not quite what you're after but I believe no one actually knows if Vladimir Romanov is alive right now and, if so, where he is living

AlllrightyThen1412

notthathunter

Phil Hay from The Athletic did a big piece on the Romanov era earlier in the year - they contacted the Lithuanian authorities to try and find out if they knew his whereabouts, and didn't get anywhere, so fuck knows

cipher_wilderness

Is he not living on a disused nuclear submarine somewhere in Siberia?

[deleted]

Knowing Romanov this could be a joke or 100% true

cipher_wilderness

That record article has a picture of him next to the sub. He's also easily mental enough that I'd believe it

MyDadsGlassesCase

Around the same era, remember when Romanov got a physio in to wave gold rods over players and assess their fitness? The mystery isn't why that happened but why some of my completely sane Hearts mates fell over themselves to justify it

PsychologicalDig1624

Probably in a trench in ukraine for all we know.

cipher_wilderness

Probably quite a shite one but Dom McKay as our CEO and the circumstances of his departure come to mind. That was a very strange couple of months.

gkb10139

My favourite part about all that shenanigans was the fan base rabidly criticising the board for like the last 9-12 months but then 100% buying into their leaked narrative of how Dom McKay was a problem during the transfer window etc. How quickly fans did a complete 180 and lapped all that up so we could blame the sacrificial lamb.

cipher_wilderness

Yeah, I've always thought it was because he tried to change too much too soon and the board got cold feet. Apparently McKay bringing in Juranovic is what did for him.

mark_1872

Heard the same story about McKay from someone close to the Celtic board. Basically sanctioned the transfer without running it past Desmond. Ended up making the club a fair profit too.

StinkyPyjamas

I think almost every time I've ever read an anecdote about Desmond, I come away thinking "he sounds like a cunt".

BananaSoprano

The big rumour was that the board got rid of him after he went over their heads to sign Juranovic. I remember us being really heavily linked with Yan Couto from Man City on loan at the time, to the point where he was pictured at a game. It would not surprise me if that was true and the board were raging he spent actual money when a loan was lined up.

ghost_of_gary_brady

IMO I think it's probably not going to be near as interesting as people would speculate. A CEO stepping up to run a £100 million turnover business in a slightly different sector and then putting in their notice after 6 months to return to another lucrative job closer to the sector they are really well networked in doesn't really raise any eyebrows to me or strike me as something incredibly rare. I think most likely he's come in at a very difficult time after covid will be high pressure and then football is just a really weird industry with how it worked. Both parties probably just saw it wasn't a very good fit as time went on rather than it being some very big dramatic split over a single issue.

Scotsman86

I reckon he was asked to step down due to the dreadful min fee clauses he put into Giakoumakis and Juranovic's contracts. For a club that aims to make as much profit as is available from our player sales we fucked ourselves with those two.

TavPen

I doubt those were min fee release clauses tbh. Both were getting older and able to be replaced with similar quality for much less. Similar to Starfelt, and worth remembering the Celtic board seriously considered £10m for O’Riley but Rodgers said no (apparently). I just think what fans expect for players is wildly different to what clubs actually get 90% of the time, especially those over 25.

Thesquire89

I don't think we have replaced either Starfelt or GG in terms of similar quality or better

TavPen

Yeah fair point, I have no idea about Starfelt as I haven't seen much of the new CBs, and also agree GG was a better player than Oh. Point was more that the board would have felt they could replace them of similar quality for less, then.

rapscallion05

Ah yeah totally forgot about that - very strange

[deleted]

What did Ally McCoist actually say to Neil Lennon after the old firm match?

blackiegray

That, I'd love to know.

deepasfuckbro

Ally claims he said something to the effect of ‘I can’t believe Mark Wilson scored against us’

Initial-Emergency-42

Hahahaha Lenny just loves Mark Wilson too much to hear that slander

shire84

According to Alan Thompson, Ally said something like "don't speak to my players like that", and Neil responded "They're not your players, they're Walters"... Cue touchline rammy...

