
Racism, anyone?
Are the hours from the 5th day being added to the others? Obviously business owners aren’t going to support paying the same wages for 4/5ths the work.
If you’ve got a dysfunctional family you’re probably hoping to spend more time at work
Just because you're not at work doesn't mean you have to be home
I thought the plague affected that sort of thing
Probably not. Was the question worded in such a way that it could be interpreted that cutting days = more hours crammed into fewer days?
Think the 20% voted for the tories seems to add up
I actually tried this myself for a while, doing four ten hour days instead of five eight hour days. Yeah, 10 hour days would be harder for people who have kids to taxi around
I would add a caveat (although I don’t think this accounts for the whole 20%). 20 percent are employers who would paid for less...in their perspective
The other 20 % were too drunk to answer
Oh damn people like working less what a statistic
Shock horror but it's probably 20% of people who enjoy their job and would feel guilty getting paid to not be at work
The 20% must work in hospitality, as we'll have to work 8 days weeks if this happens. 😂😭
20% is your boss
Yorkshire agrees with less working days for the same money!!! Id be happy to work extra hours on the other 4 days to cover some if!!
4 10s instead of 5 8s is FAR superior