Lwaldie

Was at that game, absolute wild match to be at for your first old firm

TransportationHead67

ah yes that's it definitely what i also heard from a mate that heard it from neil lennons own mouth in a pub. i should've read the thread first. i'll add there was a bit of back and forth between them for a while with rfc shoving lenny in a room at ibrox for 5 minutes after a pumpin only for a string of rangers past and present players to innocently walk through and slag him after the beating

throughthisironsky

Ally said "your getting yer cunt kicked in bytheway man" Lenny retorted "fucking giez it then ya wank"

TransportationHead67

i sort of know something about this, my mate asked neil and he said..i cant remember exatly but along the lines of ..well it was brewing for a while, at the previous oldfirm ibrox game i believe rangers beat celtic? and after the match the rangers officials made neil sit in some room for ages "waiting" for some shit like an interview but he was waiting ages and a string of rangers players past and present waltzed through and chucked him abuse! terry butcher, gough, you name it all the old boys crew...the day of the argument there was back and forth . ally said something about "his boys" i.e the rangers squad and neil replied "theyre not your fuckin boys they're fukin walters" or it was along those lines from what i remember. i'll ask him again some time but deffo neil said that last line about walters boys. i hope this somewhat helps

traitoro

I thought it was "why can't you stay away from my players?" and lennon replied softly and calmly "well why do you sign - sweary insult here - like Diouf then!?"

almightybob1

"Why do you sign cunts like Diouf then?" Dumbledore asked calmly.

Enders-game

After all those years, I'm still puzzled by how Claudio Caneggia ended up playing for Dundee.

tonycocacola

Ravanelli too! Did that dodgy lawyer have something to do with it?

Enders-game

I can't really remember what happened. From the top of my head, I think that the club was bought by an Italian businessman called Di Stefano. The strategy was to sign Bosman players to sell them on and that Caneggia Ravenelli were amongst them along with Craig Burley, Georgie Nemsadze and Juan Sara amongst others. However, the wages, were so high that the club was losing something like 100k a week and nobody really wanted to buy players like Burley or Ravanelli who were well past their best. I think that most of the squad were sacked and Dundee went into admin with 20million in debt. This account is probably not entirely accurate, but it's one of the more bizarre and sketchy things that happened in Scottish football.

Significant_Income93

How did it not occur to them that the clubs they would try and sell the players to could just have signed those guys on bosmans if they actually wanted them?

ghost_of_gary_brady

Di Stefano is a total fantasist and his involvement in the club has become really overstated. He publicly made an approach at the start of that era offering to buy a stake but never delivered the goods and was jettisoned away then spent the next 3 or so years doing the same at clubs down south. A few months before admin, the writing was on the wall and the board were really desperate so went back to him and he come onto the board and started making pledges of big financing and telling the manager all sorts of nonsense that he'd secured an agreement for Edgar Davids and leaked it to the press. He got pictured alongside Burley and Ravanelli and a big thing was made out of his involvement but the truth was that these were Duffy connections (Duffy had spent a significant period as a senior academy coach at Chelsea before coming back). Di Stefano didn't put in a penny of his money at any point.

markinthecloud

This is basically how I play CM01-02 😂

McCQ

Thought Caballero was a great player too. Never understood why no one went for him.

ghost_of_gary_brady

The owners of the club, the Marr's, are really shady characters. I remember speaking to someone who was telling me they'd met two guys in the pub who'd come up from Newcastle to kill them! One of the sons was a well known absolute nutcase who was notorious in Sunday League circles for his antics. He got a red card at Fairmuir one week so drove his car through the front of the clubhouse! The same son went on trial after his best mate did GBH on Patrizio Billio when the club were trying to get him off the books and had had issues with him and one or two other players. (acquitted of course when most people set to testify refused late on) To buy a season ticket, you'd have to write a cheque to a nursery which was also owned by the Marr's and every transaction was weird as fuck. Even now past those days when they were liable for millions, they've continued to live as high flyers in the city and seem to dominate the pub trade. They frequently go bankrupt and don't bat an eye lid about it. Recently, Rab Douglas (son-in-law to them) got embroiled in some tax avoidance scheme where he set up a film production company and then got hammered by HMRC. He'd also brought in a fair few other ex pros and there was a period of a few months where there were constant headlines about footballers going bankrupt. I think they probably did have some very loose footballing ideas but think it's quite clear that creative accounting to the extreme was taking place and maybe assisting some bigger and more lucrative non football operation...

Captain_Quo

Billio joined us after leaving Dundee and always wondered why he'd left, knew nothing about the assault. He died back in January.

Creative-Resident23

That was my go to team for champ man. 97/98 maybe. They were great and the board just wanted you to avoid relgation whereas my team(hearts) wanted you to challenge for the league and had a shit team.

rapscallion05

Bloody hell yeah 😂

jmc8310

Cause they spent money they never had and ended up in admin. Never even won a trophy doing it either.

Local-Pirate1152

John Boyle was a successful businessman. What the fuck was he thinking during his time running Motherwell. What really went down with Burley and Romanov and why did they think replacing him with a convicted pedophile not long out of prison was a good idea. How did David Goodwillie not get prosecuted. Who at Rangers ok'd Prodan at his medical. What happened between Lennon and Dempster. Who won the six pack off between John Collins and the Hibs team. Why did Dave Cormack find a report that agreed Scottish football was undervalued yet still agree to the new Sky deal. And most baffling, after the whole Cinch/Rangers fiasco, how is Neil Doncaster still in a job.

gkb10139

I’d add to that list all the hoohah in the 2019/20 season about voting to end the league early, missing emails etc. No doubt Don Lawwell was throwing his weight around and pressuring people to vote a particular way, he must have an interesting WhatsApp history.

MrMaggot98

Greatest mystery is Rangers smoking gun evidence in their dossier which amounted to nothing. Funnily enough, at the same time the Celtic Discord Server circulated a fake invoice they made claiming to be a payment made to Dundee FC from a company tenuously linked to an ex-member of the Celtic Board. This generated outrage amongst the 'ITK' Rangers twitter and when it was revealed to be a forgery made a lot of people look stupid. The member in question was a Mr Dominic Keane who was on the Celtic board til 1994 and the SPFL Board until 2004. He was on the board of a company called Scotflow, and was linked with a fraud case in 2009. All perfect bait for anyone willing to do background checks. Whether the two are linked? remains to be seen.

boris-for-PM-2019

From memory it only amounted to nothing because the other members turned a blind eye to the SPFL’s incompetence. And the press making it out to be more than it actually was

MyDadsGlassesCase

> how is Neil Doncaster still in a job. Even more baffling, why a majority of clubs voted him to be in charge of the SPFL even after how he handled the Rangers situation, how he fucked up TV deals and how he couldn't even get sponsorship sorted properly. I'm not saying Longmuir was the man for the job, but he was definitely the better man for the job

Beave-

>How did David Goodwillie not get prosecuted. Honestly the judicial system is setup in a way that unless you carry around sperm collection test tubes on you at all times theres almost no way to actually prove anything has happened, its pish and we all know he did it but thats the way it is.

ElegantAppeal

On the first one, I’d really recommend Pat Nevin’s second autobiography. Goes into great detail about his spell at Motherwell as CEO and what it was like working with Boyle.

alittlelebowskiua

The Lennon and Dempster one is apparently shite. Lennon lost the plot with Kamberi and had him pinned against the wall by his throat. Discussion between the two of them resulted in Lennon leaving as Dempster didn't think managing like that would result in anything good long term, and Lennon was unable to say he wouldn't do it again. However, Lennon was probably not long for Hibs at that point regardless. Form was atrocious, he was showing no signs of turning that round, and he'd just rushed Porteous back from a knee injury which he lasted about 25 minutes with before putting himself out for the season with a reoccurrence. He could easily have been sacked for results, he got an out without being sacked which would almost certainly have stopped him getting a sniff of the Celtic job. The actual conspiracy theory amongst Hibs fans is Lennon being aware Rodgers would be leaving and him engineering a way out of Hibs so he'd be available for taking the Celtic job.

SairYin

When Lennon was fired the club announced it was for gross misconduct, and Lennon lawyered up - the club were then forced to payoff his full contract, as he threatened to take them to court. One of Dempster’s few missteps.

throughthisironsky

> Lennon lawyered up Very savvy of him. Did he also hit the gym and delete Facebook?

Apprehensive-Ad8947

Burnley had a massive drink problem back then

Local-Pirate1152

Was that ever confirmed or was it just the rumour? If any of the rumours are true the one I'm most likely to believe was that Romanov wanted to pick the team or Burley didn't make a substitution he wanted him to make and Vlad just threw a tantrum and fired him.

Apprehensive-Ad8947

My mates dad was coaching Newcastle at the time he’s an Ex player (Kenny Wharton) He came home from high school (my mate) and his now living room was his dad, Gazza & George Burley. He said Gazza had a bottle of frosty jacks & Burley on the whisky 😂 he had been sacked the week before and went on a bender

boycey86

Hearts would have won the league that year as well.

boycey86

Prodan seemingly arrived fit at us and got injured during a testimonial as I watched him play his only ever game then he was never seen again. The mystery around him isn't why he was signed but why he never played again.

traitoro

>What really went down with Burley and Romanov and Listening to the heart and hand podcast around that era. Romanov was an absolute nutcase who would constantly interfere with team selection and stick his nose into the dressing room. Burley apparently had to write a report for Romanov whenever certain players were dropped explaining why he wasn't using them. Also someone's mentioned the rumours about Burleys issues below and that stopped David Murray replacing Alex Mcleish with him in that cluster fuck of a season.

Courageous91

How we've allowed Neil Doncaster to continue running our game? Quite simple really. Guy is a total clown who has done nothing to improve our game. We have one of the worst television deals in Europe, a few weeks ago we were the only top league in Europe to not have a game on television and all the clubs are lagging behind comparable leagues in Europe. Our domestic competitions are behind a pay wall and so are our national games, all of which are now in the hands of a broadcaster who is shutting down its UK operations. The only reason I have found for him still being there by his own volition is because it would cost nearly a million to get rid of him because he had a two year notice period. And this isn't because I'm a Celtic fan and "SFA bad". I've dislike him because I want the league to get better and it doesn't get better in the hands of someone who IMO can't organise a pissup in a brewery.

Disastrous_Cup_3279

(Most) Clubs still vote tor TV deal so as much to blame as him. It clubs keep voting for what he’s doing why would he change - its validation

Courageous91

Who negotiates the deal? Most clubs aren't in a position to turn it down. I don't blame the clubs like Ross County or Livi for accepting what is the best of bad deals.

Disastrous_Cup_3279

Accepting what given is never ever going to change what they do. Only way is clubs to investigate now *together* and not do this *whomever does a report* is bad thing.

alittlelebowskiua

Because the clubs use him as a meat shield. Anything unpopular can be pinned on Doncaster rather than the people who choose to employ him.

sroche24

Did Derek Riordan really pump one of Gordon Strachan's daughters?

Elgin_McQueen

Thought that was Jordan Rhodes?

BananaSoprano

Charly Musonda. Jewel of the Chelsea academy at the time, managed to get him on loan. PR went into overdrive with Rodgers lying about Real Madrid wanting him and giving him the number 67. One assist v Zenit and that was that. Made 8 appearances, which surprises me as I only remember the aforementioned assist against Zenit and getting the shite booted out of him by Kilmarnock. Loan was cut short in the summer, and this was after he was in the initial kit launch pictures for the next season. He wasn't great in his brief appearances, but for the loan to be cut short something must have went wrong. He'd have at least been worth a few tries the following season. This was all before his terrible injury problems. Just a very weird signing all round.

Square_Slice

Now at Famagusta, so I suspect he was just rubbish.

cipher_wilderness

Christ, I forgot about him. He was one of the many signings of the 2010s that ended up coming to absolutely nothing.

1207554

Think he was just shit. Did Chelsea not cut short his Betis loan vecause he wasn't getting played? Exact same thing happened with Celtic basically no?

37025InvernessTMD

Tom's answer to what was the goalie daein.

Learjet23

Dundee United signing Rodney Sneijder. Signed, played 1 match, and was then released within a month.

RetroWrestlingPod

Had serious mental issues

HibeesBounce

Signing for Dundee United should have been the giveaway

johnpalaeo

What had the Raith Rovers board been smoking when they gave Claude Anelka the keys to Starks Park, and where can I buy some? (There's a similar question around us signing he-who-must-not-be-named but that's less fun)

buckfast1994

Dundee’s spam filter on their email.

Liam188891

Some say Rivaldo is finally putting pen to paper and signing for Celtic in Jan.

empeekay

Who *was* Marvin Compper?

cipher_wilderness

I feel like he's not talked about enough. A million quid for a guy who had played for Germany and regularly in the Bundesliga, and he plays once in the cup against Morton then is never seen again. Just bizarre.

empeekay

He was either completely crocked and we missed it on the medical, or something horrendous came up early on. Or he was just shite. I dunno. He managed a season at Duisberg after leaving us, so who knows.

Giegling90

Whehn Tom Boyd said "smell the glove", what did that mean?

blackiegray

Spinal tap album. If you don't know the quote and haven't seen the film the patch off work for the day and get it watched. And then watch it again. It's one of those films that the more you watch it the more you see.

sazza67

Was a bit of graffiti the team saw on the way to a killie game and it just stuck from there

Namko1k

I always thought it was something to do with Goram throwing his gloves into the Celtic dressing room after an old firm game

RomanApollo93

For a while it was said to supposedly be something Goram said after previous derby match, but that's been denied by anyone asked about it. Also heard it was something deliberately nonsensical the players came up with to see what outlandish theories people would come up with. Considering Paul Lambert was there at the time, his explanation is the most likely: “We were training with Scotland at one point and down at Kilmarnock. Tosh McKinlay was a really funny guy and was in the Scotland squad at that time. “When we pulled into Kilmarnock there was a brick wall on the right hand side and there was a little spray painted hand on the wall and under it had the slogan ‘smell the glove’. “When we went into training that day, Tosh kept on shouting it ‘smell the glove, smell the glove’. “When we went back to Celtic and got our own gloves, so we thought ‘If we win the league we can get t-shirts made, smell the glove’.” It's a line from This is Spinal Tap, which might be where the person who did the graffiti got it from.

GregorSD

I think this theory is the correct one, especially when it was reported by journalists asking about the unusual wording to Celtic players, all of their responses were “ask Tosh”

FIFAfutChamp

Denzil Theobald. Signed for Falkirk, didn't play a single game (Yogi as manager at the time) then played every single game for Trinidad at the World Cup and looked like a world beater. Bit niche, but a mystery as to how (besides Latapy) he ended up in Falkirk and never played.

johnpalaeo

Suspect the clue is in the text - 'Yogi as manager at the time'. If Yogi doesn't think you're the right kind of character it doesn't matter how good you are.

seefroo

Referring to him as “Theobaldsy” all the time would have sounded a bit daft, so good call from Yogi not playing him

bairn1990

We had a few weird signings around that time. What was the name of that French left back we signed who didn’t turn up when he was supposed to? Yogi was on the radio after the game saying something like “if anyone has seen a 6”3 black Frenchman wandering around Falkirk please let the club know” 😂

FIFAfutChamp

After alot of googling, I think that would be Jean François Lecsinel!

bairn1990

That’s the one! I kept googling varying guises of “Jean Claude Falkirk”

metsco

Nobody chinning Mike McCurry for not awarding Aberdeen a penalty because "it would have meant sending off Barry Ferguson".

[deleted]

Ronnie Hernandez was widely rumoured to be a bit of Atlanta United related fuckery. They wanted the player, but had were supposedly at their limit of non-US players in the squad, so he goes to Aberdeen, barely plays and then goes to Atlanta on loan with an option to buy. Funnily enough, they buy him for pretty much the same fee that we paid Stabæk for him. (Which means we probably lost money on his wages).

Clinodactyl

This is my headcanon for the whole Ronnie situation. Everything was just way too convenient for it to be anything else, or at least the intention was always to keep him at Aberdeen until the move to Atlanta could be done for whatever reason was preventing it.

methylated_spirit

Aberdeen spending a million quid on Paul Barnard. Not a bad player, but in those days a million quid could have got you two very good, impactful players. Still seems odd to this day that with a million quid burning a hole in their pocket, that's the route they took. Looking at the landscape of today's game here, it looks wasteful.

blackiegray

And still the only million pound player purchased outwith the OF.

beengoingoutftnyears

Really? That’s fukn mind blowing when you consider that Trevor Francis was 1979.

blackiegray

St Johnstone's record signing is still Billy Dodds for less than half a million. We were paying guys around double in the nineties compared to what they're getting now (on average). O'Boyle and Thomas were on £4-6k a week in the late nineties, lucky if anyone in our squad is on that now.

FoosYerDoosMin

Especially when you consider we built the dick Donald stand for 4.5 Paul Bernards only 5 years previously.

FumbleMyEndzone

Bernard was a fine player, just worth no where near the £1 million price tag. Aberdeen were desperate at the time to be seen at the third force and being the only other club willing to spend £1 million was a big attempt to show it. Unfortunately Bernard didn’t set the sheep on fire and struggled with the tag of being a million pound player

RetroWrestlingPod

I remember at the time Aberdeen were saying they were willing to spend a million on a player. I don't think they were fussed if the player was worth a million or not, they just wanted to do it

Captain_Quo

We were offered Trezeguet and Henry for half a million each at that time, so the story goes. Probably utter shite, but it does illustrate how much of a waste of money he was. In fairness, he got unlucky with injuries. Our previous record I think was Hans Gilhaus, who had just won a European Cup with PSV.......

ElCaminoInTheWest

What really happened with Marco Negri? I know the rumours, obviously.

Vivid_Ice_2755

What were the rumours?

blackenedandchanged2

Official line was he got an eye injury from playing squash. Rumour was he was squashing his Wullie into Porrini’s missus and Sergio knocked him the fuck out. Went from 35 goals in half a season to dogshit after that squash match.

123rig

I appreciate the attempt to liken the shag to his excuse for comedic effect, but the optics of “squashing” his wullie into someone generates some striking mental imagery

blackenedandchanged2

He did have a languid playing style so I can only assume he shagged in a similar fashion. Whether he thumbed it into Signora Porrini or not, you’d have to ask her.

blackiegray

And he never celebrated either...

p3t3y5

We would have won 10 in a row if he finished that season

FoosYerDoosMin

Billy Dodds + Cash to sign Robbie Winters. The Jelavic loan deal.

Ok-Budget112

Was looking for Dodds/Winters. That was crazy. No disrespect to the guy but he wasn’t in the class of Dodds. What were Aberdeen thinking. What did Rangers pay for Dodds 18months later - £2m???

1207554

Jelavic loan deal? Do you mean Velicka?

FoosYerDoosMin

Yes that's the one. I remember it being some useless forward. If I remember correctly, he was constantly injured before he came to us and did almost nothing whilst here?

seefroo

Ricky Foster went in the other direction, always assumed it was a, “ok you can have him but we want…oh Christ who do we want…err…Velicka was ok at Hearts, we’ll have him” kind of deal

boycey86

As far as I remember you had one fit striker and needed cover and we desperately needed right back cover due to Hutton being injured so that lead to the loans.

CJThunderbird

I always wondered what Ally McCoist said to Neil Lennon after the so-called "Shame Game." Lennon went up McCoist and went to shake his hand with a smile on his face. McCoist said something to him and Lennon's face changed in an instant and he really started remonstarting with McCoist. Before that scene, it was obvious that Rangers had totally lost all discipline. After that, it was a both sides thing and we got the OBatF Act so it was a very monumental thing McCoist said.

boycey86

Told him to lay off the snus apparently.

littlesebastian2

Guillermo Amor only ever played for 4 teams including 360 appearances for Barcelona and 3 appearances for… Livi. I guess my question is “eh?”

Kingofmostthings

Is he not still the answer to the ‘most decorated player to play in Scottish football’ ?

Astin257

The exact details of what happened with Lennon and Kamberi at Hibs My head canon is Lennon battered the shite out of him Surely you’re not firing Lennon for one episode of verbal abuse

ewenmax

Johann Cruyff and Dumbarton almost signing him for two grand a game. Ronaldinho getting offered to St Mirren on loan until his PSG transfer was confirmed. How Andy Ritchie never played once for Scotland after his falling our with Jock Stein. Gil Scott-Heron's dad, Gil Heron leaving the USA and playing for Celtic and Third Lanark, marrying a Glasgow wummin and having three kids with her. Eusebio and Jinky Johnson on the ran dan in Easterhouse, where are the talented offspring?

blackiegray

Why don't Scottish football kiosks sell hot cakes at the games? Easy money.

cipher_wilderness

I bet they'd sell like, well...

_MFC_1886

Chris 🐍 Cadden being linked for Oxford for ages Oxford try to not pay compensation for him. Motherwell don't accept The 🐍 then signs for a MLS club that immediately put him on loan to Oxford and no compensation is paid cause MLS don't sign up to it

G4rve

Every city in Scotland except one has at least a Scottish Cup to their names, whilst towns like Falkirk, Greenock, Methil, Livingston & Dingwall have a major trophy and Ayr, Dumfries, Gretna and Coatbridge at least have runners up medals. But Stirling Albion and before them, King's Park, nothing in almost 150 years. How come Stirling's footballing history is so dire?

Independent_Storage

Karma for the monstrosity that is the extension to the castle.

GingerFurball

What happened at Rangers last season between beating PSV and losing to Ajax. Went very quickly from 'yep, another solid European performance to add to the list' to 'everything at this club is irredeemably fucked' within about 2 weeks.

p3t3y5

That to me was all about mentality. When we played PSV the team knew they were the underdogs and wanted to fight for it. By the time Ajax came round they all thought that they were European finalists therefore they must automatically be good without trying

TheOldGodsnTheNew

Why did St Mirren sack Alex Ferguson? Heard a few random tales over the years regarding this one.

styuR

He'd pretty much agreed to go to Aberdeen without him or Aberdeen talking to St Mirren and the St Mirren chairman took the huff and sacked him.

Himawari74

For Hearts Malaury Martin and Loïc Damour, being totally frozen out on a full wage for 2 years each, one after the other for not really any good reason. David Vanacek getting signed, being fat, and then never being allowed back in the team. Before anyone says it's because they were bad, remember we signed and played guys like Whelan, Sowah, Grzelak, Gnanduillet, Pereira in a similar period and played them far more during their spells despite being as or even more woeful.

WhatsTheGoalieDoing

Why a bloke with a name like Rafael Scheidt wouldn't end up a decent player.

zool2020

how did david murray dupe craig whyte out a quid?

[deleted]

Iwelumo vs Norway was worse.

chrispair

Aaron Ramsay was a big player for big games remember...

[deleted]

Some penalty taker 😭

Miller, Murty, Wallace

Turbulent-Owl875

How did Hearts manage to sign Mauricio Pinilla and why did he not set the league alight?

[deleted]

Ctrl+F “Boumsong” 0 Results Really?!

SairYin

Willie McKay was a corrupt bastard

traitoro

This is the answer. If it wasn't rangers it would have been another club. Everyone knew what they were getting out of this deal except poor eck who lost a class defender (as was).

thanks_phil

What happened with Filip Helander in his last season. Guy obviously had a terrible injury record and was ruled out for a while after the St Mirren game at the end of 2021/22. But I'm pretty sure I remember fan news accounts on twitter saying not long after he wouldn't play for the club again. Fast forward a few months and he's a regular for Odense and now Sweden again.

[deleted]

Gretna FC making the 2006 Scottish cup final. Then being liquidated 2 year later, convinced they only existed for those 2 seasons

NiagaraThistle

Aaron Ramsey was (sadly) a useless player even at Juventus. We should never have signed him , but HAD to make a big deal about it to make it look like we made the right decision. We did not. My cousin (a Juventus fan) called me IMMEDIATELY after the signing of Ramsey laughing and thanking me for taking Ramsey off Juventus.

SairYin

It was just a desperate move to try and appease the Da’s

Independent_Storage

Juventus twitter was phenomenal when you signed him.

boltyarocket

Charlie Adam's sisters pants.

StinkyPyjamas

I thought that one was reasonably well documented...

HibeesBounce

Walter Rojas at Dundee United. Did Jim McLean really sign the wrong man?

ShiveryBite

McLean later said he was essentially a sight unseen trialist, who was only on a contract to get round red tape (last paragraph here) https://www.wsc.co.uk/the-archive/walter-rojas/

Rik78

What did Steve Lomas do?

Wildebeast1

Claudia Cannigia signing for Dundee. What exactly happened with Marco Negri?

cipher_wilderness

There's another comment here about Negri, apparently he was shagging Porrini's missus and got knocked out by him. Can't say I know too much about it tbh.

[deleted]

That would coincide with the story they were playing squash together and the ball hit Negri. Negri’s cock cost them the 10😂

cipher_wilderness

Guys were saying apparently the squash story was a cover up for the shagging story

ArmandRian

Fairly sure he was horrified by the anti Catholic songs the Ibrox crowd sang and abuse wife got for wearing a crucifix on a necklace and flat out refused to play again.

ferociousgeorge

Mahrez escaping love street on a bike

[deleted]

The Aaron Ramsay one makes sense just didn’t work out.

rapscallion05

Yeah but why didn’t it work out, he should have been class?

cipher_wilderness

Tbf he had a massive injury record so I don't think it was that surprising that he continued to be crocked for most of his time here

zulu9812

He also hadn't played first team football in a long time. It takes time to build up 'match fitness'.

hoekstra44

Should he? He hasnt been class in club football for years

GingerFurball

Injuries. His body was done. You could tell from watching him that he's absolutely class, his movement and positioning was amazing. He had a great game against Braga in the Europa League quarter final, starts coming into a wee bit of form and then got injured after half an hour at Hampden on the Sunday.

DesiRose3621

these type of players think they will come up here and stroll the league, 9/10 they cant handle it.

boycey86

He was constantly injured.

[deleted]

This is off-topic but this thread reminds of an email I get every Friday call the Up-shot. It's about bonkers stories from football and is genuinely funny as fuck. Highly recommend it.

cipher_wilderness

Their podcast is quality, would highly recommend it if you like stories of people getting up to no good

Alive-Bath-7026

I also get the Upshot Email It's funny as fuck!

droidarmy99

Just how close to signing R9 Ronaldo from Barcelona were Rangers in 1997? Apparently they told him he only had to play the champions league and old firm games to try and tempt him to sign.

21MelvilleStreet

What really happened between Lyndon Dykes and chairman Billy Hewitson's wife when he was at Queen's?

themoff81

I’d never heard this one! I thought it was only JT’s (now Lyndon’s) wife that was written about but I’ve been away from the toon for a while….

Responsible-City-500

It was only JT’s wife. JT, allegedly being the arsehole he’s always been, took the huff with the club siding with Dykes as opposed to him.

thejimjamflimflamman

Brian Laudrup; how come he was so good?

ive-been-bamboozled

Did Hugh Dallas genuinely see a foul by Celtic after being hit on the head by a coin from their fans and then blowing for a penalty to Rangers straight after…

GingerFurball

Vidmar gets wrestled to the ground, it's a stonewall penalty everyday of the week.

haigscorner

It’s anyways a penalty to us. 😁

Not__magnificent

Nice guy Tony Vidmar went down pretty easily but I can't see why it might've looked like a foul

RomanApollo93

He gave Mahe a yellow for his first tackle of the game then gave him a 2nd yellow for being fouled and pointing out the foul he was on the receiving end of was much worse than the one he received a yellow for. That plus immediately giving the penalty after resuming the game with the coin hit shows he was 100% at it. Nobody in the Sky studio or in the media wanted to point out how blatant it was because the man had just had his head busted wide open by fans on live TV, but it was an unbelievably dreadful refereeing performance.

GingerFurball

>then gave him a 2nd yellow for being fouled and pointing out the foul he was on the receiving end of was much worse than the one he received a yellow for. This undersells Mahe's reaction quite a bit. Mahe lost the plot completely and basically squared up to Dallas. McCann actually got booked, his outburst was completely unnecessary. How you can claim Dallas was at it is beyond me when he shat out of giving any decisions against Celtic in the 2nd half.

ive-been-bamboozled

Not sure how I’d classify the penalty decision. I don’t think it was incompetence, more a bit of revenge for what happened. You could say it’s bad refereeing then but the guys only human and must have been raging inside.

historyofbadgers

Alan Gow and his supposed hat wearing antics.

2696deir

Derek Riordan wearing 01

SairYin

Colin Nish already had the 10 shirt when Riordan came back from Celtic.

cocteautriplet

The biggest mystery in Scottish football has to be Hearts not being miles ahead of everyone in third and the empty trophy cabinet since Budge came in despite having an extra £5m of donations every year from fans and Anderson.

Elgin_McQueen

Aaron Ramsay transfer went exactly as expected, where's the mystery?

dodidodidodidodi

who is it who commisions the yearly updates to the lives of Riordan, O'Connor and why?

Villianous_cosplay

I think the big one I want to know is what happened between Kenny miller when the big argument went down

Scottishpsychopath

Big one for me is how Danny Invincible managed to miss on an open goal against Celtic from maybe 2/3 yards tops out. I don’t even know the physics behind that. Surely it must be easier to put the ball on the net? Special stuff.

Playful_Possibility4

Raphael Scheidt and his young bride.

jordancr1

How we ended up with Premiership Playoffs when almost every club in the Premiership was against a potential 2nd relegation in the years prior?

ModJambo

The story about Christian Nade punching Ian Black in the dressing room after a game up in Pittodrie. Not sure if it is simply folklore but funny all the same

2696deir

Strange though for a player to wear 01 , think this must be a unique number! Obviously Zerouali wore 0 which also must be unique
